Not only does this confirm that MMJ are playing live next year, but that Pearl Jam's doing at least one gig in the US, both of which give me some hope.  :o

Where were you?

JF runs from 11-7.  I've been to 20 of them and have never had a problem. In fact, I've seen only one attempt at a fight there, and it was last year at Bon Jovi. Two guys started going at it and a group of older women came over and ran them off. Hilarious.  ;D

editing to add that there are always a TON of aftershows every night, including the days in between weekends

Yep, 11 am until 7 pm. Trust me, you wouldn't be able to handle much more than that. There's so much to see and do after Fest, so don't worry about that at all.

No idea when they'll play, though I would guess Friday or Saturday.  I think they'll be on the Gentilly Stage (though we all know they are deserving of a spot on the Acura Stage).  :)

For those of you not familiar, you can't get up to the very front of either of those stages (or Congo Square Stage) without a VIP ticket...they've got them blocked with barricades. Just a heads up so there's no disappointment.

On the site it shows MMJ performing the first weekend with the very first artist on the list being TBA...anyone have a feeling this could be Phish.  I sure hope so...Phish & MMJ at the same festival in New Orleans no less.  Wow, I'm getting excited just typing about it.

Would love to see Trey on stage with the Jacket or Jim on stage with Phish.

Some of the smaller bands, kid's tent sets, and Indian sets are 30-45 mins.

Most of the sets are an hour, and the bigger names are an hour and a half-ish.  Panic might get a double slot of 3 hours.

Depending on who's running the stage, the closing act may play a song or two beyond the closing time.  Acura Stage, Congo Square, and Gentilly Stage (where I hope MMJ plays) sometimes go beyond the cut off.  Not by a whole lot, but maybe a song or two.

I think tix are on-sale already.  It does not sell out.  At the gate you will pay more.  From the site:

Adult ticket package: $40 per day x 3 tickets ($120)
(a limited number of ticket packages are available)
Includes three date-specific tickets, one for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Not sure when single day tickets will go on-sale -- but if you can, go for a full weekend.  :)

Hmmm, did you buy one of the special VIP packages?

In any case, you are free to roam to any stage at any time to see any act that you choose.   The also use big video screens at the big stages so that if you're really far back you can still watch.

There are VIP bleachers at the bigger stages which, IMO, are too far away.

I think the weekend packages did sell out last year, but I'm not positive. I seem to remember scrambling to get mine in February and then hearing they sold out.

Try to get whatever tix you're getting in advance. Those lines are icky.

Also, it was asked elsewhere, but I believe the TBA is Simon and Garfunkel.

I talked to Ben, the tuba player/creative director for the Preservation Hall Jazz Band tonight and he said that MMJ is playing on April 24th.  He also said they will be joining Preservation Hall on stage the next day.  Now he may have meant just Jim because that was how we got to talking about Jazzfest in the first place.  Either way, that's pretty awesome.  Almost, ALMOST makes me wish I still lived within a days drive of NOLA.

yeah, i got the krewe VIP tix. probably a ripoff, but i thought it might increase my chances of getting closer to the stage and apparently we wont have to wait in line for beer. I dont think i would be able to get up front with GA tix. either way, this just sounds too awesome to pass up.

now i am to the point of wondering what the set will be. will it be covers? new stuff?

hahaha....that is so true...money becomes no object and the distance means nothing..I have to agree with you on that.

the Krewe VIP seem to be the best option if you want to be up close, they cost like 550.00 per ticket

I'm wondering if i can pull off 500 for tix, 300 for a flight, and another 150.00 for a room... or just wait till they have a full o :on tour and follow them for two weeks

The Krewe tix will not get you that close to the stage. If you have to be right up front, you'll have to shell out for the Big Chief package.

I wouldn't say Krewe is a ripoff, because you do get bleacher seating with shade (essential shade, might I add) and other amenities, but you aren't that close to the stage.

You can get pretty close (but not on the rail) with regular GA tickets. I'll see if I can dig up a pic from last year's Wilco set as I was able to get pretty close without camping out at the stage all day.

I feels ya.  As much as I absolutely LOVE NoLa and have been looking for an excuse to go for a while and I thought THIS was it, we're probably not going after all.  Coachella is the weekend just before the first weekend of Jazzfest, and well, I can't afford to do both what with having a day job and all.  So.  Here's hoping they show at Coachella!!!  Although, if Coachella line up ends up sucking, then we're doing Bonarroo instead.  So many uncertainties!!!!!

I'm hoping and praying for even a limited tour. I'll go as far as I can drive without having to get a hotel. Just can't afford more than that. It leaves a lot of options for me, because all I need them to do is book ONE show within a couple hundred miles of NYC. I'll go as far as DC

Ok so since MMJ is the third act in the lineup for the 1st weekend is it posible they are going to headline?  In reality I can see them performing on the Acura stage second to last and if they were to close out a night I think it would be on Gentilly Stage.

Also I really do anticipate a late night show.  1 to 1 1/2 hours is just not enough and the gang knows this.  I could see a gig at the CAC which would be incredible but imagine a Tips late night show.  I know its a stretch but hey Wilco did a two night stand there not too long ago... Wishful Thinking...(pun intended)

can't wait for dates! :D
Title: Re: My Morning Jacket - New Orleans Jazzfest
Post by: Sassbox on Dec 20, 2009, 05:03 PM
No disrespect to The Jacket, you consider them fourth on the lineup?  I think any of these artists could close a stage first weekend: TBA, Lionel Richie, Anita Baker, Allman Brothers Band, The Black Crowes, The Levon Helm Band.

My guess is they'll close Gentilly on Saturday, but I would love, love, love to see them at Acura (hell, anywhere).

CAC...ugh. That said, I'll be there if there's an aftershow.

Title: Re: My Morning Jacket - New Orleans Jazzfest
Post by: NoVa_NoLa on Dec 22, 2009, 12:03 PM
If there could be a night show, I agree that it might have to be at the CAC.

That said, I've seen Franti, Greyboy, KDTU late at Tip's.  Would definitely enjoy MMJ at Tip's.   :D

With the State and the Saenger still in disrepair (though I think both have new owners), there aren't a lot of medium sized rooms to play.  While dreadful, the CAC is the right size.  Just gotta remember to bring a flashlight and hand sanitizer for the port-o-lets.

Hotel Deal Alert!

(maybe I should start a new thread somewhere for these)

A few friends have gotten the InterContinental on Priceline for the first weekend of Jazz Fest for $75.  Bid $75, 4-stars, Downtown and/or French Quarter and see what happens.

This is a pretty good deal for a 4-star hotel!

I spoke with a high ranking member of the Jazz Fest production team and he told me MMJ would close the Gentilly Stage on the first Saturday. I was concerned that the Allmans and MMJ might be playing at the same time but the Allmans close the Acura Stage on Sunday.

Yep, looks like news that Simon & Garfunkel are the TBA for first weekend leaked, and they'll be closing out Acura on Saturday. That puts MMJ closing Gentilly the same day. That's actually a pretty painful conflict for me.

Ugh...I'd actually like to hear S&G, too.  Never seen either of them live.  The last time Simon played the Fest, I opted for something else.

Also, on 1st Sunday, this looks lovely:

Still hoping for a night time MMJ show.

I love, love, love Paul Simon and I have never seen him live.  I have listened to his Concert in the Park at least a thousand times and hearing Graceland songs in New Orleans would be fantastic.

HOWEVER....I imagine myself waking up on Saturday after a long night of partying on Friday (Crowes Friday is what I like to call it), strolling down to Cafe Du Monde for a cup of hickory coffee, shaking off the fuzz, and soaking in some of the city.  Then head down to the festival, watch some more great music and start drinking again.  Just as I'm starting really feel good again as the sun starts sinking toward the horizon and you can really feel the energy in the air, it's time to make a choice.

Choice A - Two 68 year old dudes and a humongous crowd.

Choice B - The greatest rock and roll band to ever walk the earth, playing after the longest break in their history.

1 Year, 2 months and 18 days.

That's 448 days without the Jacket.  448 days of Jacket Energy stored up.  To be unleashed upon thousands of unsuspecting fans who made the RIGHT decision.

Sayonara my ass.

Sunset, New Orleans, My Morning Jacket.  It's really not hard when you think about it.

(You would think I was going to this wouldn't you?)

Post of the week  ;D ;)

I have seen Paul a bunch and saw him at Jazzfest a few years ago. Some of those shows were great. But Paul seems to be kind of just phoning it in these days and I have no interest in Garfunkel or this reunion.  If it was Paul again solo I would possibly split the time between stages but since it is Paul and Art I will be at MMJ the entire time.

We need a Jackethead line at the rail! Well, as close to the rail as those of us who don't buy the inner circle access passes can get, anyway.  ;D

I think I'll be at the Jacket for the whole set.

I would love to hear S&G, but I can almost  guarantee that all that I would hear is the jibber jabber of a lot of people too intoxicated to shut up and listen.

I left James Taylor last year for that reason (primarily).  Too many folks not there just to see/hear him and for whatever reason, mellow songs seem to invite loud conversation.

I fear that S&G would be the same way. So, I don't think I'll spend any time getting into or out of that crowd.

Now, that's one conflict down.  I wonder how bad the other 8 are going to be for that time slot???

late night is lookin like a no go... superfly posted their late night lineup a few weeks back... same old stuff... Gov Mule Greboy, Galactic, and Claypool.  Not that these are bad just dissapointing not to see a 3 1/2 - 4 hour late night Jacket blowout on the list.

I wouldn't say a night show is out of the realm of possibility yet. The CAC is still open and I think it would be the place they would play. I also wouldn't mind a Jim Solo show at Preservation Hall. Preservation hall has put on some of the night shows I have seen over the last few years.

The cubes (day and time schedule) are out.  As predicted, MMJ closing the Gentilly stage.  Hitting at 5:30 to close -- not bad we'll get close to a 2-hour festival set (maybe an hour and forty-five).

Simon and Garfunkel start at 5:15 on the big stage.  Could do both for sure, but I'll probably wind up at MMJ for the whole time.  Gonna have to miss my friend Kirk's band, too.

No night show that I've heard of so far....come on CC!  Give me some good news!  ;) :D ;D :)

:)

I try not to eat the same thing over and over again while I'm there, but these two are just too good:

Cochon de Lait Po-Boy
Pheasant, Quail & Andouille Gumbo

I have that gumbo almost everday and usually take the po-boy home at the end of the day if they haven't sold out.
Man, is it Jazz Fest yet?  I'm hungry!

I've decided, along with my friends that went this year, that we are going to do this festival annually.

Found this little vid.....

Does MMJ steal the show at every festival?  I'm thinking yes.

I am so happy that you were able to go and that you had such a wonderful time.  This event is truly addictive -- and I mean that in the best way.  Sass has been to twice as many as me, but this was my 12th.  Haven't missed one since my first...it's just too damn good to pass up.

BH!  See you there next year!

For what it's worth, the Big Chief in the video with the huge blue feather headdress is Monk Boudreaux.  He's a really, really sweet man.  Have known him since his days with the Wild Magnolia Mardi Gras Indians.  A few years ago, he was on display in the Grandstands, sewing his "suit" for the next Mardi Gras.  I think it was the year after Katrina.  He told me that everybody was worried about him; thought that he had drowned.  He looked up at me and said, I don't know why they thought that.  I just got in my fishing boat and got to where I needed to be.   :)  Apparently, Monk's been fishing since he was old enough to hold the fishing rod.

Oh, I also got to meet Patrick this year.  ;) :D  :)
