Title: Merriweather Post Pavilion Travel Package
Post by: gideons on Feb 11, 2010, 03:33 PM
Love how MMJ is doing a travel package, but $500 (250 a person) is too steep for me, especially since my friends and I are 20, and open bar means nothing to us.....I like to see my favorite bands sober

Anyone know when and where tickets will go on regular sale? Ticketmaster doesn't have em listed. I know this has already been raised, but I'm trying to get an answer. I hope MMJ does GA for this place because the venue does offer it. Driving from Hartwick College, just want to see the Jacket with a good view since it will be a bit of a drive.

hope I didn't come off snobby :)

I'm also hoping for GA!  See you there  :)

Oooof. That's a good idea, but too pricey for me! :) It's nice for the out of towners, but luckily I can stay with friends nearby.

I vote for pre-concert tailgating. Wooooooooooooooo.

*since the 'Roo lineup does not include MMJ, I am focusing all my energy on these tour dates*  :D :D :D

I was wondering about that actually - is Merriweather a tailgating kind of place, or a meet-at-a-nearby-bar kind of place?

I'm down for either   :)

Tailgating definitely and as for any bars, it's kind of a hike to/from the pavilion. I know there are some locals on the board, so please correct me if you have any suggestions.

Oh, yeah and I'm down for anything, too. In fact I'm so excited my head might burst... :)

The package actually looks like a bit of a rip off...unless I am missing something??   I looked up the hotel and a double is like $120.  I guess it's the appeal of the guaranteed reserved tix?  But still....seems a little steep for the average fan.....
Would also like to know more about the scene, whether it's tailgating or local pub kinda place??
Either way, I cant wait!!!

I know that tix go onsale next Firday.  Is there a presale?

Ok, lots of questions....that's enough for now....  ::) ::) ::)

I havent been to Merriweather, but my assumption would be that its slightly outside of a fairly big town/city.

aka - Tailgating would be the best option.

And even if it wasnt, a venue as big as Merriweather has to have a huge amount of parking so I figure the tailgating will be good times

What? Tomorrow? I thought it was 19th!!! (Did all this snow put me in a time warp and I missed a week???)

NJ...that's not too bad. I am coming from Hershey, PA.

If there is a pre-sale, they should put up the password on the board here. Keep checking back.

And yeah, I am not too familiar with the ins and outs of Columbia, but I've been to MPP a few times and it is in a commuter town, basically. MPP is literally right off the highway and there is a big shopping mall and some other places nearby. The pavilion is in the woods and I know some people knock it, but I like the venue. The one restaurant I went to near the place was UBER expensive. I'm grabbing a case of Blue Moon and putting it in my trunk. :) I'll share!

Ok, I think I have been in a time warp as well, though I have seen the 19th as the date....
Blue Moon in the trunk sounds superb!!!  What a great way to ring in spring ;)
Ok, hopefully we will find out if presale tix are available tomorrow....

not sure I understand the hate for this package deal.  500bucks really isn't that much money for a weekend away.  not sure about the location but it's cool the jacket is making different options available.  it's also kinda cool they've got a pre-party for the fans setup as well.  either way, get used to the high prices.  It seems highly unlikely MMJ will ever be 25bucks a ticket again.  Promotional shit like this is only the beginning, no need to bitch about it.  I'm sure whoever ends up going with the package will have a great time, not sure what's the harm.

unless this is setup by ticketbastard/livenation and they're just milking the money from our precious little super fan tits.  that seems unlikely though.  have fun at the show you whiny bitches.   ;)

No, $500 isn't a lot for a weekend away...but for the cost of the $240 pre-party, you could probably hit up another date on the tour.

S'all I'm saying   ;)

I hear ya.  The Jacket needs to get paid though.  They're so ballin now they can set you up with a hotel and party if you want.  Hopefully when they're making millions they'll give us a breakdown that's a little more workable.  It's an interesting idea.  at least it's not a motel 6 or something.

I dont know how much $$$ you make selling your mexican brick weed in D-town, Sticky Icky, but $500 (okay, $250/per person) for one night sounds like a lot to me

Hey guys - I've been lurking for some time but just thought I'd shed some light on Merriweather since it's my home turf.
Tailgating at Merriweather is definitely risky. I've had many friends arrested at various concerts in the past for drinking underage (understandable) and other times just been forced to pack up all the tailgating fun because of their "No Alcohol" rule. They patrol like crazy at merriweather.

I would recommend not parking on any merriweather lots, but there's an office complex parking garage that is literally right next door without all the regulation and that gets to be a fun party.

Also, you want Pavilion tickets for this show (besides the obvious reasons)! I was at the Phish show this summer on the lawn and it was terrible! We literally couldn't hear for the first half and then the sound was off the rest of the time. I also went the entire show without ever even seeing the stage!

Let me know if you have any other questions about Merriweather since I have been many times! Hope everyone is excited for an awesome May Day!

No alcohol tailgating?! WTF is that??? Is Merriweather not in America?!!?! I understand the underage thing, but I thought I was going to Maryland, not Berlin.

Also, quite surprised by your venue comments. Ive been to a lot of amphitheaters, and although Id rather be in Pav, I cant say Ive ever been in a lawn where I couldnt hear the music clearly, let alone at all.

Can anyone else whose been to Merriweather chime in on this?!

I have no idea about the alcohol policy, other than it seems like tailgating may be problematic..
As for prices, based on the other shows that have been onsale, I am thinking somewhere between 35-45 per ticket...

It's really hit or miss. I've been to a number of shows where tailgating isn't an issue, but I've been to more shows where they stop the tailgating since technically, no tailgating is their policy. I would park somewhere other than the merriweather lots and tailgate there, there's an office parking garage literally right next to the lots that is fun and generally a good party and I've never had any issues there (it is also the fastest way to get out). I can give more details on how to get to that lot if people need/want but it's pretty easy.

I have no idea on ticket prices as they're generally on par with whatever the rest of the tour is.

Last, if you do end up in the lawn for one reason or another your best bet is to get as close to the front as possible so you can see the stage, but the only downer is your calves will kill you the next day from the incline of the slope!

Don't let the tailgating issues discourage you from going form this awesome show, there's plenty of other parking lots to party other than merriweather lots.

If it's anything like our amphitheater, the only reason they don't let you drink in the parking lot, is so that you have plenty of room in your belly to purchase several $27 shitty draft beers inside the venue.

Chiming in...I'd be hard pressed to do lawn at this venue. The overhang on the pav is so low, the views are just wretched.

And ladies (at least those of you who have been to Wolf Trap)...the bathroom situation is the pits, as in way too few and very long lines.

On a positive note, it's only 30 minutes from me.  :-/

How hardcore are the pavilion employees, i.e. regarding people dancing in the aisle, checking stubs once your already in the pav, etc??

If you get Pavs youre going to stub me down Sass, right?  :)

Also, what are we lookin at for ticket prices?

I've partied in many a parking garage and it is def the way to go. However, if you have to pee dont hold it b/c you could get uromisotisis poisoning and die

having to hold in piss at a show is the worst.

seems strange tailgating is such an issue.  at DTE they have the "put your booze in a cup"unwritten policy.  If the numerous cops spot you with a beer bottle, depending on the circumstance, they'll make you pour it out.  But if you use a random plastic cup so that nobody will have an idea what you're sippin on, in most cases the cops will focus on the blatantly obvious minors who do not follow the unspoken rules of the lot.  Can they actually kick you out or ticket you if you're of legal age to drink?  I thought this was america.  wtf clear channel?

QuoteChiming in...I'd be hard pressed to do lawn at this venue. The overhang on the pav is so low, the views are just wretched.

And ladies (at least those of you who have been to Wolf Trap)...the bathroom situation is the pits, as in way too few and very long lines.

On a positive note, it's only 30 minutes from me.  :-/

is it like blossom in Ohio?  huge lawn, low roof.  whoever built some of these venues made some pretty stupid logistical errors.  these are the biggest venues MMJ has played to date right? minus the festies and MSG.   should be interesting to see how the energy is with so many fans.

They packed Radio city and that show was a banger... Personally liked it better than MSG because yim wents nuts and ran up the rafters. And also to mention that Caleb from KOL had seats behind me!

Did you happen to turn around during the show to see a face that looks something like  :o "oh shit these guys rock so much harder than my band"

Yeah seriously the crowd at Radio city was great. I doubt KOL gets the same energy. Love the KOL but MMJ is a better rock band...after the show everyone was howling and this NYC garbage truck just leand on his horn for a solid minute. Hence the reason why I love rock music=Best drug ever.

Merriwather is probably 4 times the capacity of RCMH, and not to mention outdoors. Ive very interested to see how that show pans out as Im pretty sure Bonnaroo is the only outdoor "venue" theyve played that is even close to that size

Really? I didn't realize that they hadn't done more outdoor big capacity shows.  Since we are up in the northeast, we have only seen them indoors....which has been amazing everytime.
CANNOT WAIT!
Also praying for NE dates to come!!

Not that Im aware of...They typically played the 10-12K general admission type venue.

Not sure what the other venues are like this tour, but Id guess Merriweather is like 25K capacity

19k is merriweather capacity.

Anyone have a guess as to whether there will be a GA pit in the front?  Curious after reviewing seating charts.

Maybe Im just pessimistic but Id be ecstatic if I just get Pav tix...If youre hoping for pit, prepare for disappointment and plan accordingly

I think this show - or at least Pav tix - is going to be a lot harder of a ticket than people realize

Not going to do the package, but interested if there is a pre-sale.  I really want to get top notch seats for this one.  Haven't seen them in too long!

This could be the reason why the pre sale was pushed back...

the price came down a little and when i looked earlier, the site said that tix were your choice of GA or PAV, which is very cool.  i'm wondering if the price may come down even more if they aren't selling well.

just my thoughts.

I got a hotel room at the sheriton http://www.sheratoncolumbia.com/

for 120, my 2 tix came out to 104, total 224, so the package would get me 2 posters and a 2/3 hour open bar party for around 200 bucks.

Love these guys but thats a little pricy for 2, 30 dollars posters, and a 140 dollars bar tab for 2.

Also from the merriweather FAQ

• No bottles, cans, or coolers.
• Only one empty or factory-sealed water bottle allowed per customer.
• No outside beverages.
• Personal food items in clear, disposable, non-glass containers are permitted.
• No baskets, professional cameras (with a removable lens), or recording devices.
• Alcohol, grills and glass containers are not permitted in the parking areas.
• No laser pointers, weapons.
• Howard County law prohibits smoking in public places. No smoking is allowed.
• Shoes must be worn.
• No pets.
• Everyone needs a ticket in the pavilion.
• Children under 2 are free on the lawn for most shows.
• All performances are rain or shine.
• Low-back lawn chairs are permitted on most shows.

Your analysis makes sense, but I would add:

a) shuttle service to and from the hotel.   that's worth something, given it's a fairly long hike, esp if you are tired or drinking

b) if you opted for pavilion seats, the seats you will get in this package are better than if you bought them directly.   If it's the pit, obviously no difference.

But i bet anyone can take the shuttle, no?

The main reason for me going with the package is that my work place wouldn't allow the cookies from Ticketfly and wanted to make sure I had some good Pavillion tix.

I think the hotel offers free shuttle service for all guests who are attending the concert.
