Title: (a)Live & Wet
Post by: danz on Jan 17, 2010, 07:40 PM
Someone recently mentioned that MMJ has the power to control the weather.  So, let's reminisce about the times we saw them in increment conditions and loved it.  I'll start: Greek Theatre, Berkeley CA, Sept 21st, 2008 - the fog rolled in so thick it was like cool steam room in the wild; angelic.

Festival Pier, Philly, Sept 5th 2008.  Just as the encores get going, it starts to rain.  Best moment was during TMIGTS Pt 2 with the rain coming down and fireworks over the Delaware River.  Perfect end to a great show.  And then of course there was Jim's "LET IT RAIN, LET IT RAIN!!!"

Bonnaroo 2008...late night epic 4-hour show after Metallica's set in the rain...it got rather cold, but MMJ was on fire!

I almost went to that one.

Anyway, I've only seen them in perfect weather, so I will (not so) humbly bow out

For some reason, I don't remember the rain during the set in Philly...I only remember it raining afterwards, and only because I got all the way to the parking lot and forgot to pick up my poster.  Grr.

But Bonnaroo...that rain I remember. It shorted the circuits on a hat I was wearing, and yet I didn't care.  :D

The remnants of a hurricane were coming up the East Coast during the Philly show, with swirling winds blowing smoke around the stage all night.  During the last couple of songs, a few big drops started to fall, just enough to add a bit more ambiance to an incredible show.

I suppose everyone knows how they brought the rain with Steam Engine at the Return to Thunderdome show '04.  When I saw them at Telluride opening for Dylan they stopped the rain with Steam Engine.

Yes yes yes, that show was so friggin good! I remember wanting the rain so bad... it wasn't pouring but let loose some big ol drops.  The fireworks were epic, though it was hard to tear my eyes away from the stage.  I loved that show

Except for me having to move about 4 times till I actually found an area where they were actually there to listen to the music, it was a near perfect show!!

The day after Philly was Boston (9-6-08) and we were hot and muggy from the tail end of a hurricane/tropical storm.  The rain and wind were whipping.  Jim kept acknowledging the "spirit of Boston" to weather the storm.  The weather got worse as the night went on, but my buzz got better, so I didn't notice  :D  and we were all mostly under the tent of the Pavillion.  Great first (and only :-[ ) MMJ show!

Some real assholes at that show... makes me sad to think about, so I just remember the boys rocking the hell out.

The crowd up front (I was about 4 or 5 people back from where Jim was) at Philly was great, similar to where I was at MSG on NYE where it was also GA.  At RCMH and DC I was also up front but it was reserved seating and the crowd was not as fervently into the show.
The Philly show ranks with the best rock concerts I have ever seen, perhaps the best, and I have seen a lot over 4 decades.
Hopefully the boys will be out and about in 2010 to get my 5th off to a good start!

Yes, that was a good show.   Opening with Mahgeeta, Anytime, Off the Record was brilliant.   Weather was fierce.

The night also sticks in my head as the time I most in my life regret driving.   Should not have been in a car after a night of partying.   I say that not as macho bragging but real regret.   I thank my lucky stars I found my way home.   Rain was coming down so hard I could hardly see the Mass Pike.   Designated Drivers in '10 !!

Amen, brother mahg33ta.  I came down from New Hampshire, so the wife and I had a hotel room less than a block away from the Pavillion.  I did the same for the MoF show and The Dead in Worcester.  Its expensive as hell, but so is DWI.  Next time MMJ come to Boston, we'll have to chip in on a penthouse suite and limo.

BTW, do you have the (only?) Boston recording?  It was on Internet Archive soon after the show, but seems to have disappeared.  Its not great quality, but I listen to it constantly.  I made reference recently to where Bo K rips down the keyboard at the climax in Lay Low, thinking it was on most recordings, but now realize it was memory of Boston.   Anyway, let me know if you want it and I'll post a link to the Tapings section.

P.S. WTF Patriots?
