Im looking for new bands to listen to, getting tired of the same tunes day after day.
I like: rockabily, folk, ska, indie, and political punk. (and basically anything with strings/piano)
Sarcastic and self aware musicians really float my boat.
Few bands: MMJ;Wilco;Billy Bragg;Okkervil River;Decemberists;Belle and Sebastion;koufax;bright eyes;desaparecidos;old 97's;the explosion;bad religion;neutral milk hotel;the reputation;the weakterthans;pavement; the anniversary;
(only some examples)
basically if you know any good folk/rockabily bands please print them.
thanks
Gillian Welch is terrific. So is Kathleen Edwards.
Have you ever got into the old stuff? Gram Parsons and all of his bands were great. GP and Grievous Angel are staples of my musical diet. The Flying Burrito Brothers were also really, really great. Townes Van Zandt is brilliant (if you don't have it, his Nashville Sessions album is absolutely lovely).
But you did say new bands. Ron Sexsmith is pretty fun. I really like Tom Russell. Fred Eaglesmith is super. They're not new, but they still make new music.
:)
check out the Usual. they are a sacramento based acoustic rock band. you can find there stuff at www.inthemiddlerecords.com . there is some free mp3's and if you like you can buy it off the website.
hope you enjoy them.

Some of these bands would be "trip-hop" for lack of a better term, but all are excellent.
please excuse my ignorance... but what is "trip hop"? ???
Stumbling home, after a drink has been taken.
Obvious.
I'm not sure how to define "trip-hop" but I didn't make up the term. It's typically used to describe groups that have a slower "trippy" sound and also have a turn table as part of their instrumentation. It's nothing like rap, but I guess since they are taking a page out of rap book with the turn table, they added the hop to the end. Morcheeba, Zero 7, Sneaker Pimps, Portishead, at times Elbow, are examples of bands that fall into that category.
Elbow! now there is band, seen them live 5 times now and they've been awesome every time, I urge anyone who is not familiar with them to check them out. A really nice bunch of guys too, had the privelage of meeting them a few times now, lead singer Guy is an absolute gent.
Yeah.....seen them a couple of time....They rock.
D.
The Philly band Marah have a new release out entitled "20,000 Streets Under the Sky"(Yep Roc)...Pretty cool Philly soul, rock, doo-whop,etc. and tremendous songwriting by a brother duo...Their live shows are way over the top...
go to www.goodluckcricket.com/hellsayers to hear some psychedelic noise folk. Some say "johnny cash meets spiritualized". We recently played w/ Smog, My Morning Jacket (in Jan, actually) and last week, Chris Robinson and his new band
I saw Elbow open up for Pete Yorn which my only chance to see them. I bought their disc the next day and have been a pretty hard core fan since. I like Radiohead a lot, but I generally tell people that I think Elbow is the better band which of course sends people into rages :).
I'm with you, they're definitely more approachable than 'the head' anyway. If you can find the cd single of 'any day now' there's an awesome b side called 'George lasoes the moon' they used to play it live but seem to have stopped.
Yeah I have the George Lasos the Moon. Elbow actually has a quite a few really good B-sides. Finding them is typically the trick...
Another band some of you may want to check out is I Am Kloot. They're a British group who I think Elbow is helping get started...
Fugazi...nuff said

QuoteJoni Mitchell still rocks!
Yes she does!
dug out my scratched copy of "hits" from her "hits and misses" collection..."carey" has got to be the best beach anthem, ever...
I love Joni Mitchell.
My brother was in the Vancouver airport having a beer during a layover. (Actually, it was more of a thing where they asked if anyone could delay their flight for a day in exchange for first class tickets the next day, a free hotel, a bit of spending money and some meal vouchers. So he took that.)
Anyhow, he was at the airport bar, drinking a free beer, when he turns to the woman next to him, and it's Joni Mitchell. Also having a beer. And smoking when you were still allowed to smoke.
So he says "Hey Joni." And she says "Hey" back. And he was going to leave it at that, but he really wanted to tell her how much he loved her music. So he did. It's had a lot of meaning for him. He said, "In fact, it's funny, because I've been listening to Blue non-stop lately." It was even in his walkman right then. She said, "You have?" And he said, "Yeah."
She said, "God, you must be depressed."
Ha. I love that story.
I got some more bands for you:
Firewater (Great Klezmer music)
Dada (First band I saw that played better than thier CD)
Emmet Swimming (Great lead singer with a deep voice!)
Tom Waits (an aquired taste, but a classic)
Does anyone else think Elbow sounds a bit like Catherine Wheel on vicoden? Maybe just me.

CC,
Catherine Wheel disappeared after the failure of their album "Wishville" It was a real peice of crap. I think Mr. Dickinson was so discusted with himself, he went into retirement. Hopefully he gets his shit together and makes a comeback with a new group of musicians. I grew up listening to "Chrome", which was the last decent album they made. They really rocked live too. I do think Elbow sound a bit like Catherine Wheel would have if they hadn't lost it somewhere along the way. Peace.
I may be the only one here, but I find that MMJ and The Flaming Lips go pretty well together. Maybe the somewhat headier singing styles, but who knows. Im a huge fan of both. Give 'em a listen or three, if you haven't already.

Eisey,
I would have to wholeheartedly agree with ya'. Slightly different styles but a cool mix indeed. :)
I would agree as well. Saw the Lips with Modest Mouse on "Unlimited Sunshine Tour" couple years ago. I would have to say MMJ is slightly better live, but different style of course. Both are absolutely great at what they do. Does anyone else like Broken Social Scene? I picked up " you lost it in people" and it is pretty good. Peace.
I can't get into the Flaming Lips. I picked up "The Clouds Taste Metallic" and fail to find the brilliance in it. Critics love it, and they have such a strong following that I continuously keep trying to get into it, but I don't think they hold a candle to MMJ.

Yeah, Clouds is hard to appreciate as a first album. Go pick up the Soft Bulletin, and you'll definitely see what i mean on the Lips-MMJ connection. You have to be in a sugar-coated head bangin tripped out mood to appreciate a lot of their earlier stuff, but as it progresses, it gets a little more interesting.
My personal fav from the Lips is "Hit to Death in the Future Head", featuring "Talkin Bout The Smiling Deathporn Immortality Blues" (whomp whomp)

yeah, I've still got a couple albums to go till I can call myself a true fan, but I'm gettin close. HtDitFH is on my list of needed albums. I think Clouds Taste Metallic rocks though. Anybody who wants to tell me that "Lightning Strikes the Postman" sucks, is a....hmmm...(for lack of better words) weiner.
A friend of mine listens to many things all of you guys have listed, but he will not listen to MMJ. He has admitted that the music is good but he doesnt like dudes voice. I know, whats wrong with him? But the main reason is he is not cool with the name. If I mention them he tells me he doesn't have my jacket and he hasn't seen it. He's silly, a great guy, I will make him love them yet.
He got me into John Frusciante. Now he is awesomeness. Nothing on Jim, but awesomeness just the same.
you can't win them all over...yet. ;)
Wait, let me make sure I have this straight. He likes John Fruciante but he doesn't like Jim's voice? Have you heard John Fruciante sing?
Got this in the e-mail, not bad..
