Hey guys, I haven't been on here in awhile so I am not sure if this is being covered in another thread. My apologies if so...(and please direct me to that thread). And I wasn't sure if this should go in the show section or off-topic, but oh well, here goes::):
I am trying to get some ideas for some daytime activities during the T5 run. I will be in Brooklyn for a whole week and while I come to NYC often for work, I hardly ever have so much time to explore the city. I am definitely going to hit up the Museum of Art and Design, MOMA and probably the Met as well. But I am looking for some idears of some awesome things to do during the day. And not just your typical tourist attractions, I have been to the Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, etc many times before. So, what do you have planned?
If I was going, my tourist excursions would be food related. Seriosly. I would hunt down the Dessert Truck as well as the Belgian Waffle one I say on Throwdown with Bobby Flay. I would go to Tony Bourdaine's old place and relish in the love the city has for food from a cart, which we do not have here. I'd be a boring, but VERY happy, food tourist.
Good food is definitely on the list, but I think food cart nirvana may just be in Portland ;)
For those who have not been, I would suggest The High Line:
http://www.thehighline.org/
It is really cool, I love this installation (http://www.thehighline.org/about/public-art/vitiello) and there is a Stumptown coffee cart there [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
go to momofuku noodle bar (http://www.momofuku.com/noodle-bar/) for lunch. if you don't do that .. at least go to momofuku milk bar (http://www.momofuku.com/milk-bar/) for pork buns & crack pie (or cereal milk soft serve, or a compost cookie)
visit the brooklyn bridge park (http://www.brooklynbridgeparknyc.org/) and also walk across the brooklyn bridge. amazing views of downtown manhattan! o0o0oh .. while your there, have lunch @ grimaldi's (http://www.grimaldis.com/2/Index.htm). some of my favorite pizza .. doooo it!!
if your a big beer lover, there are some excellent bars to check out. hit up the blind tiger (http://www.blindtigeralehouse.com/) for a boozy lunch after some sight seeing. their food is pretty great too.
aaaand one last food spot .. the meatball shop (http://www.themeatballshop.com/), the new it place in the lower east side. shouldn't be too busy during week days. delicious balls!

Thanks Br00ke! Being pescatarian, I will have to miss out on the meatballs. However, Momofuku Milk Bar is right up my alley! And no, I haven't been to the Museum of Natural History! Good suggestion! And I am totally going to walk the Brooklyn Bridge! Thanks [smiley=vrolijk_26.gif]

So no terrain bases animal proteins?
Just curious, what's the Central Park alcohol tolerance? I'd like to drink some nice craft beer or a nice bottle of red in the Park during the day but I don't want to get ticketed either. Anyone ever have issues there?
i've had my vibram 5 finger shoes for a few weeks now so running has been my thing. i plan on loading up my ipod with a playlist and going for a run on most of the mornings.. and after that just walk around and experience nyc. anyone down for a running partner hit me up. i'm not a strong runner but running through an urban area like NYC sounds perfect
Two Words: Central Park
Good thread! Central Park is mostly what I envision, finding some random heads playin music or frisbee..... or musical frisbee(?) or somethin.......cafes and restaurants and art and all the things I didn't have time to do my last couple times in the neighborhood.... WHOA maybe I should bring my paints and work on a painting in/of Central Park... geez I guess I oughta start thinkin on these things a bit more... christ I'm leaving next week already!!! :o :o :o Won't roll into the city til Monday morning though most likely....
Once upon a time, in New York Cityyyyyyy :P

Did someone say FRISBEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeee?
:o I think I heard it too!
Friiiiiiisssszzzzzz
.......beeeeeeeeeeeee33333eee
It's kind of a must!
as far as food places go. i just went to these places last weekend.
City Bakery - pretzel croissant and their oatmeal cookies
3 West 18th Street
Pulino's - their pizza is GOOOOOD
82 bowery, New York, NY
Levain Bakery - chocolate chip walnut cookies
167 W 74th St, NYC, NY
while i'm up there i plan on hitting motorino for pizza. maybe hit shopsins, sugar sweet sunshine for some cupcakes or the milk bar.
Nice thread. Thanks for the recommendations and keep em coming! :)
So hungry...so little time. Been looking for cheap eats somewhat near the venue and been scouring blogs and whatnot.
http://nymag.com/restaurants/cheapeats/2010/67146/
http://newyork.timeout.com/articles/restaurants-bars/9142/best-cheap-eats-in-new-york-city-everything-under-10 - by neighborhood helps
Quoteand if you haven't been before .. check out the museum of natural history. dinosaurs are cool yo!!!
i agree..or THE MET...it'll take you a few hours to get through everything but i think a cool walk is the west side of central park, you'll go by strawberry fields and the dakota bld (where Lennon was shot) and just keep walking you'll hit the Nat'l Hist Museum.
then jump on one of those rickshaws and have someone bike you to the other side (they'll even take the bike down madison ave) and it'll let you off at the MET.
I think you should come to Hoboken for a few hours, it's right across the water, 10 min bus ride or 12 min train ride. We have more bars per square foot than any city in the country, the view of Manhattan is the best you'll ever see (World Trade Center Side), hometown of Frank Sinatra and baseball (although thsi is heavily disputed), plus it's just a really cool place to see where the ships used to come in. ..oh and plus i live there.
I want to go to the Whitney
http://whitney.org/
and the NYC Tenement Museum
http://www.tenement.org/
and H&H Bagels (thankfully we're staying very close to one)
http://www.hhbagels.com/
and my friend from Long Island made me promise to go to Umberto's in New Hyde Park, so I'll be taking the train out there for lunch one day ;D
http://www.originalumbertos.com/locations.php
and Saturday afternoon at Brooklyn Brewery, of course!
http://www.brooklynbrewery.com/index.php/landing/
I kind of want to check out the New Museum:
http://www.newmuseum.org/
Anyone been before?
Wanna find this Korean burrito truck if they're up and running...

Hey wizzard...ALady and I plan to hit up a few museums. Please come with!
MoMa just opened an Abstract Expressionist exhibition:
http://www.moma.org/visit/calendar/exhibitions/1098
They have a fantastic modern collection, especially if you want to see well-known things like The Starry Night, Warhol's Soup Cans, and Picasso out the wazoo. Just my 2 cents. :)
ALady....Whitney is one I've never been to, so we should put that at the top of the list. :) And the Brooklyn Brewery!
Nom...
P.S. Penny Lane I would love to go over to Hoboken.
My sister in law is an art history girl too, and she said the Whitney is her favorite. I've never been to any (for shame!) so I'm excited no matter which ones we hit up!
one of my favorites is the neue gallerie (http://www.neuegalerie.org/) .. but with it being smaller and more maybe more spendy, not a bang for your buck kind of stop. great stuff though .. esp. if you like otto dix, gustav klimt and bauhaus type stuff :)
QuoteP.S. Penny Lane I would love to go over to Hoboken.
Sweet, Ky! You're my first victim. I mean guest.
I think BH said he'd be up for it, too.
No arsty fartsy museums there but we have booze and waterfront and the Cake Boss.

Damn, I would love that! And yes, I have been to the MOMA, many times. I love it so much! Have you been to the Museum of Art and Design? It used to be called the Museum of Arts and Crafts (or something along those lines) and was once across the street from the MOMA. I love it, their exhibits are usually off the hook! After NYE at MSG me and the hubs went and saw this cool exhibit of amazing things made from recycled goods. So not your typical recycled art either. This was my favorite piece:
http://collections.madmuseum.org/code/emuseum.asp?emu_action=searchrequest&moduleid=1&profile=objects¤trecord=1&style=single&rawsearch=id/,/is/,/5924/,/false/,/true

But I am game for anything!
I'm definitely in for some fun activities with you folks.....i'm not sure what my schedule is gonna be (lots of family and friends to see in the nyc area) but I for sure want to spend some extracurricular time with the forum board peeps

i imagine there are some record collectors out there...the weekend of Oct 22-24 is the annual WFMU record and CD fair!
http://www.wfmu.org/recfair/
Oh man...it's too much!
A friend is keeping me up to date on some CMJ day parties...happy to pass that info along if anyone's interested.
I'm starting to get goosebumps thinking about all this!
this afternoon i mapped out a bunch of routes:
--nyc lodgings -> levain bakery
--nyc lodgings -> city bakery
--levain bakery-> t5
--nyc lodgings -> t5
--nyc lodgings -> wfmu record fair
visited both those bakeries a couple years ago: both great spots! city bakery also has hot breakfast and salads at lunch.
may also brave the crowds and head to rockafeller center and the nbc store for some 30 Rock swag. (who dat ninja?)
we need an MMJ sign for the today show
I gotta stop looking at this thread. This is making me even saderer.

i'm an WFMU fan & subscriber. i might take an afternoon and pop over to jersey city for a visit. :D
There is a charity wine tasting on Wed Oct 20th 6:30 - 8:30. It's for Robin Hood which is a fantastic poverty-fighting organization in NYC.
I hesitated posting this here, because listing a $150/ ticket wine tasting just reeks of elitist BS that could get me flamed. But, it is for a fantastic cause, and if anyone here loves wine, or wants to support Robin Hood, or just has money to burn to get a good buzz on, you might want to check it out.
$110 is tax-deductible and you also get a $50 gift card from Zachy's, a local wine store, if you buy tix this week.
You also get a free high-speed express taxi ride with Magh33ta from the tasting at 8:30 to get to Joe's Pub by 9 pm for Carl's show.
Info is
http://2010winetasting-homepage.eventbrite.com/
Lastly, the wines they are pouring are ridiculously good. I should be in good form by Carl's!

Still one of my favorite "small world" moments. You literally blew my friend away! She was overjoyed to see someone outside our circle of friends sporting the ba-ba-bananas shirt!
I am in Brooklyn, and up for some hanging out. While I have some friends to visit, I am solo for a few days until AJ arrives in time for the last 3 shows.

QuoteSo what record stores should I be checking out in downtown New York?
my two favorites are other music (4th b/n broadway and lex) and generation records (thompson b/n bleecker and west 3rd). you can dump some serious change in those two shops.
Gonna make my lifetime membership to Gold's Gym count.
You can stop spotting me when the opener is done playing.

So are we going to play a huge game of ultimate frisbee in the park???
It would be too much fun. Or maybe we could make a large human pyramid. We should at least get together for a forum group photo...

Really want to check this place out...came highly recommended from a friend. Can any New Yorkers vouch for it?
Nom nom nom.
Oddly enough, I wandered into that place on New Year's Day after MSG '08. It looked pretty cool, but I didn't try anything.
It was my "only in New York" moment on that trip ;D
If anyone wants to meet Joel (the new guy coming from Canada, see his thread) and me for a late lunch at Zen Palate on TUESDAY, please PM me. It's a vegetarian Chinese restaurant within walking distance of McGee's. We're gonna be there at 2:30-ish then go to the pre-show right at 4.
My apologies for cross-posting 3 places. I figured that was less annoying than a whole new thread for this, which I realize has a pretty limited appeal (maybe none!). But, if you are in town with nothing to do and like vegetarian food (or are adventurous), the more the merrier. Just give me a heads up so I can get a table for us.

What have you guys been up to? Did any of you get together on the off night?
:)
EDIT: I just saw the Joe's Pub thread, so that answers one of my questions! ::)
Anybody do or see any awesome shit in NYC other than MMJ?
I spent a chunk of 2 days cruising through Central Park. Been to NYC, and Central Park tons of times, but never been to the upper parts of the park, I want to say it was called 'The North Woods'....absolutely amazing in fall, the colors were beautiful, streams were flowing, just awesome.
I also spent the better part of Wednesday in the MoMA....wow! Some amazing art in there including some of the most famous paintings known to man, saw the original Van Gogh Starry Night and Rosseau's Sleeping Gypsy, and tons of other amazing art.
Went down to the financial district and ground zero. Not really sure why I wanted to go down there other than it was a part of NYC I'd never checked out, interesting but not too exciting.
Had every intention of going to the Museum of Natural History on Saturday....but somehow didn't get out of bed until 2 p.m. I've been there before but wanted to go again.
Had some amazing food. My favorite Italian restaurant ever, in Greenwich Village, Villa Mosconi...a NYC tradition for me http://www.villamosconi.com/. Also had an amazing dinner at Momofuku Noodle Bar http://www.momofuku.com/noodle-bar/ and of course, plenty of pizza. I also think I must have hit up 30+ different bars and pubs, including Finnerty's, the SF Giants bar not too far from Joe's.
what did you do?
I walked around, a lot! Such an amazing city. To be honest I didnt do a lot of sight-seeing or touristy stuff cause I just ran out of time (damn pretzels!).
i did go to Central Park though. My plan was to listen to Z to psych myself up for that night, but ended up just sitting in the middle of the park and listened to the sights and sounds that went past. I was blown away that you can be in the middle of the park and not hear the city that surrounds you.
Will definitely be coming back to NYC, and I'll bring Mrs Ralph with me next time, she'll love it. I wonder when MMJ are playing there again?!
Keep me posted, would love to show you and wife around Brooklyn

I can't recommend bluesky's Brooklyn tours enough! The lady has an amazing wealth of knowledge about the area :)
thanks Maggie, it was a pleasure!

This. ;)
Yeeeeeaaaaaaaahhhhh Central Parrrrrrkkkkk was the place to beeee...... well, so was Greenwich Village...so was........
I walked a lot, but I think I may have driven more...? I'd always had a pretty noxious anxiety about driving in NYC, and I finally felt composed enough and with sufficient driving experience to have at it. (I "wore my hard helmit" :-X) I also figured this would familiarize me with a greater portion of the city so that when walking time was on, I'd know what I was doing... (cue scene from last year when I was in Manhattan with a friend and we were going to Strawberry Fields..... and were totally on 72nd Street.....but were on the east side of Central Park and not the west..........it wasn't the end of the world, but we had a Phil Lesh show to catch and were on the clock!!) I definitely oriented myself to the area a helluva lot better this time around, and most of the walking I did was through Central Park or from C.P. to Terminal 5. I did rectangles around C.P. like 10 times and drove through Harlem a few times... learned not to go anywhere near Times Square with the car if I valued my... well, anyone's life. More than dangerous even I'd say it was just plain annoying. Waiting waiting and moooore waiting...
And food, definitely FOOOOOD! Found an organic gluten-free pizza place!?!? That was spectacular... when I did walk, I found the streets would turn into magickal havens of things I'd wanted or things of interest.... and Greenwich Village was confusing (not so organized as numbered streets around C.P.!) but it felt pretty rich with history. I listened to Simon & Garfunkel's "Bleecker Street" while I walked up and down parts of it the day of Carl's show...
All in all, after I got acclimated to the layout of Manhattan, I got a bit more comfortable with things and was able to enjoy myself a lot more knowing where I was and how to get where I needed to be.
My possibly favorite part of the NYC "downtime" experience was the total anonymity. I feel like it's so damn crazy up there, you can do about anything you like (as long as you're parked legally!) :P Walk into a coffee shop and just plug yer computer in, charge your camera... hell, don't even have to buy a thing if you don't want to, no one even notices you! Sleep in your car... hey there's a guy 5 blocks away sleepin on a bench, you've got it good!
So I still prefer the woods of course, the natural world is the real world for me, but that seemed to make my self-conqueration of the city feel even more special as I made my way around and learned some street smarts while I was at it. And Central Park saved my guts. :P Loved meeting every one of you guys during "up time," and it's true to say hanging out with everyone each night saved my guts too :-* Just wish I coulda hung with most of ya more!
Central Park at 2pm with a bottle of Chimay white....it was sublime! [smiley=beer.gif]

You can sleep in your car??? And to think I could have driven there and not spent all that money sharing that apartment! ;D
chimay = yummy at anytime of day (or night)
i've lived in ny and worked in nyc my whole (adult) life and still think some of the best things about nyc are found in either central park or the village.
anything goes here, people are (mostly) friendly, and this place is incredibly tolerant of all types.
not to mention that musically, nyc is the best as you get the chance to see so many awesome bands roll thru. might not be for everyone but it works for me. 8-)

My favorite downtime photograph: when Steam Engine ran to take a picture of the dogs with the red boots. Two weeks later it still makes me laugh.
