Title: Jacksonville City Nights vs. Every Other RA album
Post by: BH on Apr 03, 2008, 12:18 PM
OK, I don't have them all, but I do have quite a few now, and they are all great, don't get me wrong.  But none of them compare to Jacksonville City Nights.  Top to bottom, just spectacular.

If you don't agree, please tell me which one you think is better and why?
If you do agree, give me a "hells yeah"

(Yes, I'm a tad bit bored today.)

Well, I can't really cast a vote here, but if JCN is as good as you say it is, I'll have to pick it up. I have Heartbreaker and Cold Roses, and they both fall under the "pretty damn good, but not great" category. Ryan Adams has some GREAT songs, but neither of those two albums really blow me away as a whole.

(Back to the voting...)

wow, i don't have them all, so my vote could change with time. i'd say my favorite disc would be cold roses disc 2, because of the Dead like sound to it, but as a whole its not better than JCN.

so my vote: hells yeah Jacksonville City Nights!!

Cold Roses is good, but not good enough.   There is something slightly wrong with the production on Cold Roses (IMO)  Again, don't get me wrong, great album.

i know they're his most popular but GOLD and HEARTBREAKER are classic albums--that said, JCN is probably a 3rd favorite.

agreed. Heartbreaker and Gold are pobably one and two respectively. With Cold Roses and JCN right behind.......and Easy Tiger, which i just picked up, right behind them.

Heartbreaker is essential, in my opinion. "Come Pick Me Up" and "Oh My Sweet Carolina" are as perfect as perfect gets....

baba-booey.

Actually Heartbreaker is one of the few I don't have so there ya go.  I'm learning here.  I must purchase this supposed challenger and see what she's got!  Bring it!

I grew very close to Heartbreaker and still think it's one of the most awesome collection of songs ever by anyone.

But Jacksonville City Nights hit me at a time in my life where it spoke to me on every level.  It didn't come out of my CD player for about 4 months.  Simply amazing.

I vote for JCN.

Hmmm... off the top of my head, I would say that "Easy Tiger" is better, but it's been a while since I've listened to JCN from top to bottom... so I'll have to give it a listen again before I cast my vote.

On another note, I listened to my copy of "Cold Roses" on vinyl this weekend and it was a much better album than I remembered it being.

Cold Roses and Love is Hell I'd rank above Gold...Cold Roses is my favorite album. Sweet Illusions alone makes it great. Heartbreaker is excellent, too.

As of right now...this minute...(cold roses never changes though)

Cold Roses
Heartbreaker
JCN
Love is Hell
Gold
29
Demoltion
Easy Tiger
Rock N Roll

Cold Roses is a darn good Grateful Dead record, but Jacksonville City Nights is all Ryan, and it's a minor masterpiece.

WHAT?! Listen again, my friend. Two, I taught myself how to grow old, goodnight rose, oh my god whatever etc, etc, etc.  That record is amazing!  I have been revisiting Jacksonville City Nights a lot recently and it's a great record.  Number three on a list of RA records is pretty good.

It may next week before I can break the tie! I got a lot on my plate this weekend, but there's a small chance that I can sit down and spin in on Saturday. Not sure though.
:)

I'm gonna be holed up in the studio* this weekend.

* by studio, I mean my friends house with a bunch of mics, preamps, and pro-tools.

Well, if everyone breaks out there JCN for a listen I have accomplished my number one goal.  It is also apparent that I need to finish my collection starting with Heartbreaker.  I should have known, since Elton John said that album changed his life.

But just so you know, if I ever have to tell someone my last wishes, it's going to be one shot, a beer and a kiss.

speaking of Elton, has everyone seen Adams and Elton's performance on Crossroads? They play each others songs and Ryan does a killer "Tiny Dancer." I have the video and audio for those interested (if I can figure out how to upload it).

So I listened to JCN again this morning for the first time in a while... and I don't think it's as strong as "Easy Tiger".

So if I were casting a vote, this is the vote count:
Jacksonville City Nights      4
The Rest of R.A. Catalog    11

Next up to listen all the way through.... "Heartbreaker". It's been quite a while.

still shooting smack? hows that going for you?

here is my opinion on this.  courtney can be funny and cool at times but for the most part she is outta her mind.  Take in account like 2 days before she wrote this she got sued a like 2 million dollars.  I don't feel bad for her at all when she's talking about him taking her and her daughters food away.  If that was the case she wouldn't be getting limo's and spending all her money on drugs.  The thing about the record being paid for, i'm sure some of that is true but with all the things she is mixed up in i'm sure it is not as straight forward as she makes it seem.  Ryan has been a screw up over the years but if you look as his professional track record, and especially making records he takes that pretty seriously.  I'm a big RA fan and I think he's cleaned his act up bigtime in the last few years playing with the Cardinals on a solid basis.

That is some funny stuff - Courtney sounds like she's really got a good head on her shoulders and totally has her daughter's best interest at heart. She eloquently makes her points in a well thought-out, concise manner, and I think Ryan should really feel bad and pay back that $858,000... ;D

In other news, I just found out that yet another band has canceled on me - was supposed to see Secret Machines this saturday. Oh well, at least it was because they could make more money doing a show in Austin than in Norman, OK, and not because they were hungover real bad. Maybe I should start another thread to rant about this crap...

I know I could certainly add a few posts to that thread.

Ryan posted a little response on his site.

to whom it may concern,

these days i find myself working harder than ever at being at my best, overcoming my fears and pushing myself creatively in my every endeavor. my only wish after the work is completed is that it may prove further evidence that no matter how isolated we all may all feel at times, as sad or misrepresented, we are not alone. there's hope for and within each of us.

I've been dealing with the truth that i have at times been a bad example and/or glorified self destructive behavior. this was never intentional, but rather a consequence of leading a public life in plain sight and never expecting any sort of preferential treatment, isolation or protection.

Regardless of varied judgments as to my cultural relevance, i am thankfully alive and exercising my joy in creating. i only hope anyone who hears, reads or sees any of my contributions will permit the work to speak where i cannot.

i've realized and accepted that if people decide to dislike me, they're going to find reasons to justify disliking me. there's nothing i can do about that. that said, it still does pain me to be accused of fictional crimes against innocents or to be implicated in romantic gossip involving the possibly reality-challenged--however unreliable the source or outlandish the accusations. in the end, however, i know that i have never done or even meant anyone any harm.

anyway, the lives of public figures are so much more boring than anyone can imagine. honestly.

and also i like metal. A LOT. (even more than last time).

Yeah Ryan has been a lot better lately.  He's been sober and has really been good with the Cardinals in the last few years.  His blog page that he had a few months ago was hilarious.  He would make like fake Heavy metal videos and interview like Bob Mould in his apt.

You tempt me man - and I might just take you up on it! OSU's playing Texas A&M the next day, but it's only an 8 hour drive, plenty of time to get back. I'll have Ryan reimburse me for the fuel...

The offer stands until one of my deadbeat friends returns an e-mail and knowing them, it may take awhile, so think about it....

New album coming out in the Fall "Cardinals III/IV" sounds like a double album with Neil singing lead on some songs.

Nice.   What is the meaning behind III/IV?  Do you know?  Is there a I/II?
