Where to begin, no. Unless they played super fast while I was peeing.  My heart broke a little tonight.  We will probably never see "our" morning jacket again. They are as humble and grateful as ever but the "atmosphere" is different.  Still a great show.  More later...

So I have to say that, for the wonder and joy of Birmingham and Nashville, and despite a curfew (they stopped playing at 10:59 PM), this was the best show of the week!  I loved the majesty of the Alabama Theatre, the people I've met, the pit in Nashville, seeing the Jacket for the 2nd and 3rd times, but the best show was my 4th, this week's third, Atlanta!

I rocked so hard I had my eyes closed and missed clock arms!  Dondante, Smokin', Lay Low were phenomenal!  The venue was cool, I met great people, and they were on fire!

And "Where to Begin"!!!!  Thank you!  The highlight of my week!  What an amazing thing, seeing a beautiful song for the first time live!  The rest of the setlists, from Bham to Atlanta, were so similar.  I prayed for Steam Engine, Bermuda Highway, Dancefloors, At Dawn, but this was fine!!!!

Thank you to everyone on this forum who found your way to me.  I am a lucky man, I know.  This week will fall in the top ten, after the birth of my three beautiful daughters (I miss you Katherine, Madeline, and Lauren) and my marriage to a very generous and loving woman (I love you Michele).

I'll probably cool down on my postings here, now that my trip is over.  I appreciate the chance to chime in and gear up!!  The folks from this forum are beautiful!  I couldn't have made it without you!

As I fly home tomorrow and look down at the South, a place I called home for 13 years, where I met my wife and started my family and career, I return to New Hampshire a grateful fella.  Thank you, Michele, for letting me do this!  I love you so much!

Girls, Daddy's home tomorrow and we'll give My Morning Jacket a rest so you can hear some White Stripes again.

Easy Way, aka Thomas, you are a fine man, a good friend.  You and lovely Ashli plus your whole group were so gracious for bringing me into the fold.  Seth, you gave me a kick ass start to a great three show tour.  Kurt, recover from these shows, get serious about school, and be cool.  ALady, Dylan, Meg, flyguy, CrispYY, Low Down, Tracy3000, and everyone else, I love what we have together- a common recognition that this here is one awesome motherfucking band!

That'll do for now.  Goodnight!

-johnnYYac

On the other hand, with the shorter setlist, no more Way That He Sings.

That made NO songs from Tennessee Fire or At Dawn.    Don't need to check the archive to make the statement that I bet that's the first time in the history of the band that that's happened   :'(

Yes...this made me very sad.  Fun show, but my first show where I wasn't at least 4 feet from the stage.  The band is growing up I guess...

Crowd may of been annoying but I have no complaints about the talent of the women that were in attendance.

Sundresses as far as the eye could see.  ;D

Seen the boys a few times and that show last night absolutely kicked ass!

Did anyone see the guy light the pine straw on fire during the end of the PHJB set?  I was asking a cop if they caught the guy and she insisted the fire was caused by the lights.  She refused to believe my story.

I was right next to that area.  It was caused by the light.  The guy was a staff person trying to put it out.

We had a clear view of the whole thing. Some guy went right next to the light fixture and did something to start the fire. Then he went running into the crowd below. After it started roaring, some kid went up there and poured his drink into it. That didn't put it out, and then staff people worked on it until they got a fire extinguisher.

I doubt the kid got caught.

Was near that fire as well. When they turned on those ground lights we noticed it started smoking and then poof, fire!

Thanks to those couple guys who tried to put it out before the extinguisher came because that could've gotten ugly quick.

But holy $hit! What a show last night!! Thanks to Tayor Caine for getting these shows on Archive in record time. Been listening to it all day getting chills. And I think I've developed a non-sexual man crush on Jim James.

Can't wait for next time!

I think he was saying that the atmosphere and concert style has changed with the band.  They are trying to grow and reach out to a more diverse, less educated musical crowd, and that the old timers like us won't be getting the shows we have come to expect.  Not necessarily a bad show, but nothing as stellar as say the Filmore series over New Years of 06 or other epic shows.  A lot of people were more into their next drink, texting, or talking than the actual show.

Yeah, I agree.  I went with some casual MMJ fans who had been to a few concerts with me in the past and they even noticed that the setlist wasn't as good and the "feel" of the show was just different.

MMJ still kicks major ass, and they are improving every day (I love Friends Again) but I guess us "old timers" are going to have to get used to the fact that MMJ is getting bigger and moving away from their older material.  It's kind of like having a kid who is getting older....

Ok.  So I'm not crazy.  I saw the guy doing something up there and then quickly jump down and run through the crowd as the fire started.

As for the cerfew, I was suprised they had a 8pm start and an opening band.  It could have been worse.  I saw Panic there one year and they could not do an encore due to the cerfew.

What was the instrument Jim James brought out for Smokin' from Shootin'?  (I think that was the song).  It was some kind of handheld keyboard-like thing.

Anyone know?

Exactly.  The crowds are just filled with so many different kinds of people there.  Jim has always had the crowd in his hand and that just didn't happen in Atlanta. For a few songs it happened but not like usual. No fault of the band, though. They were enjoying themselves. Tommy was a madman in the bass. Jim is about the most gracious person to walk the earth.

A couple other things.... The fire was started intentionally. We saw the guy do then run off.  Big ups to the guys who poured their $10 beers on it to help contain it.
Glow sticks weren't too bad. They were definitely were there but not as bad as it could have been. I counted 53 that my wife and I collected and kept out if the air.
Also, chode, laser harp? Greatest answer ever.

I have been waiting to hear this band live since someone turned me onto It Still Moves my freshman year of college.  It completely lived up to expectations, hands down one of the best concerts I've ever been to. Chastain is a great place to see a show if they have a no table set up.  I'm looking forward to when they come around again and may make the trek to Charleston if the mood strikes.  At any rate great show I dug the ecletic mix of music and look forward to what they come up with next!

I totally respect that some people were left wanting in Atlanta.  I just lucked out.  After Birmingham and Nashville, I had no expectations for the setlist, which freed my mind big time.  As for the crowd, I know there were the noobs spending more time looking at cell phone screens than the stage, but again I lucked out- surrounded by pure fans who knew the songs and danced with abandon.

Each of these first three shows had their charms and flaws, but Atlanta gave me the best feeling of the three.  Sure, the set was shorter, but Where to Begin made up for that.  No one tried to assassinate Jim with a glow stick this time; that was an improvement.

I think they usually play about 7-8 more songs. Would have preferred a longer set, but it was still a great show.

Strange that they started so late if they had an 11pm curfew. Being that Chastain is in the middle of this neighborhood, I wonder if they have any rules about when the music can start? Interesting.

I don't feel slighted.. great show.

back to the rain and gloom in NYC after a wonderful weekend in the South. i had a great time at the show  .. i absolutely loved it but was definitely left wanting more with the early curfew. the overall crowd was a bit of a bummer as there definitely seemed to be mostly casual fans / "oh it's nice outside let's go see this band i heard about" .. alot of talking and not paying the least bit of attention to the show. the group in front of us scarcely looked at the stage. i was with bug and we were dancing machines .. we got alot of "omg look at those crazy girls" kind of looks but hello people, it's a concert ... shake your ass!!

and while it was a gorgeous day out and i looove being outside, i definitely prefer seeing the boys inside .. better sound and all around vibe.

Quoteback to the rain and gloom in NYC after a wonderful weekend in the South. i had a great time at the show  .. i absolutely loved it but was definitely left wanting more with the early curfew. the overall crowd was a bit of a bummer as there definitely seemed to be mostly casual fans / "oh it's nice outside let's go see this band i heard about" .. alot of talking and not paying the least bit of attention to the show. the group in front of us scarcely looked at the stage. i was with bug and we were dancing machines .. we got alot of "omg look at those crazy girls" kind of looks but hello people, it's a concert ... shake your ass!!

and while it was a gorgeous day out and i looove being outside, i definitely prefer seeing the boys inside .. better sound and all around vibe.

How much of this is "curfew" and how much of that is "stagehand unions being off at 11" or whatever their bedtime is?

Without getting political about it, I have to say that when I was 18 I payed much less money for a lot more concerts that went way later than 11 pm. I also wore an onion on my belt and yelled at the clouds a lot.

I'm pretty sure the curfew at Chastain is strict because it is in the middle of a heavy residential area. Most concerts I go to, the opener comes out at 7, and the main act between 8 and 8:30 so they can play a 2.5 hour set and be out by 11pm. I was wondering why they didn't move the show start time up for this show?

There were some pretty swanky homes over there.  I imagine there is some kind of noise oridnance.  I have heard that very few bands have played past and paid the fine.  I was hoping this was going to be the case but I knew in the back of my mind that the fellas have too much class to blatantly disrepect the "rules".

Good question.  Plenty of shows have 7 pm start for the opener?!

There is a noise ordinance, and most Chastain shows do start a little earlier. There is also a noise level limit. Bands will pay a small fine if they exceed, which I suspect MMJ did. It's like $5k for a first offense.

They should play the new amphitheater in Alpharetta. It's in the middle of a commercial area, so no residential complaints. I was at a show last and the opening band went on at 8pm, headliner band played until midnight.

QuoteWas near that fire as well.

Wait, wait, wait. Back up. Non-sexual? What are you, gay or something?

Me and my blonde/redhead friends at the show. The full frontal of Jim is pure awesomeness.

QuoteWhat was the instrument Jim James brought out for Smokin' from Shootin'?  (I think that was the song).  It was some kind of handheld keyboard-like thing.

Anyone know?

Laser Harp

Sorry for the post purge on here, but I'm listening to the show right now and had to read the whole thread before I posted something (isn't that how it's supposed to work?) about how awesome Jim's "scatting" was on Touch Me Pt 1!  Does anyone else think that Jim scatting is the next logical step towards bliss?  Okay, maybe not bliss, but he's just furthered himself as THE badest ass on the planet.  Check it out when you get a chance.  As far as I know, he's never scatted before.
