@MyMorningJacket: beautiful Crescent city, city of dreams, city of hope, city of re-birth. Here is what we played. http://yfrog.com/5cul9tj
Carnival Time with Al Johnson.
tight. I love move on up! (anything curtis actually) ::)
The Ernie K Doe, Al Johnson and Move On Up covers were all spectacular and highlights of the show. Reviews on NOLA.com have all put MMJ way above the snoozer S & G going on across the Fairgrounds. Highly Suspicious should not be played w/ PHJB however. Great show, awesome weather, so happy to see the band back doing what they do.
Having said that...
Where
are
these
songs?
Steam Engine
The Bear
War Begun
Easy Morning Rebel
Just One Thing
I Will Sing You Songs
Run Thru (full)
They Ran
Nashville To Kentucky
Lowdown
Masterplan
Strangulation
Didn't expect to see any of these during a festival set and I love the songs that were played, it just seems like a lot of these songs died on the farm at Bonnaroo 2006. Know they're not a jam band per se, but they do have some hardcore fans that would love to see a little variance in the set lists. They do a helluva professional job putting together a near perfect performance night in and night out, just don't wanna see the act ever get stale. Probably a little early in the tour to start worrying/getting critical & I left today wanting more.

I think you should check the set list archive from Bonnaroo 2006 until present and you will find those songs (at least not all of them) aren't strangers to the set lists at all.
I really like Highly Suspicious with the horns...I think it really
jazzes it up. ;)
fantastic show... Yim was definitely loving the breeze that was gushing through the fairgrounds... Wish they would have mixed it up a bit more since I had been at Birmingham and Nashvegas it was definitely repetitive but still no complaints great show :D
They did an acoustic "Highly Suspicious" with PHJB last night. I don't think I stopped grinning the entire time.
I'm so thrilled they're back. They could have sung "Michael Row Your Boat Ashore" yesterday and I'd have been just as pleased. ;D
Yeah, but the point is, they have such a large catalog of music that they could at least mix the setlists and add some diversity. How Dancefloors is not part of their set this tour is beyond me.
It's the only reason to follow a tour. To catch songs that you're hoping to hear.
true i really expected some dancefloors
What's most strange to me about the setlists is the sudden drop-off of all of those songs. I agree with Erik26 that those songs listed have been regularly sprinkled in occasionally, for the most part.
With no new album to support, I would have expected the setlist to be more varied and more surprises of old chestnuts. Instead, its more reliant on the 2 new albums than ever.
I'd like to go find that quote from Carl someone posted here lately about the setlists - something about the setlists being some old songs, some new, etc.... I remember that quote being encouraging..... :P
Great show yesterday. The band really impressed folks here in NOLA. I heard a lady next to me say, "I've never seen these guys but they are REALLY good!". The PHJB and the Bonerama horns really added to the ending. The band really played the New Orleans tunes well, not slapped together covers but full on versions. And the Curtis tune at the end was perfect. A great Jazz Fest set!
I realize most of the songs listed have been played since 2006, maybe I should have mentioned Evelyn Is Not Real, It's About Twilight Now, The Dark and other songs that have gone all but missing since that show. Those are just my favorites that haven't been played in the four shows on this tour. I have seen most of the songs on that list since '06. They have such a vast catalog with very few bad songs. Just think those other ones need to get in the mix and every now in then throw in an Olde Sept Blues or Into The Woods to keep the things fresh. Just sayin.

If you really get down to it though they are doing what they've done for years for the most part setlist-wise.
To me they've always played sort of a Zeppelin-esk set on tour. Where it's basically the same rocking set that changes each tour. There's a definite structure and the setlist is built to supplement a specific mood for sure. These sets are perfect for this tour because a lot of these fans have never seen the band live before. That being said I don't think they're selling out their older fans because they are in fact throwing in a debut almost every show. Even a Carl song, which seems pretty ultra huge.
I guess if you're catching multiple shows it's probably a little sucky at times but then again the song selection this tour is pretty bodacious. it thumps, rips and rocks. In a way they're upping the value of Steam Engine, Run Thru (full version), War Begun, Cobra, Dancefloors, etc and all these other massive songs so when they do bust them out it's going to be intense. Also it seems like once a song is introduced to a tour it sticks around so it's also a cumulative thing. Staying solid as fuck and still having fun.
These are good sampler shows for new fans and heavy rockin shows for older ones. The only thing they need to do is shuffle the deck a little more and they'd be instantly more interesting. It's this internet and instant access to setlists that spoils us.
They age like a fine wine. It just takes time.
Did anyone see Jim with the PHJB on Sunday? Did he just come out for LA Fairytale and St. James Infirmary like expected? Or was their more Yim?

I was crouching outside of preservation hall peeping through the holes in the wooden doors that night, and even though every song was filtered through wood and glass it sounded tear-jerkingly beautiful. at the first hint of at dawn everybody in the street let out a collective squeak of excitement! Knot comes loose was by far my favorite of the night...
On a separate note, when Patrick and PHJB came outside after the show and second-lined down the street, there was some guy with a bigger than normal (and relatively professional looking) camera filming the whole thing who came out from the inside. Does anyone know if that night was filmed or maybe being released by PHJB??? I have my fingers crossed...

Heard (read) on Twitter:
(Chalkdust99)"Sat next to Danny Clinch (Phish, etc photog) last night @Preshall for #mymorningjacket. He was tight-lipped, but he had a crew of 4 filming. My guess is that they are putting out a DVD of the weekend's performances, but what do I know? #mymorningjacket #preshall"
:D
Danny Clinch... :o:D
Danny Clinch was definitely there and the guy behind me was filming.
so much to look forward to nowadays!! Thx for the insider info...
Clinch and his crew even stayed around for the second line -- and he was definitely directing them during that -- so I think we'll be seeing something. The question is: when? when? when?

I completely agree! I was so glad when I saw Bonerama sit in with them! I was almost taken back by the addition of the Bonerama horns!

Yeah, we definitely had a small, but very dedicated, constituency outside of Preservation Hall for the entire show. While I would have killed to be inside the place, we could definitely hear it well enough to make it more than worth it. Not even filthy panes of glass and solid wood shutters could hold back that voice..... plus we had a pretty good view over Patrick's shoulder through various holes and cracks in the wood.
And you're right on about the collective squeak, although I remember it as more of a "Fuck me, I can't believe they are playing At Dawn/an acoustic fucking Dondante/Knot Comes Loose and I'm somehow not in there" groan..... emitted simultaneously at the beginning of each of those 3 songs by all Jacket fans within earshot.
Their Jazzfest performance was great, but the show that night was definitely the highlight...... and that's saying a lot considering I wasn't even inside the venue. It was nice to be able to enjoy that with some fellow MMJ fans.
And as far as Danny Clinch is concerned, I don't know of any time frame, but this article here confirms that it is, indeed, for a documentary (3rd paragraph):
http://www.nola.com/jazzfest/index.ssf/2010/04/preservation_hall_gets_a_littl.html
Thank you so much for finding this link! Confirmation of the documentary is a much needed pick-me-up after seeing the setlist tonight from Charleston...and forgive me for the squeak reference, groan is much more accurate ;D
If you hear anything else about a release date, please share!
