I'll bring about 90 people with me. Who else?
I'm hoping to make it.
"HOTLANTAAAAA"
ATL is one of three possible stops on this tour I can make. Any ideas on nearby hotels? Maybe I'll do Nashville and Atlanta. I'd love to meet some fellow MMJ heads from the forum.
Only a 4 hour drive between them. I could rent a car and offer space to folks going from Nashville to Kentucky, er, I mean Atlanta.
Fuck, I am psyched. Can anyone convince me to do B'ham and N'ville instead? Hell, maybe I'll just have to do all 3!
Do all 3....you only live once.
wow! Peeps are really chomping at the bit for some live MMJ! Usually roll call threads are started a week or two before the show. We almost already have a roll call thread for every date announced so far. Not that there's anything wrong with that...

Yeah, I agree. This will be MMJ show # 5 for me so I'm pretty stoked.
Count me down for my hometown! Now, to figure out how to get to the rest of 'em.
So thrilled! Where do we get our presale codes for Wednesday?
ill be there. got abut a five hour drive but ill be there. does anybody know anything about the venue?
Quoteill be there. got abut a five hour drive but ill be there. does anybody know anything about the venue?
You are gonna love it! One of the best places to see a show in Atlanta, especially if it doesn't rain. But I saw Wilco there once in the pouring rain, and they rocked extra hard through it a la MMJ at Bonnaroo.
Anyhow, it is obviously outdoors, and it holds just under 7000. But that always seemed high to me, as it feels more like 4000 and is very intimate for a larger venue. Cool beer and wine vendors, in a gorgeous area basically in the middle of a park. It's about one-third general admission standing on the "floor", then about 1000 in seats around that maybe, and then the rest is a nice lawn in the back. The sound could be better, but it's not as bad as a smaller club like the Tabernacle and better than many amphitheaters. If the mix is right, it'll sound damn good either way.

Quoting myself. Like a good showerhead and my right hand. :D
I AM IN FOR ATLANTA! I'VE GOT HOTEL 2.6 MILES FROM CHASTAIN PARK AND NEED TO CATCH A FLIGHT THE NEXT DAY FROM RALEIGH. AND THIS WILL BE MY THIRD SHOW IN A WEEK!
Sorry, I just fainted.
I will be traveling from B'ham to N'ville to Atlanta, with hotel at each spot (2 nights in N'ville) within walking distance of the venues. I'll probably rent a car unless someone can offer me a ride.
I'd offer a bed in B'ham and N'ville (rooms have 2 double beds, except in Atlanta), but understand we're all strangers except for our love of MMJ. Also, my wife says I snore something fierce. Now, I just need my tickets to the shows!
Knowshon and I will be there.
i'll be heading that way from clemson. CANT WAIT
I saw Ben Harper at Chastain some years back and I loved the area and the venue. Whenever I saw MMJ was there I knew I was gonna make the 6 hour drive once again.
I wonder how much tickets cost.
QuoteI wonder how much tickets cost.
From Ticketmaster website: http://www.ticketmaster.com/My-Morning-Jacket-tickets/artist/841284
US $33.00 - US $45.00
Got my tix.
Orchestra row D, Seats 95 and 97. Not sure if these are on the side or center but they are close enough that it shouldn't matter too much.
Good stuff!
BTW I signed on right as the sale went live and all the pit tix were already sold out... WOW.
Me too!
Got two tix in orchestra. I had row B but gave them up hoping to get better. Ended up with E. So does that mean the pit is sold out or are they still holding them? Anyone know? I'm going to try again Friday and hope that I can sell the two I just bought.
I am in row E as well (106-108). I know a couple of people who pulled pits though.
i'm in orch row E too. left "best available" checked and it handed me lawns. WTF??
I had the same thing happen to me cousin eddie. I am in the seats i described but at least two people on another message board pulled pits.
I got orchestra Row D. If your tix don't say ORCH LT or RT, then you are center.
I logged on immediately and chose Pit, but I was told no tickets were available or it was sold out.
I got 4 PIT tix, and 2 ORCH Row A....WOOT!! Will sell the ORCH's.
Hopefully MMJ will ignore the decibel ordinance and pay the fine for cranking it up. I'll chip in to pay the fine.
2 orchestra row A! couldn't get pit but i'm still pumped about my 1st show
got em. row J. rolling five deep too. can't wait. where shall we all inebriate beforehand?
I'll be at the Brick Store Pub prior to heading over to Chastain...I can't wait!
Orch D 76. Could be better, could be worse (such as row W in B'ham >:( )
I would have been on sooner, but I had no idea what the passwords were, then couldn't remember my Visa Verify password (too many gd passwords to memorize!)
See you in April!
Anyone know how the PIT works at Chastain? Is it GA? If not are the seats at an incline? I have row 19 PIT so pretty pumped.
Also for all those with ORCH seats, if your tickets are consecutively numbered (1,2,3,4) then you have center orchestra, if you have even numbers (2,4,6,8) you're on the right and if they are odd numbered (1,3,5,7) you're on the left.
Any PIT info is much appreciated!!!!
This is the best seating chart I could find.
http://www.chastainseries.com/pdfs/Chastain_LiveNationSeries_NoTables.pdf
Thanks for posting that seating chart, have been trying to find one that really told you where you were sitting.
Bad news: We are well off to the left
Good news: That puts us pretty damn close to the stage.
Just tried to get better seats on the regular sale and it came back row M, virtually exact same seats... no pit tix at all.
me too. looks like these things are going fast. it came back with row P for me.
i wouldn't be surprised if (more) pit tix were released later .. trying to sell the rest of the venue first.

I have the same bad news and same good news... either way, we'll have a f*n blast so bring that shit on! :)
I'll be there. I love Chastain as a venue but, to be honest, I have been avoiding it for a few years. They instituted a cut off time (11:00 I think) and also a decible max at this venue. It IS enforced. Thankfully, the crowd will know to keep it quiet and enjoy the show. This show will be their "no tables" set up so at least there will not be the Buckhead Betty Bunch sitting down front and talking throughout.
I saw YES at Chastain about 5-6 years ago and when Steve Howe did Mood For A Day, you honestly could not hear him over the crowd.
Sorry to be a little negative. I'm sure it will be fine. Also, April is a great month for a show at Chastain. The June-Sept shows can be really hot as the concrete acts like an oven.
I've been hearing stuff like this...who else has been to a show at this venue before? To the person who talked about the Wilco show, were you in the pit? We have our tickets already, just curious...
Chastain is a big park located in the middle of some very nice neighborhoods. There is a golf course, horse park, baseball fields etc. but because the ampitheatre is sort of along one edge you ultimately have houses almost directly across the street from the venue. If you do a satellite view on Google maps you'll see what I mean. That's why they are so strict about the sound, etc. as the band is practially playing in someone's backyard.
That said, it is a fairly intimate venue that's surrounded by trees, etc. and so long as we don't have a cold snap it should be fantastic, just won't be an epic, all nighter.

Now that the Rites of Spring lineup is out and looking pretty lackluster, I might be in for this one...

I know about all that, how it's adjacent to Buckhead, I'm just curious if anyone's ever sat in, say, row BB there, and how the sound was...

I had seats about that far back one year for Lyle Lovett and his Large Band and sound was fine. They don't get too many harder rock acts there though so its possible quieter songs will be fine but songs that are supposed to have more punch will be somewhat lacking.
As for that Wilco show, I was like 4th row up from the PIT in the seats on the side. I thought it still sounded great, but yeah, just not crazy loud. And I am one who likes it turned all the way up. But to me that's the only downside to the venue, and it's not a big one.
Alright alright, you have alleviated my worries somewhat. Must have faith in the Jacket... The venue does look really sweet otherwise.
My husband and I will be at the show. Orch Row D seats 6-12. Have a friend coming in town from NYC and more from Asheville. Don't know if Chastain will top the Tab or Fox shows, but damn sure looking forward to seeing the boys!
Look for the white boa :)
May hit the Brickstore pre-show for a few drinks as well.

Any thoughts on preshow gathering sites?

Um, here are some reasons to consider:

2. its My Morning Jacket live
3. its My Morning Jacket live
I luck out by having this whole week off and an understanding wife. The Atlanta show is on a Friday night. I'm not all that impressed with the venue, but I'd keep going back to the first three reasons above. I'm not sure what kind of tix are available, but they're gonna be back a ways. Does anyone have tickets to sweeten the deal for mlbrady89?

QuoteWhat are your concerns about the venue, JohnnYY?
Well, some have said there's a noise ordinance. I thought I read the show could only go so late. I'm not a fan of these outdoor pavillion venues with lawn, half under roof, cookie-cutter concert sites. I like old theaters, natural outdoor venues, stuff like that. Can't say exactly what prompted me to say what I said. Of the three shows I'm doing this go-round, the Atlanta show venue has me least excited, that's all. Set me straight.

I wish I could set you straight. I've never been so I'm just curious. There is some interesting venue choices on this tour. I get the feeling they're going to dive more into their back catalogue for some reason, which is a-ok with me. I'm 100% certain* we will be hearing The Bear in Atlanta. And really, is there a better song to be played at an open air venue? No.
*100% certain = wishful thinking.
Being from the great city formerly named Terminus and Marthasville, and having seen a few shows at Chastain, I must say that Chastain is not the big cookie cutter type like lakewood or verizon wireless ampitheater, its pretty small and unique and is built into a wooded hill, and if the weather is good it could be unbelievable. We should be able to hear them.

Fair enough. I trust the experts. Looking forward to it like nothing ever before. Hell, they could play on the back of a moving flatbed truck and I'd run along side for as long as my legs could carry me.

There is a noise ordinance and a cutoff time, but really those are the only two downers. And we know our boys will play at least a two hour show, and that's all you can really ask for on a regular tour stop. We also know they will play as loudly as they possibly can. Trust me - I've seen a few shows here, and if you are anywhere in the first 20 rows or so especially, it will be loud enough.
And as for the venue itself, I live in Atlanta and I am super pumped. This is the first time I've seen them on an
outdoor stage where I am excited about the venue specifically, so in a way I'm more pumped for this than I was for the Fox and the 'Nacle. Bonnaroo was fun b/c of the setlist and it's Bonnaroo, saw them at Rites of Spring on Vanderbilt's campus and that was a decent setup - Nashville and Louisville's river scenes were beautiful but they weren't permanent structures built specifically for an intimate show. But Chastain is a fantastic outdoor venue all around. Trust. It's definitely not a cookie-cutter type place. It's a beautiful old park and the venue is completely engulfed in tall pines. Plus it's only 6900, so it's just over a
third of what Lakewood holds.

Thanks for setting me straight. It looks really cool. I misread past posts and probably am getting confused with all the talk about MPP and the Comcast Center and all the other venues discussed lately.
Probably unnecessary at this point but Chastain is (IMO) the best outdoor venue in Atlanta, if not the best venue period (though I do have a softspot for Variety Playhouse as I've seen a couple great shows there). Very unique, not at all corporate and extremely intimate, especially once the sun goes down.
Should be interesting

So... what's the scoop with the pre-party? Ya'll wanna hit this up full force or what? Surely we can have a mini Jacket fest in ATL prior to Chastain, eh? Don't call me shirly... ;)
Anyone familiar with the area around Chastain. Maybe some cool restaurants or pubs close by?
chastain itself is a great place to pregame, its got a bunch of picnic areas with grills in the woods that people can drive up to right behind the ampitheater. and then buckhead is about a mile or 2 away, and depending on what your tastes are, its got it. local spots like 5 paces, peachtree tavern and such are popular. there is a 3 dollar cafe about a quarter mile from chastain as well.
and the restaurant horseradish grill literally abuts the ampitheater and the horse park next to it. its very good, fresh, southern cooking.
I almost forgot to mention....

i know someone who is looking for two. Where are the seats?
I also have 2 tickets - PIT Row 22 (In front of sound board from what I can tell) Seats 3 & 4. Face Value (+ postal insurance if requested).
$58.48 x 2 = $116.96.
and may possibly have 2 GA for Charleston and 2 PIT for Cary. :-(

Hey, LaurieBlue, sorry to hear you have tix to sell. There's a thread asking for Cary pit tix, FYI:
http://www.mymorningjacket.com/cgi-bin/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1271173645/0#1
Thank you. Yeah, I hate to do this but....well there's a variety of reasons, 2 of which are both of us being laid off and we have to budget our $$ elsewhere. I haven't made a final decision on Cary yet though since that's closest to us and we have a lot of friends going as well. Necessity may dictate though.
I just found this Chastain photo online too..

"Buckhead Betty Bunch" - hahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaa you totally called that one dude
True. Hope I didn't scare anyone off with my above comments. Most of the shows at Chastain are part of their summer series. They set up tables of 6 in the pit area and then book (the remnants) of bands like Journey, REO Speedwagon and the like. The pit and the stands become a social gathering, more than a show. The crowds for these tend to be pretty uncool. MMJ will not be like that. During most of these summer shows, they let you bring in coolers, which is cool. I do not think coolers will be allowed during this show, but trust me, they are very lax on the big purse, small backpack thing so don't be afraid to bring in a sixer or a bottle. Just keep it cool.
I recommend the Taco Mac at The Prado for preshow meal and beers. They have 100+ beers on tap and its just a couple miles from the venue. I also agree that the park itself is a good place to chill beforehand. If you get there early, park along the road that runs to the north of the amphitheater. There are some good picnic areas along there and it will be easy out after the show.
Oh, and if your seats are not in the pit or on the lawn (generally the stands) you will really like the amout of leg room and space to stand and get in/out. It is a fantastic venue, other than the aforementioned issue with sound. But I am sure it will be epic.

Nice! I worked for 5 Seasons for a couple of years and yes, it's a great spot. Not only is the beer selection spot on, but the food is absolutely incredible as well. I think we might head in this direction and post up at the bar for a minute...
Okay, the time has come for me to put up the one week banner for this, my third show for next week. I am bursting at the seams!

Any guesses what time MMJ will take the stage (factoring in the 11:00 Chastain "curfew")?

Good question...Ticketmaster says 8:00, which doesn't seem feasible, since there is an opening band. Assuming Preservation Hall JB gets 45 mins to 1 hr, that mean MMJ won't come on until at least 9:30, which doesn't leave much time w/ the 11:00 curfew. I need to pull my tix out of the fire safe and see what they say.
I have 2 PIT tickets for sale, i believe 18th row, center orch. Will sale for face value. If interested, let me know and we'll touch base. I live in Atlanta, so can meet some time this week.

Hey Faye! Check yo pm...
Does anyone know what the chances are that they could go past the curfew? I've read the rules about fining for going over decibel level and show length...does Chastain ever actually do this?
i'm there +1
unfortunately we will be sliding into town right about show time, so there won't be much time for hanging out, just rockin out
I'm in, and bringing a friend with me...
i'm flying down from NYC friday morning and hitting the show with bug & her husband .. i'm so0o0 excited .. good weather, great friends and i get to see the boys again. it'll be the 1st time since MSG (http://www.thejamgirlz.com/phorums/images/smiles/035.gif)
Sorry if this has already been asked, but does anyone have an idea when MMJ will take the stage? I don't care too much about seeing the opening act (would much rather use that time for tasty brews at the pub) and would prefer to get there just prior to MMJ Rock time.

My guess would be 8:45 but it's just a guess. I happen to really like New Orleans brass bands. Cool if that's just not your thing, but don't sell it short just based on the sound of it.
To the earlier poster regarding Chastain stop times, I have been to many shows there since the cut off and every show has stopped by 11:00. So I say MMJ takes the stage no later than 9 and plays about a 2 hour set.

Great info, thanks im2bob. I also enjoy New Orleans brass bands, but we are pressed for time and need to set aside some mandatory brew time. :)
I'm sure we'll get there by 8:30 or so to see the end of their set.
Thanks again.
Just checking in. Curious of tonight's setlist and what is to come.
Brooke, I can't wait to see you!
Is there some sort of meet-up going on? We may hit La Fonda for a Mojito and grub pre-show.
If anything look for the white boa. We'll be Orch Row D stage left :)
P.S. I would suggest getting in at start time 8ish and get the rest of your brewtime on inside. With the 11pm curfew, I'm sure there will be some mingling of musicians on stage. And who doesn't like horns?! :P
I too have been seen numerous shows at Chastain and very few acts have played past 11pm. Fingers crossed Yim keeps going. I mean he can't resist HOTLANTA!

exactly .. and the fact that tom said "We'll be collaborating with them during the live shows for sure." ;)
mojito's sound amazing, can't wait !!
Some good points fellas. I would hate to miss the collaboration.. :)
Looking forward to it. My first MMJ show!
Two tix for sale. Row C, stage left. Look like pretty sweet seats.
Need $100 and some jawbreakers. ;D
Just finishing packing for the trip down. Psyched for show, its been way too long.
I'm housin'!!!!
With a gang of 5.
Yip yip! Tomorrow :D
Looking for the fun nice, Atlanta crowd I know will represent.
Okay folks. Thursday night was a lonely one in Nashville. I needed the day to recover from Birmingham and Nashville, but I'll be ready for tomorrow. I'm also thinking of preshow.
I've scanned this thread and don't hear a solid preshow plan. In Birmingham, it was Speakeasy. In Nashville, it was Flying Saucer.
From this thread, here's what we've heard:
Brickstore Pub
5 Paces
Peachtree Tavern
3 Dollar Cafe
Horseradish Grill
Taco Mac at the Prado
5 Seasons Brewing Co.
Now in my younger days, I was all for a round of bar golf, but at middle age, one stop preshow plus some parking lot or park beer and some Omnichord diddling are what I have in mind.
Are most folks planning a pub nearby or tailgating in the parking lot or picnicing in the park itself? Also, there are four parking lots to choose from, though I imagine they're not too large.
Anyway, if fellow forum folks can come together preshow, I'd love to know where and join in. Call me tomorrow afternoon if you find the party: 603-568-6123. Otherwise, I'll find you.

P.S. I've met over 20 from the forum and would love to meet 20 more!
We're meeting up with our son, his girlfriend and her folks at Bangkok Thyme (Thai food/Sushi). Yes, its Meet the Parents night! GF's Mom is big fan, Dad - not so much. Kinda like us, in reverse. Many thanks to my ever-patient wifey.
Any advice on parking? Been a while since I've been to Chastain.
I cannot wait for the show tonight! I will be at the Brick Store Pub at 4:30 then heading over to tailgate around 5:30 or 6:00. Stop by the BSP if you are in the area!

FYI chastain is in buckhead, so you might want to stick to places in that area considering the drive across town in the atl on friday after work is not a pleasant one. brickstore, although one of my favs, is in decatur and about 25-30 minutes away. the venue is actually in a park/neighborhood so not any bars right there, but the buckhead ones like 5 paces aren't far. or you could also find a spot around the venue and tailgate, which might be the best bet to avoid getting stuck in traffic on the road into chastain, which can get backed up.
A friend of mine is throwing a tailgate party today starting at 4, in the RED LOT. There will be a keg, and good peeps. Come hang out!! Details here...

Here's a map of the parking lots....see you in Red....

Hate to burst your bubble, but no tailgating/drinking outside venue. No cameras, no smoking...Chastain is the lamest place possiblefor a rock show.
And for rollcall, me +3, know about 8 others going, too.
Okay, just got in at 4:45. Chastain's 4 miles from hotel. Heading to the parking lot soon. Looks like Red Lot is the place to be.
If you all are looking for a pre-game bar, I'd head to 5 Seasons.
Was there, good show, but the crowd wasn't really that into it. Seen the boys 4 times and this was the least rocking and intense. Most of the people only knew the new record stuff. Was pretty disappointed that MOF & Evil Urges made up a large portion of the list set. I do love Touch me pt 2, so that made up for it. Here's hopping to MMP being better with some more of the older stuff mixed in.
Great show, shitty crowd.
Not to insult anyone that was there, but are MMJ crowds always this uninterested? People were walking around, chatting the entire time. Someone was constantly walking in front of me the entire show.. If you looked out in the crowd, you could see the aisles were filled with people walking around to get another beer etc. or just standing around chatting.. Got VERY annoying after while.. I personally pay $45 to watch a Rock concert, not walk around and chat with my friends (I can do that at the local bar).. Am I in the minority??
Sucks because MMJ really played their hearts out. It had to be discouraging for them to see that.
I don't want to come off as negative here, but agree the crowd could have been a tad bit more interested. It happens. Our seats were great, just a litte too far back. It's nice to sit back and get the entire feel for the venue and view of the band, but missed being close up! Short show, but overall rocking. Atlanta was to be my only show this tour and now I'm thinking I need one more show. I'm satisfied but need more. what a tease last night. Where it begins was a treat and like the new arrangement for I'm Amazed.
:)

Yeah don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed the hell out of the show. They band sounded great and Yim was full of energy. My first MMJ show... First of many more to come. :)
I personally enjoyed the show...a lot! It was my first MMJ show and I thought it was pretty magical. Yeah, there were people talking and walking around with their beers but still MMJ rocked it. Just like I hoped they would :)
The show was great (my first MMJ show), but Chastain fucking sucks for this band. I was in the "lawn" with a few friends and in addition to the cop that kept strobing his flashlight in random people's faces while muttering to himself, there was the wiring that started sparking and popping, and the constant line of freshman fratboy retards pissing on the fence about 15 feet away from me. I finally managed to hit one of these assholes with an empty can, but he stumbled off and didn't seem to notice. I was sort of hoping he'd get in my face then fall off the ledge, or at least get kicked out, but it's probably for the best. All and all, great show, but not the best venue or crowd.
Crowd wasn't as into it as I had hoped either but have you ever had more room to dance? The aisles there are WIDE so I was jamming all night and didn't come home with bruises on my shins from smacking into the seat in front of me.
My friends and I were pretty damn into it, and we drank several beers (and eventually a whole bottle of wine). I also went and peed on the fence, but only after I saw that it sloped back down the other side, and my urine wouldn't flow toward any concertgoers.
The sound was fantastic, even though I got the sense that they may have wanted to play more. Not sure if the set list was really any shorter than the others from the tour, though. And no Dancefloors? I was bummed.
Also, I felt orange was a poor color choice for the glowstick shower. Green or pink would have been better, the orange ones are kinda dull.
