Title: DVDs you just bought
Post by: MMJ_fanatic on Jan 08, 2009, 12:29 PM
We have a CD and Vinyl thread so I thought this an appropriate topic.
I'll start:

"Into the Wild"--on Blu Ray---gorgeous

"End of the Century--The Ramones"  my new favorite documentary.  I especially enjoyed the live clips and the storie about working with Phil Spector.

Just kidding  ;)

Haven't got it yet, should be tomorrow (Sat) or Monday.

I'm trying to lower my expectations because it's the first movie Shane is directing that he didn't right himself + it's not very long (70/80mins)

But it's hard to have low expectations because I love the man so much!

I know Amazon and Best Buy were selling all 5 seasons for 80-90$ around Xmas, but not sure if thats still going on.

I agree with DB - make sure you watch at least half the first season before questioning if you like it or not. The 1st season takes especially long to get into stride because all the cops are just teaming up, etc. Also, I know by the time I finished the first season I still didnt know all the mid level characters, so dont let that frustrate you. Theres a lot of characters to keep track of, but if you pay attention and dont watch it drunk ( :)), you should be fine.

When starting, Id recommend watching the "Previously On" things they have before each episode and reading the on screen synopsis they give. Should help with that somewhat.

Eternal Sunshine is good.

Its funny because maybe the 2 best comedy actors of the 90's - Carrey and Adam Sandler - have excelled with dramatic roles this decade and not been all that good in comedy IMO.

Hey True,

It been many years since I saw Vanilla Sky.  I think that the reason I found it so disappointing is that what I love about Cameron Crowe's movies is that there is a lot of heart in the writing and the dialogue just crackles.

Maybe it was because this was a remake and not one of his original scripts, but this one just didn't do it for me.

Perhaps I should take another look at it.  Why is it your favorite work of his?

Well I guess I like strange movies that require more than one viewing. The more I have to think about a film, the more rewarding it is understanding it. I connected with the artistic aspect of it, the emotions, the dreaminess. I am a little let down to learn that its a remake from a fairly recent foreign film. And Penelope Cruz is in both? The reason its my favorite Crowe film? I'm not that big of a Crowe fan I guess. He seems like a good guy that obviously has good musical tastes. Almost Famous was good. Elizabethtown was a chick flick, I only watched it to see MMJ in it. Say Anything is a typical 80's movie, entertaining from what I remember but nothing special. I've never seen Jerry Maguire.

Apocalypse Now - Complete Dossier version. Includes both the 1979 original and the Redux version, along with lots of documentary stuff. The bits about the soundtrack and music are fascinating - this was pretty much the first movie that had a 5.1 surround mix that was used in the theaters.

I was always puzzled when I rented the movie because I could have sworn there was some crazy explosion imagery during the credits at the end, turns out that was only on the first prints and initial video releases, and removed in all later versions.

Heard mixed reviews on that movie. Either its great or its terrible pretty much. 1 of those guys on "At The Movies" had it in the Top 5 of their worst movies of 2008, and that says something because most of the other movies in their were like Love Guru and Beverly Hills Chihuahua

QuoteApocalypse Now - Complete Dossier version.

IMO its easily the best war movie ever made

Fuck those guys. I've read enough great reviews that I KNOW I'll like it, I've liked all of Kaufman's movies so far. Most people that don't like it probably don't get Kaufman. Roger Ebert had it in his favorites of '08, i'm sure he knows more than those guys from at the movies. Well I'm gonna watch soon so I'll report back later.

First one I've bought in a long time:  Gravity in 3D!  Mostly as an excuse to try out my brother's 3D projector, although I had been wanting to see it for awhile.

Looks AWESOME on our 7 ft movie screen, in 3D, with my stereo pitching in some truly theater quality sound (imho)!

Next up may be Jurassic Park and Little Mermaid in 3D, maybe Avatar...my 1 year old daughter loves Ariel, what can I say.

Anyone have recommendations for really good 3D movies?  As in, the movie is great, and they use the 3D effects really well...

I checked out from the Library, OUT OF THE FURNACE.  it was a great movie.  slow in the mind of my sister but powerful and beautifully shot in mine.  But truth be told i never really listen to my sisters opinion.  she watched True Detective with her lap top on her lap and didn't pay attention.   A shame.

The Hobbit films in 3D were extra-epic. As a father to 3 little girls, we got Tangled in 3D; it was incredible visually, and I've enjoyed the film each of the 4,726 times I've seen it.

I'm going to need to watch Interstellar again before I make a final comment on how I liked it.  The plot took a turn I wasn't expecting and I'm not sure how I feel about it.  Its very cool visually and the performances are solid all around.

I've started rewatching The Shield, as I have seasons 1-3 on DVD. Seeing that its not available to stream, I found the entire season, all 88 episodes, in a DVD box set on Amazon for $30!  The Shield is one of my top 5 shows and 34¢/episode is a bargain!

Great show. Tatiana is one of the best actors out there today. Amazing. I also love that Orphan Black is set almost entirely in Toronto's east end, which is also where I live. I know all the locales.

Indeed. She's amazing. I keep having to remind myself when I watch it that it's just the one actor and not all these totally different people.
