No Jason Isbell - that's weak.
That's awesome.
John Mayer is not.
If they are going to put Warren Haynes on there they either need to, Not call it "NEW" guitar gods, or go ahead and put Thurston Moore and Lee Renaldo ahead of John Mayer.
Mike Cooley
You really don't think Mayer is a great guitar player?
I've not heard a single song by John Mayer...
Great news for Jim & Carl :)
No nod to the DBT boys is unfortunate.
I don't think he should be number 1! But not a bad list. Omar should be up higher.
QuoteYou really don't think Mayer is a great guitar player?
He's a very very good guitar player, he is not great and not very original in the way he plays the guitar.
Jim and Carl at #7! They obviously heard the Dondante solo. 8-)
What a strange list... :)
I have heard good things about Mayer's live show, but the stuff that gets airplay doesn't seem worthy of being number 1 on any list, let alone the guitar god list.
Derek Trucks (Band) was one of my top 10 shows of 2006..he is good :) Can't go wrong with Warren, either. I do think that John F. is a ridiculously good player.
But, the last time I saw Kaki King (granted is was a while back) she was no where near guitar god. She was interesting, but not so much that I've gone back to see her again.
I like the RS got out of the top 40 for a bit for this list...there is hope. :)
Yeah, the radio doesn't give Mayer's guitar the respect it deserves. He's gotten a lot better since his first two albums. I hate Daughters and Your Body Is A Wonderland, but his new stuff is pretty good.
Shocked to see Chuck Garvey & Al Schnier... :o
Nels cline and Adam jones are the most original on the list.
John mayer is great rip off artist
I saw both guitar duos this year, MMJ and PJ.
Jim andCarl deserve to be out front of Mike and Stone.
I'm a BIG TIME Pearl Jam fan and I also agree that Jim and Carl should be ahead of Stone and Mike. I also think John F. should be number one without question. Warren Haynes needs to be ahead of Derek Trucks even though Derek is badass. Personally, I would put Jonny Greenwood at number two.
Derek Trucks is coming. Should I go?
Do you like the allman brothers, govt. mule, southern rock, slide guitar playing? If you answered yes to any of these questions then YES!
In that case i'll probably go. I knew he was in Allman Bros. Band. The venue is badass, its an old church. I just saw a couple shows there.
He blew me away when I saw him with Eric Clapton last year.
That list isn't bad. However, I'd put Jeff Tweedy on it, ahead of Nels Cline. Don't care if he's not as techically gifted. Jeff's solo on At Least That's What You Said is one of the most heartfelt of all times. Go Jeff.
Also, add the incredible guitar duo of Steve Wynn & Jason Victor.
Maybe Dan Auerbach from The Black Keys?
Ah, complaining about lists, an interesting pass-time ;D
Great to see the boys on that list. Is it really intended to be ranked? I mean, they can't be real serious about the order if they list the same band members together right? Like Jim and Carl just happen to be 7th and 8th? Anyway, I think these lists make great conversation pieces. I would sure like to see M.Ward on there but I guess he's probably not big enough for a list like this.
By the way, in a few years we might see the first female on this list. I saw Viva Voce open up for the Shins last night. A two person band with a women on lead and a man switching between drums/harmonica/acoustic/therimin. She fucking rocked! She came out and sang on several songs with the Shins as well.

Sorry, I know this a very personal subjective conversation, but you are on acid. Carl and Jim have chops no doubt. But to put them in the same conversation with Stone and Mike is a little premature. They have been doing it for 15 years and continually get better. I'd say Jim is just recently getting more free with his style and solos. I've seen MMJ live probably 12 times, PJ probably 60 and there's no comparison. I've yet to see either Carl or Jim just "go off" and totally leave the context of the song and just thrash on a solo.
Mike is one of the 5 best ever. Yes I said it. Nope he's not the most original, in fact he plays better Hendrix than anyone since that other famous Hendrix imitator...Stevie Ray Vaughan.
It's not about Mike's style or his speed or his technical skills...you can't compare Hendrix and Yngwie, they are two totally different players. But Yngwie's just a scientist, a technician, he has no feel or emotion. Mike has heart. He wails on a Strat and can literally make this machine, this apendage, cry.
Please try to obtain and listen to the following:
Reach Down - Temple of the Dog. Either the album track or the 2003 PJ Santa Barbara show.
Evenflow - Any version will do
Alive- The studio outro, please.
Garden - Any live version from before 2003.
Machine Gun - Mike solo doing Hendrix cerca 2001
Little Wing- 1995 live version is the best but the 2006 versions hold up
Immortality-Any live version
Please anyone on here that loves blues guitar and previously overlooked Mike McCready because he's in Pearl Jam and you don't like Daughter, make an effort. He is a hidden gem and he's all about heart and tone and emotion.
Mike McCready rules.

He had to go to the hospital afterwards...

Ok, then you haven't seen them nearly enough. I agree Mike is a Great guitar player and that strat becomes part of his body at some points. I've experienced Evenflow live more times than I care to mention. I've heard him kill the solo on "Immortality" with an acoustic guitar. Like you said, it's all subjective. Mabey I've heard every solo Mike can pull off so many times that I take it for granted.
QuoteI've yet to see either Carl or Jim just "go off" and totally leave the context of the song and just thrash on a solo.
I'm ready to be enlightened. Please refer me to where I can appreciate this.
Maybe you have taken Mikey for granted. If you're talking about the Benaroya version of Immortality and you were there then I have no idea why we're having this discussion.
I'd rest my case on that solo.
I would start with the "Okonokos" dvd. If you can get your hands on it the "Acoustic Chorale" dvd is a good testiment to how amazing Carl really is. Live versions of Don Dante, I Will Sing You Songs, Strangulation, I Think I'm Going To Hell, One Big Holliday, Lay Low, Honest Man, etc. etc. I've seen Jim rip the solo's on Don Dante and OBH litterally inches from my face and that might make me a little biased. I'll just say you could make great cases for both guitar duos. I love them both, I think I'm just more interested in Jim and Carl at this point. Carl has really broke through lately as far as just "going all out" live. I'm sure we can both agree that all four of them should be ahead of John Mayer. :)
ahhh...
no Robert Randolph
no Dan Auerbac of the Black Keys
no Cat Power - need some female love.
and the worst is...
NO PRINCE?????!!!!!!?????!!!!!!!wtf that guy can do anything on the guitar
but i guess everyone can be on there right?
but yay Jim and Carl. Once this next album drops i'll finally be able to tell my friends im going to go see My Morning Jacket play and they wont be "who?". Little by little...(Spin #8 album of the year, Jim and Carl #7 best guitar players) MMJ is getting love.
Nice seeing Adam Jones - he could be #1 in my books.
Congrats to Jim and Carl. They definitely deserve to be on the list. And I'm glad they gave the nod to Jim as well. I wish they'd write about them more often. Everytime they write them up is glowing but not often enough. They rated Z in the top ten albums of 05 and then don't mention them again until now and they release okonokos in the meanwhile! (other than a one sentence blurb about It Makes No Difference). but whatever.
DFP, Prince would not be a "new" guitar god. He's been a guitar god for close to 30 years now.
this is a good time for us all to finally get that group tattoo we've been wanting. Everyone has to go out and get the number "7" tattooed on their right bicep. then we're taking a group photo. NO WHINERS. then we're sending it via satellite imagery to Jim and Carl.
John Frusciante? No... nope. Kaki King is an intersting choice. ladiez.

He had to go to the hospital afterwards...
:o That was hauntingly beautiful. I pretty much had chills the whole time. Thanks for the link. I've only seen PJ once, and I wasn't too impressed, but jesus, that video pretty much changed my mind. So, did he leave the show after that video ended to go to the hospital? Can you elaborate? I know little to nothing on PJ...
Also, I'm thrilled that Jim and Carl made it. That's awesome!
I don't know the specifics of the story. PJ are a pretty private band. That song was the closer for that show and afterwards, the legend goes that Mike had to be hospitalized.
here's another one:

PRINCE may not "new" but neither is
3. John Frusciante - Red Hot Chili Peppers
4. Luther Dickinson - North Mississippi Allstars
5. Nels Cline - Wilco
6. Warren Haynes - Allman Brothers Band, Gov't Mule
them alls pretty old..right???

well, not really. and not that it really matters, but I'm bored so here it goes...
3. John Frusciante joined RHCP in 1988 and was only seven years old when Prince signed his first major label contract
4. Luther Dickinson helped form the North Mississippi All Stars in 1996
5. Nels Cline while nearly as old as Prince did not join Wilco and came into reall fame until 2004
6. Warren Haynes founded his band in 2003, gov. mule in 1995, and joined the Allman Bros. in 1989
Prince's first major label record came out in 1978, an entire decade before these guys hit the block.

just got my issue today in the mail. i'm a little upset at rollingstone, again. i thought their paragraph on carl/jim sucked, i didn't like it. sure its nice to see that they made the list, it is. i'm just upset at the fact that rollingstone always has something good to say about mmj, this time around it didn't feel that way.
here's the way i see it: your boss said you did a good job, but not good enough.
sure they gave them respect, but i thought they disrespected them as well. is it just me?

yeah, it kinda pissed me off, too.
It's nice that the guys get attention from RS. My opinion of RS aside, any and all press is a great thing as who knows who picks up these mags and reads em.
Maybe someone should list the 20 best music magazines.
Heres the paragraph:
Skynyrd Art-Theorists
Jim James & Carl Broemel
[/size]On record, My Morning Jacket are a great bunch of bands, depending on singer-guitarist James' songwriting (country, art pop, barroom-brawl rock). Live, James and Broemel are an avenging Lynyrd Skynyrd front line, fattened by the wrecking ball swing of bassist Two-Tone Tommy. James and Broemel play nothing new. But their roaring classicism is an ecstatic reminder of how a loud guitar, in the right hands, can make the world go 'round.
Essential Performance: "Run Thru," Okonokos(2006)
I have several issues with this paragraph, 1. barroom-brawl rock WTF??? nothing about any of MMJ's music makes me think barrroom brawl 2. the nothing new comment really really chaps my bag 3. and to me the loud guitar comment comes off as RS saying thats all the band is, loud guitars.
Rolling Stone is shit!
I would like to see a good barroom brawl while "lil Billy" was being played really loud.

i kind of was perplexed by this as well. in the past RS had given the Jacket much love and i assume that ranking Jim and Carl as 7th constitutes props, but the article mentioned was not at all laudatory.
my problems:
(1) i understand when newbie journalists compare MMJ to southern rock, but RS has written several pieces about them and reviewed 3 of their albums now. if they can't come up with anything better than Lynyrd Skynyrd then David Fricke needs to go back to journalism school!
(2) and how do they play nothing new? what does this even mean? i would say the Jacket is pretty damn original. or course they sound like other bands, who the hell doesn't? but MMJ is one of the most original and REAL sounding bands that exists on the face of the Earth today!
(3) i did kinda like the loud guitar comment, but i guess i took it a different way. Jim and Carl turn up the guitars to 11 Spinal Tap style and then rock your face off. they don't need to play like Hendrix, or Van Halen, or so and so...they just f'in rock. their rock isn't pretentious and it doesn't take a guitar master to be able to play it, but its fun, its loud and its real.

See, this is a good example of why they should just contact the members of the forum to write about the band. I would have much rather seen that in Rolling Stone. Good stuff.

thank you!
personally, i think Jim and Carl can play the guitar real well. anyone else agree??
this is OUR band, not Rolling Stones. Im sure Phish fans who read Rolling Stone are asking 'where's Tre?' Fuck the review...just be happy more people will see the name My Morning Jacket and be interested. Someday people will get it. i know it.
But I agree, the review didn't represent very well...and it did piss me off. I JUST DONT KNOW HOW I FEEL! AHHHH.
Barroom rock? "bars are dark and lonely" right?
QuoteI would like to see a good barroom brawl while "lil Billy" was being played really loud.
if i was seventeeeen....
Can't believe this hasn't been pointed out but if you actually READ the article at the beginning Fricke states
"This celebration differs from our 2003 survey, 'The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time,' in some ways. The guitarists here are, by the measure of rock's extended history, new, Most under forty, and all have made their impact in the last two decades. Also, THERE IS NO RANKING. Numbered lists can be fun; we still get blowback from last time about who should have been...." blah blah blah
Who would actually put Mayer #1 anyway?
Under the criteria the list is pretty good. Randolph and even the fading Ben Harper should have been on the list. I believe Junior Brown made the 2003 100 Greatest list or else he's a nobrainer for this one. All the bands/artists remain active too which makes sense. Luther Dickenson is still riding out the influence and impact of the Allstars first album since all the studio releases since suck ass - his brother Cody is a more interesting musician. Too bad the list stuck mainly to rock acts but then again, RS was once a revered rock magazine. I would have dropped Al from moe.. He's boring.
Oh yeah, the earlier post calling Stevie Ray Vaughan a "Hendrix imitator" is wrong. Stevie loved Jimi (what guitarist doesn't?), but Stevie's style was rooted in Texas blues where Jimi channeled Chicago blues via outer-space. Stevie was far more bluesy than Jimi too.
Prince is not a "New" guitar God. Neither is Warren Haynes, but at least Haynes is still something 'current' and happening in terms of productivity.
John Mayer absolutely deserves to be on the list, and I don't mind seeing him at No. 1, either. The kid may have had some shitty songs back in the day, but that shouldn't effect how he's listed as a guitarist. Check out the 'Crossroads' DVD's... He puts up a damn good fight on stage with Buddy Guy, BB King, and Eric Clapton.
Personally, I feel Jim and Carl should be listed individually... but I don't want to be the one to have to choose one over the other.
:D
what a fucking joke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!John "pretty boy"Mayer..never heard one thing by that shit head....never plan to..goes against everything I stand for...everyone should check out Paste magazine...it's what RS use to be

Quotewhat a fucking joke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!John "pretty boy"Mayer..never heard one thing by that shit head....never plan to..goes against everything I stand for...everyone should check out Paste magazine...it's what RS use to be
Um...right. I saw Mayer live as Herbie Hancocks Guitar player, and he fucking killed. And like others said, if you never heard anything by him, how the hell would you even know if he was a good guitar player. This is one of the stupidest things I have ever read.
Every time I've seen video of Mayer live, he kills on guitar no matter what mush he's playing. To repeat: THE LIST IS IN NO ORDER!
i, personally, was ecstatic to see jim and carl included in the list, the addition of carl was what put this band over the top in my mind (no disrespect to the earlier guys and certainly not to jim, but carl breathes a great new life into the band), we all worship the jacket, not everyone is as sold as we are and RS is hardcore mainstream, but they are, and have been, big fucking buisness for a long long long time. i'd go money that jim and carl are pretty pleased to be included in such good company, as far as mayer goes, i think his songs suck ass, but that kid can play his ass off, randolph and harper should have been on there, maybe kenny wayne also, i saw him open for dylan and he rocked voodoo chile like the ghost of jesus h. hendrix was in him, also j. mascias, but he's not really that young either. it is all subjective though. opinions are like assholes, the RS list was NOT ordered and our heroes (lay low at the tabernacle made me a firm believer) get yet another mention in mainstream media, WTF more can you ask for, peace bitches, sorry for the rant, cya in 2 weeks--athens night 2 and asheville baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ya'll need to check out DBT at the 40 watt, and at the handlebar in my homeplace!!!!!
m. ward at the orange peel!!! son volt too!!!!
Mayers cool in my book. his new album is solid and he really CAN play the guitar. I mean fuck - he closed out the Telluride Blues and Brews Fest - making Lou Fucking Reed play infront of him. thats a fuckin honor in itself, not to mention all the people he's shared a stage with. We should ask Herbie Hancock and Keb Mo if they think Mayer sucks...
why he's #1 - he's mainstream and he's really really fucking good.
Quote

For the 4th time, the list is in no order.
John Frusciante was a guitar God 16 years ago when he was 21 years old when the Peppers released Blood Sugar Sex Magik. (even 18 if you count mothers milk)
Dean and Robert DeLeo of Army of Anyone (ex Stone Temple Pilots) need that nod most definately.
Mayer shouldn't be # 1 though. Why is he #1? Is the list in order or what?!
QuoteMayer shouldn't be # 1 though. Why is he #1? Is the list in order or what?!
i know i might get slated for this but had that list been in order i would've had Johnny Greenwood and Ed O'Brien much much much higher and maybe even add Thom Yorke with them. In my opinion they are 3 of the most original envelope pushing guitarists out there. Especially Greenwood. if you look on guitargeek.com you can see what pedals he has. he has a home made one on there. point is he knows his stuff, his technology and that's why Radiohead will be one of the most influential bands of the current century...and possible last century.
QuoteDerek Trucks is coming. Should I go?
Absolutley!!!!!! Derek Trucks is an incredible guitar player! The ticket will be around $15-$20 and you wont be disappointed

Please do not miss it. I just purchased a couple of albums, Songlines and Live at Georgia Theatre. They are totally awesome. Especially when he plays the slide. If I am suggesting one, probably the live one since he is such a jam king.

CLARK INDEED.
Ok, it's been a long time since i've been here but just been taking a few peeks lately. Anyway, had to chime in. I totally agree with the Doug Martch of Built to spill, and one of my favs of all time from one of my favorite bands of all time, Ronald Jones, formally of the flaming lips. This guy was amazing, and I miss his contribution to that band so much. They might even still be my favorite band if he was still with them.
Quote They might even still be my favorite band if he was still with them.
Are you kidding me? They're done there best work without him.
No offense, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I do like the soft bulletin and the others that came after that, it's just that I've been listening to this band since like 1993 and nothing beats transmissions from the satellite heart, hit to death in the future head, priest driven ambulance and clouds taste metallic (although that's my least favorite of those four). and yes i know that ronald was only on transmissions and clouds, but no one else in that band, not even the musical genius Steven Drozd could do with a guitar what Ronald Jones could. Those were the days when the lips rocked (but in a way none of their contemporaries did), now this pop/orchestral stuff gets a little old after a while and the fact that wayne coyne used to be so whimsical and esoteric and I held the same level of admiration for him that I now hold for someone like Jim James is sad. He seems to have become some sort of pseudo metaphysical sage. His lyrics used to have a lot to say about life both dark and funny and whimsical, but now it's serious and the whimsy and humor seem contrived. I'm digressing, sorry. Don't get me wrong I still admire the flaming lips and for 10 straight years I was absolutely obsessed with them, I just miss their old sound, but one can at least say they're not repeating themselves with each album. But I sure do think Ronald was a guitar virtuoso and I sorely miss him. Sorry for the rant, no hard feelings I hope.

I haven't been listening to them for all that long but i do have Clouds and Transmissions and I can't get into em as much as their last 3 albums.
That's ok, just try in a priest driven ambulance, a lot of people swear by that one. I once spoke to steven drozd at a show and he said that was his favorite album of theirs (he didn't play on that album).
Oh yeah, I just forgot a couple of other amazing guitarists. What about Thurston Moore and Lee Renaldo of Sonic Youth they did some revolutionary stuff that I don't think had been done too much up until that point. Also a personal favorite of mine is David Pajo when he was in Slint.

I wouldn't call Moore and Renaldo "new" guitar gods. They have been around since the 80's and have made many past Guitar Great lists. Sonic Youth's music remains fresh and vital and young, so I can see why you'd include them.
wayne coyne talks too much at his shows and totally kills you high when your there.
This is my first post ever, but I just wanted to say that I'm pretty sure Warren Haynes, Mike McCready, Omar-Rodriguez Lopez, the guys from MMJ and especially Tom Morello can all kick John Mayer's ass at everything.
Sorry about the John M. blasts...finally went out and got a few of his cd's...really captivating stuff...then I went out and got the latest issue of Tiger Beat...raced home and tore out the freakin' centerfold...John boy is now on my living room wall right next to my Gary Glitter shrine...mark the tape folks I've never been so wrong in my entire life...let's all hope MMJ and John boy tour together..they can call it the Hair and Hair Care Tour........LOSERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
oh and if you want to hear somereally good stuff ....check out his FUCKING GARBAGE on the Dave Chappelle show...now that is TOTAL DOGSHIT
