It's Vandy's Rites of Spring that weekend, too.
In.
Tell me more about Rites of Spring Festival Alady. Is it all in one place? How soon will they announce the bands?
I'm no expert, but here's what (I think) I know: it's held on the Vanderbilt campus on the Alumni Lawn, it's BYOB, and I think it's around $50 for the weekend. Last year the Flaming Lips, T.I., N.E.R.D., Okkervil River, Q-Tip, Santigold, Grand Ole Party, Black Joe Lewis, Star Death & White Dwarfs, and K'Naan played, among others. I don't know when they'll announce this year's acts, but I'd guess it would be soonish.
HOLY. SHIT. I think I was in before, but now I'm definitely in! Nashville and Columbus at least!
The Jacket played Rites of Spring in '06 :)

That's what I'm hoping. After my ill fated attempt at sneaking off to the original Chicago dates last tour, I'm really not going to be allowed to travel to see any, not that I was allowed before. We didn't get a show last time so hopefully this time.

I have the week off during the Birmingham, Nashville, and Atlanta shows. I have a frequent-flyer ticket burning a hole in my pocket.
Where should I go? Any thoughts?
i'll be there...if i can get a ticket. gonna be tough finding a way to be at a ticketmaster outlet at 10am next friday. the boss probably doesn't care if i get to see MMJ or not.

I keep quoting myself. Will I go blind?
johnnYYac IS IN FOR NASHVILLE! HOTEL FOR 2 NIGHTS WITHIN WALKING DISTANCE OF MUNICIPAL AUDITORIUM! I'LL BE COMING FROM BIRMINGHAM AND HEADING FOR ATLANTA, TOO.
In the roll call posts for B'ham and Atlanta, I mentioned sharing rides or even the spare bed in my hotel rooms (except Atlanta). Kinda awkward since we only know each other via the forum. And the wife says I snore pretty bad.
Still, looking forward to three shows in four days (is this a dream?) and hope to meet some of you all in person. How should we do this? Secret handshake? Nametags?

would one of you write me a "ms. y can't come to work today...signed Epstein's mother" kind of letter?
the editor i work for told me today, "to think about having someone cover for me so i can go to the show". fucking awesome. [smiley=grin.gif]

Hey. I've decided to do another roll call. As of V-day, here's what I see. A lot of you are also in for B'ham. I've got a rental car with at least 3 seats, if you want a ride to N'ville. I'm heading to Atlanta from there, so I can't offer round trip.

UPDATE: Looking again, I did a double take. 2 General Admission Floor Tickets to Nashville for $65! Hell, I paid $50 for one, once I add up all the charges!

SECOND UPDATE: Looks like someone got 'em. Hope they found out here. Its great to see folks with tickets they can't use willing to put up at face value OR LESS! These scalpers piss me off. Hell, for the MMJ/Tom Petty show in August, there are already tickets available for many hundreds of dollars and they haven't even gone on sale officially yet. WTF?
my attendance at this show is tenuous at this point, but i'm going to keep my name on the roll as a kind of voodoo totem. (work schedule stuff)
Best of luck yvon! I'll try to work some voodoo magicks in your favor.
Anybody know a decent hotel that is relatively close to the venue? I am not familiar with Nashville at all & was wondering if anyone knows the area well enough to suggest a hotel. It doesn't have to be a top notch hotel or anything, but I definitely don't want to spend the night fighting off vermin :o Just looking for a decent place to crash after getting my face melted!!

Alright, Nashville hotel warning...
I was having second thoughts about a hotel I booked for two nights, since there's a day off between Nashville and Atlanta. It was pretty cheap and I started reading reviews. For a laugh and possibly some cringing, google Nashville Knights Inn.
Turns out Priceline won't let me cancel the reservation, so I'm out $95, but that's for two nights (yeah, you heard me right). Still, I decided it was worth it.
Now I'm going with a Comfort Inn about 1.5 miles from Municipal Auditorium. Much better deal, $80 per night. 4PM day-of-arrival cancellation policy, so I suppose I could check out the fleabag, see if there are any cockroaches or hookers, then decide how brave I feel.
Nah! If anyone here is brave enough and will sign a waiver (I can't decide if I'm serious about this), I'll let you have it.
Live and learn. I guess, since my airfare is "free" (frequent flyer miles), I can't complain. So now its like I got a roundtrip flight from NH to The South for around $95. See, I can always justify this shit, important as I convince my wife that its perfectly fine to let your husband vanish, leaving you with the kids (3 girls under 9) while Daddy goes on a 5 day "American Dad-style" following MMJ adventure... alone.
I can't wait. Someone start filling me in on what I should do with that extra day in Nashville. Has anyone been to Jack White's record store/studio? I'd love some recommendations for food, fun, and the music fan/tourist.
Peace.

Make sure that you check out the Beer Sellar for drinks and the Flying Saucer for drinks and food. If you have to choose between the two, go with the Flying Saucer, only if you don't mind being served beer by young ladies in plaid skirts, stockings, and tank tops that read "Beer Goddess". Both places have a large selection of draft and bottled beer.
I am not much on museums, but the Country Music Hall Of Fame is pretty interesting as well.

Well, of course!
Wait, ankles are down by your feet aren't they? Then maybe not... ::)
Do the Ryman tour and hit up Grimey's :)
Yep, you should definitely check out the Ryman. I've never been to Grimey's, but it looks like it could be time well spent.
Thanks for the tips. Keep 'em coming.
As I mentioned in another thread, I was curious about Jack White's studio/storefront in N'ville, Third Man. Wonder if one might find Carl, a N'ville native, hanging out there, where he helped out with pedal steel on Karen Elson's album (she's JW's wife). After all, we've all got a day off between the N'ville and Atlanta shows.
Forgive my ignorance, but how far to Graceland from N'ville? I imagine its an expensive tourist trap, but curious.
EDIT: Nevermind. Checked it out; 3.5 hours away. Sorry, Elvis!
I haven't been to Third Man yet but I've heard it's pretty cool - lots of rare-ish White Stripes stuff sitting around the store, like that White Stripes Holga they made a while back. A friend of mine frequents the place and has bumped into Jack there a few times.
5 Points in east Nashville has some cool spots, 3 Crow Bar, Red Door east. In west Nashville Losers, Red Door, Corner pub midtown. All of these are real close to downtown.
If you've never been to Nashville before you got to hit up the honky tonks downtown. The Stage, Roberts, Second Fiddle all good spots. Lots of tourists, but still a good time.
Jack's and Rippy's have good BBQ, they're on Broadway. The Copper Kettle is an awesome meat and three on 1st Ave north. Past Perfect is on 3rd or 4th, they have good food and a Foosball table upstairs. All of these are downtown.
Grimey's and the Basement, the Ryman tour, already been said, do it.
Hey fellow Nashvegas-bound peeps, hows about getting a meet-up organized before the show? I gotta eat, and drink, and I want to meet more of you guys! Flyguy mentioned The Flying Saucer or Beer Sellar...has this already been taken care of and I've missed it?
Also, anybody else staying at the Doubletree?

The Flying Saucer at Union Station would probably be the better choice. It's only 0.7 miles to the venue. Beer Sellar is more of a drinks only kind of joint in my opinion (maybe after the show?). I am staying at a nifty little boutique called Hotel Indigo that I stayed at a couple of years ago.
I'm staying two nights at the Comfort Inn on Demonbreun St. My first time in Nashville. I trust you locals to tell me where to go, before and after.
I mentioned this before. I originally reserved two nights at the Nashville Knights Inn, but it sounds very sketchy. I couldn't get a refund, so there's a room available to someone if they want it. I'm travelling alone and not quite as brave and adventurous at 42 as I was at 24. Its on Spring St. Goggle Google it if you're considering my offer. I won't ask you to pay me for the room (just under $100 for two nights), but you can't blame me if you catch a disease or wake up next to a crack whore.

Good luck. I have you and her added to roll call. Two weeks!

UPDATE:
2 weeks!!!
My friend, you are hemorraghing (sp?) money to make this trip happen! Bravo - you definitely are an early contender for MMJ Fan Of the Yr

I appreciate the sentiment, and "hemorrhaging" money might be a good characterization of my trip, but I'm still a newbie. This trip is meant to move me out of the minor leagues. I'm tired of savoring my one and only live MMJ experience (which you and I shared as strangers, I might add). I still think its a bargain and I'm saving a lot of money since I quit smoking last November, so that pays for the trip. I expect the entire 5 day/4 night/3 show trip to run under $1000. We'll see...

And to be clear, I'm not making fun at your expense. I must admit I can't help but chuckle when I keep seeing your posts about how you are taking losses left and right on your trip, but really - I meant it - BRAVO - you are going to have a blast and meet a bunch of cool people I bet.
QuoteHey fellow Nashvegas-bound peeps, hows about getting a meet-up organized before the show? I gotta eat, and drink, and I want to meet more of you guys! Flyguy mentioned The Flying Saucer or Beer Sellar...has this already been taken care of and I've missed it?
Also, anybody else staying at the Doubletree?
my foursome is staying there, a group of bald or balding 40-somethings with no desire to grow old.
would be nice to put some faces to some names, but since i have to work wednesday, looks like we'll be arriving wth little time to spare before the show. and we're heading out
early thursday to play golf on the way back home, so extra partying afterward isn't a wise move.
but if any of you happen to spot the 4 old dudes with at least one beer in each hand, don't hesitate to give a shout.

I hear ya on the losses. Things do add up and I couldn't stay in that fleabag shithole in Nashville. As far as the ticket upgrade, it hurts to pay so much and get such a low price on eBay for the other, but my regular priced ticket to MMJ in Boston was pretty much $100 all told and I could barely see the stage. So its all good. I keep forgetting how many on here are college students and how we are in a recession (or slowly coming out of it), and ticket prices are so ridiculous lately. I pulled out an old ticket stub from a Grateful Dead show I saw in 1987 (making "album art" for the recording I found online). They had Little Feat open for them and the ticket was $25. Even that seems high. And then all the fees, parking, etc. Uncool.

Understood. I just noted Ticketmaster is sold out of GA floor. Good luck!
really? Where did you read or find out about this?
I tried to get the floor yesterday and could not... >:(
Quotereally? Where did you read or find out about this?
I went to Ticketmaster.com, put in for 2 tickets, GA floor, best available and got nothing. I tried just 2 "best available" and got GA upper/no floor access. Anywhere will be great, though.
Does anyone have a better sense of the auditorium setup? I found great seating charts for the Alabama Theatre and Chastain Park Amphitheater, but the only seating charts for N'ville Municipal Auditorium are "eh".
I found tickets on this site: http://www.ticketseating.com/buy-my-morning-jacket-tickets-april-21-2010-1930-1297101/
I'm wondering the difference between GA-Floor ($60), Main Floor GA ($69), and General Admission ($74). My ticket says GA-FLR, Row G1, Seat 283. Isn't this still general admission on the floor? I am confused. :-?
Hope someone can explain this cuz mine say the same thing.
Municipal Auditorium is a relatively small place. I believe it's where the hockey team plays. As far as I can remember, the floor is GA standing and the upper is stadium-type (GA) seating all around (except behind the stage, which is at one end of the oval-if you will). When I've been there before GA was GA...up or down. But apparently, they will have a "gate keeper" to keep uppers from going to the lower. I hope that's not the case, but it appears that way. :-/

I'm wondering if the row and seat numbers are just a way to keep track of individual tickets, to avoid fake tickets, and to keep track of the numbers to keep it within capacity. If all the tickets said "general admission" with no other identifiers, I could see someone trying to make copies. Nowadays, with barcodes and such, its less likely an issue, but that just means the row and seat numbers on general admission tickets are a holdover from a bygone era. Just my theory. Would love to know the "real" reason, particularly if I'm right.

ONE WEEK!!!

I don't know the city well enough to make the call, but we should definitely meet up preshow! New thread, maybe?
I scanned all of this thread and came up with this idea. Pre show at Flying Saucer (by 4 or 5pm) and post show at Beer Sellar. Just a thought. Tell me if I'm being too pushy, I just like having a plan within which to fuck around. I did the same thing on the B'ham preshow thread.
Vote for this idea or propose another. For reference, you can reach me that day on my cell 603-568-6123.

I am meeting non-forum friends from Huntsville before the show. I will be at the Flying Saucer some time around 3:00 PM and will likely end up at Beer Sellar afterwards(If I can still walk).
I don't know the city at all, but the Flying Saucer seems to be the consensus, sounds good, and is less than a mile from the venue. Google maps says there are a few places closer, but I have no idea if they'd be good for us or not. I wish some Nashville peeps could speak up, and a new thread for this is probably called for.
I am not from Nashville, but I have been to these joints enough to vouch for them.

Well.. due to no great interest for the tickets.. I'm now going..
I will have ONE extra ticket though, which I would really like to sell. It is a GA Floor ticket. Let me know if anyone would like to buy it.
Thanks for the support!
PS.. Someone is taping this right?

Note, I never took you off the list, though I will remove +1. Don't feel bad. Many folks are going solo, but once you're here, you won't be alone. Folks are meeting up before hand at the Flying Saucer, I believe. If you check earlier posts here, I have a free hotel room for anyone who wants it, for two nights. Its just a sketchy sounding place and I cannot be held responsible for what happens- Nashville Knights Inn.

Another rare poster here (busy with the Wilco board). I met some of you last fall in Louisville at the post MOF party. I probably met more of you at the MSG NYE show, I was first in the GA line by quite awhile. Anyhow, wondering if anyone else from Louisville is interested in carpooling to Nashville, I could drive or ride, just like the idea of sharing the ride and sharing expenses. Hit me up, greg
Does anyone have 1 extra GA floor ticket for sale? I thought I wouldn't be able to make this show but now I can so I need 1 ticket.
Don't think I'll be making it y'all, but I'll be with you in spirit. I will most likely be at the Columbus, OH, show. Have fun!

Nice touch, Johnny!
I am in NEED of TWO floor tickets... does anybody have a couple extra tickets? I originally was supposed to be OUT OF TOWN for the next week, but then my work schedule changed and I ended up travelling TO NASHVILLE TODAY... I live in Knoxville, TN.
Please email me if you can sell two floor tickets.... there are still upper level tix available but I would LOVE to be on the floor. I'm staying in the Best Western Downtown which is 4 blocks from the Municipal Auditorium.
I can get you a discount on a hotel room here if you need it... or heck, there's an extra Queen bed in my room that will be unused... I'll throw in FREE lodging (and Valet parking!)
Or heck, if you just have one ticket... then let me know too. Maybe I can buy 1 ticket off of a couple different people.
I promise that I am not some creep. My name is James Trimble and I'm in a band called The Dirty Guv'nahs and we just recorded a new album at Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock (where MMJ recorded their version of "It Makes No Difference")... we just got our final mixes back and I've got to get a burned copy of our new CD on stage and in Jim's hands. MMJ is my absolute favorite band (outside of The Rolling Stones)
Sincerely,
jamestaylortrimble@gmail.com
Just plain excited.

HAha make that Wed night.. see I really can't wait!!! :D
I'm there, late. Wife has to teach until 9, but we'll be busting our way towards the front in time for Run Thru.
Its 5:01 in the PM here in Westville, Oklahoma. I'm drinking a brew and listening to the Bonnaroo '04 show. Just about to crash out so I can rise early and head to Nashville! I wanna know what songs you guys wanna hear! I'm pulling for Rollin' Back myself. Doesn't really matter. I'm bound for a spiritual experience either way.
