what song do you think they'll play?
Quotewhat song do you think they'll play?
hrmmm ... i'd maybe go with Circuital and then maybe a cover and/or oldie but goodie. when i went for the phish taping they did loving cup (as it was stones week) and then they also played divided sky which wasn't to air on that show .. rather it aired at a later date. i feel like they did 3 songs though, one that never did air and was rather just for the audience.
I was thinking for this or Letterman, the new style Nashville to Kentucky with the sax would be awesome. With the T5 coming up, I think digging back into their old catalog would be fun. Plus they have always done rockers. I'd like to see them show the world their softer side.
These are the past late night performances I show, am I missing anything? I thought for sure they did Gideon once without the Boston Pops.

FYI it's pretty easy to get tickets to these shows (band bench aside). they go on about how shows are booked a month in advanced but not entirely true. i've snagged last minute tickets for out of town guests on several occasions ... my mom is arriving today for a long weekend visit and i just now called and got tickets for her and i to go to a taping tomorrow :)
you can probably go ahead and call to inquire about regular tickets for the MMJ taping ---> (212) 664-3056 ... but maybe wait to see if you can get band bench tix first ;)
Just found out I won tickets to the band bench tickets! Pumped. Gotta talk to my boss about leaving early.

Awesome! Congrats ITM! :)
it's gonna be so amazing seeing them within arms reach up on stage. this is awesome. can't wait to see what they play.

Not sure if we'll definitely be able to get autographs. unless we know where to hang out when the band is coming or going to the studio. i've been once to the fallon tapings and on the band bench and the band came, played, and left quickly.
any strategies? thinking about bringing a vinyl record case for a signature if there's a possibility
my friend won the band bench seats and is taking me. so fired up!
Yea I got the call letting me know that I won 2 tix for this band bench thing also, but due to the fact that I will leaving work early every day next week for T5 I cant exactly leave early tomorrow also. I'm not sure if its even possible for me to give these away or transfer them to anyone somehow, so if anyone wants them and knows a little bit more about this whole thing, let me know. Wouldnt wanna see them go to waste if someone on here could use them, ya dig?
OK so I love that they went with a song for Letterman that they have never done on late night before. That makes me think that tonight they will either go all the way back to Tenn Fire, or maybe do Wonderful. I just hope they continue the trend of original late night performances.

War Begun is a good possibility. I'll throw two more out there. Shortened versions of Smokin or Laylow. I'm hoping with Jim's relationship with the Roots they will get a bigger timeslot than the average band.

I know they allow standbys to join in. When I saw the Black Keys there were some people who didn't show up so others go to be on the band bench for free.
even if your not on the band bench they may have standby tickets for the regular audience which is great too

I have not seen that yet. Great video!
i would not be on that bench, i watch the people on there, they always look silly, the camera's on them for the entire performance. and i think they do get a lot of stand ins because half the people look and act like they don't know the bands.

Okay, I'm going to be that guy and say that with their whole catalog to choose from, I wasn't thrilled with the song choice. Wordless is not aging well for me and I would rather see a song with Jim on guitar where they bring the RAWK. Also didn't think the Roots added much to enhance the song and the fact that Jim does that stage slide every time during that song at that point of the song is getting cheesy.
Quotethe fact that Jim does that stage slide every time during that song at that point of the song is getting cheesy.
;D .. not that i necessarily agree b/c i love me a power slide, that said .. this morning i did wonder to myself "how many power slides will i see this month!?"
seeing 7 shows this month puts one in the spot of ... "i am so lucky to see all of this and i wouldn't dream of complaining, they can do no wrong" VS. "i am seeing them 7 times this month, i hope for alot of variety". but honestly .. we are gonna get variety out the ASSSSSS @ T5 .. no repeats and no complaints here. besides, i do love worldless chorus or pretty much any song that has JJ carrying on like an animal (http://www.thejamgirlz.com/phorums/images/smiles/106.gif)

I hear you to some extent, but think about this- what would you play? With the constraints:
* can't be over 4 mins or so
* can't be too mellow / acoustic
The first one knocks out most of the rockers and the second knocks out many of the classics (at dawn, bermuda highway)- so I think there really isn't a huge amount to choose from. Gideon is a great one but that's one they already played.

Totally understand your point. Matter of fact, my biggest disappointment is I was hoping for a bigger time slot on Fallon. That is not the band's fault. Comes down to a matter of personal preference I guess. I would have taken a more acoustic classic like "At Dawn" over Wordless. Note to the band, write some good rockin' short songs for the next album. ;)

So I just took myself up on my challenge and looked through the track listings. Given 4 minutes- Lowdown? But since they played TWTHS on Letterman, I'm guessing they wanted to showcase another album. Golden? Highly Suspicious? Where to Begin would have been a nice call.
I agree that the best solution would have been to get a 6-7 minute time allotment - that opens up all the possibilities.
I liked the song choice. Though it isn't one of my favorites.
my only concern is the fact that he was flat on all the verses. JJ sounded fine yesterday so maybe it was just an off performance.
Overall i liked it though

I have not yet seen the show, I DVR'd it. Having said that, I think some folks may be missing the point of these late night appearances. They are not for fans, especially die hard fans. They are marketing for exposure. What you have witnessed repeatedly and may justifiably think is cheesy, has never been seen by 90% of the audience. It might be just enough to get that first time observer interested in listening to more of MMJ.

Thank you Rincon. I was JUST about to post the same exact thing.
Yes you may have heard Wordless Chorus too many times and it's not aging well and Yes, you may think the slide from Jim James is getting cheesy. But you have to realize not everyone is as much of a fanatic as us and seeing him do the slide or hearing this new, accessible song is something that could hook a person who isn't familiar with the band.
They put on the amazing and stunning performances with the songs and covers you want to hear in the live concerts. Late night talk show appearances are meant to attract new viewers.
Do I wish they played Dondante and ripped the place up for 10 minutes and stuff? F Yeah!
Am I upset that they chose Wordless Chorus for Jimmy Fallon? Not in the least. I'm just glad that they are seemingly taking over New York for the week and are becoming so big that they get to do mini-concerts at the Letterman show and are invited to all these appearances. It could be worse, and they could be ignored by these places

I understand it's not for the diehards. However, if I'm watching them for the first time the power slide probably still comes off as forced and over the top for me. Also, if I'm into rock music and watching them for the first time, I'm not sure what I think of the off key howling either. I just don't think Wordless Chorus is a very good representation of the band for a first timer.

Best case song for exposure is simply "One Big Holiday". That is not really indicitive of the MMJ sound. I have been a fan for less than 6 months, but I know what inspired me. Wordless Chorus is an Iconic MMJ song. One of maybe 6 songs to expose someone to MMJ if you only had one song to pick.

If you listen closely, you can hear JJ say "for you" when he's handing it to Jimmy...so we will have to wait and see.
i was wondering the same thing - did he give it for keeps? hearing jim say "for you" & also fallon's reaction made me think so. he looked shocked & stoked & a bit giddy.
seeing that made me a tiny bit sad (end of an era sort of thing) but mostly really happy. just another example of our boys' kindness & generosity.
QuoteFinally got a chance to watch. Didn't see Fiddle or Brooke though.
I love it that Jimmy gets such a kick out of saying "Yim Yames everybody, Yim Yames!" ...thought it was a mellow but great performance.
I don't know how you missed me ;D I'm right behind Bo
