Title: MMJ @ Portland, ME 10/15 Roll Call and Countdown
Post by: johnnYYac on Jul 28, 2010, 10:11 AM
Just went to this morning's presale and got my ticket.  Looks like a GA show, so I guess there's no need to stress out, but the venue seating chart suggests reserved seating up front.  I wonder if they're making this completely GA.  Anyone with insight?

Countdown To MMJ @ Portland, ME October 15, 2010 (http://www.7is7.com/otto/countdown.html?year=2010&month=10&date=15&hrs=19&ts=12&min=30&sec=0&tz=local&lang=en&show=dhms&mode=r&cdir=down&bgcolor=%23CCFFFF&fgcolor=%23000000&title=Countdown%20To%20MMJ%20@%20Portland%2C%20ME%20October%2015%2C%202010)

only 79 days and 9 hours to go!

Roll Call!

Also going and will be our first MMJ show. We're pumped. My wedding gift to my husband and I.

Am I silly to think I might have my record signed?

I thought having Jim sign my Omnichord at Newport was a pipe dream, then... voila!  A lot of folks got to rub elbows with Jim this past week and the guys appear generally accessible.  I guess it depends on the venue.  Hanging out after the show near the buses sometimes works, though even with a backstage pass (which I got AFTER the show in Birmingham), I missed them by a few minutes.

So, updated roll call:

I'll be looking at hotels soon.  I'll post what I find.  Its always nice when you can find a place close to the venue.

That sounds like a great idea, I am not familiar with the area so a hotel somewhere's close would be great. thanks

I'll be coming in from Boston for the show.

The show is indeed 100% GA.

For folks looking for hotels closeby, the Eastland Park Hotel is just down the street from the State Theatre.

La Quinta Inn & Suites, $139, 1.62 miles from State Theater, so-so reviews

Eastland Park Hotel, $210, about 1/10 mile from State Theater (0.34 driving) - this might be worth it, especially if someone wanted to split it.

That's all I got so far.

I'm going with friends.  We always stay at the Eastland altough the rates are usually cheaper but it is a great hotel.  Bar at the top floor and big rooms..and last time we literally heard them soundchecking from our hotel room.

I just booked the Eastland Park Hotel.  If you go to their website: http://www.eastlandparkhotel.com/ , input the date and look for the tab that says "Select a Room Inclusive Package", then choose "Advance Purchase Rate". You'll get a good discount ($178.49 vs. $210) but the reservation cannot be cancelled,so be warned.

Walking distance, on same street as the State Theater, is LESS THAN 1/10 MILE (about 330 feet, no less)!!!

Add me to the list. Coming down from New Brunswick, Canada with a crew of friends. About a six hour drive. The Eastland sounds nice I think I'll try for it. Anybody think they'll announce an opener or do you think it will be an exclusively MMJ show? Let's keep this thread goin!

Hey guys i've been looking on the internet for pictures of the state theatre but no luck. do you think they haven't realeased pictures of the new layout since it's not yet re-opened? all i found were pictures of old seating charts from before they closed down. which makes me wonder. we're sure that this will be a full on general admission show?

I really hope they use this show as a dress rehearsal for the T5 shows.  It would make sense for them to play the songs they have not played live in awhile...

I was just wondering the same thing, possibly at the same time you posted.  I have to imagine its permanent seating but GA.  Not sure how that works, so I hope I can make it there early.  If anyone else has any insight, please post.

I can tell you about what it used to be like...it was seats up in the balcony/mezzanine and some in the back of th floor and then GA on the floor up front...which I loved.  It was a great setup...really easy to move around or grab a seat if you wanted.  Not sure about now because they have reduced the capacity but I imagine it is still GA on the floor.

Sweet!  Sounds ideal.  I've been camping out in front of Jim for past shows, so I'm thinking of trying to get up front dead center or towards Carl for this show.  Really looking forward to this and getting my wife to her second show, so she better understands her husband's obsession.

Time to discuss pre-show?  I'm coming from the Concord, NH area as soon as I can after work.  I fear we won't get to Portland until 5pm at the earliest and should check in to the hotel next door.  Any locals aware of a good watering hole nearby or in the Eastland Park Hotel lobby?

i was seriously debating on making the trek up for this show, but there's no way i could scam outta work to make the drive up from nj.

hope you guys get an awesome show!  i'll be lookin for reviews & then we can compare notes on this one & the ramble on the 16th.  i think we might get some real gems being that these shows are right before the start of T5...

There are some great bars in Portland.  There is one bar right next to the state theatre...Norm's that was a pretty popular spot last time I saw Wilco there.

www.normsbarandgrill.com

also $3 Dewey's has a ton of local beers on tap...and then there is Gritty's and Bull Feeneys.

Looks like lots of good choices nearby.  I'd like to pick one for the "official" forum member pre-show meet and drink.  Maybe something like 5-6pm.  Possible after-show, too.

Here's the list.

Norm's- I'm liking the proximity; want to stay close
$3 Dewey's
Brian Boru
Gritty McDuff's

I'm convinced!  Unless we hear from others against the plan, let's have all forum members attending this show convene upon Norm's at the appointed hour, say 5pm, for a toast to the return of MMJ and the State Theater!  Then, we head en masse to take control of the rail!

I was just checking the roll call to this here show.  Yikes!  Has T5 and the Ramble forced Portland to the back burner?  Where are all the New England fans?  This could turn out to be a very intimate affair, with only about 1500 capacity, not sold out, and very little forum representation.  Its a Friday night, too.  Hmmmmmmmmmmm.

Portland is a strange place like that.  Shows usually don't sell out even in a small venue like this for MMJ.  I saw them there once after Z came out and I think there was maybe 200 people at the show tops...and the night before in Boston it was completely sold out.  I don't mind, makes it easier for us to get up front.  I'm sure they will still put on a rocking show.

Most excellent!  I finally caved and put in for a half-day at work so me and the wife can get to P'land with time to spare.  After we check in, maybe stroll around the immediate area, we'll head to Norms- I'm guessing on or after 4pm.

Hey folks!

New to posting on the forum (been here for tabs aplenty).  The show sold out before thought to get tix, but another newbie posted tix for sale and the sale came off without a hitch.  Love the trust and community here!

Love the State Theater as a venue too!  Before they closed for renovation, it had an old theater character (like the Orpheum), but the best part is that they had all the seats pulled out of the pit and most of the orchestra. There were Seats in the balcony, and in the back of the orch if you wanted a rest, but 75% of the main floor was open for roaming, with stepped levels so us short folks could grab a rail halfway back and see over the head of all you vertically gifted folks.  There was a bar in the back of the orch as well.   Stone Coast brewery beer on tap (try the 420IPA if it's still on)!

So these facebook pix looks like more of the same - maybe a few more seats in the back of the orchestra, but the front is all open.

Can't f'ing wait!!  ...bringing a couple mmj virgins, if you want to add us to the list.

Peace all!

I was debating qualifying the statement, figured someone would correct me, but it is the return of MMJ to the stage without the benefit formal video coverage.  And, since I'm not going to Letterman or Jimmy Fallon, they don't count! ;)

Hey all - have been a fan since my first show in 2004 at the Space Gallery in Portland, been to many shows since, but would love to see them again in Portland before I move to Minnesota next month. Jim at Newport was outstanding, but I'd love to see all of the boys together again! Can't make NYC.

Am hoping to score an extra ticket for the re-opening of the State! If anyone has an extra, I would be grateful. You can post in this thread and I'll be sure to get back right away,

For those of you hitting Portland for the first time, enjoy it. It is a great city...

Yes, it is a great city!  Despite the cruise ships, tour buses and foreigners in Maine these days.  Gonna be a wet one (very much like BOA)  but at least we will be high and dry in the State.  Might head in for the sound check in the afternoon, I will report whateva I hear.  Look for an "MMJ" sign overhead on I95 on the way up around exit 25.

I'm so freakin excited. This is my third show. Living in Toronto and happened to stumble on MMJ in Bonnaroo 2008 where I went down to see other bands. They blew everyone away. Immediately booked tickets to MSG NY 2009 which was again awesome. The live music experience I've been looking for my entire adult life.

I'm originally from Fredericton NB Canada so I booked a trip home to see mom and am renting a car to go see my favorite band in the world at the State Theatre! This venue (and what used to be call Great Woods in Mansfield Mass) is where we went to see shows when I was in College. Last one I saw there had to be in 2003 or 2004. Govt Mule I think.

Until this show I couldn't even listen to MMJ because I thought I was going to miss the whole tour this year and it depressed me to listen knowing that. \

Now that it is right around the corner I couldn't be more exited. Driving to Portland early Friday morning and staying in one of the airport hotels (days inn).

Can't wait. Count me in on the meet up before the show!!! I'm sooo excited!

overthetop +1 (i.e. Greg and Haley).

So happy for all who are going to be there tonight.  We will be in NYC soon enough!

Hanover NH, where Dartmouth is located, is probably 3 hours to Portland.  Add that to where your conference is.

Well, I feel a bit foolish with three posts in a row, but this one doesn't need its own thread.

I was outside admiring the clear, star filled skies, when I heard "Hoot Hoot Hoot" in the woods.  Moments later, a massive owl flew out of the trees, across my front yard, through the beam of the outdoor flood lights, and directly overhead.  Its wingspan must've been 4 feet!  I think it was Jim and the boys, headed to Portland after completing the taping of the Jimmy Fallon show.  I was gonna hop on for a ride, but I'm a big guy and didn't want to hurt it.  Amazing, beautiful, prophetic? :D

Yac, thats amazing cause the owls were going off last night at my house here in Maine too!  They were eerie and calming at the same time.

Why is it hurricanes like MMJ?  This will be our second show in a deluge, Boston was a torrential downpour.  At least we will be high and dry in the State!

I will definitely try. Norms is a great place for food and suds and a great meeting spot. The issue might be timing. Am working a full day here in the Boston suburbs and then fighting traffic north. I want to try to get up close too, so I want to be in by 6:30 ish? How hard do you think it will be to get up close?

Anyway, I would love to raise a glass with y'all at Norms and will certainly try my best!

Going home to shower, then picking my girlfriend up in Boston around 4 and heading to Portland. mmj @ State Theatre!!! Back to Mass to meet my girlfriend's family for the first time Saturday then working Sunday morning then vacation in NYC! Seeing ISM, Z, & EU! Cannot fucking wait!! I'm excited for mmj, my girlfriend is excited for museums haha. Holy Jesus it's finally here.

For those that don't know, as a Portlander, I can tell you this is special. This is basically our most beloved venue, shut down for a few years because those who owned wouldn't make the necessary renovations. We have been waiting for the re-open of this place and MMJ was the perfect choice. Hopefully they get wind of how much it means to the locals to kick this place off in style. Still can't believe they chose MMJ. I feel like they did it just for me! Can't freaking wait for tonight.

what was the talk of the new song?   didn't see it on the setlist.   Did it end up being Butch Cassidy?

yep. that's what i was thinking it was after I saw the full setlist. John sent me another text this morning saying that the one he thought was new was Butch Cassidy. He also said he met all 5 of them at his hotel this morning...lucky bastard

You should see the pics he's sending! Oi.
Great setlist!! Wow.

Ridiculous show...amazing night..Hung out with the whole band for like 2 hours.   Talked to Patrick for a good 20 minutes..nicest guy in the world.  Jim literally cheers me as he was walking out of the bar at closing, told him i'd see him at Levon's.  He was so excited for it..pretty surreal.

That's pretty sweet for John, and that setlist is off the hook...some pretty good rare ones.

what a great show and an amazing, intimate venue. It helps when you are able to walk in when the doors open and get your spot leaning up against the stage (Carl side). Was able to see Carl's setlist song-by-song before the show opened and wished I hadn't but knew we were all in for an epic night.

My highlights:
-The James Brown slide across the carpeted stage by Jim that tore his pants during Wordless
-Chills (was listening to it on the ride up and surprised they played it)
-Evelyn
- Circuital (never heard it before)
- Carried Away - great Carl song
- Smokin'->Run Thru - great segue
- Steam Engine

Overall probably my favorite show, but being that close to the boys is definitely influencing my decision.

The MMJ/State poster they gave away when walking out was a nice touch as well.

Enjoy NYC and the T5 shows everyone!

Okay.  Where to begin?

Got to Norm's and met up with Erin (monkeyboy a.k.a. AXG) and his friend, Matt, whom I'd met at Essex Jct. VT.  Great guys.  Doors opened at 6:30 but show started late (8pm; ended 10:30).  You've seen the setilist.  Sorry for my "new song" alert.  I don't have enough listens of Tennessee Fire to recognize a 2010 version of Butch Cassidy.  Got that straightened out this morning when I ran into Bo at Starbucks!

I lost my wife for the second half of the show.  She enjoyed the balcony while I remained 2-3 back from the rail.  Met Lauren and her husband.  She's on the forum but I forget her screen name (EDIT: jahmazed- poster of the setlist! let's try imamazed, hmm?).  She came up to me and asked, "are you the guy with the Omnichords?"  Yep.

Lots of TTF gems and just great energy in their performance.  Of course, I pretty much always say that my most recent show was the best show I've seen, but I think I mean it for this one.  The setlist speaks for itself.

Jim muffed the lyrics on Steam Engine twice (rare and he covered it very well), tore his pants at the knee during his Wordless power slide (goddamn those carpeted stages!), but was ever the showman.

There was a second poster sold at the show, only 35 available (what I heard).  They were sold out, so I'm stuck with the one I ordered pre-show and 4 copies of an 11 x 17 version given out after the show.  One of 'em has markings on it now, though, so I'm not sure what to do with it...
;)

Y'see, I let Michele sleep in this morning and went across the street to Starbucks.  I turned to leave and saw Bo in line.  We talked for maybe 10 minutes.  Some gems include some interest in a solo instrumental album someday, clarifying that it was Butch Cassidy, not some new song (oops!), and the challenges for next week, as they DO NOT EXPECT TO REPEAT ANY SONG DURING THE ENTIRE T5 RUN!  Those of you going for the full run are in for a treat even more special given that nugget of info.  He mentioned that Chills challenged him last night.

Got back to the hotel to hear that Lauren ran into Carl in the hotel lobby.  I checked on the wife, then headed back down to find the boys getting ready to go.  I love that Ryan Pickett (I think it was him; soundboard god) says, "Hey, John!" like we're old buddies, then as I'm shaking hands with Carl, he says, "I'm Carl."  Like I don't know who he is!  Jim and Tommy were pretty quiet, though I did talk with Tommy about his cool wife, Linda.  Reminded Jim we'd met in Newport and that he'd signed my OM-84; not sure he remembered.  Still, gracious as hell.

I spoke with them for about 10 minutes and gave Carl a card with my website on it, so the boys can check out my Omnichord covers of their music.  They've received all submitted questions from Jason @ The Steam Engine, so they'll decide which 5 to answer (though I got Patrick thinking early about the role of his long hair in performing).  They loved last night, drove off in their two minivans to the Ramble, and left me with a great memory, some interesting insight into their musical plans, and the conclusion, already drawn, that they are just really nice guys.

Nice Yac! Yeah, that setlist looks great with all the TTF-centric tunes that havent been played since Stonehenge it seems. Im hoping now that theyve been practicing their entire catalog, that setlists will begin to look more like this and theyll vary it up more after T5. Probably wishful thinking though.

That posters pretty sweet but it sucks that your kids scribbled on it already.

You didnt ask them if theyre going to record & release the T5 shows by chance, did ya?

I should also mention, on the way home, I'm grabbed some frames for my posters at Michaels.  They've got a sale; buy one, get one for 1 cent.  Don't go to the Concord, NH store, though.  I bought all 8 of their basic black aluminum 18 x 24 frames!  All told, 8 standard poster frames and 2 of the 11 x 17's for under $100!

Awesome story John. So glad you had an awesome time and got to spend a little time with the band. Your texts kept me entertained all night. One of the many reasons I love this band and all the people associated with it on here is the fact that everyone I have met have been such wonderful people. They could have easily acted like they were in a hurry and jumped on the bus. Nope, not our boys...can't wait to meet all you folks next week.

Thanks, Trish.  Y'know, this morning transformed my feelings toward this band.  I realized it tonight, watching the Letterman performance of The Way That He Sings.  I had these guys elevated to a certain celebrity status, even after meeting Jim in Newport.  Of course, he was still dressed to perform, having just left the stage moments before.

Watching the same guys on the Letterman show that I hung out with and chatted with this morning, my perception of them is more grounded.  They're just regular guys with a great talent for music, together and apart.  I have great esteem and admiration for both their music and their human-ness (I invented a word!).  To watch Bo behind the keyboards, when just this morning we were ordering coffee at Starbucks and shooting the breeze was just a real pleasure.

Patrick is a bear and a riot, Carl is shy and Tommy is very cool and weird.  And Bo Koster is one of the nicest guys I've ever met.  Jim was aloof but polite.  Probably wondering who this middle-aged stalker is that keeps showing up in front of him.  Fuck, its that johnnYYac dude again!

I can concur w/Jules, being another first-timer, great show, great  venue, and they burned the place down like they said they would.

Tons of tunes I've either never heard before, or more than once, but by the end of the show they definitely had me dragged in and grooving.

The show was REALLY LOUD, forcing me after about a half hour from the floor up to the balcony to be able to really absorb what they were playing.

Got a lot of comments on the way out, that I looked just like the drummer.   I totally agree, and it was quite surreal to see my doppelganger wailing on the drums all night.

He's certainly a better drummer than I, and head-bangs like I haven't been able to since the 80's.

What a show! What an experience! I stepped away from my husband and friends to join JohnYY and others up front. Highlights for me included Dondante, Parts I and II live (anyone who has the fortune to be next to me at a stoplight can tell you this is something I have lived out in a fantasy many times) and hearing Carl's new stuff which I promptly returned home and downloaded. Other highlights included meeting fans as enthusiastic as myself. It was wonderful to turn around and shout lyrics such as "Boy you better learn to express yourseeeeeeeeeelf!" into each others' faces (sorry I didn't get your name but you rocked).

However, I will not deny that getting ALL 5 ORIGINAL SIGNATURES on my EU copy is something I will truly value forever. This will be the crown jewel of my record collection and I was just absolutely thrilled.

Meeting the guys was cool too. They were cordial but reserved. I was most surprised by Bo, who I always assumed was rather surly, based solely on the basis that he doesn't smile in photos, but in fact presented himself as just so kind and warm. After getting Carl, Tom and Bo earlier in the morning, the same group I had extricated myself from the night previous was leaving for brunch. My hopes for getting all five signatures was dwindling, until I turned around saw Yim coming one way and Patrick the other. At this moment I lost all self control. I am only mildly embarrassed to say that I let loose a muted squeal/jump up and down/ambush hug combo on Yim. Despite seemingly being half awake took it well. Then I hugged and gushed to Patrick a bit about how his drum solo rocked my world. Then I went to brunch.

BEST SHOW EVER!!!

Wow! What an incredible show! I had an amazing time with incredible music and truly special folks!  It all kicked off by hooking up with Jahmazed and making the 40 min drive to the show where we met up with Johnny at Norm's.  We had a great time getting to know him and his wife and hearing the stories!  Thanks for the table as it saved us a bunch of time buddy!  Thanks for the shout out too JohnnY, but its Aaron (not Erin) for the record, you should know Teach!  No worries :)

I hobbled (still in the aircast from the Essex show) to the show with Jahmazed and his brother-in-law only to find no ship poster!  They had a poster but not the one and they stank from ink  [smiley=thumbdown.gif].  Side story: I went to the State theatre open house today to get the real deal, glad I did for 20 bucks!  The State Theatre has been wonderfully renovated and I was appreciative after having paint chips fall on my head at shows before.  We walked right up to the rail next to other forum peeps and Johnny+.  We stayed there the whole show and it was worth the effort, broken foot and all.  The setlist was a complete surprise with never having heard Chills or Butch Cassidy.  The Wordless kick-off was ridiculous and other highlights for me were Heartbreakin', They Ran, Evelyn, a great Magheeta, Don, Steam and finally P-DOUBLE-DUB!  I couldn't believe what I was hearing!  I think I actually cried  :D

The only downer was the nazi security  >:(.  They jumped on a guy near us before he even lit the joint.  On the way out, this little one bumped me off the rail (i was just hoping for a drumstick for christsake) so I bumped him back, tempers flared and I almost got jumped so I walked away  >:(.  This show was only second to RCMH for me but I think what we are about to see will top it all!!!!  Bring on T5!!

See you all Thursday!  I can't afford the whole deal unfortunately.

Y'know, I'm kicking myself, but I could not conjure up an alternative spelling for Erin.  Sorry, Aaron.  I even mailed you some stickers not that long ago.  And I thought Lauren's screen name is Jahmazed, so now Matt (it is Matt, right?) is probably annoyed with me.  Really great connecting with you two at Norm's, at the rail, on your way to the parking garage, etc.  Sorry I stepped on your toes.

No worries at all Johnny, just wanted to get it right from the start!  Thanks again for the stickers, we never talked about them at dinner, bummer.  Matt was psyched to meet you again as well.  I could recognize you anywhere now, NYC should be a piece of cake on Sat., we will have to hook up before in the parking garage!  I am trying desperately to shed this cast before NYC.  It was hard walking in it Friday but its also a safe cocoon against drunk footsteppers.  Doing extra PT while at home the next couple of days to strengthen, I will need it!

Can't wait for a tape of this show!!!  Plus we took some many good pics, maybe too many.  Not sure what to do with them all.  Nosehairs and all!!

WHAT. A. SHOW.

If I could have made it to any of the T5 shows (which I can't) it would have been TFF so I was so happy they played a bunch of tunes from that on Friday.  They Ran had an incredible outro which some wailing falsetto.  I've never been much of a Butch Cassidy fan, but this live version made me appreciate it so much more (the sounds Tommy was getting out of his bass were incredible).  I was really hoping for a Dondante and it was great to hear this song after a few shows without it.

The encore was a thing of perfection for me, but hell the whole show was perfect!  Phone Went West is a great song to "end" the show on before a rippin' One Big Holiday.  I was right in front of Carl and got blasted with confetti during OBH, a great touch.

There was a point during the encore when I realized how wonderful my life was as I stood holding my woman watching my favorite band in the world play the best setlist I've ever seen. :)

LONG LIVE THE JACKET

I really miss PWW.   Until Fri night they hadn't played it since 2008, and for a while it had gotten a bit overplayed IMO, but after a long absence I'm REALLY jonesin' for it tomorrow night.

This show was epic!!! Me, my brother, and my cousin drove up from Boston and got into Portland around 3. Poked around some places in the theater district, including grabbing some lunch at Norm's. Then we started pregaming at the Downtown Lounge, which is right across from the State Theatre. As we're slugging down pitchers, who else but Two-Tone Tommy strolls by the window and into the restaurant next door. We finally worked up the courage to go introduce ourselves and he was really cool. We didn't wanna make a huge scene in the restaurant so we kept it somewhat brief, but it was definitely a highlight getting to meet one of the guys. Then we polished off some more drinks at Norm's before heading into the venue. This theater was awesome! It was classical and looked great, there were bars in the back and definitely a smokey tinge to the air. Got right in the front row, center stage. The show itself was absolutely incredible. This was my fourth show and by far the best. After being third row in Holyoke, we didn't think it could be topped, but this blew it out of the water. Tons of energy, amazing setlist. Highlights for me were Dondante, Steam Engine, Phone Went West, and all the stuff off Tennessee Fire. Because we were so close, we had tons of interaction with the band and Tommy definitely remembered us. At times I'd be headbanging and pounding the stage with one arm, only to look up and realize Jim is standing over me jamming out, expertly maneuvering his feet around my other arm which lay outstretched on the stage. By the time it was over, I didn't know which way was up, I had my mind completely blown. I doubt I'll ever be able to top this experience, but I'm certainly going to try. Can't wait to see them again in the future!
