Ok...so what's the BEST show you've ever seen (by any band in any time period). Here are my top 3:
1) My Morning Jacket - bonnaroo '04 (The oh, so legendary gig)
2) Oysterhead - Asheville '01 (Trey, Stu AND les...damn what a fantastic show. Even got to shake stuart copeland's hand)
3) Drive By Truckers - The Music Farm, Charleston SC '04 (piss drunk for this show and it couldn't have been any better)
No particular order here.
1)MMJ - Nashville summer '04 - My first MMJ show. I remember it like it was yesterday. Loud, sweaty, rock music, with a few nice solo JJ songs near the end when Patrick damn-near passed out. But then he came back for more rockin'. That, folks, is devotion to your craft.
2) DBT - March '04 House Show in Greenhill - It was a very nice, laid back , semi-acoustic DBT show. On a friend of the band's back porch with a trashcan full of PBR and the country air and stars to keep up company.
3) Tenacious D - ATL at the Tabernacle - My first D show. Being at the Tabernacle, it was definitely a religious experience.

That's mine, too. That was when I met you, Mr. wiggum. I think it was that day. That whole weekend was fairly exemplary.
Hm.
My 2nd best show was MMJ in NC in June, but I have seen other shows in my life. So I'll go with non-MMJ.
- George Jones at Massey Hall. His band was so blech it was horrible, but George was the shit.
- Toronto Symphony Orchestra (with Saraste as the maestro) playing Beethoven's 9th in either 1994 or 1995. I've seen it twice there, but the first time blew my head right off. I was soooo into that.
- Belle and Sebastian at (Kool Haus I think?) in... hm... 2002? They were brilliant. They asked the audience if anybody wanted to do karaoke, and they picked a girl and her song was Satisfaction, and it was really good. Surprisingly so.
- Now, I can't remember who was opening for who or what and when, but there were three bands: Spiritualized, Charlatans and Dandy Warhols that all played at The Guvernment (if it was called that then, it's changed names). Those were amazing shows.
- Mogwai at the Horseshoe was pretty wicked. If indeed it was the Horseshoe and not The Rivoli.
Why can't I remember where I've seen these shows? What the hell? Man I'm getting old.
Oh concerts. I love them.
The Warlocks(Grateful Dead incognito) Hampton 10/08/89 and 10/09/89...crowd energy was off the charts.
MMJ Ziggys in June 05...still wish I had a recording of this show. The Steam Engine opener caught me off guard.
Acoustic Giants = Bela FLeck,Sam Bush,Tony RIce and Ricky Simpkins Martinsville High School(my high school) sometime bettween 94-95...this was the best show I have ever seen...they are some of the best musicians ever assembled in one room.
I liked my first Neil show in 1983..James Madision University,VA..we ate a pizza loaded down with those funny mushrooms right before the show.
John Prine w/ Victoria Williams as the opener,1995 Roanoke VA....both of them blew me away.
Theres 5 that come to my mind.
1) MMJ - Planetarium 2001
2) Bob Dylan - Bogarts 1999
3) MMJ - Headliners sometime in 2001 when they let some people sit on stage with them for the whole show. I sat right next to Jim.

Damn, that's cool.
Ashamed to say I've yet to see the Jacket live!
In no particular order:
BLACK CROWES - Brixton Academy, London 92
LENNY KRAVITZ - Many times in London 90 - 93
TOOL, RATM & (the very underated PAW) Astoria London 92?
SMASHING PUMPKINS - Astoria, London 92 (hate what they became but Gish - what a debut!)
NIN - London 92 (Same as the Pumpkins for Pretty Hate Machine)
KYUSS - Many times in London 91- 95
The ROOTS - Japan, 02
The WHITE STRIPES - Japan, 03
DBT - London, 03
BILLY JOE SHAVER & RECKLESS KELLY - London, 04
What a great thread Primushead - cheers!

aMillionDreams, there is a strange phenomenon that I've heard of where girls like to touch Jim's legs. I don't think I've ever gone up close enough to the front of the stage to check it out, but if you were up there, right there, did you notice it?
there were two girls sitting right next to me but I didn't notice them touching his legs much. However, every now and then Jim would forget where he/I was and almost trip over me and so I would periodically have to push Jim back towards the mic. I assure you it wasn't anything sexual, though it was pretty rockin.
The best part of the show was during "One Big Holiday" and watching Jim waiting to rip out his solo, when he stepped on his effects pedal and started his solo he went to the front of the stage and the whole place went crazy. It was amazing to see what a crowd looks and feels like from the stage. Amazing. If anyone has this show please send me a PM ;D

Hmm, maybe it's more of a later phenomenon...
You do know that it's okay to get a little sexed by a rock star, even if you're a boy, right? ;)
yeah, right ;)
Was anyone else at that show? It might have been 2002. I know that Guetig was in the band and they were about to head off on their biggest tour to that point. Anyone?

How did you manage to see that show? WOW!
I met Shonna's brother at a show in Nashville the night before. He lives close to where I live and his fiance' lived in Greenhill at the time. He told me that they were going to be doing a small show the next night. It was announced on the Yahoo list at the last minute, so it was mostly friends of the band with a couple of fans from the list. Very cool show.
The recording of it is here:
http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-details-db.php?id=27636
Thanks olwiggum - downloading the show right now!
I met the whole band when I saw them at a show in London a couple of years back. Backstage door wasn't locked, walked right in & there they were. Jason, Shonna & Patterson were real friendly, Brad didn't say much, Mike asked me if I had any weed! They gave me a can of Bud which I still have (empty, of course!) This show is on my Best Of list.
Brad has never said a whole lot when I've been around him, so I'm sure there were no hard feelings on his end.
:) He's the quiet one of the group.
I've never been around Cooley a whole lot, but he's always been cool to me when I've seen him. I've been around Jason, Shonna, and Patterson more than the rest. Patterson shot the shit with a few of us at that house show that night. He told us (it was a secret then) that they were going to record a cover of "Rebel" by Tom Petty the next day that was to be used in an episode of "King of the Hill".
I run into Jason and Shonna around town every once in a while (they live here in the Shoals). They're probably the nicest couple I've ever met.

Thanks...I'm hoping more people share their concert stories eventually.
I met Mike at the charleston show. He was wasted and talked for like 5 minutes to a few of us. He even signed my friends' checkbook.
I met the easy b outside of a patterson solo show. I got him and patterson to sign a poster of mine...it looks sweet.
mmj - bonnaroo 2004
jeff buckley - nighttown 1995
rage against the machine - pinkpop 1993
the black crowes - melkweg 2002
pearl jam - parkhal 1996
These come to mind, in no particular order
MMJ: Tilburg 2004

Grandaddy: Gent - 2000
White Stripes: Werchter - 2002
Iggy Pop and The Stooges: Lokeren - 2005

Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds: Brussels - 2005
Brian Wilson: Lokeren - 2004
pearl jam- pittsburgh 2003
QOTSA- Cleveland 2005
pearl jam- pittsburgh 2000
Toadies- Cleveland 1996
pearl jam- pittsburgh 1998
i'll just put the highlights of this year.
1.) The Mars Volta - Bonnaroo 2005 - Best show i've ever seen hands down, sorry MMJ, but it would be hard for any band to have anything on TMV live.
2.) My Morning Jacket - Bonnaroo 2005 - it was my first time seeing MMJ, even though some people had negative comments about it, i thought it was a great show. TMV put on the best show at Bonnaroo, but MMJ was my favorite band at Bonnaroo.
3.) Interpol - Bogarts 2-7-05 - The fact that it was my first time seeing them made this a very special show, i saw them a month later in Louisville and that was a great show as well.
Not the final list, but the first that come to mind are:
MMJ @ headliners, louisville - Sept 26 & 27, 2003
Avail & By the Grace of God @ Thunderdome, louisville - 1998?
Fruitbats @ southgate house, Newport, KY - October 2004
hehe, that two day stand at Headliner's was pretty killer.
here's a short list, not the final one, but a list nonetheless...
12-14-99 first MMJ show
1985-Santana at the Syria Mosque in Pittsburgh.
11-99 Guided by Voices, Headliner's
7-03 MMJ opening for Foo Fighters, Pittsburgh
4-1-88 The Dead in Pittsburgh, Day 2 of 3 (1 and 3 sucked)
1983: Black Sabbath, opened by Accept. Pure evil.
1987: Rush, Hold your Fire tour
1994: Smashing Pumpkins, right after Siamese Dream came out
well shoot, i have a few...
I'll start with the Bonnaroo:
Definitely MMJ at bonnaroo, that was just awesome. Probably the point that made the weekend for me was during (I think) run thru, mightve been a different song, let me know if you can remember, when Jim went out to edge of the stage, had his foot up on the monitor and was holding out a chord on hiw Flying V with his fist in the air and looked the audience over from left to right. I was all the way on his right, and I had my fist up too, and we made eye contact. I then gave him the nod, and he just grinned and turned back toward the drumset and started frickin rockin out. It was awesome. I felt like part of the band at that point.
Also, Mars Volta was pretty sweet, but i was worn out that day, so we headed back early. Heard about two or three songs. I have to see them live again.
Secret Machines were absolutely phenomenal there too. One of the best shows I've ever seen.
And this wasn't at bonnaroo, but one of the most amazing shows I've been to was Muse. I'm almost convinced that those guys are sorcerers. There's so much energy in those shows. Muse was frickin amazing. They started playing the beginning to Moby Dick at one point, too. I was like "Yesss!!! Did you hear that?!! They're playing Zeppelin!!!" to all my friends who wouldn't really have recognized. I was grinning like a bastard. Also a good show becaus ethat was the night that I found out that my lovely lady fit right under my chin (back before we were dating though) and I kept her safe from gettin tossed by the crowd the whole night. She got punched in the stomach afterward on the way to bathroom and i wasnt there for that, and that freaked out like none other, so i went outside with her and got the obligatory arm aorund the shoulder. It's amazing how one of those can help things out.
Sorry to be a mush, I haven't seen her in about two weeks. I miss those eyes...
:)
haha, i'm done.....
I like Muse alot and I've been dying to see them live. They remind me of Radiohead (if they rocked out alot more).
I'd heard that Muse were excellent live - will have to check out a CD. Anybody know where to start?
either origin of symmetry or absolution
Quoteeither origin of symmetry or absolution
Thanks Eisey, I'll put those on the 'to-buy' list.
Quoteeither origin of symmetry or absolution
Just out of curiousity, which one did you like better eisey?
well best show i´ve ever seen was yesterday! funeral for a friend + emanuel! normally i don´t listen to that sort of music. but both bands kicked ass!! :P
no particular order here:
1 - dan bern & the ijbc @ canal street tavern in dayton march 2003. Wow, this probably would be my choice for best. show. ever. something like 28 songs, played over 3 1/2 hours. not many of you dan, but fuckin' a, it doesnt get better than that.
2 - tom waits @ chicago theatre aug 1999. another wow show, only concert i ever paid more than $25. he played over 2 1/2 hours and in the beginning came down the aisle with a megaphone doing "the black rider", and i was 5 feet from him. fucking great.
3 - afghan whigs @ bogarts in cincy sept 1999. i think this was their last show ever, or maybe next to last. if you can walk away from a greg dulli show and not be horny, something is wrong with you.
4 - arcade fire @ southgate house newport, ky nov 2004. they fucking bring it live, it was like a religious experience.
5 - mmj @ orange peel asheville, nc june 2005. fucking traffic jams and whatnot to get there were subsided after they opened with off the record, and i forgot all my troubles.
6 - robyn hitchcock & the rock armada @ top cat's in cincy nov 1999. one of my favourite musician, standing front row 2 feet from him in a place that maybe holds 300 or 400. rock & roll experience.
7 - orchestra morpine @ newport music hall may 2000(?). original members of morphine along with 7 or 8 piece band paying tribute to mark sandman. i swear to you, he was there with us all that night.
Quotei'll just put the highlights of this year.
3.) Interpol - Bogarts 2-7-05 - The fact that it was my first time seeing them made this a very special show, i saw them a month later in Louisville and that was a great show as well.
dude, i was at that show too. i loved the show, except i hate bogarts! id love to see 'em again, though.
Quote1983: Black Sabbath, opened by Accept. Pure evil.
So, was Dio (your presidential candidate :)) singing at that period?
robert randolph and the family band - roseland 2002, so much energy
percy hill - paradise last spring
billy joel and elton john at msg
phish - continental 03, only time i got to see them
ben folds central park 2004?
wilco and mmj this summer - best double-bill ever
springsteen - giants stadium run two years ago
i'm bad with dates, but those are some

yeh, Bogart's definetly wasn't my favorite venue, but it was a great performance from a great band. If i ever upload the pictures, i'll send you a link.
Quotewell shoot, i have a few...

.....
I felt bad before TMV came on, i had sand all over myself and in my shoes and they were late to perform. Not to mention that I fell asleep during Dave Matthews Band. My friends were giving me crap for it but i didn't care, dull music does that to me. But after the Mars Volta started performing I got so into it.
We probably bumped shoulders during MMJ, i was in the third or fourth row and to the right of Jim.
we probably didnt bump shoulders, good spot to be man. I was just behind the left speaker set-up, first frickin row. Oh yeah. I sat through the Old97's for these guys, and that was definitely a labor of love.
And about Muse, I can't really say about Origin of Symmetry, except that it's a bit heavier. I think Absolution is awesome, but I haven't listened to it in a while. I would go with Origin of Symmetry, just because its fun to listen to a band develop. That said, I only own Absolution, and I'm happy.
But "Space Dementia" is such a cool song.
Has anybody seen Buddy Guy live?
Saw him a few years back & that was an amazing show!
Incredible guitarist (closest you'll ever get to seeing Jimi Hendrix) & a great showman.
QuoteHas anybody seen Buddy Guy live?
HELLLLLL YEAH! Way back around '88 or '89 I saw Buddy open for John Lee Hooker in Boston (I believe Roomful of Blues was there too). Buddy blew my freakin' head of (similar to the Hendrix effect ;)). I cracked up every time he stepped to the side of the stage to sneak a toot from one of his entourage, but I though his fingers were gonna burst into flames a couple times. After the show I hung around outside and followed Mr Hooker's limo to his hotel and got him to sign a blank check from my checkbook (only decent paper I had) and I still have that check 8).
Autograph session 2: Blue Oyster Cult at the same venue I caught Buddy/JLH--convinced my buddy to hang back after the show and voila Mr Bloom and Mr Dharma come walzing out. I bought Buck a shot of Crown Royal and bothe guys signed a $1 bill for me which I also still have.
Autograph session #3: MMJ at Pearl Street 2/26/04 a Buddy System poster I saved (The Bear from ISM) covered with the the sigs of the pissa-est band going :o
Thanks Fanatic - what a great post!

That's fucking Hilarious!
Sticking with the Hendrix thing, anybody ever see SRV? (you'll really be showing your age if you admit to that one!)
I've heard there's a guy in Austin called Gary Clark Jr who plays at the Continental Club every week. Aparently he's stepped into SRV shoes?

I saw Gary Clark Jr. open for Jimmie Vaughan awhile back and was really impressed. I bought all of his albums and listen to him a lot, especially his tribute album. He's very talented and he is a young guy too, only 20 or 21 I think. I would definitely recommend catching his show if you can.
Thanks very much Elizanne - I'll check out his CDs! :)
