Title: Bonnaroo Order of Excitement
Post by: EC on Mar 22, 2005, 11:28 PM
All right.  So they're not all announced, yet, but from what is available, what is your order of most excitement?  For example, I don't really care what is playing at the same time, I will not miss the boys for anything.

So my list goes like this:
My Morning Jacket
M. Ward
John Prine
Iron & Wine
Joanna Newsom
Earl Scruggs
Jurassic 5
The Allman Brothers
Allison Kraus
Drive-by Truckers

Oh yeah, damn, Mars Volta.

Those are the ones that I want to see, and I'm hoping scheduling will permit.  I'm really interested in a lot of the other bands, but those are my favourites so far.

I feel like I should be excited about the Black Crowes, but I'm not...  Dave Matthews I could care less about.  I know nothing of Widespread Panic, but there's still time to learn.  Jack Johnson sounds interesting - anyone know him?  Ray Lamontagne is great, but I've already seen him here in Toronto.  I kind of feel like I need to see The Word for respect to greggy.

Oh yeah, I don't know Rilo Kiley at all - I think that person is mentioned in Joanna Newsom's liner notes - any insight?

The free yoga is VERY cool.  Must remember my yoga mat.

jack johnson is pretty nice. i have one of his albums, brushfire fairytales and it's got a beach/summer/hanging out with a cold beer vibe, which can't be bad. he'd be cool to check out if you can. at acl fest, i had to stand 10 miles away to see him, but he sounded good!

oh my god, free yoga! that's yogariffic

What up EC, widespread panic is a "jamband" from Athens, GA.  Most of the album stuff is pretty good, but they focus on the live show thing (often with 15 minute long songs).  They follow the same Grateful Dead, Phish thing were they never seem to play the same show twice.  I haven't seen them for a few years (as they have a new guitarist)--but, if you like some roots mixed in with your jam, they may just be your bag.

Cool, thanks you guys.  :)

Yeah, the yoga bit is very cool.

We have no idea when MMJ (or anyone for that matter) is playing, correct?  Do we get a running order when we get our tickets?

Also, they mail the tickets on May 18th.  We leave May 25th.  Pushin' it a leeetle bit.

Wow.  I love their website.  I love the little owl flying around.  And this one song that's playing is very fun.  I like the horns.  I like horns.  Plus she just said shoo bop shoo bop.

I like bands that have girls and boys.  Fun.  Thanks, Riny!

p.s.  Speaking of yoga, maybe we should all meet at the yoga place on the first day - just to get our bodies all stretched out and feeling good - prepare ourselves for the insanity that will ensue.  ;)

I think the Truckers are playing on Friday. I think. Seems like it's listed as Friday on their website.
Yes, EC, see them. I know I've sent you some of their stuff, but you really need to see them live.

Yeah, I definitely want to see them.  Probably more than the Allman Brothers and Allison Kraus, come to think of it.

There's just so damn much!  :)

Govt Mule
and something off my usual beat for a late night treat!

Hmmmm, you might be right.  Is it Jenny Lewis?  And M. Ward sang a Joanna Newsom song at his last show.

Aw, I'm SO excited about the Black Crowes!!  I'm going to see them in Raleigh next month, and I'm so stoked.  But I agree with you on Dave.  I've saw them 5-6 times when i was a DaveHead (yes...i'll admit it).  I still respect them as musicians and all, but having them at bonnaroo is too predictable.  Plus it'll draw in the "hey look at me, i'm a pseudo-hippie college guy who listens to DMB" crowd.

It's definitely a frat party at Dave shows.

Creepy...

Maybe Dave will be playing at the same time as My Morning Jacket, and so we can all avoid that little scene.

(Or maybe not, and we can show some people what's really what.)

Yeah, I really like Dave Matthews in spite of the "scene".  I watched a Phish documentery recently, and It just freaked me out that thier shows are such a spectacle. At some point it seems like the "scene" becomes bigger than the music and I think that is really wierd.  It seems to me Widespread Panic is more or less the same way, From what I've heard the Music is Fine but nothing spectacular, but they managed to create this huge scene around it.  I don't know I could really be totally off base.  I mean I don't want a show to be the background music while I play hacky sack, smoke a bowl, dance the same as the 180,000 people around me, and don't shower for three days.  Oh wait, I'm going to Bonnaroo.   ???

This is one reason why I avoid the big festivals.

I've always wondered how a "scene" sprouts up around certain bands.  I've known so many people that are so turned off by a band's fans that they don't give the music a chance.  But I do like some Dave Matthews.  I'd just rather listen to him at home.

Yeah I was in college in the mid-1990s and at that time it became really cool to wear Patagonia and The North Face and go to Phish, Widespread and Dave Matthews shows.  It was definitely the "in" thing to do.  Eventually most of us got burned out of the 17 minute jams in the middle of every tune and realized that it was probably a lot more difficult to write a great song than to jam for 17 minutes in the key of A minor.

Anyway, I still have plenty of friends that are still into the jamband thing--not that there is anything wrong with that.  They spend their time and money going to String Cheese Incident shows.

Us old Deadheads have made it a way of life.
17 minute jams - not really trying!

Saw Toots about 20 odd years ago.
It was a magic set! Try and catch him, if you can fit him in.
