Title: Rocket Man & Other Favourite Cover Versions
Post by: dragonboy on Sep 05, 2005, 05:43 PM
In honour of Jim's love of playing other peoples songs I thought it would be cool to start a favourite cover versions thread.
Here are a few of mine to get us started:
Don't Twice Twice, It's Alright - Steve Young (Bob Dylan)
Subterranean Homesick Blues - Reckless Kelly (Bob Dylan)
Goodbye - Emmy Lou Harris (Steve Earle)
I'm Looking Through You - Steve Earle (The Beatles)
Hurt - Johnny Cash (Nick Cave)

some of my faves are:

come see about me (supremes)
my world is empty without you (supremes)
hyperballad (björk)

mike patton (faith no more/mr bungle/fantomas/tomahawk) does a shit load of covers which i enjoy as well.

Easy - Faith No More (Lionel Richard)
Jolene - The White Stripes (Dolly Parton)
Bohemian Rhapsody - Flaming Lips (Queen)
At Dawn - Megan Hamilton (MMJ)
Tyrone - MMJ (Erykah Badu)
The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down - Johnny Cash (The Band)
In My Life - Johnny Cash (The Beatles)

if any Low fans, check out disc 3 of the Lifetime set:

Blue-eyed Devil- Soul Coughing
Surfer Girl- BBoys
Fearless-Floyd
they do Open Arms from journey, but kill it.
also, Mark Kozelekk is is one of the greatest coverers of all time.  "Rock and Roll Singer is just fucking classic.

I like all Jim's covers, but to pick a favorite would be New Morning from the X-mas Fiasco disc.

Ah wiggum, I was just listening to that yesterday.  :)

Okay:

Dark End of the Street - Flying Burrito Brothers
Blinded by the Light - Manfred Mann
Nothing Compares 2 U - Sinear O'Connor
Moon River - Morrissey
Wrecking Ball - Emmylou Harris
Stairway to Heaven - Dolly Parton (I can't help it.  I love her.)
I'm pretty fond of Jennifer Warnes' Famous Blue Raincoat record of Leonard Cohen songs, but I think that's only because it reminds me of my Mom.
And I love The Commitments.

Is it bad to eat chocolate that has turned white even if it doesn't taste bad?  Fuck it, I just bought it.  If I'm not here tomorrow it's because I died from bad chocolate.  Please tell my family.  ;)

Yeah EC, I took that mix that I circulated and modified it since then. :)

I also really dig Frank Black's version of "Dark End of the Street". That song was written by 2 dudes from my town. David Hood plays bass on his version, too.

I just sent you another one. Check it too.  :)

The DBTs have a great cover of "Like a Rolling Stone" that is on a CD that comes with the newest issue of Uncut. It has all covers from "highway 61 revisted".

I just thought of another one.  The Corn Sisters (Carolyn Mark and Neko Case) do Fist City (originally Loretta Lynn).  It. is. awesome.

The Gambler - Mike Doughty (Kenny Rogers)

Where can I find this wiggum? I checked on allmusic & found no trace. Love the original...

Which reminds me of another great cover:
Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Is in) - Kenny Rogers & the First Edition (Mickey Newbury)

(I love this scene from the Big Lebowski!)

"The Gambler" cover is an Itunes exclusive. That's where I got it. It's great. Doughty's voice works well with that song. Love it.

Does anyone have JJ's version of "Dark End of the Street"? It's not on the DVD.   :-[

BTW, Gram must have really loved Dan Penn. Dan co-wrote that one and "Do Right Woman" which the Flying Burrito Brothers did.

Also, my mix included these that I just remembered:

Darling Nikki - Foo Fighters (Prince)
War Pigs - Faith No More (Black Sabbath)

God damn, I love covers.

Thanks - off to itunes I go!  :)
Do you have Gram's Sleepless Nights? That also has some great covers (Merle Haggard & Buck Owens etc)

EC & Fanatic talking about Mark Knopfler made me think of another:

Feel Like Going Home - The Notting Hillbillies (which features Mark K.) (Charlie Rich)

Man, I love covers too!!!

Well yeah. I guess I should have said that I like GOOD covers. :)

The only Flying Burrito Bros that I have is the Sin City comp that I got from EC when she was here in Bamalamaland.

You need to get everything you can by Gram Parsons & the Flying Burito Brothers!

Sticking with the FBB, does anybody have the new Chris Hillman release? It's on my wishlist, heard it was a return to form.

That's almost every song they ever did.  :)

Do you like it?

I love Wheels.  And Train Song.

I don't, but I've heard great things.  I bought a Chris Hillman album last year at Grimey's, and it SUCKED ASS.  I was SO disappointed.  I can't even remember what it was called.  Plus, that dude just sounded so bitter about Gram in all his interviews, it used to piss me off.  The guy's dead for fuck's sake, let it be.

But he seems to be cooler about stuff these days...

Yer, I'm listening to a Gram CD right now!
Did anyone see the Johnny Knoxville movie Grand Theft Parsons? I was really disappointed.

I wasn't really interested in that.  There was a BBC documentary, though, that was pretty damn good.  'wiggum copied it for me.

Have you read Hickory Wind?  I liked that.

I remember reading something about that. I might be wrong but I think the same article said that it would later be released on DVD? Hope so...
Haven't read Hickory Wind, checking it on amazon now.  Thanks :)

"Grand Theft Parsons" was pretty entertaining, but I don't really know much about Gram. I'm pretty sure some of the film was glorified for fiction's sake though.

Seriously, can anyone produce an mp3 of Jim doing "Dark End of the Street"?

Hickory Wind is great.  I mean, I think (I might be wrong), it's one of the only biographies about him...

Jim's and Colin Cripps' nudie suits on the GP tribute show were AWESOME.  There was a little outfit that Jack white was wearing for a bit that reminded me of a nudie suit...  I think it was red and white and black...  (hahahaha)

When I went to the Country Music Hall of Fame Gram's famous Marijuana leaf Nudie Suit was on loan to another museum! That was my main reason for going! >:(

I would've been so seriously pissed about that.  Holy crap.

Wait - THAT is in the country music hall of fame?  what the hell?!  That's weird to me, a little...

Gillian Welch's version of "Beulah Land" is quite sweet.
Also "Satisfied" done by John Hiatt.

Both on the Avalon Blues tribute to Mississippi John Hurt.

Very cool compilation, except for a couple total crap songs. Beck is on there, as well as Ben Harper and Allison Krauss.

Definitely Prince. I won over my wife doing karaoke to that one.

the Boxer - Dylan (Simon & Garfunkel)
Nobody Does it Better - Radiohead (Carly Simon)
Every Grain of Sand - Emmylou (Dylan)
Dead Flowers - Townes Van Zandt (Stones)
Sea of Love - Cat Power (Phil Phillips)

Great Thread!

"Seven Days" - Ron Wood (Bob Dylan)
"Like a Rolling Stone" - Jimi Hendrix (Bob Dylan)
"Tyrone" - MMJ (Eryka Badu)
"I Wanna Dance with Somebody" - David Byrne (Whitney Houston)
"Careless Whisper" - Ben Folds and Rufus Wainwright (George Michael
"Across the Universe" - Rufus Wainwright (Lennon/McCartney)
"The Piano Has Been Drinkin (Not Me)" - Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks (Tom Waits)

I'm sure I'm leaving out some of the all-time greats.  I really enjoy a good cover.

Here are some more:

Crazy - Pasty Cline (Willie Nelson) Can't believe I forgot this one!!!
Crazy Mary - Pearl Jam (Victoria Williams)
Turn the Page - Metallica (Bob Seger)

I've always felt that Waylon Jennings had a knack for turning other peoples songs into stone-cold country classics, here are some of my favs:

Honky Tonk Heroes (Billy Joe Shaver)
Pick up The Tempo (Willie Nelson)
Lonsome On'ry & Mean (Steve Young)
Midnight Rider (Allman Brothers)
Never Been to Spain(Live) (No idea who did this 1st?)
