I am starting by listing the Vancouver setlist. From there, I will try to keep a running tab of what songs are played as the tour progresses. (I am not going to try to keep track of play order - that will get too complicated.) Note: this info is as accurate as I can make it, but it is also pieced together from lots of different sources and may not be exact.
Also, please add show reviews and show pics and tour posters as available. Comments and corrections welcomed!

Awesome thanks man! Are you saying there were even more songs than you show on that list!?!?!?! :o
QuoteAwesome thanks man! Are you saying there were even more songs than you show on that list!?!?!?! :o
That's what the review said - that this was a partial list "from a photo taken of the setlist on the soundboard." The review also says 30+ songs, but only 24 songs are listed...
I guess time will tell.
...i'm sure they had to have played 'the right place'
Quote...i'm sure they had to have played 'the right place'
Yes, along with "The Right Place" there are a couple of others from the new album "missing" too:
Whole Lotta Losin'
Man Named Truth
Somebody that actually attended the whole show will have to fill us in as to how accurate all this is.
It will be interesting to see whether this changes very much as the tour progresses.
I have to wait until the show in Chicago on the 30th.
At the risk of erecting some nipples on here, I came across this fan review on the Wilco board. SPOILER ALERT!!!
"Okay, real fast, cause I really need to get to bed, but the quick lowdown on the show: they played every song off the album (I'm pretty sure of this, at least...haven't looked at the tracklisting, but off the top of my head I can't really think of a song they didn't play), plus 5-7 from each of their band's catalogues. It was these reworkings, some solo and some full-band, that generated most of the highlights. Never been a huge fan of Oberst and don't really know much of his material beyond Cassadaga, and off that they played Soul Singer and Limetree, plus a few other songs that I recognized but don't know the names of. This was my second time seeing Matt (the last time was at a festival) but he showed off his guitar chops and musicianship much more this time around, and I was actually quite impressed. His first solo song was a Hundred Million Years (could be off on the title, but it's off Hold Time) and it was fantastic. Again, drawing a bit of a blank on what else he played...
I'm a huge My Morning Jacket fan, and so the major draw here was definitely Jim, and he didn't let down whatsoever. Stole the show, as far as I'm concerned, and that's even with him being stuck behind the bass for a lot of the MoF songs. Him and Will Johnson played an unfuckingreal rendition of Bermuda Highway...that alone was worth the price of admission right there. He also played I Will Be There When You Die (with Conor, who was quite the weak link on this song, unfortunately), Golden, Smokin from Shootin (full band, and they slaughtered this song), and opened the encore with a stunning version of At Dawn.
Mike Mogis is quite the secret weapon.
All the guys hopped around and shared the instrumental duties a fair bit (Johnson was on the kit for the entire show except Bermuda Highway). Again, I know I'm forgetting a fair bit, but that's the best I can do for now."

WOW :D :D ........ :D
HOLY SHIT, all I gotta say is go. Amazing show simply amazing. Closer to 3 hours. They all came out in suits and switched off instruments. Keys, Bass, Guitar, Drums (some guy named Will Johnson). Mike Moogis killed the slide and really added to the tracks.
Every song from the album sounded way better (except Sandman Brakeman, it seemed really slow at first and then sped up). The crowd seemed only into the Bright Eyes song which was interesting when I was loosing my shit for MMJ. I got a set list from the light guy.
1. Whole Lotta Losin
2. Right Place
3. Soul Singer
4. Man Names Truth

I think it was I Will Be There When You Die, mentioned in marino13's post.
Why am I not going to one of these shows??? :'(
L'ville is going to be f*cking sick
This reminds me of sitting around with your friends the day after everyone got hammered, piecing together what each person remembers from the evening so you can get a full idea of what happened. ;D
damn...i might need to suck it up and go to Philly :o
I kept thinking they would open with an MOF song, and what would be a good opener, and kept coming back to Whole Lotta Losing because it just seemed like a great song to set the tone for the show. Cool to see they opened with it.
What A Wonderful Man?! No way? WAY :D
Maybe it's Wonderful (the way I feel) instead of WAWM?
QuoteMaybe it's Wonderful (the way I feel) instead of WAWM?
It says on the full setlist that Look at You wasn't played so my guess is that Jim just decided to play What a Wonderful Man instead. Hopefully on the omnichord, which I really hope he busts out in Louisville.
QuoteMaybe it's Wonderful (the way I feel) instead of WAWM?
That could be! It just said Wonderful and I assumed WAWM...
In fact, Wonderful (the Way I Feel) makes sense given James/Ward performance of that song at My Morning Jacket Live SXSW Austin 2008.
that set looks great....but selfishly I hope at some point Will Johnson sings a song or two of his...the guy is insanely talented with Centromatic and his solo stuff. I know he sang a few on the Patterson Hood tour and Patterson and Jason Isbell cover a few of his songs.
Setlist looks great...anyone know of any video that has surfaced yet?

Nice review, pics, plus confirms that "Wonderful" = The Way I Feel
Absolutely ridiculous setlist. It was fun to read the thread because as it got pieced together it just got more and more amazing. By the time I got to I Will Be There When You Die I had to close my laptop and walk away for a minute; Im pretty sure my head almost exploded. Philly seems so far away, but I gotta think they'll pull a rabbit out of their collective hat for the last US show on the tour...

Awesome shit...I liked "Ward put on a one-man honky-tonk clinic"
Chills.
Wow, awesome setlist... just got chills reading this thread. At Dawn encore... omg what a treat. Can't wait for the European leg :)
Well, I'm pumped. I just hope that if anything changes, Ward includes Epistemology because I think that would sound awesome with all the people involved.
I think Matt's song "Headed for A Fall" (from the To Go Home EP) would go over well too, but i am also a big fan of "Epistemology" and agree with you there.

Ooooh, what a great song. Jim even sings backup on that one, and Mogis could play the Nels Cline guitar part. If only they could get Neko to join them...
I've never seen Matt in concert, so I'm really looking forward to his stuff.

Agreed. I'm hoping they pull out Headed for a Fall. But it should be noted that m ward covered that song, it's by Jimmie Dale Gilmore.
I'd also like to hear/see Chinese Translation which Jim sings backup on.
thanks for the clarification on Headed for A Fall...I didnt know it was a cover...fingers crossed for Louisville...
Holy Crap! That's amazing! This hurts. Real bad. That is some sweet ass candy.
OK, so here is my summary but I need some help in a few spots. Track 9 just says "M. Ward song" any help on what that was? Also was "Lullaby" M.Wards Lullaby and Exile? Finally, can we confirm that Look at you was just skipped and not replaced with WAWM?

All 15 MOF songs, 5 Conor songs, 7 M.Ward songs and 6 MMJ songs. YOWSER!!!!
Hi there,
Just joined here for the first time. That quoted post on the first page from the Wilco board was my quick review last nite...it was indeed a great show, and I know it's been confirmed by now but it was indeed Wonderful (The Way I Feel), Look at You was definitely skipped, and the song with Jim and Conor was I Will Be There When You Die (absolutely incredible, and gorgeous, and sad).
At Dawn to kick off the encore was perfect. Lights were stunning. Smoking From Shooting was probably the best rock song of the evening, and hearing Bermuda Highway was a dream come true.
This is my follow-up on the Wilco board this morning, glad to have been of service:
Yeah, that's definitely not a complete setlist. For starters, it doesn't include Conor's semi-solo run of songs near the start. I'd say there were probably anywhere from 6-8 songs before M. Ward took over with 100 Million. And yeah, saying that the room was "empty" is a major exaggeration...tickets said 7, we showed up at 7.30, the bouncers said the show would start at 8, and the band took the stage at 8.30. Granted, the crowd was thin enough that I was able to edge my way up to almost the very front, but there was a good crowd of people from the very get-go and everyone was very into it (one guy kept screaming out MIKE MOGIIIIIIIIIIIS, which got increasingly funnier as Mogis became increasingly awkward and by the end of the show seemed completely unsure of how to respond).
Show started with a few songs by the full band, and then everyone left the stage and it was just Conor for a song. Then Mogis joined him for a couple tracks, and then he left and Matt joined Conor on stage for a song. Then Conor left, Matt did a few songs by himself, then full band by himself, and then Jim had his mini-set. Kinda cool how they backed each other like this and traded off instruments quite smoothly and easily (they all played guitar, bass and keys at some point during the show, with the exception of Mogis, who spent a lot of the time on slide).
Could be speaking from a fairly substantial bias here, but Conor continues to be the major weak link in my eyes. He's the least skilled from a musicianship standpoint, and a lot of his attempts at showmanship either came off forced or wound up backfiring on him (during "Smoking from Shooting," he sang the 'Who makes my decisions' verse and held a hand over his right eye the entire time, looked like an idiot, then proceeded to nearly knock his mic from its stand, then spent the next 15-20 seconds trying to get it back into place just as all hell started breaking loose around him). Granted, he did come into his own a bit towards the end, and it would probably help if I knew his material more, but still...most of the time I just wanted to punch him in the face. (The fact that there were dozens of cute and charming girls practically drooling over him didn't endear him to me any further.)
All said, a very entertaining show, and given the ticket price, pretty good value too. I'll be interested to see what turns up on future setlists, but I was extremely satisfied by the MMJ tracks that were played, or, as Matt put it at one point, "severely pleased." Hopefully they don't play all 15 album tracks every time though...standouts from the album were "Losing Your Head" and "His Majesty's Voice" and then a few tracks that I don't really care for on the album at all: "Goodway" and "Map of the World" were both pretty great.
OK so Track 9 is the only remaining mystery. Thanks for the additional review Trevor. We love those around here.

I have no idea. There was a place on the setlist but that doesn't mean he played something, just like Jim didn't play Look At You.
Anyone have the Portland setlist and/or show reviews?
In the first post of this thread, I will try to keep a running tab of what songs are played (and how often) as the tour progresses. (I am not going to try to keep track of play order - that will get too complicated.)
Also, please add show reviews as available. Comments and corrections welcomed!

Headed for a Fall is an amazing song....especially Nels Cline on guitar.
oh my god I'm so friggin' excited! I'm debating whether or not to get into the Philly show- anyone have an extra ticket?
Come on Portland it's almost 7 am! Shake off that hangover and tell me all about your show! ;)
Wasn't keeping track of the set list, but looking at the Vancouver set list, it was very much the same with more Bright Eyes songs.
Jim James has buzzed his hair again. Didn't dig the look, but loved the voice all the same.

I'll be at the Oakland Fox on Saturday and will do my best to get a setlist.
Sorry, no setlist from Portland. I didn't keep track but it seemed the same as BC. The ushers at the Schnitz are camera/video nazi's, too. It was a good show, except when Conor ruined I Will Be There When You Die. I do like him on the album and I like his songs, but for some reason he annoys the hell outta me. (Speaking of which, I managed to capture a loverly Matt & JJ doing "Outta My Head" on my camera but it is vertical instead of horizontal and I don't know how to edit it to be upright...sound is decent tho...any suggestions?? I will put it on my fb anyway for those who are my peeps). I almost got "Golden" as well but the nazi struck and made me put it away. :'(
JJ was awesome as usual and he was sporting the owl in pocket again. I met him afterward and he was very gracious (Finally got my pic w/him!!). Poster is awesome:

Does anyone remember who sang Temazcal? Conor sings on the album but M sings on the bonus track.

To be fair, it was the band, not the venue, that requested no cameras. And I thank them. I get sick of going to shows and being stuck behind some dunderhead who has to watch the whole thing through his view finder. Happened at Pearl Jam recently. Ruined the show.
I thought Conor really enhanced a lot of the MMJ stuff, like SMokin for Shootin. Loved how he took over that last verse from JJ last night. That's what supergroups are about.
Conor also sang Temazcal.

I would think so, since this one said "Portland." Wouldn't work well in Seattle.
Will there be recordings allowed? Can't wait to hear this.
Being a Louisville native in Portland on business, with nothing to do on a Wednesday night, I couldn't help but randomly wander up to Schnitzer Auditorium last night at 7:45 to see if I could score a ticket. A mere 30 bucks and 5 minutes later, with beer in hand, I'm 2nd row PIT, stage left, texting my brother back in the 'ville to rub it in. Another 15 minutes later, the red curtain opens to all the boys dressed in vintage suits and Jim 10 feet in front. Absurdly bright white spotlights instantly slammed the crowd's faces, ensuring a nice starstruck effect. Needless to say, it didn't take long to realize that this would be a MUCH different experience than their more jam session-improv-like set back in 2003 at a smokey Pittsburgh nightclub.
I'd say it's fair to say that each has grown a lot in the past 6 years. M Ward has really harnessed his voice's range and developed a charming way of being low key on stage while the others do their thing, but immediately owning the crowd as soon as he steps to the mic...to sing his cute stories about the complexities of life and love with a rustic smoothness, and then allowing all to witness his bad-ass skills on guitar between verses. Jim's vocals were spot on all night. His howling backups were mesmerizing. Not as over the top as I've seen him get before, but rather quite befitting of a vintage suit. After solos by Conor, then Ward, and then back to another 3+ song set all together, I was was more than ready to hear Jim take over, but pretty bummed when Conor stayed on stage to join him on Be There When You Die...and even more bummed when he sang the first line. Let's just say that some things should be left alone. Jim did eventually pick it up where Conor agreed to butt out though and carried us along on his magical journey through Bermuda Highway and Golden. Needless to say, I've never been a big fan of Bright Eyes. I've liked Conor Oberst's really old stuff when he was still a young songwriter from Omaha creating and performing beyond his years, but shit man, life ain't all that bad or frustrating...and I think the past 6 years and a little influence from his fellow Monsters have helped lighten him up a little to enjoy the stage and song-writing process a little more and not focus so much on the dagger in his heart each and every time he faces a crowd.
All in all, pretty surreal seeing this group weave seamlessly through their 2 1/2 hour set. They were insanely tight and the sound was perfect. Smokin' From Shootin', one of my top 5 favorite MMJ songs, was a very welcome surprise and completely rocked the house. While clapping afterwards, I couldn't help but look back from my 2nd row seat to see the looks on the faces of those less familiar with MMJ...many exchanging glances with their neighbor with the trademark "WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT AWESOMENESS I JUST HEARD!!!???" Classic.
The only critique I can offer up, in addition to never allowing Conor to sing a MMJ verse again, is the song choice at the end. After a raucous rendition of what I think was Losin Yo Head, which finally got everyone off their feet to move and groove a bit, they closed it out with His Master's Voice, a song with insanely crazy high notes for an end-of-a-long-set Jim James voice. But true to his form, he managed to captivate the crowd, albeit eyes closed, and leave everyone to ponder the deep deep message from within. Not sure if you've taken the time to let this track sink in, but it's nuts...and left me feeling slightly weird after what was otherwise the best show I've seen in 2009.
So after 30 bucks, a beer, and a superb set last night at Schnitzer, this is my 2 cents.
Peace.
Great right up, Johnbky!

Peace.
I agree, except for your take on Conor Oberst taking some of the MMJ lines. I think it was a fantastic touch. He didn't overstay his welcome, but helped weave the songs into the show, making them MOF songs for a night. His presence also helped my 15-year-old daughter, a big Bright Eyes fan, warm up to the MMJ stuff. We were second row, Oberst side.
I am (and was last night too) pretty darn sick, so I can only muster enough energy to touch on my favorite moments not mentioned.
House music before the show was William Devaughn "Be Thankful For What You Got". Nice touch, and an obvious JJ influence as he has mentioned his love for that song. Not enough people knew the song though, a shame. One of my all time favorite soul songs.
JJ thanked the crowd for being respectful by being quiet and attentive at a folk show. Note to future towns....keep your mouth shut ;)
JJ also mentioned the 2 fish on each side of the stage that looked like they were going to eat us. Most of the venue was confused, but we were in the second row of the balcony dress circle and could see exactly what he was talking about. There are 2 faux balconies that have these decorative covers around them. It does look like a big catfish is going to eat something when viewed at the right angle. Nice imagination Jim...love it.
Poster is very nice and homegrown and printed. Each venue should be getting their own poster......at least I think.
I actually liked Conor on I Will Be There When You Die....once JJ took the reins that is.
Jim's voice is on and stellar. Amazing.
Wonderful (The Way I Feel) is awesome with M. Ward. Glad they are playing that since I only saw it at Bridge School. Montgomery & Jim harmonize perfectly....like Peanut Butter and Jelly.
I couldn't control myself on the first notes of At Dawn. I am not sure how loud I said it, but I was all like "yes" or something like that. It was pleasantly quiet between songs so it sounded like I was loud. Anyone hear me?
Jim also bantered about how M. Ward feels like he is who he is because of Portland and we should be proud that we have that influence on him. Something to that sort. very cute b/c I do see M. Ward out and about every now and again. I am always proud that Portland lets their local musicians lead a normal life and don't bug them. I sure don't know what groundbreaking thing I could say to him, so I always leave him alone....
Glorious night...only Jim could get me to muster the energy to go out sick on a Wednesday night. He rewarded me and then some....

I saw a few kids with their parents last night, which made me all warm and fuzzy on the inside. I kept pointing it out to my husband. It reminded me of my younger days when my Mom would take me to concerts because my older sister didn't want to be seen with me or see the show. We saw CSN a bunch of times together, as well as The Grateful Dead and Bob Dylan. Moments like that are super special. You are a good Dad [smiley=tekst-toppie.gif]

OUCH! at least:
9:15: "Smokin' From Shootin'" sounded great, but I can already tell this set is going to need a lot more My Morning Jacket.

Summary of Seattle review to help save 3 minutes of your life.
"I don't like the record and didn't want to go but I went anyway and it was too long because, well you know I didn't want to go in the first place and I don't like the record so, you know, like 10 minutes would have been to long really, because I actually really wanted to see a My Morning Jacket show and I was hoping Carl and Bo would have knocked out M and Conor backstage and replaced them so they could do One Big Holiday and I could go home slightly less angry with the world."
Thanx BH, I was mere seconds away from clicking the link too. It's too bad for dude.....the douchebag probably should have stayed home.
Anybody got a setlist?

OMG, I absolutely heard you from downstairs. I said to Matthew: "HA, I KNOW that was Liz!" So awesome!

Whenever I hear the begining of At Dawn I always picture an old west gun slinger walkin slowly with his spurs a jinglin and janglin.

Brad Klausen is the artist, he's done quite a few PJ posters in the past.
So still no Portland or Seattle setlists? Really want to know if any other MMJ songs were tossed into the mix other than the ones played in BC.

You know, it's okay for someone to hold a different opinion... :-? The reviewer admitted that he had low expectations going in, but he had several positive things to say about the performance too. The review wasn't a baseless slam of the show; the main points he seemed to make was that he didn't agree with how it was advertised, the pacing of the setlist, and the fact he happens to prefer MMJ to Oberst or M. Ward. That's not a crime last time I checked ;)
I'm curious about the poor attendance. The show here doesn't seem to be selling well either; this morning I could still pull up tickets in the dress circle.
Sweet poster.

Ah, cool. ;)
I dunno, sometimes I think the sort-of-negative reviews are more interesting than the glowing ones. It's interesting to see what other people get out of a show, especially people who are more casual fans. Wonder what it looks like from outside our die-hard bubble, you know?

BH says:
You obviously wanted to see a My Morning Jacket show not a Monsters of Folk show, so why did you even go, "with low expectations". Strange.
The other day I was thinking how much I disliked brussel sprouts but I went to the store and bought some, cooked them and ate them, and decided I really wish I had purchased carrots instead.

IMO, $50 is a lot for a concert. I dont think Ive ever paid that much for anything besides a Phish show, and I think its pretty obvious they command a lot more interest and demand nationwide than JJ, MW, and CO combined.
$30 wouldve made more sense to me. I still might end up going, but the main reason I didnt buy tix as soon as they went on sale was because of how expensive they are.
They are $60 here including the fees. I'll be out of town at a different show anyway (and in a sick twist, spending more than that on my ticket ;D) but it just seemed way too steep, especially when I really only like 2/5 of the people on stage.
I'm working on a setlist for Seattle, but in the meantime, here's the MMJ songs played:
Golden (full band), I Will Be There When You Die (JJ, CO), Bermuda Highway (JJ+drummer playing lead guitar), Wonderful (JJ, MW), Look At You (JJ solo), Smokin' from Shootin' (full band), At Dawn (full band)
The show should have been at the Moore....
Quote Wonder what it looks like from outside our die-hard bubble, you know?
I'm definitely in that bubble. I obviously get way over worked by the negativity but it's like someone is bashing my kids, you know, I can't help it.
The comment that burns me the most is when soemone says a show was too long. I just can't wrap my brain around that concept. So if he left halfway thru, would he have loved it? :-/

If you don't like M. Ward or Conor, why would you go see a band that M. Ward and Conor are both in? And then bitch that you had to watch M. Ward and Conor perform? Don't get it.
I don't want to get my hopes up, but I am waiting to see "I will be there when you die" live. It is the last song I would like to see Jim do. I hope I will see it in Louisville. I thought about how great it would have been if he would have sang it at the Rud show a couple weeks ago.

Just got out of the fox, such a good time. Was hoping to get a copy of the setlist but no dice. Don't have a full setlist, but they played the entire MoF album sans the 2 tunes I wanted to hear the most... Ahead of the Curve and Magic Marker. JJ/MMJ tunes were Wonderful the way I feel, golden, Bermuda hwy, masterplan, smokin from shootin, (which absolutely killed it) at dawn. Feel like I'm possibly spacing another. M. Ward is amazing, his voice is like buttah! Down point of the night... some p.o.s. Stole my hat off one of the tables on the floor level. damn you thief!

Masterplan was not played tonight. I know, because I would have gone apeshit if they played it. You forgot Look At You.
yep, no masterplan. And no I will be there when you die. What an incredible show though!! I was a little surprised they didn't play Ahead of the Curve. Smokin from Shootin and At Dawn were the best.
The sound system could have been better, but the musicians were amazing, there was great energy in the room, and the audience was respectful. Really lovely show.
Sorry, my bad. Driving home last night my buddy said they played masterplan. Sorry for the bad info. And yes, forgot look at you, posted that after multiple whiskey drinks! Great show.
Without full playlists from any show yet except Vancouver, I am not able to update with any certainty the full list in the first post of this thread.
So far, the only additional song I can add seems to be "Look at You." And since I don't know where it came in the show, I have added it to a new category: "Known to have been played".
It appears that some songs from the Vancouver show have not necessarily been played at subsequent shows either (e.g., Ahead of the Curve, I Will Be There When You Die, Magic Marker). I am not sure how or whether to keep track of these.
I have been pretty busy too and not able to spend as much time on this - so if anybody wants to chime in with verifiable info, I will make the updates to the list on the first page.

I'd be sad to lose Ahead of the Curve and Lullaby + Exile but I'd be glad to trade them for Sad Sad Song and At the Bottom of Everything. I was disappointed that those two weren't on the first setlist. Now we just need a little O'Brien and omnichord and everything will be perfect.
My guess (hope) is that some of these are "gone, but not forgotten" and will show up again from time to time during the tour... It is still a work in progress and may end up being that until the last show.

I Will Be There When You Die was not played in Oakland.
Map of The World was the first song of the encore.
I don't know where you got that set list from, Tieoptional, but it appears incorrect (at least the order is incorrect). I wish I could help you out more, but I am not familiar with the catalogs of M. Ward and Conor Oberst.
Yes! Map of the world was first song of encore. I've been racking my brain over that - I knew At Dawn wasn't first because I had expected it to be.
And Poison Cup was amazing. What a great show.
I was working with the best available information I had at the time, being what was said to be a photo of the Oakland setlist that was posted at the MoF forum. I guess one problem is that the band may not always follow the printed setlist, even if it is what it says it is...

Greek Theatre review: http://webinfront.net/?p=2625
"It was My Morning Jacket's Jim James, however, who stole the show, his shimmery tenor becoming the de facto star of the evening as well as the lovely binding that held it together; his performances not only elicited the most fervid crowd reactions (especially during his solo take on MMJ's "Golden"), but the most stirring emotions as well, most powerfully so during his spectral, wrenching duet with Oberst on "I Will Be There When You Die" and his gentle closing take on Monsters of Folk's "His Master's Voice.""
Good morning all, hope the day finds you well!
I celebrated my 30th birthday last night at the Greek with MoF, and just wanted to share a couple of thoughts.
I saw mmj for the first time last fall, and have been looking forward to last night since the date was announced. I was almost a little bummed before the show because I figured that I had really ridiculous expectations. Well, the show lived up to everything I had been hoping for, and maybe then some.
I've never been a huge Conor fan, but I really enjoyed the majority of his part of the set, he's a little too showboaty for me, and seems to try a bit too hard from time to time, but I was impressed, and completely satisfied with the role he played throughout the evening.
Ward is fucking sick. He is the member that I have heard the least amount of music from, (only post war) and he just killed it last night. As a bonus, one of my dear friends left for a drink mid-set and ran into him smoking a cigarette. She told him it was my birthday, and he gave her the pick he'd been using, so I got an excellent birthday present in addition to the amazing music!
I could write an essay about Jim James, but I will condense it to this: This man's energy is unique. My friends were laughing at me because of the ridiculous shit-eating grin spread across my face every time he sang. I got to hear three songs I never thought I'd be lucky enough to catch: I Will Be There When You Die, At Dawn, and Bermuda Highway. My mom came with us last night, and I had to profusely apologize for almost crushing her to death from the hug I gave her when they started ...When You Die. Watching Jim James play and sing is, along with one or two other experiences in my life, the closest thing I have ever felt to a religious experience. I would dearly love to just give that man a hug and say, "thank you!"
Mogis was fantastic, jumping around to different instruments and playing them all well, he was quite the workhorse, and the unsung hero of the night in my opinion. Johnson was a perfect fit for this group on drums to my ear, he held everything down perfectly and never tried to do too much or be flashy.
All in all, last night was a fantastic show, and the best birthday I've had in years. I knew this last year, but it has been firmly re-established that I will go see Mr. James any time or place that it is even remotely possible, forever.
Sorry for no specific song reviews, suffice to say that everything was played well, regardless of whether or not I happened to like the particular song, that stuff all comes down to personal opinion, I think. These five guys put on a show properly, and if you like good music, you will like them. Thank you Monsters of Folk!
Great comments, JJB!

I noticed that Smoke Without Fire (Oberst) is not on the list on the first page, FYI. I have kept track of all the setlists from the beginning of time so I appreciate your help! These shows are very confusing, plus most people, including myself are not familiar with every song so it's going to be tough. Even the Oakland list seems to have a few question marks on it and we have a picture of the setlist!!!
Only one way to be sure.......I hope some recordings show up soon.
Thanks for pointing that one out! Slipped through the cracks. :)

So am I the only one a little surprised to not see any of YY's George Harrison covers on the MoF setlists? They're all contributing from their solo and band catalogs and I figured these shows would be a good place to highlight Tribute To, which after all is for a good cause (though I do likes me them hamburgers!).
P.S. just got promoted to "junior member"! How long to the next level? Its like gaining rank in Call of Duty (anyone?).
I am surprised to see that. I figured he would put at least one of Goerge's songs into the set.
I'm wondering if the setlist will change as the tour keeps moving? Prob get tired of laying down the same tunes every night, so who knows? Maybe he'll break out that "All Things Must Pass" in Louisville on Halloween. Please Jim, won't you? :)

I did think they would do a cover or two each night just based on the fact that they did last time they all toured together. Always On My Mind and Girl From the North Country come to mind, but I'm pretty sure they did at least one cover every night.
if anyone has a link to any of the recent performances of "i will be there when you die," it would be greatly appreciated!

You are remembering half right. It was all of them but not Girl From the north country. Don't know the name of the song but it went "Singing a son in the morning, singing a song at night..." or something like that. I do remember that it was those lyrics repeated throughout the whole song though.
EDIT: I t was "Singing a song in the morning" by Kevin Ayers
Singing a song in the morning
Singing it again at night
1 don't even know what 1'm singin' about
But it makes me feel I feel alright
Yeah yeah

That version came on a Mojo Tribute to Bob Dylan. By far the highlight of the disc. It has the Burrito Brothers, Andrew Bird, Roger McGuinn, etc. But I remember being really excited to get this recording.

Just got back to Georgia :'( from the three California shows. While I didn't keep track of the setlist for last night's show, I can say that it didn't stray far from the Oakland and LA shows. Conor and M. changed it up with two other songs during their solos/duets, but I'm not familiar enough with either of their catalogs to tell you what they were. The show started out with Say Please, The Right Place, etc. Jim sang his same set - Golden, Bermuda Highway, Wonderful, etc. Encore was At Dawn to begin and His Master's Voice to end. Of course he sounded A-mazing. He just crushes me everytime I hear him.
All in all, they sounded pretty sick last night. You could tell that Jim was in a great mood - he was laughing, smiling and joking the entire time. As an aside, I was having a pre-game beer at a bar down the street from the Sprekles at about 6:15 and he walked right by me. I was sitting outside, not paying attention of course, and caught the side and back of him as he walked by me. He was smiling and talking on his cell phone. He was apparently on a walkabout and just seemed to be taking it all in. Pretty impressive considering the show was supposed to start at 7 and he wasn't even suited up. Anyway, it made my whole trip.
M. didn't seem to be as "on" as Jim and Conor - maybe it was because no one from the audience gave him any love! :-[
The crowd was a little rowdy, even though everyone stayed seated for the show. There were plenty of "I love you"s shouted out to Jim and Conor but not to M. Make sure y'all give M. some love at the future shows. At one point, a girl shouted to Jim, "I love your beard Jim". He immediately quipped back, "I love your beard." It was pretty amusing.
Overall, a great show, but I think the Greek might have topped last night's. The acoustics were phenomenal in LA and all of the boys were totally on.
Unfortunately I will have to wait another few weeks to see them in Atlanta. :'(

Hello everyone...I've been lurking around here for quite some time, but felt inspired to write about my experience at the Phoenix MOF show.
Fist of all, I thought it was amazing. The Orpheum is a great place to see a show and I loved the old-timey going-to-the-opera feeling you get while you're there. They started with a run of songs off of the MOF cd, and all I can say is that they sound great live. I am not familiar with Conor's music or M. Ward's music, but I found it really fun to be able to see them live when I normally wouldn't have gone to one of their shows. At Dawn was early in the setlist, which surprised me because I have been reading the other setlists and it seemed to be part of the encore in most other shows.
I do have to say, M. Ward is the dark horse. You could tell the audience was definitely less familiar with him, but once he started playing his solo he completely won everyone over and the audience really showed their appreciation. He is a great guitar player and his voice sounded so beautiful live. I went with some people who weren't familiar with him and they are now huge fans after seeing him perform (so am I).
As for Jim, well he was amazing of course. I was so excited to see I Will Be there When You Die and Bermuda Highway back to back. And Look At You was definitely a highlight. One of my friends had never seen MMJ live and said "wow, his voice is just so powerful, when he sings you pay attention." I couldn't have said it better myself!
I don't know if anyone else has experienced this, but it drove me sort of crazy that people sat down during the show. I know a lot of the songs are quiet, but I guess I'm just used to standing at concerts. :)There were so many times I wanted to get up and dance, but I didn't want to be THAT girl. I was so glad when everyone finally decided to stand up during Losin' Yo Head...you can't help but dance during that one!
It really was an amazing show and I loved every bit of it!
So that's it for my very first post... :) I just wanted to share the AMAZING time I had!
QuoteHello everyone...I've been lurking around here for quite some time, but felt inspired to write about my experience at the Phoenix MOF show.
I was so glad when everyone finally decided to stand up during Losin' Yo Head...you can't help but dance during that one!

great first post KP and welcome! Glad you had a great time- everyone who is waiting for their shows are getting more and more antsy with each passing day. I can hardly stand it anymore, myself.

I think they make a great couple. Yimmy & Yuliette could make wonderfull music together. She has FANTASTIC voice. It could be like John & Yoko, but better ;).
Welcome to the fold, KP! :)
OMG, that interview! Hilarious.
QuoteMogis: Definitely, definitely. You know the song "Map of the World"? That's about this tattoo parlor in Louisville that Ward smashed up after they misspelled "Zooey" on his lower back.
NT: Wow. Really, Ward?
M. Ward: (dragging off cigarette; texting furiously on BlackBerry) Yeah. Left 'em a few Franklins. No big deal.
(For the duration of the interview, Ward will not look up from his BlackBerry. Later, one of the other MOFers confides that Ward's She & Him collaborator, actress Zooey Deschanel, is going "Yoko on his ass.")

Just got back from night 2 of the Bridge School Benefit. I didn't go to night 1.
Today they played:
Say Please
Conor Song where the drummer sings (I know they played it in Oakland)
Dear God
Golden
Map Of The World
M. Ward song (pretty sure they played it in Oakland, too)
Losin' Yer Head
I'm really starting to wish I knew the Conor and M. Ward catalogs more.
I'm amazed they played Dear God and Losin' Yer Head acoustically. Sounded good.
Saw Jim come out and sit a few rows in front of me right before Chris Martin's set.
Bridge School is always an amazing experience. Glad the MOF represented this year.
Excerpts from three different reviews of the Bridge School Benefit... different strokes for different folks:
"After that came Wolfmother, doing its blues-rock White Stripes impersonation, and then Fleet Foxes, providing no clues as to why the band's brand of indie-folk is currently so popular. The Foxes were followed by the Monsters of Folk, an all-star indie singer-songwriter group consisting of Jim James from My Morning Jacket, Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis from Bright Eyes and M. Ward. Sadly, these Monsters came across as far less than the sum of their parts."
"Monsters of Folk - a kind-of supergroup consisting of Conor Oberst, Jim James, Matt Ward and Mike Mogis - played a set of theme-park Americana, punctuated by furious guitar duels, pounding pianos and dizzying wordplay."
"Monsters of Folk, the indie-rock supergroup consisting of Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis, My Morning Jacket's Jim James and She and Him's M. Ward, turned in a monstrously impressive display of musical democracy, approaching some of the heights the Band reached in its heyday."

QuoteI have a photo pass and will be shooting the Minneapolis show. Stay tuned....
Cool! Questions:
Have you had one of these before? Are you limited to the first 3 songs? Does the pass allow you to go down front?
I was not given the three song rule this time, but that could change. In terms of access, etc. it really depends on the band, the venue, the show. It just so happens that I have front row center seats in the pit so I can't get much better! As far as access for this show...you'll see on Friday when I post.
Have fun shooting the Chicago show!
Sounds like you won't need to worry about your location and you should be able to get some great pics!
I will be shooting from a box, so not anywhere near as close as you. Still debating, given my location, whether I want to take advantage of the pass, or just sit back and enjoy the show. (I was told that I could shoot only during the first 3 songs.)

After a couple of nights off, the next show is tomorrow night (the 28th) in Omaha.
I was hoping for some clarity and advice regarding pictures. I'd like to bring a "small" digital camera and take a few shots during the show in Boston, from 7th row. No flash, obviously. The Orpheum Theater website indicated cameras are welcome, though not directly in reference to the MoF show. Now I'm reading about photo passes and wondering if I'll get my camera confiscated or something. Any thoughts from the forum?

the orpheum is usually pretty lax about cameras from what i remember. i think it's ultimately up to the artists. i caught the monsters last week in oakland and the guards in front went so far as to tell us to not even text during the show, even stopped a guy mid-message. people still took pictures though. so i wouldn't worry too much about it.

You do not need a photo pass to bring in point and shoot cameras. Generally the rule is that if the lens is less than 1" long, you can use any camera. Photo passes are needed to bring in any pro-gear, lenses, etc. I am shooting for a local paper as well so that is why I need the pass. My advice is that if you are using a point and shoot camera, steady it with two hands and avoid red lights! I got some decent shots of two MMJ shows (Minneapolis and Chicago) last year with a point and shoot (no photo pass), so it can be done. Good luck!

what setting should i put my point and shoot on to get the best colors- don't want to wash out anything and distract the band with a flash. But I dont want to capture a bunch of blurs... i guess it wont be much of a problem if it ain't an MMJ show- a lot less head banging i bet.
of course different cameras will function differently...mer, mer mer. Some cameras you can control a little more than others, but try this: if you have a sport setting try using that: it generally sets your camera to a high ISO (sensitivity) and a fast capture speed. The only drawback of this is that you sometimes get real grainy pics. Mess around with it, but just make sure that you don't use flash and don;t shoot video.

Thank you! much appreciated... just bought the thing so haven't had a chance to take any pictures or play with it yet- bought it because it had 12x optical zoom and reviews said it was great in low light situations.
Just got back from the Omaha show. I don't have the setlist in order but I have what each artist played from their catalogs.

Conor/Mogis/Bright Eyes: Soul Singer in A Session Band, Smoke Without Fire, The Big Picture, Lime Tree, We Are Nowhere and It's Now, At The Bottom of Everything, Hit the Switch

Great pics! Did your ticket say "no cameras, audio, etc" Mine does, but I wanted to bring my little basic digital camera. Anyone?
Yes, they have a VERY strict no camera policy. I had a press photo pass so that is how I got the pics. Also- there was a first-three-songs-only policy. So basically you fire away like mad for three songs! For the shots of the band from the end of the show I had to break the rules though!

you open those doors Soulshine, put your foot in that venue, dont let them find your camera, get as close to the stage as possible whilst walking like you own the joint, then once the show starts you pull that mofo out and take some pictures that prove Soulshine. Was. There.

Following this thread - just joined. Hello to everyone![smiley=vrolijk_26.gif]
The Oakland show was standing GA. Considering how packed it was in the first two sections, taking pics/video was easy. Even if you were spotted, nobody could get to you.
Anyone know how many shows have/had Standing GA?

Sketchy video, I had been told not to use my camera a good 3-4 times last night, so I was trying to keep it low key. The sound is decent though.

HOly SmOkin FrOm ShOOtin! Wow. What a night. Just now getting to sit down and think back. First off, I got to have a cocktail before hand with Tater and Jernigan! Nice meeting your two friends as well Tater. What a nice way to kick it off! Was hoping to run into you guys again afterwards.
I have the setlist but need a bit of help on two Conor songs.
1. Say Please
2. The Right Place
3. Soul Singer In A Session Band
4. Slow Down Jo (It's not easy pulling off a lot of slow quite stuff with a Friday night big crowd but M. and the rest pulled it off quite well. My first time to finally, see him and wow, just wow.)
5. Ahead Of The Curve
6. Lullaby + Exile (So sweet)
7. We Are Nowhere and It's Now
8, Conor song (Lyric - "Stare into a Crowd" I know that's weak but it's all I got.)
9. Baby Boomer
10. Bermuda Highway
11. Look At You (Jim was in a fucking zone for the guitar drumming at the end! This was a turning point for the show I think, the crowd was loving it.)
12. Man Named Truth
13. Vincent O'Brien (So I drink the whole night thru.)
14. One Life Away (M. Ward - first time played maybe? )
15. Wonderful (The Way I Feel)
16. Lime Tree (This sounded great live)
17. Dear God (#3 of the top three moments of the night. I already liked this song but live it exploded the way Off The Record does. I think I remember seeing Jim Playing the Omnichord, the bass and singing all at the same time.)
18. Temezcal
19. To Save Me
20. Goodway (I'm really starting to fall in love with everything about this song.)
21. SMoke Without Fire
22. One Hundred Million Years
23. Chinese Translation (#2 of the top three moments. M did this solo, which I've never heard or seen before, and it was downright amazing. He slowed the "Three questions" part of the song down to a crawl and then sped up the rest. His guitar work was alien like. What do you do with the pieces of a broken heart? Not positive it was this song but somebody yelled out to M, "WHY ARE YOU SO AWEMOME!"
24. At The Bottom Of Everything (Jim actually sang a whole verse lead on this and it sounded spectacular.)
25. Sandman, Breakman and ME (mmmm, mmmm, mmmm, musical zanex)
26. Map Of The World (Honerable Mention, the jam on this song at the end was really good.)
27. Smokin' From Shootin (#1 OK, this is the moment where the forces took over my body and I lost my shit. The two dudes in baby blue jackets I met went nuts with me. It may have been one of my greatest concert 30 seconds of all time. The hair on the back of my neck was standing up. POW!)
28. Conor Song (I got nothin! help?!??!)Hit the switch maybe?
29. Losin' Your Head (Uh Yeah, about 15 songs earlier. Partying with strangers this time. :))
encore
30. At Dawn
31. Whole Lotta Losin' (Steets of Chicago right!)
32. Another Travilin' Song (Great spot for this song. )
33. His Master's Voice (It's been a year since I've teared up at a show. Not anymore. I walked all the way to the front for this one. What an emotionally charged night.)
Got a poster. It's awesome and I'm glad I have it, but it totally sucked carrying that thing around all night. Some asshole sat on it. (Because some dumbass (me) sat it in his seat after he got up and left for the 14th time.)
Went drinkin' with the guys in the baby blue jackets afterwards and the rest is blury. ;) If you guys are out there. Cheers. [smiley=beer.gif]
Now I'm hearing news of KISS in Louisville. Can't wait to hear more. I hope we get at least one recording of a Theatre show.

Unfortunately no. I live in B'more where there will be no MOF. I am contemplating purchasing a single and rolling up to Philly but it is a Monday night. I left the Chicago area 8 years ago and now only make an annual pilgrimage to visit buddies.
Quoteif anyone has a link to any of the recent performances of "i will be there when you die," it would be greatly appreciated!

1. Say Please

9. Baby Boomer

I share many of your goosebump moments. "Smokin.." brought the whole place alive. To see the whole crowd react like that and stay on their feet the rest of the show gave me chills. First time seeing M Ward live (I have most of his albums and liked him going in) and he was absolutely amazing. The guy yelled out "why are you so awesome" after "One Hundred Million Years". M was still on stage in the dark changing guitars and getting ready for "Chinese Translation" and he said, "Thank you Chicago, you're too kind". He totally looked and sounded like some dude from the 50's at that moment, what a performer and persona.
Does anyone know where I can get this poster? thank you!!!!

I wasn't in Chicago, but I'm pretty sure the two songs are The Big Picture (from Lifted) and Hit the Switch (from Digital Ash in a Digital Urn).

The Oakland show was standing GA. Considering how packed it was in the first two sections, taking pics/video was easy. Even if you were spotted, nobody could get to you.
Anyone know how many shows have/had Standing GA?
It wasn't that easy; one of their crew members came up from behind me & grabbed me by the shoulder. I had maybe 5 or 6 people in front of me, they had no problem getting through the crowd to stop people from taking pictures.
Nice review, BH! Glad you had a good time :)

I'm hoping someone from the TO show has the setlist in order - I don't remember the exact order of songs. I might be missing a few - Thanks to withcamera-- for naming the Bright Eyes song that Conor, M. and Will Johnson did together, which they said they hadn't ever done together and I didn't recognize.
It was a great, great show and a pretty good crowd. There seemed to be a lot of Conor Oberst fans there last night, but M. and Jim got great responses too. The only disappointment is that we only got a 1 song encore - probably due to the unfortunate fact that Massey Hall has an 11 PM curfew which tends to cut band's encores pretty short (Wilco just played there Oct. 14 and said the same). So no 'At Dawn' which was too bad. But - can't complain. They played for almost 3 hours.

The song that Conor, M. and Will Johnson did together that they said they'd never done before was a Bright Eyes song called "Kathy With a K's Song" from 2000 ep called Don't Be Frightened of Turning the Page. (Huge bright eyes fan here, can't help it!!! :D )

BH, it was cool hangin with ya before the show. What a night, probably the best sounding show I have ever been to. The venue was spectacular. Sorry we missed you after the show, we were outta there in a blaze of glory to find out the train that brought us into the city was closed for the ride back, we had to take a fucking bus to another station, I felt like I was sitting in a petri dish ( I'm a bit of a germaphobe ). It sounds like you hooked up with a fun bunch for some post show cocktails.
Great review by the way. We woulda had some great pics and video but the usher kept pimpin Jernigan. I think I spent $ 150.00 on alcohol. The drinks were like double shot glasses for $ 8.00 ( wtf ).

Ha! I know. I don't even want to know how much I spent. Sorry to hear about the transportation issues. I looked for you guys for awhile but didn't see you back there so I figured you hit the road. What a great night. We'll have to do it again someday!
I'll chime in on MoF Boston. Last night was exactly what I expected- awesome!. They stuck to mostly the same setlist, though I don't know some of the CO and MW tunes by name. No Temazcal. Brought my mom on her 64th birthday; she loved it! They were pretty quick getting us to put away cameras, so my 3 shots were rushed and show it. And what the hell is the deal with CO spitting (three times) on stage? Aside from his salivary outbursts and the camera nazis, a perfect night.
Here's a link to the photos; best if you squint:

Soooooo stoked for "One Life Away." I've seen the live performance of that on YouTube and it gives me goosebumps. When Jim & M. harmonize on "fraulein" I practically swoon. Couldn't believe it wasn't on the setlist for so many of the shows. Now they're playing it. I'm seeing them at the Beacon Theatre this Sunday and have my fingers crossed.
Also -- to the person near the start of this thread who met Jim and got a photo with him: is the photo available for public consumption? where did you meet him? 'round back? by the bus? out front? at the bar? how hard is it to meet him? I live in New York and kept preparing myself for the day when I would bump into him on the street (I planned to kneel down before him and profess my eternal devotion, only half-jokingly), but it never happened, and now he doesn't live here anymore. I want another shot at it.
Anyone have the setlist from United Palace Theatre in NYC yet?
QuoteAnyone have the setlist from United Palace Theatre in NYC yet?
I wish I could remember everything that was played, but it the set seemed pretty close to what they've been playing. Amazing show. That's all that really needs to be said. That and Bill Murray attended the show.

So while I was watching the hour long Nirvana Live at Reading show on FUSE this morning, a commercial came on advertising the MOF NYC show on the 8th.

I'll be there, but the tickets only say "a 2 1/2 hour event" which is shitty because that extra half hour means the world to me.

don't worry- if they play anywhere near the way the played on friday night, you wont be disappointed. They tore the house down!
Just got back:
- Jim threatened to drop a giant needle that was hanging from the ceiling of the theater on the heads of anyone who wasn't enjoying the show (in the time-honored tradition of human sacrifice, of course)
- There was at least one professional videographer who I only noticed for the set closer of Losin Yo' Head and persisted throughout the entire Encore
- So much new music, 99% of it awesome (only one C.O./B.E. song put me to sleep, but the girls behind me loved it)
- It filled a MMJ craving, but in the same way a Big Mac satisfied a craving for a juicy steak
- My observations lead me to an analogy, girls : conor oberst :: guys : yim yames
When he came out, it was like a thousand dudes started getting boners and swooning all at once. It was strange. They also seemed to be the same ones who kept yelling "yeah jimmy" and "one big holiday" the entire time.
- once again, you can't play At Dawn without Lowdown after it. It's just not fair. But then again, you can't play Lowdown without The Way That He Sings, and thus we have a problem.
Not being familiar with much M. Ward and not ever getting into Bright Eyes, I have to say I was blown away by Ward's solo work, but I don't think I could ever tolerate an entire Bright Eyes show.
They played every song off the album except for Magic Marker and Ahead of the Curve if memory serves. Closed with His Master's Voice.
Budweiser is the official distributor of the Beacon Theater. I could tell because all they had was bud, bud light, becks, and watered down Bass. FU, InBev.
It was great seeing the words "Yim Yames" on a Broadway marquee
EDIT: I was also amazed at how they expanded the songs in a live environment. I'm not including the songs I didn't recognize that were boogie down awesome and made me regret having a seat and no room to stand. For example, the way the drums came in halfway through Dear God, before Conor's part, added a level of intensity to the song that I think it was seriously lacking on the album. Will's drumming was incredible and fun to watch because he was so focused on it. The lighting was incredible as well.
Excellent summary and good analogy re: Jim/dudes and Conor/girls.
Was it just me, or was Oberst a little overrepresented in the set?
Can't wait for an MMJ show. I told my friend, "Remember 'Smokin' from Shootin'? That's what an entire MMJ show is like."
I hung around in the frigid air afterward and got to meet Jim. I bowed down before him in a failed attempt at comedic adulation. He wasn't into it. I got 2 good pictures with him though. Also hoped to meet M. Ward (his records are excellent but he's even better live), but he never showed.

Yes I did find it to be Conor-centric, though the seemed to get it out of the way early. The second half of the show seemed to focus more on YY and he was the defibrillator that would shock the show back to life, even if it was bermuda highway...which once again just sent shivers down my spine.
Also, I think it was on "I Will Be There When You Die" that it almost felt like Yim was giving Conor singing lessons.
At Dawn was the hightlight.
They definitely recorded it. There were signs up on the front door of the Beacon saying 'Recording tonight' and the camera guy was right in front of me w/the set list.
I sat next to two girls, didn't look older than 22, they screamed for Conor the whole time, talked through the rest of the songs, and kept getting up to go get beer and potato chips.
NY audiences are the worst, too. There is so much pretense.

I didn't see those signs, but we got hassled for having phones w/ cameras. I don't know why us, but whatever.
You weren't sitting in the Loge were you? Because you just described the two girls behind me.

we had quite the audience on friday... lots of people sitting in other peoples seats- which is fine until those people show up late to the show. then the seat stealers get pissy and cuss out the staff. It was very annoying and distracting- luckily it was during a conor song- which made it a little more tolerable but very annoying anyway. If it were during a YY song I would have started throwing elbows!
I also remembered that i wanted to write down the setlist- i forgot a pen though... i feel like an awful fan.

There was a lot of hassle going on last night too, but I don't know why. Only one group of guys got booted but they were like "you got me!" and left without a hassle. I don't know why they were being weird, but they kept having more "official" looking ushers just standing on the edge of various rows.
QuoteJust got back:
EXCELLENT review. Thank you so much for capturing exactly what my husband and I were thinking! The C.O. girls were just WAY too annoying, but I felt happy for them in their seemingly euphoric trances. I was trying to embrace C.O. but I must say I felt he was given way too much solo time, and frankly, I found it really brought "down" the house, but not in a good way.
All of that being said, i was THRILLED to see Jim, as always. Also, M. Ward was a TOTAL delight!
Now come on, get us some MMJ dates Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez!

I dont get the whole "attraction to Connor" thing. Mostly I just want to wash his hair and feed him a sandwich. I'm not really familiar with him so maybe its the lyrics and such that make the ladies randy.
Glad to hear you all had a good time! :)
I will be there when you die was the best part of the night, I totally agree that its was like a singing lesson for Conner. He had to have been the downfall of the night, he made me so sleepy. how do you go from kick ass jacket with the howls of Yim to sleepy pete bright eyes. I wasn't feeling that at all.
I had to leave early around 11ish. I'm two weeks away from my due date and this baby was rockin' the entire time. anyone got the set list, i really want to see what I missed because the show was so great i couldn't even imagine what they would play next.
Defiantly fulfilled my jacket needs for the time being.
QuoteQuoteExcellent summary and good analogy re: Jim/dudes and Conor/girls.
Was it just me, or was Oberst a little overrepresented in the set?

Amazing show. Highlight of the night was probably Smokin' From Shootin'.... when they started, everyone was sitting, but by the end, the entire place was standing in awe.
I almost fell asleep during that one Bright Eyes song that just dragged on.....

Was it that song AFTER Bright Eyes song that isn't so bad and I know I've heard in a recent romantic comedy, such as Knocked Up or something? THe one where the words were squeezed into each verse, the guitars didn't match up, and it sounded like the equivalent of the stoner who tells you a story without context for 20 minutes?
no idea, Can't say I'm a fan of Oberst well enough to distinguish that... But.. that does sound like a very, very accurate description

And wow, congrats in advance, C-Bear! Best wishes for a speedy and easy labor.
I was at both Friday and Sunday here in NYC. They played the same set both night with maybe one change on a Conor song. Friday was much more enjoyable, but that could be do to slightly better seats. I was on the right side of the stage, Jim's side!
The energy on both nights was really high, which surprised me reading the board about the previous shows. The band was amped and so was the audience. The songs were much more enhanced live and Will on drums is such a bonus to the group, even the bit of singing he got to do. Him and Jim did Golden, just as they did together on last NYE.
I really enjoyed all the guys singing together as well, they all have such distinct voices. M Ward is such a fantastic writer/singer/guitarist it is great that so many are getting exposed to him, he seemed thrilled with the Beacon audience. And obviously amazing to see Jim, almost a year is too long.... I had not listened to Conor before and he seemed to have a little more time than the others, but...but ... he does write good lyrics. Not many here have mentioned Mike Mogis, he really is a talented musician and completes the sound.
The audience both night had it's handful of jerks...drunks, seat stealers, people who have to come and go and come and go, texters, and last night a guy who seemed to be making a business call loudly during one of the softer songs. Friday two guys in front of me kept yelling James like they were big fans but seemed to spend half the show going back and forth every 20 minutes. This is New York and they were sit down shows so maybe I was expecting too much for others to be fans and want to hear and see what was happening.
And maybe I am off here, but Smoking from Shooting kind of felt like cheating. I almost wish they performed it differently. It had some of the intensity of MMJ but without the rest of the band...it made me a little sad :(
Not wanting to end on a downer, it was such a great weekend and I have been listening to the songs in my head ever since...hopefully this will hold me over till we hear Jim solo or an MMJ tour. Missed you Maureen and Sha!

First let me talk about about Mogis, because you're right. The nerd in me likes to see what people are using/playing/doing and how they do it. He really anchored the band, regardless of any changes in instrumentation, it was like he was always right there giving texture to the whole show.
Next, about Smoking...I felt dirty as well. A good dirty though. Perhaps I found solace in watching Will drum...the triplets on the snare he hit during the verse were so crisp and clear, but I couldn't help but feel that the next jacket I go to is going to feel like home when I hear those songs. The Right Place even.
Finally, I've never considered the NYC crowd to be bad before. I considered the audience based on the band - Queens of the Stone Age play and I expect a certain kind of drunken stoner being all belligerent. Ween plays and there's always a legion of dirtbags feeling up your girlfriend when you're not looking. Wilco plays, and it's a bunch of old men in turtlenecks.
The Philly shows I've been to have had horrible crowds, but it was probably just because they're passionate and they like hammering people.
Also, I'm not going to hate on Conor so much anymore. Mainly, I don't get his music because it sounds too young for me, and I'm only 27, so I guess that makes me old. If the band respects him enough to be a part of it, then I must defer to the experts. Plus, he's not a hack...he is putting all of himself into the music and the stage and it's really just a stylistic difference.

that's actually totally sad, but true. these giddy girls can get pretty stupid sometimes. they need to understand that going to a concert just to see a guy, isn't much of a reason--actually, i shouldn't say that because i did the same for jim and ward ;)

Most of the people on this board know dick about Oberst, his song writing, or his contributions to music over the past 15 years or so.
Go get yourselves an education on what a "classic" record is (Its Morning, I'm Wide Awake) take a break from your bashing for a minute, and listen.
If you don't like what you hear, you can always put Yankee Hotel Foxtrot back on, and pretend you know something about music.

Except I've borrowed each and every one of his albums, even the one with Jim James backing, listened to each at least twice at exceptionally high volumes, and it wasn't impressive. Some songs had no meter and just sounded like a kid strumming as fast as he can while fitting as many words into each breath as possible. I wouldn't define Oberst as our generations Dylan like so many people enjoy doing, and I wouldn't call his albums anything close to classic.
Plus, I'd like to see Oberst use a hubcap as a percussion instrument!
You know, it is possible for people to simply just not like a band that you really like. I know it sounds strange, but while you ponder that, you can go back to pretending that you know something about music and delude yourself into thinking you don't like emo, even if the singer alternates sing-talking and sing-screaming and has a reverse mullet.

Your critique is so profoundly uninformed it doesn't even really warrent a serious response. I love how you try to referance things like "meter", even though you clearly have zero understanding of what that word even means, or how it relates to music, specifically the music found on the album I rec. you check out.
And, "emo?" Are you even serious? I'm a fuckin' Deadhead, not some kid in high school!

Wow, inspired debate lol. Im an Oberst fan going back to Fevers and Mirrors era Bright Eyes. While I like Ward and James more, I gotta say that Oberst might have had the song of the night in Philly with We Are Nowhere and It's Now (w/ Mogis). I can't wait to hear the recording, it was incredible, really blew me away.

I don't think it's petty. It would be a good laugh if someone defending the Jacket on a Bright Eyes board called out some members as ignorant idiots who don't know jack about the Jacket than proceeded to inform them in a patronizing manner of a classic called a Fire in Tennessee.
I'm sure you are a very kind and knowledgeable person sir and I am thoroughly jealous that you were able to make the Louisville show. You have, however, made some rather blunt statements both here and in the sports threads. Being that it is a MMJ forum, I don't necessarily think that honest opinions of Oberst from passionate fans should be discounted so offensively per your opinion. In fact, I would venture that the recent discourse has been rather passive and muted concerning Oberst because it has tended to rub Conor fans here the wrong way.
He has always been known to be a very divisive musician although not intending to be such and I do understand how some members here may be perturbed by the behavior of some fans at the shows. I for one am a big fan and agree with your assessment of IWAIM. :)

I dug the Philly show except for my friend who went with me and texted (seriously) the entire show. Then when we were walking back to the parking garage I asked if we could wait for the guys since they had the little barricade up and the guy motioned to where they would be coming out. She said, "Do we have to?" and kept walking. She drove so I couldn't protest. I immediately thought of all the people on the board who would have waited with me and it made me sad for having brought such a wet blanket friend. I am still sad this morning, so excuse me while I try to remember the great things from the 2.5 hours prior to that.
Here are a few of my unprofessional observations:
1) Jim is electric. I don't know how anyone out there could not like this man. He has a magical soul and knows how to entertain. He is so damn witty and his banter always makes me laugh. When he tilts his head back and really opens up, I swear he could move mountains with those pipes.
2) Conor grew on me, but only a little. He did make me sleepy at several spots. But as soulshine so appropriately said, all I wanted to do was give him a sandwich.
3) At Dawn was a highlight, but Smokin from Shootin gave me the chills.
4) Mike Mogis is an instrumentalist extraordinaire. He could fill in with MMJ anytime.
5) Why is it always the men who shout out things to the band? Example: "We miss you, Jim!" "MY MORNING JACKET!!" (Which set off a loud cheer from the crowd) There was a guy a few rows back who shouted "You guys are pretty damn good." and Jim stepped to the mic to say, "Thank you, sir." I hope you heard that exchange, Ghosts, because it made me chuckle. :)
6) Jim's guitar drumming sparked the crowd.
7) That M.Ward can play the gui-tar. Wow. Great to watch.
8) The setlist was superb, the crowd seemed grateful and the guys knew how to entertain...
9) ...and while I really enjoy the collective sound of Monsters of Folk, I really, really, really miss My Morning Jacket. I am sure Jim has a creative need to make music with these guys, but when his play time is over he needs to get back with the band. Go round them up a la Blues Brothers style and hit the road.
Oh, how I miss them so. :-/
QuoteQuoteQuoteQuoteAlso, I'm not going to hate on Conor so much anymore.
I'm a fuckin' Deadhead, not some kid in high school!
lol

It is not hip hop

The Philly show was amazing. A little short by comparison to the other shows and no "I Will Be There When You Die" but oh well. Crowd was great and very enthusiastic. Yeah, I did hear the guy yell out "You guys are pretty damn good". I think that was right after "Look At You". Nice to hear the crowd so quiet as well during the softer moments. Not like the last time I saw Jacket in Philly where I had to move 4 or 5 times before I found a section of people that were actually there to listen to the music. "Smokin From Shootin" was spine tingling. I definitely got some strange looks from the 2 Conor girls sitting next to me every time I went ballistic for Jim. At the very beginning of Golden, I heard one of them said something like "Geez, he knows this song already". HAH!! Yeah, they did the same for every Bright Eyes song so it was cool. M Ward was great. Actually didn't know a lot of his stuff but I liked it. Mike Mogis was the real suprise of the evening. What a great instrumentalist!! Very impressed!! Not a big Conor fan. Not really sure what the fuss over him is all about. But, he was ok. Definitely was there for Mr. James; and as usual he didn't dissapoint. Loved his wobbly leg dancing!! Hopefully, everyone else enjoyed the broadcast. Very lucky to have XPN in the area.

I've had mixed experiences at Philly shows. I've never been to the Academy of Music, but I've been to great shows at the Tower Theater, but Electric Factory makes me second guess attending even a MMJ show.

Sorry your friend was a bit of a bummer, but it sounds like you had a fantastic time nonetheless! I stayed right near the Academy of Music when I was in Philly last week and they had a big MoF poster up...every time I walked past, it made me smile knowing you'd get to see that show. Glad you had a good time!

Jeez. I go away for a few days, come back, and seems to have gone all middle school.

He had to have been the downfall of the night, he made me so sleepy. how do you go from kick ass jacket with the howls of Yim to sleepy pete bright eyes. I wasn't feeling that at all.
surely someone has told oberst...or he could hear for himself....that "IWBTWYD" is the
last song he needs to be sharing with jim james. it's true that most mortals would suffer in comparison to JJ, but conor, god bless him, sounds downright sickly trying to carry that tune.
i had zero knowledge of oberst before seeing them on halloween...other than brief research which revealed that my 26-year-old niece is a fan (big surprise), and most guys want to punch him in the face. so i went with an open mind, yet fully prepared to dislike the guy as soon as he gave me a reason.
and i have to say, other than that one rather unfortunate duet, he didn't suck. i thought soul singer, hit the switch, and another travelin song were most excellent, and his quieter stuff was pretty strong, although it took jim to save lime tree, imho.
and of course he gets points for doing the whole KISS thing. fun, funny stuff.
i have no urge to punch him, but i'm not going to run out and buy all his albums. and he can't have my sandwich. :P

He couldn't compete with JJ on the duet, but I don't think he ruined it. It worked. His voice is angsty enough for it to work. I think Ward's smokey voice wouldn't have worked so well.

During last nights webcast, I think Conor sounded the best (consistently) out of everyone.

That's about where I came from background wise, and just about where I concluded after the show, too.
I liked soul singer so much I bought the mp3 track. Wasn't as wild about the album version and now I'm out $0.99 ... :'(

Philly was awesome. A bit short and Jim didn't play wonderful, which I really wanted to hear, but whatever. Also, Kerrie and I met Will Johnson before the show at this Irish bar, super nice guy!

There were a few I really wanted to hear (Temazcal, I Will Be There, Sandman, Brakeman,) that werent played but the show was so good that I can't really say I mind.
Did that bar happen to be Fado's? I thought I saw him, we stopped in for a quick drink, but it was pretty dark in there.

yup, it was. You probably saw us too, we were there the whole time he was, he left before us, I talked to him for a sec when he left as well I was outside smoking. Wish I would have known! I had a black sweater on and Kerrie is blonde and she had black on as well. We probably saw each other!

for real- I really like that poster. I'll have to snap a picture of the NYC poster I got- different than the other posters but I think its pretty awesome
I really wanted to get the Halloween one, but I dont know if I want that hanging in my apartment. It is kind of SCURRRRY! I would get up in the middle of the night and be looking around like this :(
Austin artist is Billy Perkins. I really like it but wish it was a conventional size. Cheaper to frame that way.
Loved the show. I'm not a Conor fan so I didn't like him singing verses on I Will Be There When You Die and Smokin'. Other than that than that it was amazing.

Brad (Angry Ewok) should have some good insight into this as he was lucky enough to do a few posters for some southern dates on the Evil Urges tour. Unfortunately he hasn't been around here much lately as he is too busy working on his plan to splice the genes of Bear Bryant and Nick Saban into an all powerful Crimson Tide ruler of the football universe.

I'm curious too. I never did ask him how he scored that gig.
I'm not sure if this is how it works all the time, but I know with some poster artists, the musicians are fans of their art and commission the poster. Patrick Carney of the Black Keys is a big fan of Dan Grzeca's work, so Dan does their posters whenever they're in Chicago (and he did the Dan Auerbach posters this summer, too).
