Title: Calexico and Iron & Wine
Post by: ratsprayer on Sep 14, 2005, 08:04 AM
ok, i put this on my currently playing list earlier this morning, but i think it needs its own topic.  it a collaborative EP called Lays in the Reins.  sam from iron & wine does most of the singing, but there are some amazing harmonies & melodies on here.  youd think theyre one tight working band that have been together for ages.  if you like either artist, you gotta get it.  its really just as good if not better than anything either one of them has done on their own.  dig it!

calexico have this amazing ability to create something great out of the most minimalistic arrangements.  theres not really any mariachi on this at all, and it doesnt suffer one bit.

all right, you need to go out and get every calexico album there is.  it all has that southwest / desert feel, but proper calexico albums have mariachi added to the mix, and its a bit more electic than this release.  two of members also are the rhthym section for giant sand.  theyre praised all around, but ive still not heard them.

In the Reins is a great mini-album.  If you have not listened to Calexico before this album do not think you are going to hear a sound that is close to this.  It is definitley more Iron & Wine then Calexico and rightfully so, being that they are all Sam Beam's songs.  You can definitely hear and appreciate Calexico's presence, but they are more a supporting cast than a collaborator.  Calexico is a wonderful band; any of their albums are worth hearing.
