Isn't he great. I just keep playing Transfiguration Of Vincent, what a magnificent album that is.
Anyone know when his new album will be come out?
And is he any popular in the usa? His records are NOWHERE to be found here, a real disgrace.
yes he is great. I'm more partial to The End Of Amnesia (esp. O'Brien's Nocturne). He is readily available at most US music stores
Yeah I absolutely love O'Brien/O'Brien's nocturne too.
His voice i just magical on that track, and I love the guitar sound, truly unique...
Hey I'm listening to it right now, it sounds great on my little computer boxes.
'That's the story of how O'Brien blew my mind'
MMM... Nice
heh that's funny your user name is Chills and when I read that quote from O'Brien's Nocturne I got the Chills :D
m. ward is truly great, he won me over big time when i saw him with jim and conor oberst. i believe his new album comes out in feb.
They reviewed it on the pitchfork website today. I think they gave it an 8.2.
My own post just made me laugh. ;D They gave Vhs or Beta a 4.2. I think the Mars Volta got a 0.2 or something. I still like visiting that site. The reviews can be annoying at times but I've learned about alot of music from that site.
I'm really hoping that there will be a record for sale at his show next Sunday night!!!
the new record is out on Tuesday, Feb. 22nd!!!!!!!!!!!
i can't wait to see him in San Diego at the Casbah...it's a real small place. Very intimate--the stage is barely raised off the floor, so it's like they're playing just for you.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Allright, Feb. 22! Hope it comes out in Europe too.
It's damn cool he gets a lot of respect here.
Enjoy your shows!
This guy is The Man!!! Listening to Transistor Radio at the moment (thanks OM), track 2 finished a few songs ago as 'Fuel for Fire' just passed...Jimmy James represents wonderfully here!. Everyone pick this album up, Matt and Jim would kick any barbershop quartets ass, and that's just the half of it!!! :o
p.s. also get End of Amnesia & Transfiguration of Vincent.
I picked this up at Ear-X-Tacy on Friday. It was on sale, even. Fantastic.
Also fantastic and also purchased on Friday at Ear-X-Tacy was Andrew Bird's new one. I've been a big fan of his ever since the Squirrel Nut Zippers days, and his solo releases have been consistently fantastic. Esp. "The Swimming Hour".
Cool cool cool! I used to totally love the Squirrel Nut Zippers. (For some reason Arcade Fire reminds me of them, but I have NO idea why.)
It looks like I have to put my snowshoes on (we just got dumped with about half a foot overnight - just when it was melting!) and go to the good music store.
Thanks for that, jacksoncooper.
can't wait to hear it.
it's out in europe TODAY
mine's in the mail from jersey so it should get here soon.
M. Ward is da shit.
He's got a glowing review over at Interview Magazine (Andy Warhol's rag) which is sadly not online. (the magazine, not the review)...
Crap, I keep forgetting to get my ticket. Must do that right now.
(I wonder if he'll have buttons... I love buttons...)
me like shirts :P
Quoteme like shirts :P
I like shirts, too.
My favourite thing was a George Jones hat that I bought at his last concert here. But the damn moths ruined it.
Crap, I forgot to write about how excited I am for the show on Sunday. The ticket doesn't say who's opening... Anyone know?
Plus, the ticket was only $10! What is that? He better not be starving. Maybe I'll take him some cookies. Ten bucks? That just seems wrong. I know it's nice and all, and we can all afford it, but shows are really expensive to put on, especially touring ones. Anyhow, I won't worry, I'm sure he's all right.
I also wanted to say that listening to Transfiguration of Vincent tonight... It's just so incredibly beautiful and sad and heartfelt. Some of the lyrics just made me stop in my tracks. Within the first, literally, three seconds, I said "Holy shit, I am going to love this." And my roommate (who is painting the door frames right now), said "Yeah." And then when it finished, we both just kind of sat, and swam around in the beautiful thing we'd just heard.
And, you know, it's unfair to put on this new other record after that one, because it will never be as good.
EC--this your first M Ward show? if so yer gonna love it!!! Have fun, drink mass quantities ;D
QuoteEC--this your first M Ward show? if so yer gonna love it!!! Have fun, drink mass quantities ;D
Oh, if I haaaave to, okay. But I'll blame you on Monday morning!
(It depends, though. When I know shows are going to be really good, and I suspect this will be, I don't like to drink tooooo much, because I actually want to enjoy [read: remember] the show.)
There's no tellin' what'll happen after, though...
Quote
[read: remember] the show.)
gotcha ;) he is a fairly subtle artist and being inebriated may affect your fond memories
You're a stowaway on a boxcar. All you have is a cheap guitar, a bottle of whiskey, and an old beat up radio. Its dusk in august, and as you look out across the expansive countryside, your radio sputters to a start. As you fiddle with the knobs, a scruffy young vagrant wearing a straw hat steps out of the shadows and sits beside you. You tell yourself he probably isn't real. The young vagabond asks for your guitar. He's real. You look at the whiskey bottle, and then at the young man, and pinch yourself to make sure you aren't dreaming. As you prepare to bash the bottle over the vagabonds head and take his belongings, a familiar tune emerges from the radio and mixes gently with the clatter of the railroad tracks. Maybe it's the humidity, maybe the loneliness, maybe even the radio, regardless, you have a change of heart, and hand over the guitar. He begins to strum along and croon softly. You've made the right decision, it's the prettiest thing you've ever heard. He tips his hat slightly and says his name is M. Ward.
yup, that about sums it up!
Yayyyy! That was terrific. The perfect thing to read before bed. :)
I picked up Transistor Radio on Vinyl last night. It's an amazingly recorded album. During "Lonesome Fuel For Fire" I was thinking "these are the best recorded Vocals on any album anywhere" and that was before Jim's voice came in, at which point I declared "Fuel For Fire" a certifiable masterpiece!
I loved "4 Hours in Washington" it reminded be of that Johnny Cash song "24hrs to go" and a little bit of the first track on Bright Eyes "I'm Wide Awake" (the one Jim sings on)
I was really suprised Chan Marshall didn't make an apperance on this album.
EC--- Scout Niblet is opening for M. here in San Diego next month....maybe she's with him the whole tour. She's very cool. Played on the self titled Magnolia Elecrtic Co. record...!

Cool - thanks! I shall report back...
I am not going to say anything about this. Just watch it. (Sorry if you've seen it already - but you're probably increasing your life span, as well as your happiness level, by watching it again.)
http://lifesrichpageant.typepad.com/lifes_rich_pageant/files/MOV02394.MPG
Sucky quality in that it's small, but it gets the achievement and "holy shit" award just on the basis of what it is a recording of.
:)
Now I can't wait even more.
p.s. Not sure about this person's bandwidth issues, but I would bet it's nicer if you right click and "save as".
AWWWWWW FUCK! my favorite piece, M backed by MMJ on his fuckin' best song! I am jonsesing so fuckin bad
Holy fuck.
I can't even think straight. (RyanCorpse were you there? I was looking at forearms, but couldn't find any MMJ skeletons...)
Okay, before I get going, NO MERCH. No cds, no buttons, no tshirts, no nothin'. So I waited for no reason. Ah well. I can deal.
What an incredible experience.
Throughout the show he kept saying "I'm gonna be back real soon with a big band."
And I kept thinking "Oh my god, Riny wasn't so cryptic after all, and fanatic is right!"
BUT, I went up and thanked him as he was loading up his gear, and I asked him which band he was coming back with, and it is not My Morning Jacket. He'll be playing Lee's Palace (which is WICKED), for those of you who know it, in April. Hoooooraaaaaayyy!!
What a beautiful show.
Okay, I can't really articulate well right now. I'm still in it.
i was there. i was the gentleman sitting on the stage to the right of m.ward. it was a great show. had fun.
did he do "Let's Dance" and O'Brien's Nocturne"?
Quotedid he do "Let's Dance" and O'Brien's Nocturne"?
Yep. He did a lot of songs from Vincent, actually.
He's a pretty dynamic performer, as well - kind of interesting to watch him move all over the stage.
Ryan, our right, or M. Ward's right? If you were sitting on the stage, then I think I saw you.
to m. wards right. i have relly dorky glasses. black hair.
Okay. I think I saw you. :)
(I don't remember dorky glasses, though.)
What'd you think of the opening band?
hey guys here's a memory jogger for ya that I took at one of the JJ/MW/BE collaboration shows (apologies to Riny in advance if I fuck this up):

its in the post
the opening band was good. sad though they have all those problems.
Quotethe opening band was good. sad though they have all those problems.
Yeah - it must've been extremely frustrating for them. (I missed the first little bit when they came out, so I didn't catch who they were - do you remember/know?)
I'm glad that he's coming back in April. That'll be really wicked.
i'm sorry i don't . i would like to see m. ward with a full band again for sure.
EC, any other shows you looking forward to?
QuoteEC, any other shows you looking forward to?
Well, I'm looking forward to the big My Morning Jacket tour. There are no dates on the shows page, and I KNOW NOTHING, but I'm still looking forward to it. :)
Steve Earle is playing Friday. I don't have a ticket, but if I can't get one tomorrow, I'm going to try and figure it out.
A good friend pointed out that Billie Joe Shaver is coming in August, and if I'm in town, I will definitely see it.
I can't wait to see M. Ward again in April. I love Lee's Palace - that place holds a lot of good memories for me. (A boyfriend in highschool used to play there, and I'd sneak in by us saying that I was "crew". heh.)
Loretta Lynn is playing in Niagara stupid Falls in two weekends, and I'm going to try and see that show. But I have my doubts that I can make it.
I saw one of the guys from The Wayne Omaha on the streetcar today, and thought that I would really love to see them again soon.
There's a VERY fun Bob Wills tribute night at Lula on Sunday with lots of cool folks. My Uncle is the drummer for the band that is hosting, but he's going on tour with another band, so he won't be there. I'm working the bar that night, so that's cool. (ie don't have to pay)
I'm seeing the McGarrigle Sisters at Hugh's Room at the end of March, and then the next week, same place, I'm seeing Melanie. I'm REALLY fucking excited about those two shows.
Michael Brennan's got a new record done, and his cd release party is coming up. That should be a good one. Do you know him? Last time I saw him play, it was almost all covers, but it was really good covers. Like, seriously great country covers. Really nice.
Oh! This isn't really a concert, but I think David Sedaris is coming to Toronto in May. That should be wicked.
Ramblin' Jack Elliott's playing Hugh's Room at the end of the month. I'd like to see that show.
Holy shit. I just noticed that The Wedding Present is coming. That's very exciting news.
Okay I'll stop now.
What about you?
Kings of Leon are at The Opera House tomorrow night, but it's sold out, and I'm working. Are you going?
p.p.s. FUCK Steve Earle is fucking sold out. Wow. That makes me really sad. Wow.

Have any more from this show.
yeah but I think Riny's getting tired of editting my posts--I need to get more edumacated in using imageshack

yeah they friggin' sold out in Boston too >:(
nope working

nah. go ahead man. I love fixing stuff :)
the trick is to resize em to around 550 width before you upload em to imageshack.
or... keep em big but use the thumbnail link that imageshack gives you.
i love this new album. m.ward is amazing, his songs just glow.
i wish jim and m.ward would make a whole album together. :D
Quotei love this new album. m.ward is amazing, his songs just glow.
Mmm, I just got it, too. I feel like there is such amazing new music happening these days. Is anybody else really damn excited about all of it?
RyanCorpse, I just checked, and he's coming back to Toronto on April 17th at Lee's Palace. Isn't that wicked? Can you be sure to wear a short-sleeved shirt this time so that I can see your special tattoos? ;)
HEY! so I just heard on the radidio that Kings of Leon got an opening spot on the U2 tour--pretty cool hey 8)
QuoteHEY! so I just heard on the radidio that Kings of Leon got an opening spot on the U2 tour--pretty cool hey 8)
I'm trying to picture it... It's totally cool for Kings of Leon. More exposure = wicked.
Well, perhaps old U2 aren't as far gone as I'd thought...
I got my tickets last night! It's very exciting that he's coming twice so soon after the last one.
And the boys at Soundscapes and I talked about him last night. I did that thing where I turn into a nonsensical geek when I'm talking out loud about an artist/band that I like. But they were geeking out, too. I was like:
"Dudes, I put on the last one [trans of vinc.] and I was like, within three seconds, I was like 'Holy shit'."
And they're nodding their heads, and then the one guy says:
"Man, I was the same way. It's so amazing."
and I go:
"Yeah. And the new one is pretty incredible, too."
and then he told me that he hasn't had a chance to listen to the new one, because he doesn't want to hear it at the store - he wants to hear it at home, but he's working so much...
Anyhow. I like being a nerd in a record store with like-minded nerds.
Just listening to Transistor Radio today (again, again, again), and wanted to say that I love the "ahhhh" bit (with Jim) on Fuel for Fire. :)
Also found some pics of the Toronto show here: http://www.chromewaves.net/concertPhotos.php?concertPhotosID=77
So the opening act was Brett Randall - anybody know who that is, or where to find out about him? I can't seem to find him anywhere, and I don't even know if he's local or not... I liked his songs.
Oh man, I also enjoy the organ on this record. It's really so good.
just saw m. ward in Austin at The Parish
(http://webspace.utexas.edu/ace67/ward.jpg)
he sounded wonderful and was quite the showman. many people we met that night had a lot of love for some jacket as well.
i have a love affair with that hollow body guitar. so shiny and so red.
You're a saint! (ha!)
Hey, was he playing with the band, or solo? And who opened?
That IS a fine guitar.
he played a few songs alone, but mostly played with the band norfolk and western, who also opened. they accompanied him nicely. he's a very cool dude and puts on a very cool show.
Yay! That's the band he's going to play with here in a week and a half. :)
And he's coming to Belgium too!
Has anybody heard his cover of Story Of An Artist by Daniel Johnston? It's on the discovered/covered cd. Really nice
His new disc is great too, I picked it up a week ago
QuoteStory Of An Artist by Daniel Johnston
I think he played it in Toronto last time he was here. (I know he played a Daniel Johnston song, and I think it was that one...) Maybe he'll play it in Belgium!
Yeah, maybe I can request it...
Oh, did he play Undertaker?
QuoteYeah, maybe I can request it...
Oh, did he play Undertaker?
Crap, now you've stumped me. There was some guy who posted a list, let me see if I can find it.
I know he played O'Brien's Nocturne, and he played a Joanna Newsom song, and... damn. The guy didn't do a set list. (Pics are here: http://www.chromewaves.net/concertPhotos.php?concertPhotosID=77 I actually really like that chromewaves. I should write and tell him/them that.)
Anyhow, you know, I think he DID play Undertaker. I think he used his loop pedal for that one. He played Fuel for Fire (hadn't heard it), and it almost made me cry. A few songs did.
p.s. I think there's a new picture of him at the Merge Records site. :) http://www.mergerecords.com/band.php?band_id=8&
Thanks a lot ;)
I really feel like going now...
Happy Days. Taking my girl to see M Ward Sunday night in NYC, when I saw him a few weeks back at the Knitting Factory he played Undertaker and Story of an Artist. So Nice! That guy is golden. I hope he tours with MMJ, but if he doesn't, he doesn't... it's all good. M. Ward and MMJ fans are lucky people! & I think this is probably the coolest band message board I've ever been on. MMJ should be so lucky! Can't wait to see that shows page filled up.
p.s.

bookmark that page, a nice little present for fans of good music, like yourself. Sea Ray rock!
It's true, hey? With this lovely warm weather (I'm assuming NYC and surrounding areas are as gorgeous as Toronto today), and all of these exciting music prospects in the air - everything really is, alllll goooood. :)
Hey - just found this. It's really nice.

that's a great link! thanks for that.
hey do you think m. would give me a guitar lesson if i ask nicely
Quotehey do you think m. would give me a guitar lesson if i ask nicely
HA! Maybe if you ask nicely AND offer him lots of money.
:)
Wow. I'm still in a warm fuzzy haze, but the show tonight was absolutely beautiful. Tremendous. Norfolk & Western were awesome, and there was a middle band called Devotchka who kind of combined old timey sounds with maybe a bit of Klezmer styling. We were totally floored by them. And then, of course, Mr. M was in his usual fine form, backed up by Norfolk and Western. There was a number at the end where they all came out and played together, and I can't even begin to think about how to describe how wonderful it was. Two encores.
And then we chatted with some of the guys from Devotchka, and then had a long chat with Rachel and Adam from N&W, and they're gonna play with M. Ward at Bonnaroo. They said they really like Toronto, and they thought the crowd was really great. That's always nice. And they'll be playing on the first night, he thinks. So that's M. Ward on the 10th for all you folks going to Bonnaroo.
Honestly, if y'all get a chance to see this show in your town, I can't recommend it enough. A truly magical evening. :)
Just found this: http://www.sltrib.com/themix/ci_2679030 :)
Their is/was? a great fansite for the main man M. Ward @ www.onehundredangels.co.ukbutlately when u try to access the site it says access denied. Is it just for the first hundred people who signed up there?
Anyone know what's up with that site?
Its been 'access denied' for more than a month i guess. Don't know what's up with it...
Found this on the BBC
http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/collective/A3714347
There is a nice session with Willy Mason on the same site. I like his song Hard Hand To Hold.
He will tour with MMJ and he appeared in an article in one of our more popular magazines wearing the black My Morning Jacket T-shirt. That always helps.
Oh nice! Thanks for that M. Ward fan!!
QuoteThe weirdness is in the production, a rich hollowness created strictly with effects pedals and acoustic techniques.
I'm so surprised that nobody ever talks about the drumming. The drumming on his records is very distinct - it's there to keep the beat, and not add a lot of fanciness. Like, when Rachel was playing, she mostly used mallets (is that the right word? Her sticks had the white balls on the end). So that she basically kept time, with a pretty specific-sounding rhythm, occasionally breaking into sexy chucka chuckas.
Man, I don't know drumming from tomatoes, and I wish I could explain myself better. I just TOTALLY dig the drumming in his music. It fits perfectly. :)
Ok EC. I'm going to see M Ward the 30th of May!
Looking forward to it, I'll watch out for the sexy chucka chuckas ;)

Oh CHILLS - you're going to have such a good time. Yeah, Rachel is from Norfolk and Western (who'll probably be playing, too). She didn't play on the album, but she and Adam have been touring with him. And be forewarned, you will have a crush on her. Girls and boys alike think she is quite special. :) Rock on, you're going to be so rocked out!!
Quote
And be forewarned, you will have a crush on her.
Haha, thanks for that, you're getting me too excited for this one! I'll surely report on that...
I looove the drumming on Four Hours in Washington. Was air drumming that on the subway the other day, it was a lot of fun. Yeah, his beats are correct. ;)
Soooo. M Ward has cancelled his show on the 30th :(
Due to some strike at the BBC his date for appearing at the Jools Holland show is placed a day later. Indeed the day he should be coming to Belgium >:(. As this is a commercial/financial opportunity he can't pass up on we're totally screwed. No later date is planned.
This sucks, I was looking forward to the show...
Aw fucking hell, Chills. I'm so sorry to hear that. And I got you all pumped and everything.
Stupid striking BBC. :(
Thanks, yes you did get me pumped up, with the sexy drums and all ;) Now i have to watch him on the bbc, while i know they ruined MY show! Ah, you have to roll with the punches!
Can someone please confirm that Mr Ward is playing the Jools Holland show and if he is when, because this will need to be recorded. Maybe i could help you overseas people out by sending you a dvd of the performance(s)but i would have to charge postage and for disc...im not that well off :)
