The 2008 shows were frequently bookended by Evil Urges/One Big Holiday. Any guesses/intel for the go-to opener/closer for 2010?
Id personally hope they mix up the order, but for the sake of this, I'll go Anytime opener, Lay Low closer
I'd like to hear a few more Mahgeetahs than they played last time round.
I Will Sing You Songs open and Steam Engine closer?
shit yo, I don't care what they open and close with, I'm so friggin excited to see them again!
How about a bit of reversal, One Big Holiday to open, Highly Suspicious to close?
You know I like it old school. How's about The Dark opener, Phone Went West closer.
I like old school too -- Twilight would be a kick-ass closer.
My guess is they stick with Evil Urges as the opener or maybe go back to Gideon. For the closer I would guess Touch Me I'm Going To Scream Pt.2
They'll probably mix things up a bit - maybe they'll open with the theme from Hawaii Five 0 one night, A-Team the next (with Patrick dressed as Mr. T)
And just so long as Jim is still up for hitting the high notes I'm pretty sure they'll go with the ol' Top Cat-into-Run Thru every night to finish...that was mindblowing when they played it in Japan!!!

Imagine everything they could do with that 2 hour segue :o

I would prefer a 3-hour segue...
And WIN for Soulshine.
At Dawn/One Big Holiday in Birmingham
Mahgeetah/Dancefloors in Nashville
Lay Low/Run Thru in Atlanta
And Steam Engine, in the middle somewhere, every night.
The Bear opener
Phone Went West Closer
i'm gonna not switch it up for the opener...i think one big holiday is flawless for an opener
for the closer, the most rockinest version of War Begun ever heard...twice
Heartbreakin' Man- Opener
Magheeta- Closer
I don't care what they open with as long as they don't close ;)

So maybe it would be appropriate if they opened with this:

Off The Record - Open
Touch Me Pt. II - Close
you'll see....
Charleston - Anytime/Mahgeetah
Raleigh - At Dawn/Phone Went West
Columbia - Where to Begin/Touch Me>Run Thru
I know it won't happen but I'll gladly take A Quick One put back into rotation, particularly as a closer.

that would be worth the trip down there

I think this will be it also.

That would be amazing.
Hearing everyone's ideas is really getting me fired up for Nashville!
Alright, Patrick, count it off...

Ahh setlist talk! my favorite!!
So the opener is a crapshoot, and changes from show to show. I'll make 5 guesses and bet I hit them all on the mini-tour: Anytime, Evil Urges, At Dawn, OBH, and Mahgeeta.
The closer is a much more interesting question. It is usually the same for an entire tour and even longer. Roughly speaking, it's been:
08/09: OBH
06/07: Anytime
05: Mahgeeta
04: Run Thru
03: Phone Went West
02: ? no idea (anyone?)
So, I think they'll pick a new one. Steam Engine has to be there some year, but not yet... my guess is Lay Low.
Open With These Three in a row- Mahgettah, Remnants, O is the one,
Close With THese Three in a row- Steam Engine, War Begun, I Think I'm Going To Hell,
or
Wordless, Highly, Gideon
Touch Me 1, Cobra, Touch Me 2, (and make it sound like one long song)
Wordless Chorus to open again in 2010.

They've done the Steam Engine closer where they left stage one at a time until only Patrick was left. I believe that was '03. 02 was also a year of Phone Went West.
Picture Of You/Honest Man. Fuck, that would be an amazing dream...

I like the idea of Lay Low as a closer, tons of jam room and it stays upbeat for the entire song. Where as Touch Me Pt 2 is a great first set closer because you know they are coming back to rock some more.
Opener: Rock and Roll
Closer: Steam Engine
One Big Holiday / Losin' Yo Head
QuoteOne Big Holiday / Losin' Yo Head
I'm not sure if they'd close with a Monsters of Folk tune, but I definitely expect one or two to crop up, along with Wonderful (The Way I Feel). What other MoF tunes would you expect in April and beyond? I'm thinking (possibly) Master's Voice, Right Place, LYH, maybe Magic Marker.
BTW, love the idea of opening with Rock and Roll. I think opening on a cover would be sweet. A new one each night! Hopefully, the boys in the band checked out our thread on MMJ covers for inspiration.
I really hope they don't play any MOF tunes. I still can't see the fascination with Losin Yo' Head. It sounds like a bad rip off of a Twisted Sister song that is horrible pop/rock. I feel like the same people that preach on these music forums about "good" or "real" music would be bashing this song had it not been made by MOF but some FM radio band.
But that is off topic now isn't it? My apologies.
If I had to pick one closer, it would be Lay Low as mentioned above.
"I really hope they don't play any MOF tunes. I still can't see the fascination with Losin Yo' Head. It sounds like a bad rip off of a Twisted Sister song that is horrible pop/rock. "
Huh?
I rather like LYH and most all of Monsters of Folk. I don't necessarily want MMJ to play MoF tunes on this tour. I got my MoF experience in Boston. Still, I wouldn't be surprised.
Some of the lyrics in LYH seem fitting for my trip down south for these shows. Party with strangers or stickin' with close friends. I'm not sure how it will feel, traveling by myself. Guess I'm kinda hopin' strangers become friends, with MMJ paving the way. And I"m definitely planning on losin' my head!
I guess I've never really considered it a MOF song. In my opinion, it sounds more like MMJ than anything else on MOF, so I've been daydreaming about hearing the boys shred it to pieces ever since MOF came out. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe I'm too optimistic, but I think it would fit great into the encore, if not the show closer.
With the Preservation Hall Band in tow I would expect a closer along the lines of Dancefloors or maybe Easy Morning Rebel. I'm also hoping to hear El Caporal, but I don't think that would make a good closer, not enough potential "epicness"...if that makes sense...somehow I think people will understand.

You'll be in good company.
I would love an IWSYS opener, maybe a phone went west closer?
I would actually like a Run Thru opener and a I'm Amazed closer with an extended jam..
Than maybe Strangulation in the encore 1 spot, and OBH in encore 2. That would work for me
Anytime actually makes a great closer. Although I like jrud's idea the best so far. Dancefloors! Hell yeah! Talk about sending you home wanting to keep the party going.
move on up opener with pre.jazz band. :D superfly with pre. jazz band closer.
Quotemove on up opener with pre.jazz band. :D superfly with pre. jazz band closer.
I can see something wild like that in New Orleans. I think Jazz Fest is the tours best chance to see a crazy setlist, being the Jazz Bands home turf.
What a yummy mouthwatering tease for the upcoming shows,Nashville in particular. 8-)
My guess is they'll hit the stage with "Aluminum Park" and exit via the "Bermuda Highway".
"Aluminum Park" kicked ass in Louisville at Waterfront Park a couple of fantastic Summers back.
honestly, as much fun as a cover is, I think I will prefer just allllll MMJ tunes... its been so long, and I just miss them!
Quotehonestly, as much fun as a cover is, I think I will prefer just allllll MMJ tunes... its been so long, and I just miss them!
I'm with you there. 100% All-Natural MMJ, please.
I'd like to see Phone Went West or War Begun as the closer. Takes me back to the old days. I think they might switch out Evil Urges from the opener and use it to open the encore, instead of Wordless as the encore opener. At Dawn or The Dark, or even Mahgeeta would be awesome to open with, but I think it'll be more along the lines of Wordless or OBH. I have a feeling the closer is going to be the same every night with the PHJB sitting in on it...so maybe Dancefloors?
Or, in a total pipe dream, how about "Don't Do It" with the PHJB sitting on as the opener ala The Band's Rock of Ages.

The first time I heard Losin Yo Head I thought "This should be a Jacket song". With all due respect to the other Monsters, I think Carl and Patrick would tear that song a new a**hole.
