First, let me just say that I found myself falling for her while watching those duets from the pit. Without knowing why Jim chose her to accompany him, (and blah blah blah, I'm not interested in any conceited objections), I thought she was great. Did anyone else find themselves similarly enraptured? Maybe they should date! Or maybe we just need to hear some more of a female voice alongside the greatest voice ever! Right?! "Let's take a walk..."
Maybe they should not. But that's just me. I'm jealous of every attractive female he sings with.
I honestly can't think of any modern female singer that can measure up to Jim's artistry and vocal performance. Everytime I see him perform with someone, I can't help but think how much he outshines them. Jim's voice easily ranks as monumental as Otis, Sam, Marvin and Curtis. If only the rest of world had the pleasure of knowing that.
The rest of the world is more concerned with a girl who sings songs titled "ur so gay" and "i kissed a girl". so there's that.
i was very impressed. as i said in another post, i wrote her off when she appeared in an amex commercial a year or so ago. plus being from jersey, I just assumed she'd be in a crappy blues-rock band that did too many bon jovi covers because the boss is for oldsters.
i was wrong.

i love Jim, he has a great voice but I think even he would admit he is not in the same realm as Otis, Sam and Marvin.
as for the topic at hand, I thought Nicole Atkins was amazing, i thought her voice sounded great and was the perfect compliment to Jim. I hope for more collaborations in the future.
While I don't think JJ would say he's as good, he would cite them as influences (obviously)

QuoteI still love that he put Gram Parsons on his list!
The only more unique list was Courtney Love because she was the only name on it.
His really did stand out. The rest seemed to try to be very humble or were unashamed of how un-humble they were.
I think she sounds amazing on the recording and compliments Jim's voice nicely.

I caught her set at Lolla and wasn't impressed. I don't think she's bad, just didn't think she was anything special.

This made me more happy than any other name on the list. If anyone has not seen the return to Sin City DVD that Jim took part in go out and get it now. Its great, my favorite part is at the end when he's dancing with Gram's daughter.

I agree on both parts. Very few are in the Otis, Sam, Marvin class but I love that Jim is influenced by them and it comes out in the music.
I really like what Nicole did at the show, she was having a blast.
i also like how they choose to bring out acts who are on the verge. for a NYE show at the garden, they really could have gotten anyone or had someone forced upon them (like they'd agree to do that). Instead, they bring up local favorites and people they respect instead.

I thought she was great ... Her voice conveys power and emotion, and yet has a delicate quality. I don't view her as a lackluster pick at all.
And Penny, we know you're lobbying VH1 for a new show "Rock of Love -- Jim James Edition"
As such you can't be considered objective here! ;D

Sharon Jones would've been off the hook. I saw her at Mountain Jam, she was like the female James Brown.
Saw Sharon Jones at Outsidelands, she's the real deal.
Yeah, I was lucky enough to catch her a few times this year...and she's playing JazzFest!
As a bit of background, I am VERY critical of anyone who attempts a Dolly Parton cover, as Dolly's one of my favorite artists of all time.
But I just think that Nicole Atkins is vanilla as all hell. And yes, I've heard her records, seen her live, etc. She leaves me cold.
I'd put her in the same category as Grace Potter: hot woman who is passably talented, but who dudes keep telling me is the most. amazing. musician. evahhh. I believe the dudes are just confused by the hotness. ;)
I think Jim needs a stronger, more soulful voice as a counterpart. Maybe Bettye LaVette? Candi Staton? I agree, Penny - Aretha would have been amazing! We can dream...

Look at the way they're looking at each other.
She was absolutely amazing, her voice was like buttah (and she's hot).

If I am going to dream about that ultimate duet, hell...MAKE IT DOLLY! Man, who would have the prettier hair, the longer legs, the handsomer face, the most wonderful voice...Jim or Dolly? They could follow up with, "I'm a little bit country, he's a little ROCK N ROLL" :D
and i obviously cheated on bo cause that guy at the top holding the ovation guitar resembles conan o'brien. but i'm glad to see they all got my lustrous, red hair. except for you, the accordion player.
maybe we'll make you clean the fireplace and then some dude will try to steal your father's horse, and then you throw an apple at him and it turns out that he's the prince and then you dress up as a wealthy person and meet him and then you guys fall in love. and you have to have a shitty british accent.
I would take Dolly in a flipping heartbeat. Could you imagine that combination of Dolly/Jim. It'd be quite Jolly.

The next show we should all dress as Dolly to voice our pick for a duet partner. Maybe Jim will crack a smile if he looks into the pit and sees a bunch of Dolly's smiling back at him.
in all seriousness, DOLLY loves duets, she has done a boat-load of 'em. Last time I saw her she played guitar, piano, banjo, mandolin, drums, and bass, quite impressve, and yes what nice set of jugs (hee hee) ;D

Actually I have to say I think the opposite happens with Grace. People see her hotness and mistake it for not being talented when actually she is MEGA talented. I'd go see her sing, play guitar and keys if she looked like my Grandma. She can hang with the boys bigtime.
that girls pretty fine, female vocals always add a little special type of sensitivity to the vibe. I dig it, but I love to rock also.

this is the blurb currently found in her Wikipedia article:
On New Years Eve 2008 Nicole Atkins joined My Morning Jacket as their special guest at Madison Square Garden. She performed two duets with lead singer Jim James - "You're All I Need" by Marvin Gaye, and "Islands In the Stream" by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton. She was spectacular.
