Here I go again, & I don't mean the Whitesnake song! Although it does have a place in my heart...
Hefner - "Breaking God's Heart"
the Magnetic Fields - "69 Love Songs Vol. 1"
Lush - "Lovelife"
the Kinks - "Face To Face"
the Jam - "The Sound Of The Jam"
Nick Drake - "Five Leaves Left"
Red House Painters - "Ocean Beach" "Rollercoaster" "Song For a Blue Guitar"
the Damned - A comp my buddy made me!
And I'm STILL addicted to 80's pop music!!! This week, it's the Eurythmics, Joy Division, the Jesus & Mary Chain, and Yaz that's on heavy rotation. It's just been one of those years that is sooo bad, you need some pop to jump start your day. Dig? Well... either pop, or "Just Because I Do!"
Last week I was having an extremely shitty day :(, so I rewarded myself with a CD purchase. Namely...
"Elephant" - White Stripes :D
I've also been revisited some old favorites...
"Bringing It All Back Home" - Bob Dylan
"Greatest Hits"- Simon & G-Funk
"Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea"- PJ Harvey
and my favorite MMJ song (at the moment): "It's About Twilight Now" 8)

Tons of respect to Plank10 for mentioning Lucero. Madjack is the coolest little lable noone never cared about.
Playing right now, at this very moment: Lucinda Williams (the self titled album from 88 ).
also:
Be Good Tanyas.
Clem Snide.
The Anomoanon.
Uncle Tupelo (always)
Dwight, Hank, Buck, Merle .. you get it.
and loads of other stuff of course.
Madjack is great. From what I hear the next Lucero album will be on a different label though. The guys in Lucero are Jacket fans and would love to open for them.
damn, not to repeat myself...
but that new white stripes is excellent.
I bought `Lifted or The story is in the soil, keep your ears to the ground´ by Bright Eyes a few days ago. It totally blew my mind. I haven´t been able to listen to it without crying. God, it`s amazing. I have to admit I was feeling really fucked up when I bought, so that helps, but still, it´s extremely heavy. I love it so much. His lyrics are the best I ever heard, his screaming is just sending cold shivers all through my body. I gotta have everything he ever made. I can´t believe it. Goddamn!
marktwain, the new Fruitbats album is good... But I'm afraid Echolocation just proved too hard to top...
I'm still playing Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and Being There on a semi-daily basis
The new Yo La Tengo album is getting some play
Richard Buckner and The Hill still put me to sleep everynight
Mercury Rev -- All is Dream
Best of Otis Redding
Marvin Gaye -- What's Going On
Townes Van Zandt -- Roadsongs
O:
Indeed you must buy all things Bright Eyes. His first full length is amazing. Its sounds alot different because he used to be much heavier with the reverb. They did a great tour earlier this year with a 15 (i think) piece orchestra.
Automaton - Clarions & Banners
Boy, I´ve been reading about Bright Eyes and I had the plan to go buy everything he ever made, but that´s a LOT. Bright Eyes has three albums, a huge amount of EPs, then he has this band called Desaparicidos and he used to be in a band called Commander Venus. Could someone give me some tips to start with? The highlights? Except ofcourse `Lifted´, for that one´s still spinning wildly in my CD-player.
I started with "Fevers and Mirrors". I enjoyed it because it meshed with a transitional time in my life.
But then last year I went to a Bright Eyes show and was thoroughly repulsed. A young (21), aloof, and pretentious waif (Mr. Oberest) was crooning drunkenly in my rock n'roll club (supported by an 8 member all-female band) to a crowd of adolescent girls and their mothers!
My wondering eyes could not believe it, but I actually saw a bra fly onto the stage.
I was pretty put off by the whole affair.
Just my two cents.
Tooth:
You must have just hit a bad show. I've seen them afew times and never seen anything like that.
O:
I honestly like it all. Fevers and Mirrors and Lifting.. are my favorites. the EPs have lots of good stuff on them too.
Yeah - I saw Desaparecidos last year, and they rocked! They were actually getting heckled - kids calling him gay. Connor then took a water bottle with the lid off, started shaking it so the water was shooting out a bit at a time, and said, "C'mon. C'mon man. I'll (ejaculate) in your eye!" Maybe I have a juvenile sense of humor, but I laughed my ass off! And he hung out at one of my favorite bars before the show and was "freaking out" listening to the Smiths on the ol' jukebox. A friend of the Smiths is a friend of mine! Oh yeah - I've been listening to Fevers and Mirrors too. The new Supergrass is damn good too! Keepin it real with Bjork. Kickin out the jams with the MC5 and the New York Dolls. And bein' a lil' emo with Ant (from Hefner) "Floating On The Breeze." ooooooh. Red House Painters have an album coming out this year, as does front man, Mark Kozelek!!! TWO good to be true!!!:D
I've seen Bright Eyes once, and though they (he) was pretty darn good ... and I had hardly listened to any of the albums before I went.
By the way, just came came back from a Lucinda Williams show here in Stockholm and while I think she's great (and it was pretty good), she should lay off some of the "bluesy" stuff and just be a country singer. I want violins. I want "Crescent City", "Lafayette" and "Louisiana Man". I want "Six Blocks Away", "Passionate Kisses" and "The Night's Too Long". I'd even take the "Happy Woman Blues" version of "I Lost It" over the one from "Car Wheels on a Gravel Road". Still, the lady can SING!
hey pinte,
you familiair with a band called Homeland? they're from sweden... malmo i believe...good stuff
Had never heard of them until a week ago when they opened for Richard Buckner in Stockholm. It was pretty good. Haven't heard anything they have recorded though.
Okay, people, thanks for the advice! Thing is, I´m TOTALLY broke at the moment, so I won´t be able to follow them, yet, but thanks anyway! :)
I forgot to mention that Sophtware Slump by Grandaddy has been in my CD player since I bought it 6 months ago...
Sophtware Slump is a great cd, to bad they are playing the same night as MMJ, I would like to see them also. The Jacket is gonna get my money and time that night!
Currently playing: MMJ Boulder show and Death Cab.
YES! The Boulder show is amazing!
Yeah, I love the break in Evelyn Is Not Real... When after some jackass yells Cobra for the 20th time some chick comes in: "Hey! Say it don't spray it!"
Hillarious.
I love listening to that spot in the live shows. You can see them all up there; hair down and motionless, the crowd gets restless, you can see the faces of the people who are new to mmj wondering what the hell is going on... Then here comes Jim again, with impeccable timing...
currently in the 5 disc changer:
flight test, flaming lips new ep.
evil heat, primal screams new one. (go buy it NOW)
low, cracker
sticky fingers, THE stones
(name escapes me) the last album by the verve.
Wilco, The Minus Five, Golden Smog, and any solo Jeff Tweedy I can get my hands on.
the weakerthans and any solo John K Samson I can get my hands on.
Doug Martch - Now You Know
Bob's Bootleg Series - always loved the Rolling Thunder Revue...
Sonic Youth - A Thousand Leaves
Joni Mitchell - Court and Spark
Christine Fellows - Little Birds
Kelly Joe Phelps - Roll Away the Stone
Interesting that someone should mention "Court and Spark", as there is actually a band named after that album (I guess that's where they got the name anyway).
The Court and Spark is from San Francisco and I haven't been able to listen much to them, but "National Lights" is a fantastic song that I think a lot of people on this board would like. It's downloadable on Audiogalaxy.
QuoteI bought `Lifted or The story is in the soil, keep your ears to the ground´ by Bright Eyes a few days ago. It totally blew my mind.
hey o, bright eyes is tourin holland in august... oh and if you're in for a last minute NY trip you might wanna check out the bowery ballroom on sunday ;)
Ehm, NY, well, I have debts already, so I guess I'll just wait for Augsut. But thanks for the advice! :)
Donna The Buffalo. Voice in my Head...America...and 40 Days and 40 Nights.
wow it looks like i'm going to have to win the lottery before i can buy all or some of these albums.
right now i'm liking
graham colton (amazing!)
will hoge
limbeck
lucky boys confusion
the doors
The Court & Spark is a cool band.
Brian Jonestown Massacre
Did I post here before without mentioning Freakwater? Think i did. So I'll do it now: Freakwater. With my apologies to Jim James (and Will Oldham), Catherine Ann Irwin is my favorite Louisville musician.
Her solo album from last year is amazing too.
Ouch. But hey, everyone is entitled to their opinion...
Jim and the boys might be the most important Louisville export since Louisville Slugger or Muhammad Ali, IMHO.
*cough* Peewee Reece *cough* *cough*
Peewee Reece was from Louisville? That's awesome! I met Maury Wills once... Let's see... Sacramento has the Deftones, 7 Seconds, Tom Hanks, Molly Ringwald, and Papa Roach. I should've just mentioned Tom Hanks and Molly Ringwald. I'm kinda ashamed about the rest. Although the new Deftones record isn't THAT bad.. :-/ The good thing about being a musician in this town is that you don't have to do much to be different than everything else. That said, I'm now listening to -
Gusto - No Evil Star
Smokey Robinson & the Miracles
T. Rex - Electric Warrior (Re-issue)
Bonnie Prince Billy
Bob Dylan - Nashville Skyline
The Tindersticks
The Black Heart Procession - Amore del Tropico
Adorable - Against Perfection
The Pastels - Truckload of Trouble.
Hey! Did you guys notice that I didn't list ANY 80's POP? Finally! uh.... but I listened to New Order's "Substance" yesterday... damn.
beijing bicycle ost
redd kross
dylan's rolling thunder revue
martin & neil
the winter blanket
For the moment I'm listening to:
Neil Young: On the beach (to me, his best album)
Stache (belgian group): thee without sin, throw the first stone
The Doors: Without a safety net
Bonnie prince billy: I see a darkness (which is not true, but hey it's a fantastic record)
Loudon Wainwright: History
Tom Waits: Invitation to the blues
But I think I'll start digging those out metallica tunes again, I'm in the mood for some good old speed metal.
Burning Brides, Fall of the Plastic Empire
Led Zeppelin, anything. I've got a cravin' for all things Led these days. Gonna run out and get How the West Was Won since it seems so cool...
I don't think anyone mentioned these bands yet which is just wrong
The Microphones
Johnny Vanderslice
Death Cab For Cutie
The Postal Service (I can't stop listening to this)
Tons of R.E.M., `Road apples´ by The Tragically Hip and the new John Cale EP, `5 tracks´ wich is really good. Check that one out!
the shins oh inverted world
the jayhawks rainy day music
fruit bats mouthfuls
you really need to get the new jayhawks
www.thejayhawks.net
Hey, nolan, with all due respect, but give it a rest on The Jayhawks, will you? I'm sure they're great, but we don't need 6 topics to get it, man.
I'm sorry, that wasn't really a mellow post. ;)
But man...
oh boy we've whipped out the "mellow" thingy again.... ;)
it's all good. imagine how we'd sound going to the jayhawks bb and raving about MMJ-he's just a Jayhawks diehard, no more or less fanatical than we (me and you, that is) are.
;)
i'm currentlylistening tothe new radiohead which is great once again. also listening to audioslave, some old stuff by blind melon, the doors, velvet undergound and at dawn by of course mmj
Placebo, Eighties Matchbox, Death in Vegas, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Donnas, Audioslave, new Steely Dan and 25 Years of Ace Records. All this at work.
Love this job. Sometimes.
i had the bad brains - rock for light early on, but now at dawn is playing, which made me go to this site, and sign up to this message board.
hehehe
- The Jayhawks are gods of alternate country -- right up their with Wilco and Ryan Adams. And Rainy Day Music is very good. (I keep trying to talk the guy at ear x-tacy into giving me that big poster on the wall.)
- I might have mentioned it before, but Richard Buckner's album The Hill is amazing. //www.richardbuckner.com Check it out.
- I picked up the Black Keys after seeing a suggestion by someone here and have been very pleased with it. Blues + Punk = Teh Win!
- Ryan Adams -- Heartbreaker
- The new Gillian Welch album
- All the live Jeff Tweedy I can get
I was very bad at Amoeba a two weeks ago...I mean really bad. You know you spent waaaayyyy too much money when they start offering you free t-shirts and canvas bags and other tokens of appreciation for your patronage. Last week I was in Louisville and wouldn't even let myself go down Bardstown Road past ear X-tacy since I've exceeded my CD spending limit by, oh, my rent or so. Amongst my finds:
*Ben Folds Live--I can't even tell you how fabulous this album is. It's just Ben Folds, his piano, and very compliant audiences doing some of his solo stuff and a lot of Ben Folds Five favorites. ("Last Polka," "Best Imitation of Myself," and esp. "Narcolepsy" are magnificent.) The version of "Army" is one of the greatest moments of live show I've ever heard on any album. If you are in any way a fan of him or the band, you must own this.
*Starflyer 59: Old--This album is everything guitar-driven, melodic, soundtrack rock should be. (You know, soundtrack rock--very visual and moving--you hear it and you can just imagine it playing during a scene in a movie or in your own life. Or am i crazy?)
*Tanya Tucker: What's Your Mama's Name?--She hit the scene at 13 many, many moons ago, and, in my opinion, is one of the most underrated country singers ever. Her later stuff is crap (once the Nashville industry sank their teeth in), but her old recordings are priceless.
*Freakwater: Feels Like the Third Time--Don't ask me why I didn't own this before. All the talk about Catherine Irwin and I felt compelled to get this.
Old stuff I relied on for my drive from Louisville and that I suddenly have caught myself listening to despite the fact that I just purchased dozens of new CDs:
*AC/DC: Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap--I think the world might just be a better place if more people embraced AC/DC instead of relegating it to the Shivelyesque distant reaches of civilization.
*Whiskeytown: Pneumonia--Perfect for driving through the South at dusk. I'm sure you know what plays at dawn.
*Afghan Whigs: Black Love--One of my biggest failures in life was not falling in love with this band until after they had dissolved, so I never got to see them live. The energy in their music is unparallelled by any of their Seattle-era contemporaries (and yes, I mean all of _those_ bands.)
And the Major Heartbreak/Disappointment: I ignored everything I had read and bought Liz Phair's new album. I managed to convince myself that everything I'd heard was prejudgmental snobbery. I only made it through the first half last night, but from first listen I really wanted to hurl myself out of my window...and my ground floor neighbors have cacti. :(
pitchforkmedia.com
While i don't always agree with their reviews most of them are reasonably accurate. The Liz Phair one was perfect. They gave it a 0.0
That is a shame as the Afghan Whigs were amazing. Black Love is great but Gentlemen is still my favorite album of theirs though.
Poor Liz Phair... She only got a good review from People magazine. They said it was a mix between Sheryl Crow and Avril Lavigne... and that it was good. I don't nderstand how anything mixed with Avril Lavigne could be good. And it's Liz Phair for chrissakes!!! She should be making records that influence others, instead of making records that are influenced by the likes of a teenage, fabricated pseudo-punk. Anyway - I've been spinning some old Smoking Popes, Miles Davis, Nina Simone, Frank Sinatra, Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Guess Who, Seals & Crofts, and TONS OF AVRIL LAVIGNE!!! ha. I'm such a snob... sorry.
Death Cab for Cutie - Transatlanticism
Everyone should buy this album right now
Elliot - Song in the Air
This came out awhile ago but i've just really started ot listen to it
Small Brown Bike - The River Bed
Fantastic if you like what they do.
I just have to promote one band today. They're my other favorite band. Everyone has got to listen to the Red House Painters. My friend Angie gave Mark (Singer/uitarist/writer/producer) "At Dawn," and while he was Tennessee for some reason or another, he gave it a listen and loved it(of course)! O - you mentioned that you loved the slow and sad of "the Tennessee Fire." If so - you've got to listen to this band. My favorite albums are "Ocean Beach" "Self-titled (Roller-coaster on the cover)" "Songs For a Blue Guitar" "Down Colorful Hill" But every album is amazing! The lyrics are amazingly intense, and Mark's voice "soars and takes my wounds with it." That's actually one of his lyrics. Anyway - everyone - please check this band out if you don't already know them. Is there anyone else on the board that loves them? Or am I alone?
Hey, Hipkink, thanks for the tip. I'll check 'em out when I have the time. :)
Billy Joe Shaver
he kicks ass
A while ago, someone posted on the `how did you get to know MMJ´-topic that he heard about them 2 years ago, but only recently bought his first record of them. Well, I´ve been wanting to buy a record by Cat Power since 1998 (!) and two days ago I finally did. `You are free´ is the one and I recommend it highly to everyone who, like me, likes the sad ballads like `I will be there when you die´. In fact, some of the songs on that wonderful album are those kinds of songs that are even better when you put ´em on really loud in one room, leave the door open and go sit in another room. You know, how the whole space fills with that music... Magnificent.
Cat Power - You are free
It´ll change your life. :)
Agreed. I've had that album playing on and off for awhile now. He War, Don't Blame You and Speak For Me are great tracks
hip kink said...

I saw the red house painters a couple of years ago, and really liked them! mark kozelek's solo stuff is really good, too! The album Rock and Roll Singer is awesome.
I've been listening to a ska guy a friend introduced me to name Chris Murray. He's wicked... check him out!

Ms. John Soda - "No P. or D."
Neil Young & Crazy Horse - "Rust Never Sleeps"
The Court & Spark - "Bless You"
Loose Fur - s/t
!!! - Me and Giuliani Down by the School Yard (A True Story)
Get it and love it. The title track is fantastic. This indie dance music is too much fun.
YES! !!! is based in New York right now, but they're originally SACRAMENTO boys!!! Nick (The singer) was kickin' it at Espresso Metro the other night. Totally cool guys... And if you want to see an amazing, energetic live show, they're definitely good for that. You can't help but dance.
I've been in a nostalgic mood, so it's been a healthy diet of Van Morrison (His Band & Street Choir / Tupelo Honey), R.E.M., Simon & Garfunkel (Bookends / Bridge Over Troubled Water), Janis Joplin (Pearl), The Velvet Underground (Loaded), Savage Rose, My Bloody Valentine (Isn't Anything), and De La Soul (3 Feet High and Rising). mmmm. tasty.
Agreed !!! does put on a great show.
Today i'm listening to lots of Afghan Whigs which is making me wonder about the new Twilight Singers release.
Richard Hawley
you have to check him out!
Kings of Leon - Youth & Young Manhood
My daughter just bought this 2 days ago and it's been in the player since. I told her the lead singer sounded like Bon Scott but she didn't know who he was. Song # 4, Joe's Head is really good.
The day before yesterday I went to the library(where you can also lend cd's) and I brought a surprise along. Without knowing, and just looking at the cdcover, I took Songs:Ohia (lioness) with me. When I first heard the song, it sounded very familiar to me. Then I got it, it's that guy who's singen on the song translation on the split cd my morning jacket/songs: Ohia. I never realised that it was the name of a band. But James Molina's voice is just wonderfull. Especially the first song, the black crow, is just throatcutting. Oh, and I also took Beth Orton along. She's also fantastic. Wow, the world is full of splendid music and I only have seen 0,5 % of it. Great!!!!
Death Cab for Cutie
http://www.barsuk.com/web.cgi?dcfc&dcfcnews

I've never really heard much Beth Orton, but there's a live duet floating around w/ her and Beck doing the Stones' 'No expectations.' It's really amazing - check it out if you can (I found it on Kazaa - which I don't think violates any copyright law since it is not commercially available). But if you dig that song you should also check out the Jacket doing 'Easy' (commodores)/No Expectations - live, 4/16/2000 - John's got it on his server.
While I'm waiting for It Still Moves, I'm listening to:
Doug (Built to Spill) Martsch - Now You Know
Jeff (Neutral Milk Hotel) Mangum - Live at Jittery Joe's
Bill Monroe & Doc Watson - duets (Smithsonian Folkways)
Anybody heard the new Neil Young yet? I'm curious
I just got Central reservation from the library. And it's a great album, especially the first song with ben harper on guitar. I still have to check out the other album's.
Also, Bonnie prince billy is great (and I find it a little familiar to songs:Ohia). If I can give you a hint: I see a darkness is a masterpiece. Check also palace music and the palace brothers, both formal connections of will oldham alias bonnie prince billy. Especially the album lost blues and other songs( kind of a best of) is worth listening at.
Not sure if many people on here are into this but
Atmosphere - Seven's Travels comes out on 9/23 so while you're buying It Still Moves you should pick this up. The best hip-hop i've heard in years. www.rhymesayers.com They just turned down all the majors and signed a distro deal with Epitaph.

Augie March and MMJ are the two up-and-coming bands that I plug as much as possible because I am really passionate about their music. Please, if you see one of their albums do yourself a favor and pick it up!! Because I want someone to talk about them with. :)

I've been listening a lot to soul, lately. The Four Tops and Smokey Robinson, to be exact. They don't make 'em like that anymore. Or, wait, they do. Well, ehm, apart from My Morning Jacket with "It still moves", they don't make 'em like that anymore... :)
Hey O, You'll like this. I pulled out all of my R.E.M. records yesterday. I have everything all the way through Green...Even a couple of 12" singles (superman etc..). Anyway...It's funny you mentioned motown. Being a longtime resident of the motorcity I always have at least one group on the turntable. Right now it's the Supremes "where did our love go?" album...Man...I would love to here jim and the boys do that song! ;D
Hey, if you have some time and you don't know to what you want to listen at, try the album the brooklyn side from the bottle rockets. Those guys rock big time and the lyrics are good too.

Yeah, they should definitely cover some Motown songs. In fact, I think that the label 'soul' is the label that fits best on their music. Just as it does on R.E.M.'s music. It's that feeling you can't describe and I feel it with Motown and I feel it with MMJ and R.E.M. as well...

Has any1 here heard of Type-O-Negative cos at this club i went to i asked almost every1 and only 1 other person had heard of them, i became rather upset (and not to mention pissed :P)
Miracle Legion! I've been trying for a year now to find the record "Me and Mr. Ray" of that band, for it has the song "You're the one lee" on it, that I found on the internet once and I totally love it... www.boudisque.nl has some stuff of them, but not that record. Wich record do you recommend, Riny?
Oh, and ofcourse I know Type O Negative! I've always found them the most hilarious band on the planet. I love to read interviews with Peter Steele... He rules.
Let's see. 6 in the car, 3 at home:

QuoteOh, and ofcourse I know Type O Negative! I've always found them the most hilarious band on the planet. I love to read interviews with Peter Steele... He rules.
Wow, I am the only person out of roughly 400 who have heard of them!!! And then I suddenly know 4 people who like them never mind know them!! ;D
I'm now on such a high, and it's not good cos it's 8:15 in the morning :P!
I have to agree with you on the whole hilarious thing... they so are and Peter Steele is the best out of them!! *dances round IT room with friends chasing her trying to calm her down* Um, gtg now but cool!! woohoo!!
c ya H :-*
Type o negative rocks. I'm not so fond of their first nazi-periode (as a matter of fact, I don't want anything to do with it), just because of their fascist lyrics, but then they realized they went the wrong way and came up with the beautifull albums bloody kisses and october rust. But for me bloody kisses is their best album. And peter steele is indeed a funny looking guy. A giant with only a very little head on his massive body. Unfortunately, I never had the occasion to see them perform live.
Yeah, gotta agree with you on that note, i wasn't too keen on that period either but i like their bloody kisses, october rust and life is killing me, stupid li'l me left bloody kisses at home (scotland) and am now down here in kent!!!! :'(
Does anyone have their next tour dates in the UK cos i really wanna know, as well as MMJ tour dates[glb]PLEASE[/glb]
Anyway, will speak to y'all soon! ;D
C Ya H. :-*
Okkervil River, "Down the River of Golden Dreams". Best record I've heard in a long time. The missing link between Will Oldham and Neutral Milk Hotel.

people took the nazi thing way too seriously, its pretty much pete's humor and the buttons he likes to the push. i mean he makes that song and all of a sudden he's chanting on the next album on how he's gonna lead the black people to their domination of the earth. he's just a naturally funny guy.
Old 97's - Too Far to Care
The Make-Up = Save Yourself
Iron and Wine - The Creek Drank the Cradle
Bob Segar and the Silver Bullet Band - Stranger in Town (on vinyl, no less....)
I'm in a weird place, musically. I've been listening to -
the Stills, Outkast, Caesar's, the Jam, the Spencer Davis Group, Ima Robot, Built To Spill, the Stockholm Monsters, the Dandy Warhols, the Lyres, and the Pastels. I also really like Jim's version of "Time of the Season/Spooky!" Anyone hear the new Strokes single? Not bad, not bad t'all. But it's nothing new from them. It doesn't sound like they've progressed at all. To hold my attention, band's have to evolve. I'm not sure the Strokes can do it. But I think the Shins can!
The new Strokes album is just boring. nothing new and nothing exciting. Everyone should just buy another copy of It Still Moves :D
Oh yeah. The Shins are rockin.

QuoteIts about time someone else on here mentioned lucero. Saw them last weds and their playing again tonight.
No joke about that, bro....you'd think that one of the late night guys would hook Lucero up....anyway, they seem to be picking up momentum. We only are a couple of hours away from their home base, and WE have trouble getting their CD's in stock!
Ok....quick story about Lucero. We had them here (Batesville, Arkansas), playing at a restored movie theater downtown. We've had a lot of great acts here..(RL Burnside, Derek Trucks Band)..and we had been wanting Lucero here for a long time!
Anyway, the guys did not disappoint, played an AMAZING show and hung with the crowd afterwards. They had a small box of merch...really not enough to sell, so they THREW it out to the crowd!!! I scored a Lucero T-shirt and Tennessee on vinyl......
Anyway, they are a great bunch of guys and worthy of a lot more press than they are getting.
NOTE: If you catch Lucero live....GRAB THE ATTIC TAPES!!! This CD is only available at the shows.
Peace out~
CEREALKILLER.
Hey cereal,
Your the first guy who mentionned the gathering in his list. This band rocks and they have a couple of very good albums. I find mandylion one of their better albums. It always gets me in the mood. Weird that this band is known in Arkansans.
My girlfriend just got me a tape with some stuff on it by Richard Cheese... Anyone know that guy? He's a bit like Mambo Kurt, doing stupid jazz versions of metal songs... His version of Chop Suey is great. ;D
Richard: "Why did you leave the keys upon the table?"
Choir:"You wanted to!"
Richard:"WHY did you leave the keys upon the table?"
Choir:"You wanted to!"
Richard:"WHY DID YOU LEAVE THE KEYS UPON THE TAHAHABLE?"
(pause)
Choir (mumbling):"Well, you said you wanted to..."
one step ahead. Picked up The Attic Tapes when they were through here 6 months ago or so. Great stuff. The new album is reakky good too and i'm digging on the bonus disk of demos and live tracks that came with it.
They should open for the Jacket. that would just be a kick ass show.

Ok...true story.
I used to be a confirmed metalhead...totally into the bands on Century Media, Relapse, and Metal Blade records. A while back, we went to Milwaulkee to check out Relapse's Metalfest....and at that show, one band changed my entire outlook on music.
THE GATHERING. We were just kinda wandering around out there between groups, and spotted The Gathering on stage. We stood there and watched, heard and saw Anneke, and instantly fell in love. Great band, awesome singer. I highly recommend all their CD's to anyone.
Personally, I think they are one of the most underrated bands on the planet.
Lacuna Coil is another one of my favorites....
Peace out..

What a trip. I know the band and I didn't get a copy of the new CD with the bonus disc..... ::)
Ben told me that he probably had a few more copies lying around or he'd just burn me one.
I'm trying to get our local promoters to book Lucero and MMJ...maybe something will get started there, you never know.....
~Killer
the Chocolate and Ice ep
Which is making me wish they'd played some if these songs live in the last few shows i've seen.
Yeah, the live version of Sooner rocks...
The Shins
Belle and Sebastian
W i l c o
The Meat Puppets
The Decemberists
Neutral Milk Hotel
Jimi Hendrix - Electric Ladyland
Quote
Neutral Milk Hotel
In the Aeroplane is one of the best records of all time. I hope Jeff starts writing and recording music like that again.
I agree with the Neutral Milk Hotel. It's rare that someone can write lyrics that are so sexual, and yet so beautiful. It's hard to keep stuff from sounding dirty. But he does it so well.
What is funny about NMH is that I was in the Army with a guy named Jeff Mangum...it couldn't be him, it just couldn't!
Have y'all heard Jeff Mangum-Live at Jittery Joe's?
It's definitely not as good as studio albums, but it's fun and interesting. You can hear a baby crying in the audience quite a bit. He does King of Carrot Flowers before it is complete, and one verse goes "...this is the part where I didn't write any lyrics..."
Anyway, i just love live albums. Can't wait for MMJ's. (though I've got quite a collection of unofficial live MMJ thanks to John.)
Oh, and right now I'm listening to:
Lyrics Born--"Later that Day"
& Thomas Hardy-"Mayor of Casterbridge" (book on tape) :)
The new R.E.M. compilation... Ofcourse I bought it mainly for the second disc, with b-sides and rarities. Some pretty neat stuff on there. A huge must-have for R.E.M.-fans that haven't the money to buy all singles and compilation stuff. Oh, and those new songs "Bad day" and "Animal" are way cool!
QuoteI bought `Lifted or The story is in the soil, keep your ears to the ground´ by Bright Eyes a few days ago. It totally blew my mind. Goddamn!
finally gave this a listen too. you're right o. great stuff! love the drummin and the harmonies on 'make war' are sooo sweet.
Hey, I'm glad you do, Riny! Yeah, the drumming is really great as well. The instruments used on that record give it a weird feel. I still love it, but I haven't heard it in a while. Guess I'm gonna change that this week... :)
Other than lots of artists already mentioned..
The Music
(a outstanding live band)
Bobby Bare Jr. Young Starvation League - playing in Nashvillle next weekend. Great show. They opened for MMJ before and that's how I ran across them.
Ok all who said Bright Eyes is good, is definitely wrong. This guy is more than good, he's awesome. For the moment I'm listening to the album "Lifted or the story...." and it's a great album.
Also in my cdplayer for the moment, our own belgian talent, namely Admiral Freebee. Hey O if you don't know this guy yet, check him out, he's also awesome.
Yeah, I know Admiral Freebee. I like his recorded stuff, but last summer I saw him live at A Campingflight to Lowland's Paradise and that was rather disapointing... Pretty boring bluesrock, I thought. But maybe he just had an uninspired day, or I should just check out the album.
Oh, and I totally agree with you on Bright Eyes. You should see him live one day. The intensity of that man is unbelievable. He sure has bright eyes...
TONS of postings. Can't read them all. Elbow is mentioned yet?
Asleep in he back....great album, just got the second album, Cast of thousands. Radiostation www.kinkfm.com plays the beautiful track *fugitive motel* now and then.
I read the note about Bright Eyes, I know them for a while, had to quit listening to Soft machine (1968) :-[ and replayed Make war.....nice song indeed...
Ponder
Nice to see people mentioning Lucero. Great band. Three solid albums. I got the free bonus cd when I bought "That Much Further West" in Louisville (EarXTacy).
And again, with people talking about Neutral Milk Hotel's "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" (def. one of the best records of the 90's) - it ought to be a crime not to go and buy Okkervil River's "Down The River of Golden Dreams".
That bonus cd is pretty neat. Some stripped down recordings of the new songs in their old stlye and some interesting early/live versions of the rest.
Damien Rice - O
O those last three songs! O!
Thx to cereal killer, I'm diggin' out the gathering again. Waw indeed, their albums are great. I just rediscovered "how to measure a planet". Awesome relaxing cd. I find even a ressemblance with the jacket. Anneke is also using a lot of reverb for her ethereal singing.
Every jacket fan should give this a try.
Blind Melon
Haven't listened to this in a long time. great stuff. damn i hate that bee girl video
okay, i know i'm probably asking for trouble, buuuut....i'm overcome with joy and i'm not sure what to do. i won a $100 gift certificate to the local record store, and i want to break my habits and indulge entirely in new music. i've heard some recs for the postal service and the shins. what albums from the past year do i absolutely *have to* buy??
It still moves
"Mouthfuls" by Fruitbats - essential! One of the top two albums of the year (along w/ It Still Moves, of course)
The Postal Service - Give Up is amazing.
What besides MMJ do you like?
did I already say The Shins? Chutes Too Narrow!!

Thanks for the recs, y'all...of *course* i already have _it still moves_ (!) although i was thinking about picking up the "run thru" single. i remember the fruitbat love being discussed a while ago, so i think i'll check them out. i already have & love ted leo's latest. mighty fine.
unfortunately, the gift certificate didn't arrive until after i left for holiday a louisville...i guess it gives me something to look forward to when i get back. in the meantime, i'll just be distracted by my sparkly new iPod (!!!!) :D :D :D Current raging playlist:
Spoon: Kill the Moonlight (oh my, how this album is ADDICTIVE!! Crack!)
Modest Mouse: the ghost & antarctica
Outkast (well, Andre 3000): The Love Below
Dolly Parton: Hits
U2: Zoo TV Paris boot

Just got the Wrens and it moved right into my top 10 for 2003.
I would be playing ISM on LP, but it arrived at my door with record #2 broken! ::) :o
InSound was really cool bout it, they said just send it back...nice customer service those dudes have.
Ooh, thank god for that, John! A MMJ-record broken... The horror! :o
;D
Yes. I played "Taps" in its honor before I put it back in the carton to be returned.... :'(
I'd rather have a broken MMJ record than the entire Limp Bizkit catalog in perfect condition.
QuoteI'd rather have a broken MMJ record than the entire Limp Bizkit catalog in perfect condition.
While I agree 1000%, it would be great to have a working copy...it truly was sad to see it broken.
oh, I would have cried :'( no doubt.
I was just trying to put things in perspective (there are some people that acually own Limp Bizkit records :o ???

Drop what you are doing and go get Explosions In The Sky - "The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place"
Its so good, it'll make you wanna jump up and smack your grandma.
Mp3s can be heard at http://www.insound.com:
Indeed!!
Explosions in the sky is just magnificent post-rock!! Really moves me.
Haven't heard this new album, but their first was in cdplayer this morning... just loooooovvvee it.
MP3 is this link:
http://www.insound.com/mp3/download.cfm?mp3id=1987 (6MB)
If you like the first album, you're gonna crap into your pantaloons when you hear the new one.
It its a brighter affair full of triumphant soundscapes. Melodic and inspirational.
Its been a REALLY long time since an album has gripped me like this one has.
I'm going mad listening to the Beach Boys (EVERYTHING!), Stevie Wonder (Songs In The Key Of LIfe), the Beatles (Revolver), Harry Nilsson (Pussy Cats), Dusty Springfield (Dusty In Memphis), Stereolab (Sound Dust), Van Morrison (Astral Weeks), and My Morning Jacket (At Dawn)! I firmly believe that MMJ's second album will go down in history as one of the top ten albums of all time. I can't believe the influence that it has had on my music, and my friend's music. I just had to say again that I love and adore that record more than all of my other possessions!!! ;D
Ok new discovery: Norvegian group: Madrugada
Album: Industrial silence!
What a voice!!!!
Check it out!
The Unicorns Who Will Cut Out Hair When We're Gone
Insane Pop, Catchy but not saccharine!
Indeed, lfish!
Sivert Høyem (Madrugada) has a superb voice. A bit strong-Leonard-Cohen-voice. Saw them last year in AB Brussels. One of the best gigs I saw, really.
Also check out their later album "Nightly disease".... Haven't heard their latest (Grit) or any EP's, though.
Also laying next to cd-player today:
Do Make Say Think - & Yet & Yet
Durango - Shipwreck Party (bit like 16 HP, Belgian guys, check'em out!!!)
3-mile pilot - Another desert another sea
Miles Davis - Ascenseur pour l'échafaud (relaxing after hard working day...)
Ahh Do Make Say Think is great. Their newest Winter Hymn Country Hymn Secret Hymn has been in my rotation for awhile now.
Madrugada: I can't say I don't like them, but I once saw a concert of them on Dutch television and it irritated me, 'cause it was so Nick Cave-ish, at times I thought I was looking at a cover band. I don't know if all their material resembles Nick Cave so much, but that spoiled the fun for me.
Well O, personally, I can't compare them to Nick Cave. Ok they also make rather dark, black music, but they completely have their own sound, and nowadays this is hard to find. Besides this, I really like the voice of the singer. A warm melancholic deep voice, with a lot of force in it. But now and then, as we know, musical taste differs from person to person .
Neil Young - On The Beach
It's truly brilliant!
I follow you completely in this one Sal. I find it his best album. So much atmosphere and the cover of the album is just brilliant. It's getting me always in the mood.
And revolution blues, what a song, wow those lyrics, just awesome. And I haven't even mentionned ambulance blues.
It's strange because all the fans claim this record to be one of the best young has ever made, but he himself denies it. For him this record brings back miserable feelings. He just had to bear the loss of danny whitten (his guitarist) and bruce berry(his roadie). And he himself was a total wreck. And you can hear all this on on the beach and on his next album tonight's the night.
If you don't know this album, get it and it will change your life!!!!
Good call, guys! For years, I only had the vinyl, then a CD recorded from the vinyl. I'm so glad Neil finally gave the go-ahead to re-release that album. It is definitely one of my favorites from him. ;)
"See the Sky About to Rain".....with Levon Helm's signature drums....a masterpiece!!!!!!!!!
Yeah your definitely right over there. I find "when the sky's about to rain" very well suiting with the cover. Neil young standing on the beach with a cloudy rainy sky above him, his head hanging a little bit down. Just beautifull. This is one of those moments where I find the cover at least so important as the music itself. This one song is so meaningfull for the mood neil young was in.
The Decemberists
Just found out about this band and I highly recommend them. I picked up all 3 of their cd's and went and saw one of their shows in L.A. (1/17/04) You can listen to some of their stuff from Hush Records. (esp. Shiny)

Lately i've been listening to:

QuoteRight at this minute: Welcome to my Nightmare, Alice Cooper. I have no excuses :-/
There was some kind of video for that with Vincent Price wasn't there? I remember seeing something on PBS - or that may have been a hallucination - sometimes my memory of events from the late 70s get a bit cloudy ;)
'sometimes my memory of events from the late 70s get a bit cloudy'
The late 70s are fine, its everything else since then that's gone and forgotten, for me.
There certainly was a video with Vincent Price - and he features on the album. Your memory serves you better than you thought :)
The new Richmond Fontaine....Post to Wire. Band called Miton Mapes from Austin....Ted Leo...The Detachment Kit....Sun Kil Moon.
D.
For some reason I dug up a 3-CD-box of '30s jazz from my father's record collection and I'm constantly listening to it now. Some music that is...
Just made a mix for a friend & put on "i will be there when you die" from Theater Romein, Leeuwarden, The Netherlands, April 16, 2000. Awesome!
Also, just bought a used copy of "chronicle" by CCR. I haven't listened to them for something like 10 years, and they're a lot better, and more complex, than I remembered. Susie Q is amazing. Give 'em a try.
Dead Kennedy's mix in the car that I can't stop listening to....something about the puking at the end of T.D.T.F that is just hilarious.
Also, "Terminal Preppy" is just oh-so good.
The Beta Band - Three EPs
Has been in the rotation lately as well as
Againist Me!
Can't wait for their tour with Lucero to hit the est coast

Been listening to CCR lately myself. Excellent songs. really stands up well, I think.

Why greggy, that sounds like an invitation ;)
I'm far too old for you! But a nice thought ;)
John Mayall - Blues from Laurel Canyon. Just got a copy on cd. Can remember when I heard this for the first time. Just checked and this came out in 1968! Frightening that I can remember it note for note but can't remember what happened yesterday. You all have this to come to!
Drive-By-Truckers....the new Mogwai...BMRC....Jet... The Thrills....the new South disc.
D.
If you like At The Drive In you should be listening to THE MARS VOLTA! This is one of the new projects from the split of At The Drive In. Although I love At The Drive In you will be happy they split once you hear The Mars Volta.
Right now it's a sort of mix bag really.
Modest Mouse, Microphones (Mount Eerie), South San Gabriel (latest), MMJ's Tennessee Fire, the new Mountain Goats and some "old" 16 Horsepower.
Looking forward to hear the new Einsturzende Neubauten and "Culper Ring" by Ms Kris Force
Saw The Stills in Manchester last night, their new single 'lola stars and stripes' has been on the stereo all day. The Open were on first their 'never enough e.p.' is an awesome debut.
Wow, there is such a diverse mix of music being listened to by the MMJ fans. Fantastic.
I'm currently addicted to Echoes - the Rapture, Franz Ferdinand, the Lost in Translation soundtrack (Kevin Sheilds new stuff - amazing), The Duke Spirit EP, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - 2nd album (so gutted - they had to cancel their Monday night gig here in Dublin because of Pete's damaged hand).
Also loving.... Gang of Four compilation, Outkast double, Canyon - Empty Rooms and Stellastar* (eponymous) and my mates The Future Kings of Spain (www.redflagrecords.com).
Always loving .... Interpol, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Elbow, Bonnie Prince Billy and, of course, My Morning Jacket.
Can't wait for.... new Von Bondies, 22-20s, new Interpol.
God. I love music.
Bob Mould...including his legendary band Husker Du and his offshot Sugar...pick up the disc Copper Blue by Sugar and you will become a fan. His album Black Sheets of Rain is dark and hard and his album WOrkbook is acoustic bliss. Husker Du's discs that are a must are Warehouse Songs and Stories, New Day Rising and Candy Apple Grey.
The new Sleepy Jackson is worth a listen....
D.
Quote...pick up the disc Copper Blue by Sugar and you will become a fan.
oh yeah, copper blue is amazingly addictive
one of my all-time favourites!!!
The new John Frusciante record is for sale! I just bought it, haven't heard it yet, but hey, it's John Frusciante... drool, drool... ;D
Oh, and I bought Tim Buckley's self-titled debut album and "Goodbye and hello" on one CD. Heard a lot of good stuff about it, so I'm curious.
Quote
Oh, and I bought Tim Buckley's self-titled debut album and "Goodbye and hello" on one CD. Heard a lot of good stuff about it, so I'm curious.
ahh, nice! not his best stuff on those 2 albums but still awesome! if you wanna hear something mindblowing, try his album 'starsailor' and 'happy/sad' and 'dream letter-live' are also must-haves
next time get yourself some fred neil too! ;)
I heard the sampler form the Frusciante record and it was great. Must go buy the full version today.
If you get into the Buckley stuff have a listen to John Martyn's 'Solid air' album its amazing one of my favourite albums ever. Anybody from Detroit here? A band from there called 'The Deadstring Brothers' played my club last week, they were great and really nice guys they're coming back next month to promote their new album.
The John Frusciante album rocks ass. There's even disco on it! And a 6:30 min. Pink Floyd jam! Wicked, truly wicked.
As for Tim Buckley, I heard his later albums were better, yeah, but only after I bought his first two. Still, those two are so fucking good, I'm probably gonna buy more of him in the future! And yep, I'll think of Fred Neil too... :)
Many of you have complimented the Wrens new disc...The Meadowlands. It is great and if you can get a copy of Secacus...buy it. It is impossible to find unless you want to go on Ebay and buy it for 75 bucks. However, they are on tour....I saw them on 19th and they rocked...you can get it for 10 bucks at the show. Check their concert schedule and if you have a friend in that city force him to go the show(he or she should have a ticket anyway) and make them pick up the disc. Also, the opening band Irving were very tight. The magazine Magnet is a great source of new information on these types of bands. Did not know a thing about Irving...read about them in Magnet and said let's make a point to see these guys...well worth the effort.

Jawbone - Dangblues cd (http://www.dangblues.com/ and wicked news, just got a mailout today, Jawbone's comin to London in April for 2 gigs and a Peelie sesh : ) as one reviewer said bout this one-man band from Detroit who plays/busks all over with a guitar, harmonica, bass drum, tambourine bunji-corded to his foot, all amped up with jumper starter cables attached to a 12 volt battery "this is blues how it should be - dirrrty, raw, funny & exciting" indeedy!.)

ps: Loved the MMJ show at the Astoria, (loved Junior Senior too, tho I read a review which said bout them recently "2 words - Black Lace" which I thought was well out of order) but err, we were right down the front, bang next to the towering stack of speakers and right near the end, the soundman must've seeriously whoomphed the vol. right up, cos our ears were well'n'truly blown, tings were all dizzy'n'big,echoey-chambery'n'ringin'n'dingin for 4 days afterwards!
Noticed on the nme.com, that some acts have been confirmed for Glasters 2004, and My Morning Jacket are strongly rumoured to have been invited too : )

-and to see the PIXIES reunite at Coachella (and WILCO and RADIOHEAD!!)
-and, as always, MMJ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ah, the Pixies reunion! I'm not sure if I wanna see that. You know, it could be absolutely fucking great (I discovered them in 1997, so I never saw them live), but it could also turn into the biggest disappointment ever. But yes, I am curious..
it could be like the Jane's Addiction reunion. i'm frightened
Masterplan. Again and again and again. Just can't get enough of it at the moment. Soon it will be another track. Then another. It's a great life, isn't it?
Thin Lizzy! Especially 'Cowboy Song'.......I know it's my age ;)
Air Conditioning by Curved Air, especially 'It Happened Today'. I'm gradually buying the CD version of every vinyl in my collection, and coming up with some strange, long forgotten but often fab sounds.
A fans mix of Smile using 1966/67 and 2004 live recordings. Groovy. Especially the second movement. Surfs Up is one of my favourite songs ever.
Old louisville stuff. Undermine, erchint, sunspring, etc
http://www.louisvilleshowcase.com/ has more mp3's up now
Lucero - all of it

Pearl Jam - Lost dogs ;)
M.Ward - Transfiguration Of Vincent
I got this yesterday and i just don't like it. maybe it will grow on me
Descendents - Cool To Be You
Is great. Some of the songs sound more like Bad Religion tracks than Descendents but they're still great
The Fire Theft....boys that were in Sunny Day Real Estate got back together and put out a real good disc....
D.
The Wildhearts - Coupled With.
Brilliant stuff. All their 'b' sides, or at least most of them. Pop music as a positive concept! Do youself a favour and give them a spin.
Alabama 3: Exile on Coldharbour Lane. I'm packing up for my house move and keep coming across things I've just got to listen to. It's becoming an interesting day :)
listening to
summer at shatter creek -s/t
interpol- bright lights
mum-finally we are no one
stars of the lid
Screaming Trees - Dust......cosmic,man.
Screaming Trees-there's a name I haven't heard in a while...they were totally the bomb back in the days of yore...
Uncle Anethesia also rocks..."Bed of Roses" might be one of the finest rock songs ever written...
I'm into different music every hour. I can't keep fixed on something, strangely. Well, it has an explanation (still got my ex running through my head), but it's kinda nasty, 'cuz I feel like buying CDs everyday, 'cuz the ones I buy only stick with me for a few days and then I feel they don't work no more. Bizarre.
Curtis Mayfield,
He always gets me in the mood.
QuoteCurtis Mayfield,
He always gets me in the mood.
Ehm, what mood, exactly? ;)
I'd venture a guess that it puts anyone in the mood for...well, you know. Whatnot!
My Goodness boys!
Actually, at this time of year I think everyone feels a bit 'in the mood' for stuff.
Anyway, I'm listening to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs (the 3 eps and the album) in preparation for a trip to Brussels next Monday to see the new yorkers, as they seem to have no intention of visiting the Emerald Isle again.
Also, just got The Stills 'Logic Will Break Your Heart', which I'm loving. And Bonnie Prince Billy sings Palace Music. Magnificent.
Oh, and I got Liars new one last week. It is crazed. But I like it.
Back to work....
YES! It is spring, and when the temperature goes above 70 degrees F (that's 21 C to everyone else out there!), love is in the air! Put on some Al Green, or Curtis Mayfield, or hell, even Barry White and dig it!
And O, since you're such a good dude, I bet dollars to donuts that someone nice will come along. I have my fingers crossed for you!
Let's not mention John Martyns 'Solid Air' or Marvin Gaye's 'Lets Get In On'.............just toooooo smooth! ;)
Obviously has some effect on me, should of course have been 'Lets Get It on'.
Cold shower please, nurse.
Cold showers all round.
Except I'm not Really feelin the Soul suggestions (although I do respect them). Me, I prefer a Rock n Roll soundtrack. Maybe some Black Rebel M.C. or The Kills, Mmmmm, yes, the Kills and The Duke Spirit. Hot.
It's cold in Ireland still, but the leaves are coming out on the trees. And it's brighter.

Hey, we're all about the rock around these parts. Totally into BRMC...Guided by Voices, anyone? The Hives?
QuoteEhm, what mood, exactly?
Well,
That guy has a lot of soul to give and it always make me happy and funky in a kind of way. I ain't talking about love or sex, no sir ....
Yep and even Barry "luvmachin"" White can do the trick nowadays, with spring risin' ahead, although I still have to find a good record of this guy because he made a lot of crap also. Anyone a suggestion?
Quote

GBV - Amazing. I only recently got into them - bought the recent compilation. I can't believe how good it is. And how influential they've obviously been.
Not so crazy about the Hives though. Not a real band I don't think.
Led Zep 4: Rock and Roll :D

Here's something to brighten your day O.... ;D
Thanks, buddy! ;D
No worries mate!
As you can see, I didn't post a photo of my beloved Ms. Otto...I think you said Liv Tyler was your obsession.
(due to workplace constrictions, I was unable to post the nude shot. Sorry!)
OK, that's it boys - into the cold showers right away!
Kidding.
She's a beauty alright. It's a pity there are never any girls posting here .... we could talk about hot rock and roll boys...
oh well.
You mean, like Julian here?
;D
Thank you Mr Conway! That's beautiful.
And what about Peter Hayes of BRMC and singer from the Stills and some of the Rapture and the youngest of the Followills and of course the lovely Carl of MMJ.
I could think about them all, all day.
You'd swear I was 16.
QuoteIt's a pity there are never any girls posting here .... we could talk about hot rock and roll boys...
I'm a girl! (well I used to be :-/)
I lust after Viggo Mortensen and our own dear greggy - not necessarily in that order ;)
Oh no, not Viggo! All of us mere mortal men crumble and tremble before the almighty Aragorn...
Speak for yourself JC!
Now Greggy, come on. We can't compete with a handsome devil like Viggo...not that I know what you look like (nor do you know what I look like...Riny seems to think I'm a mix between rivers cuomo and morrissey ;D)
Thx John for reminding me of the beauty of Miss Taylor.
And euh...
Can you drop that nude pic in my private inbox? ;)
John Conaway, porn distributor... :(
Well, not porn per se...oh what the hell. On the way!
QuoteNow Greggy, come on. We can't compete with a handsome devil like Viggo...not that I know what you look like
I think I can clear this up. Greggy looks a bit like Viggo, only sexier ;)
:-[
Blushing too much to participate.
Hello doctor, nice to have another female presence on the board. Viggo is divine in as Aragorn but as his regular self he is a little dull don't you think? The suits, the short hair, the lack of personality.
I just thought of someone else... the ultimate really: Mr.Vincent Gallo. That man knows how to dress.
What time is it where you all are. I just got up - it's 10.30am in Ireland.
hey, how did this currentlyplaying-thread turn into an imtoosexyformyshirt-thread? ;D
You're absolutely right.
Back to the music.
This morning I'm back on The Stills.
Quotehey, how did this currentlyplaying-thread turn into an imtoosexyformyshirt-thread?
I dunno. It all started with the first warm summerbeams on our pale white skin.
Guess seasons do affect people's mood and drifts.
But your right, back to the currently playing section.
For the moment elioth smith/figure 8.
Hey, at least I appreciated it. :)
QuoteHey, at least I appreciated it. :)
hey, didn't say i wasn't enjoying it. go on, all you sexy...... ;)
btw, been listening a lot to soundtracks lately. especially Lost In Translation and 21 Grams.
great stuff!
Right...back to now playing.
How about ISM for the 10000000000th time? 8)
well then....
:D
She's lovely (who is she?).
I've got red hair too.
I love the Lost in Translation soundtrack. So good to hear Kevin Sheilds making new music. Do you love My Bloody Valentine? And the movie - so beautiful, so subtle, such a lovely pace.
I'm going to see Franz Ferdinand on Friday night. Do you guys disapprove? I saw them last year, supporting Interpol (what a dream night) and they were great even then. I'm just dreading all the band-wagonners that'll be there. I think I'm a bit too possessive about the bands I like. But I can't help it.
I just love music too much.
QuoteI just love music too much
There really isn't such a thing! Music is the sweet salve for the soul that is totally unique to the individual...embrace it! Being passionate about music is healthy and spiritually rewarding.
And that's Miranda Otto there...otherwise known as Eowyn in the Lord of the Rings trilogy...(insert gurgling sounds here ala Homer Simpson)
Music! It's there when you least expect it, it's not there when you really were expecting it, it's everything, it's unpredictable, it's impossible to say anything sane about it and yet we talk and talk about it, for what else is there to talk about? Music is like love but better and love is like music but better.
One song tears me down and pulls me up right now: 'Anywhere I lay my head' by Tom Waits.
"My head is a-spinning round,
my heart is in my shoes, yeah
I went and set the Thames on fire, oh,
now I must come back down
She's laughing in her sleeve boys,
I can feel it in my bones
Oh, but anywhere I'm gonna lay my head,
I'm gonna call my home
Well I see that the world is upside-down
Seems that my pockets were filled up with gold
And now the clouds, well they've covered over
And the wind is blowing cold
Well I don't need anybody,
because I learned, I learned to be alone
Well I said anywhere, anywhere, anywhere I lay my head, boys
Well I call my home"
And as for pictures... This is the one that does it for me:
Oh, my god, I'm turning into a depressed lonely guy drinking and smoking to Tom Waits and dreaming of Polly Jean... Where is it going to end? ;)
O,
you poor boy - you sound very down. Sometimes you just have to go through those hard, bad times in your head to get to the other side. Where the sun is shining and things are better. Don't rush yourself.
Polly Jean is a woman worthy of your fantasies. It has to be said.
Another great woman is Karen O.
I love these lyrics of hers.
Baby im afraid of a lot of things
But i aint scared of loving you
Baby i know your afraid of a lot of things
But don't be scared of love
Cause people will say all kinds of things
That don't mean a damn to me
Cause all i see is what's in front of me
And thats you
Well, ive been dragged all over the place
Ive taken hits time just don't erase
And baby i can see you've been fucked with too
But that don't mean your loving days are through
Cause people will say all kinds of things
That don't mean a damn to me
Cause all i see is what's in front of me
And thats you
Well i may be just a fool
But i know we're just as cool
And cool kids...
they belong together
Hang in there O.
:-*
Man, it's warm and beautiful in kentucky today, quite a change from the snow we had earlier this week. Time to break out some feel-good, warm weather music to cheer everyone up. Today I sold a bunch of old cd's, and got Allman Bros. live at the Atlanta Int'l Pop Festival (1970). I can't wait to hear it.
The new modest mouse really is fantastic. O, it shows definite Tom Waits influences, if that's yer thing.
Other good sunshine cd's:
The Harder They Come soundtrack
Bill Monroe & Doc Watson

Hey, thanks a mighty lot. It's the heartbroken blues, the kind of blues were support from cool, loving people is an incredible help... :)
But I fear it is getting a little embarassing about how I keep on talking about that on this forum. Oh, well.. It kinda fits with MMJ's music, I suppose. :)
Stop worrying and just talk about whatever you feel -it's good for you.
I'm going to install a new door-bell now (I know - so exciting), but I'll be back tomorrow hopefully.
Keep listening to the music. It's the only way.
Don't be embarrassed, we all wish you well, that's all. It's heartbreaking to see you so sad. One thing is guaranteed, though, it WILL get better, and you'll feel good again. If only you could go to sleep until that happens, eh?
I'd better tell you what I'm listening to, in case we get into trouble again for wandering off topic ;). Afraid to say it's Busted :-[ Now who's embarrassed? It's my kids, honest. It's their turn to choose.
Take care, O.
QuoteI'm going to install a new door-bell now (I know - so exciting)
Cool! Now don't hurt yourself... :)
O, you are among brothers and sisters here, so don't feel bad about posting ANYTHING. You know that, right? ;) It's allllllll good here on the forum.
Off topic or not, we're you're friends...so post away. Besides, you have some catching up to do! :D
Haha... Still haven't reached 1000. Well, in that case...
The reason I'm so fucked up now, is because, well, she left me, wich is bad in itself, but now we're being really mean and immature to each other, cursing and all the rest. A really stupid, immature breakup, the ugliest possible. And well, she was only 17, so it's not that strange, but it's fucked up.
You know what helps? Not listening to music, but making music. So, "Currently playing" is quite appropiate. Wich gets me thinking... Ifish, I wanna jam with you one day! :) And John, have you ever had any playing or singing experience?
QuoteO, you are among brothers and sisters here, so don't feel bad about posting ANYTHING. You know that, right? :D
Dead right JC.
We are here to help in any way we can. Thats part of the reason we are here. Share the pain.
It sounds trite, I know, but it will get better.
Keep the faith mate, love you to bits.
Just so I don't get bollocked, this day I am curently listening to 20 Miles, and thinking about Rammstein.
QuoteHaha... Still haven't reached 1000. Well, in that case...

17, wow, young. I think sometimes it's better if you just stay away from each other for a while. You both need some time and perspective.
Making music is cool - maybe the pain will inspire you to make something brilliant.
(doorbell successfully installed!)
QuoteWich gets me thinking... Ifish, I wanna jam with you one day! And John, have you ever had any playing or singing experience?
Okay count me in O. Maybe on one of my working trips in the Netherlands. Sometimes I have to go to Eindhoven. Is that far situated from where you live?
And john yeah, have you got an by whiskey and cigarettes affected voice, something like " I got the blueeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeess" (sing with a dark deep brown voice)
Maybe we can start the first crossborder internet band???
Of course we need a bassplayer and a drummer? Anyone.
Oh and before I forget, maybe we can gather multiple voices. I know jim hasn't got to do much lately.... ;)

17, wow, young. I think sometimes it's better if you just stay away from each other for a while. You both need some time and perspective.
Making music is cool - maybe the pain will inspire you to make something brilliant.
(doorbell successfully installed!)
Me, I'm 21, by the way. And as for music, I hope you're right - I'm about to record a new demo, next week, or something. :)
Congratulations with your doorbell, by the way! :)
Good boy O, that's the spirit!
I bet it'll come out really good.
Good luck with it.
Ding Dong.

PS I'm 32 going on 18.
Yes, congrats on the door bell!
To answer O's question, I was an aspiring musician in my younger days...in a classical sense. My pipe dream was to be a high school music teacher...until I found out I wasn't as good as everyone was telling me. I had a bad audiition at the music school I wanted to go to, and it broke my heart. :'( Sooooooo....I haven't really played since. I was quite good (or so I thought) at the family of woodwind instruments (sax, clarinet)...now that I mention it, that gives me a hankerin' for a long sax session.
(queues Morphine on the CD player.....mmmmmmmmmm, Morphine)
Hey john, that's funny. I used to play classical piano and people always thought I was much better than I was. I was never able to sight-read properly, and I certainly couldn't play by ear. Nevertheless, I tried really hard and got my Diploma in the end, which allowed me to teach a little bit. That was nice. I don't play or teach anymore.
Sounds like you really should though.
Go on. ;)
Ah, entertaining the broken dreams of yesterday...a long and winding road has past between then and now. Alas and alack, it might be too late for that.
On the other hand, I am in full "look for a new job/career" mode...hadn't thought of that as an option! Thanks! 8)
Make sure that whatever job/career you choose allows you plenty of time to listen to music. I work for myself from home which means I can listen to music all day everyday. It's fantastic.
OK, it's quittin time in Ireland so I'm off to get ready of Franz Ferdinand gig tonight. Then off to Brussels on Monday for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. So excited.
Have great weekends everyone and I'll talk to you all next week.
xx

Played 'UA' a few times recently - not a patch on 'Dust' ( but that's just the opinion of a large hairy Geordie who has just noticed that its turned very sunny outside, and whose team is in the semi-final of the UEFA cup on Thursday, and is very happy with the world at this minute in time. Thanks for asking )
Hello kids,
I'm back.
Check this for a catalogue of disasters:
I was supposed to go to Franz Ferdinand on Friday night, but my friend lost our tickets and only realised it 1 hour before the show. Which was two late for me to change my mind about the pair of freebies that had been offered to me that morning.
Then on Monday I went to Brussels on Monday to see the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and my uncle died while I was at the gig.
But it was an amazing gig. Karen O is mesmerising. And Brian (drummer) hung out with us afterwards. Me and him had a great chat about music and shared a few beers. So that was nice.
Anyway. There you go.
Sounds good.
How's the doorbell?
Sorry, didn't see the bit about your Uncle.
Bummer
Yes, what a bummer. Hope all is well...
Thanks boys, you are very kind. :'(

Urge Overkill or back on the road touring..pick a copy of Saturation....great disc. Another band to check out Beta Bad.

everyone should listen to this but I know O will love it
Joh Frusciante has released acoustic version of all the tracks on Shadows Collide with People that you can download off of http://johnfrusciante.com.
Go get them now
Thanks for that. Never heard anything by him. What would you recommend to start with?
Hey, Plank, thanks a lot! I always liked his just-voice-and-guitar stuff better than the full production of 'Shadows collide with people'.I'm downloading it now...
Greggy - first of all, you have heard him, 'cuz he's the guitar player of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and their new pop style is totally invented by him, but his solo work is far better than RHCP. To start with him, I advice 'Niandra LaDes and usually just a t-shirt'. That's rather heavy listening, though (he was on all kinds of drugs when he recorded it), so if you wanna start off with a lighter album, I suggest 'To record only water for ten days'.
Tell you who I love listening to is Guided By Voices....However, the have officially announced that they are breaking up after the new album comes out and then go on their last tour. A real loss for us GBV fans. Sounds like Pollard is going to keep writing and producing and perhaps touring solo. Those guys could rock on stage. Drink a Miller Lite and give cheers to a one of kind band.
D.
I just recently got into GBV. I bought the compilation (Human Amusements at hourly rates) and I still can't get over how consistently excellent the 32 tracks are. I feel like there's so much to catch up on - can you reccommend one or two albums to start with?
Hey, if you're up for some GBV I highly recommend:
-Alien Lanes
-Under the Bushes, Under the Stars
-Isolation Drills
-Do the Collapse
-Bee Thousand
Yeah, that outta cover it! ;)

'Niandra' is fantastic but is definately not easy listening. I'd recommend downloading some of these acoustic tracks. They show off his stripped down sound really well. The more recent albums are layed with alot of vocal and instrumental tracks so they sound very different.

Is that the index code of a record or something? Or did you mean the hiphop-ensemble D12, with that nasty Eminem in it?
what i've been listening to the past couple of weeks:
drive like jehu - s/t & yank crime
dazzling killmen - dig out the switch & face of collapse
quicksand - slip & manic compression
screaming trees - sweet oblivion & dust
pixies - surfer rosa & doolittle & the 4/13/2004 show
born against - patriotic battle hymns
sugar - copper blue & file under easy listening
Bob Mould is an amazing talent...go back an listen to some great Husker Du...Warehouse Songs and Stories and New Day rising are incredible and his "acoustic" solo disc Workbook is oustanding. Then throw on the downer Black Sheets of Rain. He covers it all.

Just got Screaming Trees 'Sweet Oblivion' - what an excellent album!
Make sure you pick up their album Dust too....

The new Sufjan Stevens album, Seven Swans, and Isaac Brock's alternative "Ugly Casanova". When or, rather, where depends on what my body say's.
Sufjan Stevens make me happy, and Isaac and his Modest Mouse make me....well,,,,, something.
And I'm not happy right now, Newcastle United lost last night. To Marsaille. Damn.

Your real name is Rat?
Doctor,
I would gladly offer a place to stay if there was any room in my Inn on that night - but I'm afraid it's going to be completely full. They could try some of the hostels - there are a couple that are in the city centre: The Brewery Hostel and Kinlay House. If they're having problems finding a place let me know and I'll see if I can find them somewhere.
Greggy,
very funny. No it's not Rat. Can you guess what it is?

Siobhan or Eve or North Pole.

Speaking of movies, AMC just showed "Escape From New York" last night. I can't figure out if Carpenter is a born again progressive arguing against the imposition of the state in criminal cases and the fascist leanings of America's penal system (more prisoners per capita than any other nation), or if he's a right wing loony saying that prisons in America are too cushy. Sorry O, but I can not read Dutch. I looked at Google to see if there was a Dutch to English translator, no luck. I have their cd "when I pretend to fall" and enjoy it very much. I saw them at the El Rey Theater in Los Angeles late last month, they were opening for the Decemberists. I actually liked TLW performance better and Decemberists. My favorite was "Unsalted Butter". I will check around to see if I can find a Dutch to English translator.

shit man, you should see all the vinyl in my house--I could probably side my house with albums ;). ps--uncle anesthesia rocks fer shure man!
well, of course there is a certain amount of cool to vinyl. it looks cool, the album cover itself is cool, the physical medium of vinyl is cool, and you can clean out your stash on a double gate fold. ;)
tapes, on the other hand, are worthless hunks of plastic with a string of tape inside of them that gets jammed, gummed up, and are usually as useless as 8 tracks after a few years of use. the sound quality is marginal, the hiss is as annoying as a mouthwash made out of curdled buttermilk, and the cost of them is hilarious as CD's (sometimes) run about the same price as these 1980's nightmares.
now, reel to reel is a whole other ballgame. ;D

In order of preference:
1) end of amnesia
2) transfiguration of vincent
3) duet for guitars #2 (hard one--typically only available as an import)
Right now I'm playing at lot of Sun Kil Moon, and bought three great cd's by Okkervil River, Bellwether and Neutral Milk Hotel. Recommended!!
Isaac Brock's Ugly Casanova is great as well.
And I'm looking forward to hearing Phil Elvrum's Mt. Eerie project/band.
so, what is the sun kil moon song Glen Tipton about anyway--I don't have any of their stuff but I am curious about their motivation/purpose for writing about the JP guitarist
Can't tell you the exact lyrics but it is about fans picking their preference of liking either Glenn Tipton or K.K. Downing as the better guitar palyer. There is also a different reference to Casius Clay and Sonny Liston exchanging blows.
D.
One more thing.....Judas just a put out a box set of four discs called Metalogy and their is an added bonus "classic" dvd. Check it out if you can. K.K. and Glenn play in unison all the time swaying back and forth. And you may not know, they are back with the orginal memebers meaining ROb Halford is back in the band. Worth going to a show.

John Frusciante - Inside of Emptiness
This is aldum 4 of the 6 albums in 6 months project he is doing right now.
O you'll love it
Here's the description from his site:
Inside of Emptiness - Bio by John
"Inside Of Emptiness was made in Los Angeles by Josh Klinghoffer, engineer Ryan Hewitt and myself. My favorite records at the time, in terms of the production, were White Light/White Heat by Velvet Underground and Lust For Life by Iggy Pop.
The first song is called "What I Saw" and it was written in New York. We distorted the fuck out everything on it. It is very dirty. The second song is called "The World's Edge" and it is a good example of why I think Josh Klinghoffer is the best drummer in the world. The third song is called "Inside A Break". It was written in Japan. This song contains a guitar solo by Josh that is being electronically bent out of tune.
The fourth song is called "A Firm Kick" and continues my series of A songs ("A Doubt", "A Corner"). It contains a noisy guitar solo that I did by beating the fuck out of my guitar. "Look On" was written in Paris, France and is a look back at the 70's and long guitar solos.
"Emptiness" was inspired by the little known group Empire. They were an offshoot of Gen X and they made brilliant original music that was completely ignored by the public (how unusual!).
"Emptiness", "I'm Around" and "666" were all written while I was reading a biography about Aleister Crowley. Each of these three songs, in their own way, are the result of me thinking about him and his life.
"I'm Around" contains our first example of what I call joined guitars. Toward the end and in the second chorus Josh and I played intertwining Johnny Marr type guitar parts through the same amp which causes the two separate parts to be perceived by the ear as one part.
The title "666", aside from being the name Aleister Crowley often signed letters as, is also a reference to the chorus' three bars of six which are interjected into the otherwise 4/4 feel of the song (something that was unintentional and subconscious).
"Interior Two" was written the same day as "Inside A Break". It is inspired by early rock n' roll. I love that music and those types of lyrics and it is fun for me as a songwriter to juxtapose music that would have sounded current in 1958 with lyrics that go in surreal or nonsensical directions that didn't exist in music back then.
The last song is called "Scratches" and we think the Rolling Stones should buy it off us.
We are greatly indebted to the Rick James episode of Chapelle's show, the watching and quoting of which helped give this record a happy atmosphere.
Thank you for listening. More to come."
- John Frusciante
"Smile" Brian Wilson
Rollin' Back, what a beautiful, sometimes sad love song that explains the real power of that thing that pumps in my chest. That girl I've always loved, well Rollin Back lets me know it's one of those things that doesn't die, we'll cross paths on the next go round on this earth. I love this song.
...That Steam Engine, on the Bonnaroo 04 show, Ahhhhhhhhhhhh, ya know
Quote"Smile" Brian Wilson
Which version? The old "stolen" one that was lurking around, or the new one? I have the "stolen" one, and man, I dig it a lot.
Both of Pete Yorn's albums are getting a lot of play at my place. Quality stuff.
Daniel Lanois has released some stunning albums. Always try to listen to them every few days.
Plenty of Dashboard Confessional as well. So damn emotional. I know, I know...
Finally, Dylan. Lots of Dylan.
hey it's been a while!
Yeah, good call on 'Smile'. Sure worth to see live too, Brian has really collected some marvellous musicians around him, although he has to read his own lyrics off of some computer screen...
I hereby restate my demand. MMj should cover 'Do It Again by the Beach Boys!
And Billy, what's your favorite Dylan record? I kinda like 'Blood On The Tracks' best.
Chills,
Wow. Thank's quite a question. Given the huge number to chose from I have to say that Time Out Of Mind is propably my favourite. Tryin' To Get To Heaven and Not Dark Yet are just too beautiful for words. I'm also a fan of Freewheelin' and Bringin' It All Back Home.
I agree with you about Blood On The Tracks as well. Quality stuff.
Yeah, and To Make You Feel My Love! Another great song of Time Out Of Mind.
Do you own Live '66? That's some vicious rock 'n roll on the second disc. Especially Ballad Of A Thin Man.
Play it LOUD!
I do indeed own Live 66. The second disc is superb. I think my favourites are One Too Many Mornings and Like a Rolling Stone. After the shout of "Judas!" the way the band rip into the opening of Like a Rolling Stone always send shivers down my spine.
Do you have an other of the Bootleg Series? The Rolling Thunder one is also excellent. It's good to hear those songs rearranged and still played with such energy and feeling.
Yeah... Make You Feel My Love. It struck me as being really out of place on Time Out Of Mind. After all the really emotionally heavy songs about Dyaln dying he then just puts in this very nice ditty. Always struck me as being odd. Still a great song though.
Maybe I'll check out The Rolling Thunder Revue. If my budget allows it...

it's actually the new one--I switch between that and Pet Sounds :)
I saw Wilson (for free) on the Pet Sounds tour a few years ago. Great stuff...
I don't have either version of "Smile". Should I get the new one?
Ahhhhhh, well, yes. You should get the new one because then you're supporting Brian Wilson.
(I'll send you an email.)

I saw those guys on the Lollapalooza '92 Festival. They were on the second stage but they were louder than the main stage--wicked funny!
This week I am mostly listening to Less Than Jake.
Excellent live band.
VHS or Beta, Night on Fire...great record! must have!
John -
Did you read the pitchfork media review of their album?
Here's a taste:
So it's come to this. After spending their debut kicking out lengthy Daft Punk-style house jams, Louisville's VHS or BETA have moved on, like so many bands this year, to pillaging the dance-friendly template of late-80s Cure-- Night on Fire, their second outing, finds them window-dressing themselves in shades of black and purple. While the band's past is well-researched, but it smacks of microfiched headlines and yellowed Newsweeks. Their very name is a calculated allusion to the Reagan era, in the way it whimsically cites trends that those alive at the time understand as useless fads or outmoded technology that we're grateful to be rid of. Sadly, their music is everything the name implies-- a fuzzy fourth-generation bootleg of a bygone decade's pop culture trash.
The title track opens with a summary of what's to come. Limp guitar lines bounce against a studio-stiffened dance beat that'll become painfully familiar by album's end (hint: there's only one.) Jerky, lock-kneed basslines bottom out beneath faux-Anglo vocals, and merge with production-added noise-squalls. As the song builds toward a unifying chorus that pleads, "Put your hands together/ And we'll light this night/ Light this night on fire," the image conveyed is more of trash-can weenie roasts than the inter-city conflagration the album attempts to incite. These faceless angst-jams constitute the album's entire runtime, from the flame-out angularity of "The Melting Moon" to the watery dance-punk of "No Cabaret".
OUCH!
well, you gotta consider the source here. pitchfork rarely says anything nice about ANYONE (except MMJ). the cynicism over there is retarded. they can't find anything good in anything. it almost sounds like they're like fifteen years old, writing trashy journal entries instead of "journalism".
all of the posters here could out-write those folks by a country mile. i sincerely mean that.
In the recent Rolling Stone mag, they did have a few nice things to say about the band. They were listed as one of the bands to watch. They are a great band whether Pitchfork thinks so or not.The new album is way cool.Very fun stuff.

Quotehi lfish, How were Mercury Rev's new songs? And did they still play some golden oldies? I think they'll be openining for Nick Cave in Brussels. Looks like a fine evening coming up!
New songs were fine! Excellent sound, but old & familiar songs were much fun to listen to. Are you going to Nick cave?
I saw him once live on Pukkelpop and the seeds just blew me away. They have this huge wall of sound, you know... But I guess, he will be playing more songs of his latest album and those are more quiet.
i'm just looking for recommendations for music i've not heard yet. obviously, i'm into mmj. the type of music that piques my interest, especially lately, is alt-country with thick orchestration. the heavy reverb that mmj employs creates the deep sound that i also enjoy in "blacklisted" by neko case and "the trinity session" by the cowboy junkies. anything by nina nastasia is extraordinary, too. "sea change" by beck has found itself in my rotation, along with the ubiquitous "automatic for the people" by rem. others include nick drake, elbow, rufus wainwright, fiona apple, pink floyd, and the flaming lips. thanks.
the comment before about pitchfork's mediocre writing is dead-on. i've actually emailed the publication regarding a horrible review of the latest release by these arms are snakes. you can read the review on metacritic.com. the writer with last name of moore confuses convoluted writing with high-falutin writing. i have found fewer run-ons in freshman english classes and more parsimony in fourth grade creative writing classes. also, hardly a single noun, adjective, or verb is not modified by an adjective or adverb. reading pitchfork's reviews is work.

(Okay, so I was sneaky and looked at some of your other mixes. I didn't even know there was a website for that kind of thing - very cool. And, wow. It's Hard to Watch Her. Dude. I'm teary. You put Mark Mothersbaugh on there! along with many others. How fun is that?)
I am a big fan of "art of the mix"- it's a fun way to kill time when I'm not on this message board. And if you want the perfect mix, but you are lacking inspiration, try this one: http://www.tinymixtapes.com/amg/

Agreed tundra.
Now moved on to All Good Things, the Jerry Garcia studio sessions box set. Staggering.
Currently, I am walking with (musical) giants.
Word, indeedie.
If it's musical giants you want, go buy "Festival Express" (discussed in other forums) I just saw it yesterday, and the scene where Rick Danko, Janis Joplin, Jerry Garcia, and Bob Weir jam on "Ain't No More Cane" (on a train, completely bombed out of their minds) is not to be missed.
Best Quote goes to Jerry: "Janis, I've loved you since the day I saw you."
Lately Ben Harper and The Innocent Criminals "Live From Mars" is in totally heavy rotation in my player--forgot how much I love this (ESPECIALLY disc 1!) :D
Testament- Practice What You Preach
The Cure- Disintigration (sp?)
Chris Issak- Baja Sessions
Found a singer/songwriter named Kathryn Williams... Nice sunday morning music. And some Will Oldham stuff.
Sun Kil Moon....Ghosts of the Great Highway.
Idlewild: The Remote Part

A fantastic new tribute album. I thoroughly recommend it :D
Sun Kil Moon is now played out for me, but was in my player for about 6 months straight. Can't say enough about Kozelek's songwriting and singing. Almost as good as Jim.
It is winter here in Mass, and a lot of rain and snow music has been appropriate. Thus, have had the following playin lately:
Jay Farrar- Stone, Stell and Petals
Modest Mouse-Moon and Antarctica
Iron and Wine-the latest album, put the older one away
Last but not least, Red House Painters, Old Ramon.
Peace everyone. Anxiously awaiting some new Jacket material.

-Iron & Wine (latest)
-older M Ward records
-waiting impatiently for new live Magnolia Electric Co./Songs Ohia!!!!!!!!!!
hey, coltrane, what album would you recommend of M. Ward's if you could only choose one. I plan to buy just one, so point me in the right direction. I like his stuff, but I think one album will suffice. Appreciate it.
well, I'd have to say the latest, "Transfiguration of Vincent." It's his most complete. "end of amnesia" is great, and should be next. the first record is out of print, i think. I got a copy at one of the shows.....and he's got a new one comin' out some.
but start with 'Transfiguration of Vincent." you shan't be disappointed!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would have to respectfully disagree and reverse your order (mostly because I LOVE O'Brien's Nocturne) ;)
ok. i'll just get both then. thanks. peace.
Some North Mississipi Allstars have been rockin my ears the last couple of hours, followed by the most gnarly War Begun I've heard live, Headliners MH, 9.27.03, By My Car, Honest Man, Then Rollin' Back, Fa Sho
Newer stuff...I've been listening to Rilo Kiley and Rufus Wainwright lately...Older stuff...there's "Houses of The Holy," which never leaves my car (I can't wait until sxsw because Robert Plant is the keynote speaker), The Cure, and Rusted Root.

Thats pretty neat. :)
EC, you made it onto the mix. :)
I've been listening to "A ghost is born" quite a bit as well. I also got "Being there" in the last week and it's great.
I have TONS of new music to listen to at some point this weekend.
EC sent several CDs to me that I've scanned through and I also got the live shows that were recorded for the Drive-By Truckers re-release CD parties...
If I ever make it through this crazy work schedule that I have going on, I am going to smoke a special cigarette, lie on my bed with my new headphones on, and listen to some Wilco. And I also want to listen to the stuff that you sent to me, wiggs.

M. Ward: Transfiguration of Vincent
Iron and Wine: Our Endless Numbered Days
John Cale: The Island Years

Yeah Come Closer, great song, I think we all agree.
Mmm, to stay on the MMJ subject: Phone Went West live somewhere in Chicago 2003, blistering version!
And some of these songs always make my day...
Bob Dylan: The Man In Me
Todd Rundgren: I Saw The Light
Big Star: Slut
Roy Orbison: In Dreams !!!
GBV: Motor Away
Misfits: Last Caress
Wilco: Student Loan Stereo
Regarding "A Ghost is Born"
It's a great record.
However, did you know (and if it's been mentioned on the sight before please forgive me) that you can play A Ghost is Born while viewing the DVD of The Passion of the Christ and it plays like a sound track. For example: When Tweedy is saying "When the devil came, he was not red. He was chrooooome and he said", that's when the devil appears in the movie. There are numerous other examples. Just a freaky thing. Again, if this has been discussed, consider me late to the game.
Rock on!
PS - whoever discoverd this has entirely too much time on their hands.
Quotecome closer. again! :)
You have no idea how curious I am to hear this song, now. Every time I go to a damn record store, they don't have it, but they always promise they're gonna get it soon, because they can't keep the My Morning Jacket records in the store, they're just flying out of there.
Well maybe if you fucking bought more than one every three months...
(whoops, where did that come from? :) much better.)
the forum is theraputic, eh? ;D
NOt a big fan of Bright Eyes but i've been enjoying his latest, I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning. Good songs and great guests!
Agreed, I really like the new Bright Eyes album. It doesn't hurt that Jim sings on the best song of the record. Although "Ode to Joy" is awesome as well.
QuoteAgreed, I really like the new Bright Eyes album. It doesn't hurt that Jim sings on the best song of the record. Although "Ode to Joy" is awesome as well.
Is Ode to Joy based off of the Schiller poem in Beethoven's 9th? Has anyone ever read that? I have an English translation kicking around. Okay, that's the 2nd Beethoven's 9th reference in 24 hours. I think I'm supposed to listen to that today. I have a wicked version.
Um. Yes. Right now I am listening to CBC radio.
I have to agree with the new Bright Eyes album. Was never a big fan before, but after listening to "I'm Wide Awake, its Morning" and seeing him perform on Austin City Limits,I've changed my feelings toward him.The new disc is pretty good and having Jim James and Emmy Lou Harris sing backup only enhances the songs quality.

Have I entered Heaven and nobody told me? Damn me that I didn't know this yesterday when I went to the MF record store (I'm trying not to say the full MF as much, because it's trashy). Oh well. Guess I'll have to go tomorrow. :)

I have never been able to get into Bruce Cockburn. What's the secret?
he may be one of those artists you either like tons or could care less about. I personally enjoy the introspection in his songs. I also like the gritty, rootsy sound of the music. Check out "Live on My Mind" off Charity of Night, what a great tribute to a love gone by.
Doesn't Cockburn have a sung that's either about doing something with a chainsaw or that involves atom bombs, or something? Or a rocket, maybe? ???
If he does, then I know one song by him and I like it very much. :D

Richard Thompson: "Action Packed--The Best of The Capitol Years" yummy :)
Powderfinger - Vulture Street

Never heard of Richard Thompson, what does he sound like?
The Killers. "Hot Fuss".
This requires explanation. At Ian Tyson, one of my Dad's friends brought his 16 year old son, and I like to think that I know a thing or two about music, but I knew NOTHING of what this kid was talking about. He said he was into "emo", which I'd heard about but never understood. I asked him what his favourite "emo" record was, and he said Hot Fuss. So I told him I'd get it, if he got one or two of mine: I gave him two records to get (Conor's I'm Wide Awake, and "At Dawn" - the Universally appealing record).
Isn't Conor supposed to be kind of "emo" ish?
So that's how I got an emo record. I can dig it. It reminds me of a lot of music. The Cult? The Cure? Depeche Mode? The Strokes?
QuoteNever heard of Richard Thompson, what does he sound like?
He was a founding member of Fairport Convention which recorded folk/rock type music. He is an excellent guitarist and accomplished songwriter. Check him out fer sure ;)
Cool, will do! Thanks man.
I don't understand any of it anymore. I listen to all types and it comes down to Rock for me. Southern Rock, Classic Rock, Rock, whatever. All this other crap is for the birds. Hot Fuss is a great album though. However, synthesizers are for dudes named Pogo who where eyeliner. Therefore, Killers lose street cred a bit. Gimme the goods, MMJ, now that's rock, BRMC, they rock, Queens of the SA, they are pretty cool. I don't want my bands wearing makeup unless they are named David Bowie, Peter Gabriel, or Kiss. As for emo, grind core, crap core, or anything else, none of it makes sense top me and the more these bands try to define it the more I get disinterested. Later dudes. MMJ rules!
Okay. I hear you. I do.
But I think synthesizers are okay.

Steve Vai "Real Illusions: Reflections" my pre-order copy just came in the mail today :) :) :)
Vai's cool. The end of that movie Cross Roads with the Karate Kid rocked. His stuff with David Lee Roth was pretty cool to. Especially skyscraper.
check him out with his O-L-D band Alcatrazz--he plays a smokin' piece of guitar on "God Blessed Video"--old hair metal yaaaaar!

Found something very cool in a record store yesterday. Stevie Ray Vaughn, A Tale Untold. It has a fifteen minute version of "Life Without You" with no singing just SRV going crazy. He plays the Hendrix tune (or at least I think its a Hendrix tune) "Come On". Then it has a bunch of Jam sessions in between. That guy rocks. Also snagged a Dylan DVD from the early 70s called the Thunder something Revue. Was too busy tearing open the package to look at what it was called. Dylan plays the slide version of Shelter from the Storm. Its pretty amazing, I'll post the real name of the DVD when I remember it. Later.

I don't have the EP, but I got the new Andrew Bird ("The Mysterious Production of Eggs") and the new M.Ward album last week. They are both fantastic, and actually compliment each other very well.
If you haven't already, do yourself a favor and get Andrew Bird's "The Swimming Hour". I know I've said it here before, but that one is brilliant. It's still my favorite by him, by far.
I've been preaching that particular gospel for a long time.
I still can't stop listening to Transfiguration of Venus. (heh, that's for you, Riny, and anyone who was particularly astute yesterday.) I think I've had it in my possession for less than 24 hours, and I've probably put it on 8 times. My roommate is crazy about it, too.
And I am seriously holding myself back from buying the new record until Sunday. If you buy the record at the show, the artist gets a better percentage, is that right? (I hope so. Otherwise, this is all very pointless, this saintly rationing that I'm doing.)
And the drumming from Run Thru has been in my head all day, along with the keyboards. There are some drumming bits in that song (the cymbal parts) that are so fucking great and perfect. The drumming in that song is masterful. MASTERFUL. The whole damn song is sexcellent.

It's really pretty and lovely. My roommate picked it up at Soundscapes because they were playing it.
I just looked them (him?) up at sixorgansofadmittance.com, and they (he) is/are going on tour soon... With Joanna Newsom in Europe. How nice!
Here's a weird thing. I haven't listened to MMJ in awhile, and I haven't been here in awhile (can't hardly wait for the new album to come out). As soon as I did sign back on this forum and read a couple of posts, I start humming "And I want it...so...bad...it's the first thing, I see when I wake"
Was a the mall the other day, picked up The Clash "London Calling" on vinyl, been listening to that pretty steady.
This morning I listened to my friend Mark Vogelsang's demo record. I don't think any of you know him, but I hope that you will one day. It's incredibly beautiful. It's so musical, and lyrically poignant. Lots of layers and pretty melodies, and sad underlyings, but not the kind of sad that's "in your face" or accusatory. Just a facet of the writer's emotion, I guess.
(He did the added instrumentation to one of my songs that some of you might have heard.)
Of all the people I know, Mark should tour around the world, and when he does, I will let you all know about it. Because you will love it. :)
is that Doves new album any good. hurd someclips, were ok? i have been listening to disc 3 of the Low bax set for a while now. really relaxing, and my shrink says i need to relax. wish Kozelek would put out somehting new, that always relaxes me. favorite on the Low disc is cover of Blue-Eyed Devil originally done by of all bands, Soul coughing. great song when interpreted by such a band as Low. Back to Me - Kathleen Edwards new record.
I like it. I like her. She's pretty plain-spoken, and her songs appeal to me on a lot of levels. I also really like her voice - I think it's honest, and she's not afraid to sound the way she sounds, which I like.
But here's my thing. I don't know why she chose the song that she did to bring Jim on. You can't even hardly hear him - you certainly can't really tell it's him. Which is fine, and who knows why that choice was made. But then there's this song called "Away", and I think it would've been a really wicked choice for a duet. There isn't so much instrumentation, so you could actually hear the voices.
That's just my opinion, and I understand that decisions like this sometimes have more to do with other things - and maybe they don't - maybe that was the song, and it was executed as it was meant to be. I just don't get it. It's not a bad song or anything, and it sounds good.
It's like, let's say you got Emmylou Harris to come and sing with you (for me, Jim is the boy Emmylou Harris) - wouldn't you want to HEAR her?
Okay. I'll stop. It's a good record, though. Kathleen Edwards has a cool way of combining a bunch of sounds. And the guitar is pretty cool.
That's my story.
Todd Snider - East Nashville Skyline
Great album. Great Songs. Great storytelling.
QuoteTodd Snider - East Nashville Skyline
Great album. Great Songs. Great storytelling.
Did hc or me ever tell you about the guy who used to pretend that a Todd Snider song was his own?
This is funny. Waaaay back in the day, when I was first starting to play guitar in front of people, we used to go to this open mic night that was hosted by Gowan's little brother. Not kidding.
Anyhow, there was this guy, and he was a pretty cool guy. Sang kind of political songs, and he could play guitar like a mother (damn my thinking that I'm swearing too much these days). He also wore black converse high tops, and he's in his forties, so I thought that was cool.
So one song he always used to sing was called All Right Guy. And it was a hit. And I always thought it was his own song - everybody always asked him to play it.
So one day, hellaciousc sends me this mixed cd with his favourite Todd Snider song. And it's the same song. And I laugh about it, it's kind of funny.
So THEN, recently, hc asks me about this bar, and if I ever go to it, and if I've ever heard this guy sing there. It's the guy. The same damn guy.
Weird little world, eh?
p.s. for those who don't know, hc lives in Virginia, and I live in Toronto. :)
Damn, That it strange. :)

E.C I dont advocate copying in anyway...especially when the band are friends but i'll do you a copy if you like...fantastic English country which is sometimes very witty but not in a comical way..hard to explain. Many a beautiful song on this album, especially the gorgeous track "John Belushi" been going to see them for a couple of years now..they have supported the likes of the supreme "Shins" and one of my other favourite bands "Richmond Fontaine".Steve the singer is a funny bloke and they all take part in this music business as a bit of fun..they all have day jobs. Anyway drop us an e-mail and send me your address and i'll pop you a copy in the post...I think of it as a way of promoting the band in the States, as i am pretty sure it is not released that side of the pond. Anyway if your interested let me know?...also dont forget them vocals when the new tribute album gets under way. Have a fun weekend y'all :)

Old school Nick Cave!
Just discovered his amazing song called City Of Refuge, it's on Tender Prey. Man that's intense... I gotta buy me that album.
Also some stuff from his new b-sides collection, including an amuzing acoustic version of City Of Refuge.
Apparently it's based on an old Blind Willie McTell song, can anyone help me out with this?
'You Better Run, To The City Of Refuge!'
Thanks, Chills, for the reminder that I own some old Nick Cave albums. I never really gave them a chance but there are a couple of songs I know I love. One is called "The Singer (A.K.A. The Folksinger)", from Kicking Against The Pricks. I think that's an all covers album, since I recognize songs by Hendrix, Elvis, Johnny Cash, The Velvet Underground and others. They're kind of hit or miss but I love "The Singer". He apparently made an album called Murder Ballads about...well, murder ballads. If one isn't offended by the lyrical content there is a great song on there called "Knoxville Girl". Nice gee-tar on that one. Heck, I think I'll go listen to it right now. G'bye!
I love Knoxville Girl. It's so spooky and weird, and the first time you hear it, you're like "is this a joke?" I especially like the Louvin Brothers version, because they're so... chipper, and the song is so morbid. It's an interesting duality.
I'm still listening to Transistor Radio constantly (I find something new each time - I'm using my headphones, plus my friend pointed out some of his recording techniques, so now I'm trying to listen to see if I can figure that kind of thing out. It's actually very interesting.) Plus Joanna Newsom. All the time. Because, wow. She makes you want to run around.
Andrew Bird - Mysterious Production of Eggs, It's Flawless, a certifiable Masterpiece, this album and M. Ward's Transistor Radio are two instant classics.
Re: Knoxville Girl...
Mark Lanegan sings a semi-similar "murder ballad" called Little Sadie and it's a bit of alright, I tell you what. He's up there with James James on my list of "singers who, when I'm pissed, I wish I sounded like". He also did a frickin' sweet version of She's Not For You by Willie Nelson, I must say. And his first solo album kind of butters my toast as well.
So what's with these great singers covering old songs about murder, anyway? Was there a time when "I bonked her on the head and threw her into the river" was an everyday lyric?
Yeah, it's weird... but I think those are very traditional old songs. Like old, old. In fact, they might have begun a REALLY long time ago in England/Scotland/Ireland and were carried over, words changed, stories changed... But all those songs about being in the pines, and killing people... To me they're way more about fable than reality. Like the Brothers Grimm or other legends that lean to the side of creepy. Haunting, that's more the word. And the music (aside from how the Louvin Brothers sing 'em) tends to match the mood, which is very cool. You know that originally, the story comes from somewhere (like all those train songs about John Henry) - they continue the tradition of verbal/musical/oral storytelling, but keep it within the confines of a certain melody.
I'm totally making that up, but that's how I've always thought about all of it in my head. People change the songs to match their own history, and thus it continues...
i have compiled a cd. been listening to it non-stop recently. the tracklisting is as follows (in case anyone cares):

Anyone who's seen JBT, how do the albums compare to their live sound? I don't have any of their albums yet, but I will surely be adding to my collection.

Oh that's so wicked! And WEIRD!! I was just talking about how much I love them yesterday when somebody put on a really, really old mixed cd that I made with "Milk" on it. I love Penguin Cafe Orchestra! Yay!
"Pieces of the Sky" by Emmylou Harris. An old favourite, but one I haven't listened to in a while. It's fun to listen to the production of it. They sure did make some nice music in the 70s.
Holy shite! That's the best Emmylou Harris album EVER! I've got that on vinyl at the house, and every once in a while, I'll put it on and waltz around the house with my daughter.
QuoteHoly shite! ÊThat's the best Emmylou Harris album EVER! ÊI've got that on vinyl at the house, and every once in a while, I'll put it on and waltz around the house with my daughter.
HA! How lovely! (Do you get teary when Boulder to Birmingham comes on? I just keep thinking about how hard it must have been for her at that time. She's suddenly really popular and thrust into that Nashville world, and Gram's dead, and it must've been really weird. Especially singing Sleepless Nights, too. Man.)
Plus, Bottle Let Me Down is one of the best songs. Ever.
Did Emmylou ever sing it with Merle? Anybody know?
Emmylou Harris is just effin' amazing. Blue Kentucky Girl is a great album (and has Even Cowgirls Get The Blues on it as a plus). She's quite possibly my favorite female singer (I know that's sexist) ever. Right up there with Rickie Lee Jones; Joni Mitchell; Melanie; and Grace Slick (circa "We Built This City (On Rock and Roll)"...I keed.
What am I listening to right now? The Postal Service.
That's not really sexist.. Or at least, not in a bad way. According to me, anyhow.
It's also very, very true. She is totally my favourite. Possibly including the boys. (If I had to pick one of each, Jim is my favourite boy singer.) If they did a duet together, I don't know if my ears could handle it.

EC, I've never (unfortunately) seen Radiohead live either... I just have the live disc which is great. I've seen Pink Floyd who they are always compared to, and I've seen Elbow, their "favorite band," but missing the link!
Radiohead live is sweet. I'm not the biggest fan, but I saw them at Werchter festival two years ago and was really impressed. They are a very solid live band.

My "Instant Live" discs from the Black Crows show I was just at a half hour ago here in Knoxville. "Instant Live" is so great. ;D.......and Chris Robinson is ON THE NEXT LEVEL.
So how does that sound?
Quality-wise?
I've heard that they are puttin' on some smokin' shows.
Quality wise, I say Top Notch and I've heard quite a few live recordings. They are indeed putting on a great show, they had me shakin it like a salt shaker the whole night. Some long mind blowing jams. Sweet light show with a shit load of candles. Great Crowd, I'm glad I decided to go at the last second. I got a ticket for 20 bucks from a guy outside. Then proceded to pay 25 for the cd's. I couldn't resist.
I just checked out the instantlive site and it looks like they are only doing a limited # of discs. Do you think that they will allow trading of the shows after they are out. I looked at "buy past shows" and didn't actually see a "buy" option for any BC shows.
:-/
e-mail coming Wiggum. ;D
Word! I'll check back after I grab a beverage from the kitchen.
:)
I think this link will work if anyone out there wants to buy a live Black Crows Show.

That's so cool. They should do that with shows for folks who can't be there... Do a live internet broadcast or something, and you pay a small fee. Especially if bands play in places you can't get to. :)
(they probably already do that, don't they.)
Hey Megan, The Black Crows covered "Knoxville Girl" last night.
QuoteHey Megan, The Black Crows covered "Knoxville Girl" last night.
They did? That's very cool. Was it good?
Do you get sick of hearing Knoxville girl? ;) Like, do a lot of bands cover it when they come into town? I know that I would want to.

Never heard the song in my life. Chris did it acapella, in the middle of Thorn In My Pride, and I instantly thought of you.

Because you want to knock me down and kill me? ;)
(What'd you think of it? It's on the creepy side... There's a Nick Cave version that I've never heard, but you should dig around and listen to the Louvin Brothers sing it. It's on Tragic Songs of Life. Which is one of my favourite record titles of all time. [Another one is Satan is Real, also by them.]) :)
currently playing...jackshit. my wife packed EVERYTHING. we're not moving till the FIFTEENTH. although i did get a chance to listen to Green Day's American Idiot album at a friend's house the other day. i know i'm kinda late on this one, but that's a great fuckin album. specially "gimme novacaine."

I feel bad for downloading this but I had already pre ordered it and refused to wait until 5/24. I really wish MMJ would bring these guys out on tour with them sometime. Lucero is heading out on a tour with the Honaray Title and Cory Branan that is sure to please.
Plank10 you are so right about Lucero. They are a great band and they are coming back to Louisville at Uncle Pleasants on the 27 of May.We also got the fabulous Drive By Truckers at Headliners May 20th.
I can't believe it's been over a year since I saw the DBTs. I caught a couple of Jason's solo shows last year, but the last time I saw the full band was in March of 2004.
I'm gonna see them in Huntsville within a week of seeing MMJ. That's a lot or ROCK for one week.

Just picked up the new Iron and Wine "Woman King EP", its pretty rockin.
Howdy. I'm new to these parts.
Fell in love with MMJ about six months ago.

Red House Painters - Songs for a Blue Guitar
Grateful Dead - assorted live stuff
Ditty Bops - live at the Independent in SF 3/05
Palace Brothers - Days in the Wake

I was thinking about going to Kaboom. It sounds like a lot of fun. I've heard the fireworks are spectacular. I'm actually seeing JBT at the Great American Music Hall the very next day. I don't know anyone who will be taping the show though. You should check out the live music archive, there are over 70 shows on that site. I downloaded the show I've been listenting to from the JBT website. There are a bunch there too.

That's a seriously great album. It's kind of overshadowed by the others, but man, 'Pretty Girls Make Graves' is my favorite Smiths song ever.

What a coincidence!
By the way, anyone else agree about what an amazing guitarist Johnn Marr is? It's unlike anyone else I know, he's one of the few guitarists that really has his own style. It's subtle but rocking at the same time. Like Johnny Quaids guitar lines on The Way That He Sings!
Just listen to Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me. That just almost transcends the instrument if you know what I mean... Wish all those fancy thousand notes a minute guitarists would listen to that! Except Kirk Hammett, he should go back to playing thunderous three-minute solos ;D

anything mmj
you know, i can't say that i've found anything lately that particularly piques my interest.
Goosemeister,
We had some people over for a cookout on the patio last night and I was playing "Sea Change" My favorite Beck album and one of my favorite albums period. I also played Warren Haynes Live @ Bonnaroo 2004, both records were perfect for the occasion. Also been lisenting to a bunch of Drive By Truckers lately and listened to my M.Ward Transistor Radio record the other night it's a masterpiece.
i was able to catch m. ward when he opened for mmj in new york last summer. i did enjoy some of his stuff, but i can't say that i was spellbound. mmj's performance, the only one i've been fortunate enough to see/hear, was amazing. they really give everything, and they sound extremely good live. i'm probably preaching to the choir. nonetheless, part of me was worried that live wouldn't sound great, considering the amount of reverb that mmj employs. i saw two videos of james' solos that this site offered (offers still?), and i knew that he had the ability to shine in person, though. you know that a band is special when they sound great, if not better, live.
oh... the only thing of warren haynes that i have is a download a song featuring ray lamontagne. i think that the recording is from bonnaroo. i like ray lamontagne, but i'd rather just hear a stripped down recording than some backing and overthought production. part of me worries that he could become overproduced in his next album. i don't think his voice and style fits anything more than simple and stark arrangements. boy, i feel selfish for making that statement. who am i to say what an artist should or should not do?
i agree with what you think about "sea change." beck has always shown a propensity for introspective music, so it wasn't a surprise to see what could be considered beck's concept album.

I'm really digging this record right now, I absolutly loved thier set at Bonnaroo. I think they got the right heart and sentiment.
Here's what was on rotation in the car for the past two odd weeks:
M. Ward - Transfiguration of Vincent (will NEVER tire of this)
M. Ward - Transistor Radio (also hugely in love with)
M. Ward - End of Amnesia (picked up at Ear X-tacy)
Joanna Newsom - Mild Eyed Mender (Riny called her an angel. All the boys love her. She is really quite fucking incredible.)
Rilo Kiley - whichever the new one is - just got it. I really loved their set at Bonnaroo, but I fear this record will have to grow on me a little.
Buffalo Springfield - mostly previously unreleased recordings of songs that we know.
MMJ - Everything, but mostly It Still Moves because it is in my top three driving records of all times.
Mark Vogelsang - you've heard me speak of him before
Beck - Geurro (I am in love with this man. Well, I was until I heard he might be a scientologist. Then I got a little disappointed.)
I can't remember what else. The heaviest rotation was M Ward and My Morning Jacket, mostly because I love to sing when I'm driving, and I have a supremely awesome and patient best gal friend. :)

I'm listening to the new one. I didn't know him at all, but someone recommended it. Some of the songs bug me a bit, some of it I'm just not into. Thanks, and the thank God page is hilarious, you have to get over that... By the way one of my fav albums of all time is What's Going On by Marvin Gaye. There's a song on there that's called God Is Love ::) But hey he could sing the telephone book and I would be listening!

MMM yeah, it's a little low on tempo changes. Take it in in small doses.
I usually skip to the same great songs, The Warming Sun, Now It's On, El Camino's, Yeah Is What We Had and Lost On Yer Merry Way.
Pretty good actually, but lacks the complete brilliance of a song like "Everything Beautiful Is Far Away".
As to the live stuff, man, the Sophtware Slump tour was special. You really felt that rare magical bond between audience and band that you just can't explain.
On the last tour they ended with He's Simple, He's Dumb, He's The Pilot. They started it and just before the "i believe they want you to give in" part they stopped and Jason said: this song and this tour are dedicated to mr Elliot Smith. followed by a great applause and the last awesome part of the song.
Pretty much best concert memory ever.
