Title: What the?
Post by: MMJ_fanatic on Aug 11, 2004, 10:03 AM
so I'm cruising my e-mail and there's a routine bicuit from ticketfuhrer.  I'm giving it a quick once over when what pops to my attention?  Joe Satriani touring with none other than the the remnants of Deep Purple and (who could be in this outfit) Thin Lizzy?!?!?!  Did someone cross the wires in the time space continuum?  Joe baby whatta are ya thinkin'? ::)

now jc, you can't seriously put VR in the same category with that easy listening bubblegum group Asia... you may as well lump Jimi Hendrix in with the Monkees...hey wait a minute didn't he tour with them for a, er, very short time

asthetics aside, it's the same concept, eh?  you've got a band made up of former members of other famous bands...

such as:

GTR
who can forget "when the heart rules the mind"  ;)

Queens of the Stone Age
not really, but with Dave Grohl guesting on drums and the aforementioned Mr. Mark Lanagan contributing vocals, that SOUNDS like a supergroup...no cheese factor here.

Ozzy/Quiet Riot:  Randy Rhodes came from Quiet Riot.  Can't decide if that was a good thing, as he died not long after, but was somewhat famous in QR before getting plucked by Ozzy..who himself was from Black Sabbath, who begat Ronnie James Dio as Ozzy's replacement, himself being in Rainbow, which came from Deep Purple's Richie Blackmore, whose lead singer played a one album stint in Black Sabbath in the early 80's and then reformed with Blackmore in Deep Purple...seems weird, eh?

i want to get back to velvet revolver!  wtf?!?  yes, slash has a job again, but i wish it was at denny's.  when i first heard about the lineup, i was thinking, "these guys are tired of rock and roll's current state, and they've banded together to get things on the right track."  so i saw them live when i was in la.  WOW!  two words:  big mistake.  where are the solos?  where's the heart??  mediocrity is a waste of our time AND theirs.

have they been neutered? ???

Max Bacon looks like Michael Bolton.

How about David Lee Roth's band for an 80's "super" group (loose use of the word super).... wasn't Steve Vai on guitar and Billy Sheehan on bass?

Damn Yankees was Tommy Shaw from Styx, Ted Nugent, the guy from Foreigner, and I don't know who the drummer was...

two RESPECTABLE (though not great as the sum of their parts) 80s supergroups:

the Highwaymen (Johnny Cash, Kris KRistofferson, Willie NElson, & Waylon Jennings)

Traveling Wilburys (Dylan, Roy Orbison, Jeff Lynne, George Harrison, & Tom Petty) - they all had pseudonyms, but I can't remember them all.  I think Dylan was Lucky Wilbury, and somebody was Lefty Wilbury.

Lest we forget Temple of the Dog combining members of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden.

the difference with them is they were a one shot deal tribute to Andrew Wood--another drug abuse statistic--whereas some of these other bands were actually trying to reinvent themselves/careers :D
