The tabs on that site are very accurate. But I just printed off the songs I want to play and made my own book.  It's still pretty substantial.

....damn, what the hell were the tickets that were like $250, I thought you were going to say you spent something around that amount, you lucked out and you get to see Wilco again (make one of those funny seating charts you made last time for your Wilco show, I thought that was funny)...

Those $250 seats I believe were the seated sections to the left and right of the stage. The floor for this show is completely GA I believe.

Nice piece in today's Observer (the Music Monthly supplement):

I saw him for the first time earlier this year.  Might be one of my top 5 ever (and that was just a headline festival slot).

Personally I think one of the must underrated and underappreciated recordings he's ever done was the "Mirrorball" album w/ Pearl Jam.  Just go and listen to the song "Scenery" at a very high volume and tell me what you think!

I remember being on a long solo road trip (Boston to Mississippi) and listening to this over and over again, singing/learning the words and starting it again (i.e. rewinding the cassette) every time I messed up until I got every word correct. I miss those long road trips.

Have you finished it yet? I read it about 10 years ago. I knew really nothing about him other than listening to his music my whole life. I appreciated that about 10% of the book was passages soley of him speaking to the author. On the other hand, the author attempted to force himself in the story. I lost no appreciation for Neil, but he did not come accross as someone I would really want to hang out with. He is kina Machiavellian, but most highly successful people are to a degree.

This is awesome.  I don't think it's an album though.  I've been listening to a jam session for 15 min. straight with no vocals.  It sounds like it's just some off the cuff jaming they recroded, pretty sweet.

Yeah, definitely not an album (well, with Neil, you never know), but it sure is a sweet jam video. They kick into an unreal version of Cortez about half way through.

Please, lord, give me a tour.

Thanks for posting about that, it is good to hear Neil and the Horse again.

I guess this means that the postponed Buffalo Springfield tour will now not happen.  That was a bit what I guess would be the case when I heard about it being postponed from last fall to this winter.  That's a long time for Neil to sit still and not move on.

I'm also excited about seeing the new concert film from Neil's last tour.  The solo electric stuff he was playing in '10 and '11 was amazing.

hahah interesting, i did not know that.  At about 1:30 into the video the camera pans across a control panel that has pieces of tape labeled Neil, Billy, Poncho and the last one say Briggs.  Wonder what that's all about?

Also, there are now credits on the bottom of the video, if they were there the first time I watched I didnt notice them, but they read:

"Horse Back"
Engineered and mixed by John Hanlon at Audio Casa Blanca Jan 6, 2012, assisted by Mark Humphreys and John Hausmann
Video by Ben Johnson
Music by Crazy Horse

Apparently I need more education. I just discovered Trans. Never imagined something like this existed.

Neil Young - Transformer Man (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eblFQppJfyg#)

And then there is this comment:

Back in 1989, i was walking into a movie theater on Van Ess Ave., San Francisco, with my family. The film was "HARLEM NIGHTS". Who should I bump into but NEIL YOUNG? He would have just kept walking, but I mentioned how much my son loved "TRANSFORMER MAN". His mouth dropped open, EYES LIT UP & misted over. He came back, said that he wrote "TRANS" for HIS son. I hummed TRANSFORMER MAN, my son followed up with diti-dit-dit... NEIL was SO HAPPY! He kneeled and shook my son's hand! We talked a bit.

stuck in my head all week:

NEIL YOUNG /// 6. Oh Lonesome Me - (After The Gold Rush) - (1970) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xN3Jt8C-F0A#ws)

m wards version got it stuck there then I thought about it and realized neils is superior to the original.  his is also superior to m ward's studio take.  so he, once again, is the alpha and omega.  there's a neil song for every mood you're in. love this shit.

I fucking LOVE it! The Horse is still a deep groovin' machine. Looks very promising for the rest of the album.

C'mon Neil, time to take the Horse on the road!

Just got a shipping notification for Waging Heavy Peace. To be honest, I don't even remember ordering it. But hey, should be an innaresting read!

We're entering a time of high Neil saturation actually. Book released today, he's appearing on Letterman this Thursday, tour starting up in a few weeks, and his new album with the Horse Psychedelic Pill comes out shortly after. Anyone diggin' the new tunes?

Here's a snippet of "Walk Like A Giant":

Neil Young & Crazy Horse: Walk Like A Giant (Official Video) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bemz-7fofcs#ws)

Sounds like him and Horse hopped right back on the saddle with no rust. Old Black sounds ferocious as ever.

Saw Neil and the Horse last night in London. I urge everyone reading this to go out and get tickets to this "Alchemy" tour. I forgot just how hilarious Poncho is on stage. No one has more fun than him, and it really elevates Neil's playing to a whole new level. There was nothing but good vibes and smiles on stage right from the beginning. But "Fuckin' Up" really took it to another level. Poncho was yelling at all the "motherfuckers" in the audience to "go get fucked" while Neil was all smiles as he shredded his fingers off -- really drove home the point that no band is more ROCK AND MOTHERFUCKING ROLL than Neil and the Horse.

The new tunes were great as well. On "Ramada Inn", Neil was using some far-out octave technique of playing that sounded unlike any guitar work I've ever heard from him. Neil's playing was sublime all night but this was the song that just took me to another place entirely. Made me swallow a psychedelic pill, indeed. Can't wait for the album!

I'm right with ya man, I think "Ramada Inn" is the best song Neil's put out in a long time. Seeing Neil and the Horse live over the weekend just blew me away and sent me into a fullblown nothin-but-Neil phase. It's been years since I had one of these.

His book is so damn hard to put down. I can safely say I've never read anything like it. Completely scattershot and full of rambling, but still quite entertaining.

Think I'll watch "Year of the Horse" tonight. It is a great film worth tracking down for others in a huge Horse phase right now!

Agreed, Ralph.  The new album is pretty great.

I particularly love Ramada Inn.  That song reminds me of some of the Le Noise songs in that it feels like something he could have only written with the perspective and wisdom of an old man.

I could not agree more about the love for Ramada Inn. The first time I heard it was in concert and it BLEW MY MIND. Neil's solos in this song are just out of this world. He's STILL trying new techniques on guitar after all these years. And Poncho's rhythm riffs that he starts churnin' out about half way through the song are not to be forgotten. Moving stuff.

I am just so happy to see the Horse not only together again, but ROCKIN like it was 1976! Just wish it wasn't such a long wait for the Blu-ray/vinyl. I wanna crank this sucker loud -- in high fidelity! (I guess Neil's sound quality rants in his book are getting to me)

FINALLY got to see Neil and Crazy Horse in Tuscaloosa last week. After all these years I kept missing him, or too much $$$, but this time the timing was right PLUS with Crazy Horse, so willing to drop the extra $$$. Got about 15 rows back, dead center. Did not disappoint on any level. I purposely did not read reviews so the set list would surprise me and when they laid into Powderfinger song 2, I knew I had chosen correctly (actually knew that 2 chords into the opener Love and Only Love). Totally blown away by Walk Like a Giant especially the 5 minute ending; one of my all time favorite concert moments of all time. I could listen to them do that for hours. The show was simply spectacular with the stage hands as scientists and construction workers to Pancho and Neil cuttin' up. Blew my mind. And, for the first time ever had the vision of Pancho basically being the holder of the kite string and Neil being the kite during those long journeys on Old Black. Loved their energy and how they weren't just going through the motions. I could go on and on...

we rushed the rail during the encore; no sweat as 75% of the crowd was 50 plus!

I've had "Bite the Bullet" stuck in my head for weeks! In "Waging Heavy Peace", Neil claims it is one of his favorites, and I can see why. The Horse has the spook, and Linda Ronstadt and Nicolette Larson sing their asses off! Just a great tune.

I'm with you on this, Tracy. I STILL haven't gotten to see Mr. Neil Young yet! My brother and I came close to buying tickets for his solo tour a year or so ago, but the money issue was a big problem for us both. I have enjoyed his music for more than 30 years, and he is my number 1 must see act (with Mr. Tom Waits coming in a close second). I TOO SHALL SEE THE MAN, THE MYTH, THE LEGEND MYSELF SOME DAY! I'm glad you and so many MMJ Forum members have gotten the chance to see Crazy Horse this tour.

I got Psychedelic Pill yesterday after work. My commute to work is about 45 minutes, so I got to listen to the first disc on the way home. I made my usual CD copies for use in my car last night (tacked on my 37 minute mp3 audio - converted from the studio practice jam into Cortez the Killer - that Neil posted on his Official site a few months ago as the band finished up the album - onto the end of disc 2). I like the whole album! I really like the way it starts with the more than 27 minute long Driftin' Back. The lyrics are really good. Like in his new book, Waging Heavy Peace, Neil touches on how upset he is with the way music is bought and sold these days. He hates mp3's. The part I like goes, "Don't want my mp3, Don't want my mp3, I'm driftin' back, I'm driftin' back, I'm driftin' back, I'm driftin' back, When you hear my song now, You only get 5%, You used to get it all now, You used to feel it all, Blockin' out my anger, Blockin' out my anger, Blockin' out my anger, Blockin' out my anger, I'm driftin' back..."

Speaking of Neil, I write a weekly music article for the Canadian Music Hall of Fame called "This Week in Music History". Since it was Neil's birthday earlier in the week, I wrote a big - and I hope - fun Top 5 decade-by-decade tribute in the first section of the article, foregoing a typical biography.  For those interested, check it out. I'm sure some of you will have issues to my decade-by-decade rankings, but I'm admittedly biased:

I'm PUMPED BEYOND BELIEF for the show at the ACC tonight, but I'm strongly considering making this a back-to-back effort and making the drive to Kitchener! I've just got this weeeeeeeird feeling that the Kitchener show is going to blow the Toronto show away.

Really hoping for Cortez or Like A Hurricane tonight. They've only busted each out two or three times this tour, but I'd kill to see either one of those epics.

Go to both, you may not get another chance...

Still undecided about the Kitchener show tomorrow... but the Toronto show kicked ass! Neil and the Horse were havin' a ball on stage the whole night, and the playing reflected how happy they were -- it was just sublime. Neil gave a lot of love to the crowd, saying it was "home sweet home!" The sound was perfect, the crowd was into it, and even though the setlist was similar to shows I saw earlier on this tour, this night was completely different. "Fuckin' Up" and "Ramada Inn" were highlights as usual, but "Born In Ontario" and a brand-new electric arrangement of "Helpless" stole the show, with the crowd eating up the local lyrical references in each. A show I won't soon forget. Thank you Neil, for bringing the Horse out of the paddock!

I just found this yesterday! (If you turn on the annotations, a list of all the songs with the album name and year shows up. You can click on each song and the video will skip right to it. This is very good for those who do not have all of these albums or haven't listened to some of them in a while.)

Wow, LeanneP, I just got a look at the setlist from tonight in Kitchener and it seems like you got a HELL of a show! "Farmer John" for an encore?!?!? Are you kiddin' me?!?!? That's the first time in YEARS that they've played that! I want a detailed review!  :cheesy:
Title: Re: Talkin' Bout Neil Young.....
Post by: LeanneP on Nov 22, 2012, 12:07 AM
I am very sad to say that I missed the encore.

So, are you sure you want my detailed review?

We were about 20 feet back, centre stage (well, a tiny bit stage left directly in front of Neil's mic (the actual mic!). We got there at 7pm just as the Sadies kicked off and they kicked ass: fast, furious cosmic country. Sadies are in my all time top 10. The young Good brothers Dallas and Travis pulled out their old, let's-play-each-other's-guitar-fret-parts-while-we-strum-our-own-strings schtick. We all ate it up like love-starved puppies!

Los Lobos went on just after 8pm. They played a blues-rock heavy set which blistered. This was my first time seeing them and tho I'm not super familiar with their catalog, I enjoyed the set. I much prefer when they pull out the Latin tunes but was only graced with one.

At 9pm - after 10 minutes of stage-hand dorkery (if you haven't seen this year's show, think the Rust Never Sleeps tour except the Jawas are now mad professors in lab coats and white hair) Neil, the Horse and the crew gathered on stage in two lines in front of the giant amps and an enormous Canadian flag dropped in front of the Crazy Horse backdrop. The Canadian anthem began playing. We all sang along, of course, as is our fashion as deeply proud Canucks and it was sweet to see that after 40+ years as an American guest/citizen, Neil sang along.

Up first: Love and Only Love. It was 20 minutes long. Jeebus-H-Cripes!  It just went on and on and on and I thought it would never stop!  Mind you, it rocked hard, but, well, I'm a girl, I want to dance!  I don't want to listen to feedback half the night. Hmmm, I probably should have re-thought going to this show, I suppose.

Powderfinger was good and least a normal length, helping me focus less on how I'm supposed to maintain a dancing rhythm through the guitar assault of Pancho and Young and more on how much I'm enjoying the tune.

Does Neil play I Was Born In Ontario at the shows that aren't in Ontario? This was a crowd favourite mostly because most of us there were definitely born in Ontario. I spent a lot of time thinking, "so was I, ya big dork!" in my head in honour of my 9yo and tried not to focus on how much I hate the lyrics and melody. I never have been able to separate myself from focusing on lyrics/melody first. My husband alienlanes claims he doesn't pay attention to lyrics. I think he's trying to cover up how much the melody sucks. Good guitar playing, tho.

Walk Like a Giant. Hmmm. That whistling is totally not even live!  Pancho is hardly even pursing his lips and Neil forgets to whistle half the time and the sound of the whistle never changes. Walk, walk, walk, walk. Gah!  Dagnabbit I hate this album! That being said, this probably the best song on the album. It's a nice touch that they revisit the coda from Hey Hey, My My (Black).

Neil walks out on stage alone with an acoustic guitar and his mic'ed harmonica holder. I bet this will be good. I shove my hands in alienlanes' back pockets and get ready to dance. Hey, did I mention that my husband was standing in front of me? He'd maneuvered me so that I stood behind a 6'4" giant over whose shoulder I peeped half the show and then to a spot directly behind himself!  He never even noticed till I pointed it out nearly 3 hours into the show!  Marriage, eh?  Anyway: Needle and the Damage Done!  Huzzah!  The crowd was so thankful, we gently sang along. It was beautiful.

He followed up with Twisted Road, which I told alienlanes was called I Was Born in Ontario, Pt 2. I know Neil had a heart attack or something and stopped smoking pot in the name of health, but maybe he could just run these lyrics and melodies by someone who is high?  It can't hurt these tunes any, can it? And, don't get me wrong, I LOVE some pot, but do people have to smoke it continuously throughout the show? I mean, can't you smoke up in your Taurus* before you go into the arena? That stuff's effects lasts hours!  You don't need to smoke pot for four hours!  (n.b. We drive a Taurus. We didn't, however, get high in it.)

Singer Without A Song followed with Neil taking up on an old upright piano. More of his love of performance art ensued when a pretty young woman  (inviting numerous catcalls from the stoned and drunk jocks) with a guitar case wandered back and forth across the stage looking at big stuff pensively. Meh. That pot smell won't go away. It's not smoke, it's just smell. And if it's not pot smell I'm breathing in, it's patchouli, which I hate!

Ramada Inn went on forever!  Jeepers!  Again with the horrible lyrics. I just hate this latter day stuff. Those guitars are awesome, of course, but I'm having trouble keeping it together. I can't seem to breathe enough oxygen and I'm starting to feel like I might faint. I bite the bullet and tell alienlanes we need to move. I must have looked white as a sheet because he quickly marched me straight through to the back of the arena, found an usher and got me a seat on the player's bench.

Cinnamon Girl was fantastic and it only takes me a couple minutes to gulp down enough cool air that I'm starting to feel normal again. I immediately feel guilty about dragging us out of the pit. I mean, I could make out every contour of Neil's old turkey neck!  How could I give up those spots?! If only they'd loaded a few early tunes into the middle of the show, I might have felt compelled to hold on. Oh well.

As Fuckin' Up starts, two uniformed St John's Ambulance people approach me. I am no longer hearing much of the show because I have to affirm that no, I am not stoned, no, I am not drinking, no, I'm not pregnant and no, I'm not diabetic or have any other underlying condition that could compromise my stamina. However, yes, I am really hungry! Alienlanes leans over the boards and suggests we take off early. It is 10:37pm and he says Fuckin' Up is gonna last 20 minutes, guaranteed. I made sure he was ok with leaving and we took off. It was still playing as we walked up out of the floor area, bought a red arrowhead style Crazy Horse shirt, debated about buying a burnt umber coloured '78 tour shirt, and walked out the doors.

We didn't hear Mr Soul start up or we might have run back to the floor. That means we also missed Hey Hey, My My (into the black) and Farmer John, both a real shame.  We did, however, drive through almost total fog to a ridiculous corporate restaurant (Moose Winooski's) where we sat beside a fire and ate a leisurely midnight supper and enjoyed the fact that we didn't have to keep a 5yo from running around and a 9yo from calling his brother names.

Despite my cranky review - teehee! - I really enjoyed myself. I danced all night until my feet got so sore I could've cried and then got really dizzy from the stupid people who only go to concerts once a year and have to blow their drinking and stoning loads all in one evening. Neil himself is amazing on stage. He's lost none of his fire, his playing is fantastic and edgy and he stalks and stomps around the stage in that signature bouncy way of his with a look that suggests he's at the edge of madness, which is exactly where a guy of his passion for music ought to be.

If you don't like over-the-top guitars, then you shouldn't go see Neil & Crazy Horse. The one thing they've been consistent with over 40-plus years is uncompromising long and loose feedback-drenched jams. Neil at his most unpredictable and inspired - and I think best - is with Crazy Horse. Long Live The Horse!!

Yeah, thanks for the heads up on Rust Radio.  Very awesome.

So is the fact that I've got some Neil and the Horse tomorrow night in Boston.  Getting there early to catch Everest, too.  Any forumites going?  I'll be in the pit; look for the shiny dome!

I just checked my concert ticket archive... last time I saw NY & CH... Feb. 28, 1991!

Hey John, can't wait to hear your thoughts.  I'm seeing Neil and the Horse tomorrow in NYC at MSG.
I've got a meeting in 4 minutes, so...

Neil Young and Crazy Horse at TD Garden in Boston last night.  Everest opened for a short, decent set.  Really enjoyed them at T5#5, missed 'em at Forecastle.  Looks like a new drummer.  Patti Smith was cool.  I really was not familiar with her but enjoyed her set.  I may look into her back catalog.  Man, she likes to spit on stage!

Neil and CH were awesome, but tested my endurance.  Long jams were classic, the guys were clearly having fun on stage, and some of the distortion was epic and beautiful.  I hadn't seen NY & CH since 1991.  After tonight, I'm equally torn between following them on tour or waiting another 21 years.  It was really good, but requires patience.  For anyone there who was not a long-time fan, it was probably a rough night.  I don't have a setlist, but the length of songs means a short list.  Cinnamon Girl, Needle and Damage Done, Ramada Inn, Farmer John encore... oops, late for my meeting!

I dunno; Neil Young & Crazy Horse are in a category of musicians
where I'd pay 12 bucks to watch them collectively (or individually, like a tag team) hold their breath(s)

I may be biased because in my mind Neil Young can do no wrong, but last night at MSG Neil and Crazy Horse proved they are the greatest fucking hard rock group ever.  The jams were long and loud, and full of fuzz and sludge.  I hung on every note.  The Psychedelic Pill songs worked great, Ramada Inn was a real highlight for me, but hearing them play songs like Cinnamon Girl and Mr. Soul, that are nearly twice as old as I am, really put things in perspective.  Man i really fucking enjoyed being able to see that and only wish I was going to more shows this tour.  I will say that I would have loved to have heard Farmer John in the encore instead of Roll Another Number, but what are you gonna do.  Long Live The Horse!!

The MSG show sounds awesome! Was "Roll Another Number" the only encore? Any "Cortez" sprinkled in? The setlist STILL hasn't been posted on SugarMountain, which is weird considering most shows have had the setlists updated the night of!

Post by: manonthemoon on Dec 01, 2012, 03:35 PM
Honestly the only thing that saved that show last night for me was the Cinnamon Girl through - Cortez as I was severly underwhelmed up until that point.
Everest reminded me of BOH and thats never a good thing, Patti was meh at best, and the crowd was horrible.  We were beside a group of 50 to 60 year olds who talked through the entire Neil set and yelled harvest moon everytime a song was over.

I really liked Walk like a giant until he went into that 20 minute wierd note session that I don't think anyone was feeling.  Plus Fucking up has always been my favorite Neil song, but they turned it into an extended jam that really didn't add anything to the experience IMO.

Overall it was a solid show, but the real kicker for me is the price tag as I have been to 5 shows this month and the other 4 shows total cost less than this one show and I was at least as entertained as last night with JTB, and blow away by Trail of dead and Red Fang.  Granted the crowds were much better at the latter three shows which helped out.

Glad to catch Neil as he has always been one of my faves, but can't say I wasn't a little disappointed overall as I was expecting a great show.

I definitely agree with these points.  The ending of Walk Like a Giant is more than a tad excessive, and feels drawn out just for the sake of being drawn out, rather than really needing to go on that long.

I also agree with your point about Fuckin' Up.  The drawn out ending/vocal vamp on that really did nothing for me and killed the momentum of that song, which was great up to that point.

Your post also reminded me that I totally forgot about the Trail of Dead show.

TOD was awesome at Rock and Roll.  I swear everytime I hear them live, even with the newer lineup, I am shocked at how good they are live.  Jason and the bassist were in the crowd for Caterwald.  Conrad then got the crowd up on stage for the encore, it was awesome.

I enjoyed at first, but then it got to long for me and the wife was none to impressed with it at all.  Plus people around us were chanting play a song during the last 10 minutes of it so there was that affecting us as well.

I also agree about the extended outros to Walk Like a Giant and Fuckin' Up.  They went on way too long and really didn't add much after a couple of minutes.  We could have had another couple of great songs from the catalog instead.

I was taking a video of Giant and my hand almost fell off - a total of almost 26 min!  My camera spit the bit after 17 min and kicked the last 9 into another file.

I'll try to post the 3 videos I took soon but I've had issues uploading so far for some reason.

I really liked Walk like a giant until he went into that 20 minute wierd note session that I don't think anyone was feeling.  Plus Fucking up has always been my favorite Neil song, but they turned it into an extended jam that really didn't add anything to the experience IMO.

I am also in the "outros were too damn long" club for exactly the same reasons the rest of you have stated except for GO4IT's broken hand/camera problem, although I can certainly see how that would be a problem.

Again, I'm feeling vindicated for my review.

Funny thing is, I really, really love when a band grabs a groove and just keeps pounding it over and over. It gets to a point where the repetition gives you a kind of psychedelic experience. But that wasn't really what was going on with Neil and the Horse. Clearly they are monsters on guitar, but they didn't make it groove well.

Finally got the three videos up.  These are taken with my new camera in the seats right behind GA in the center but I was about 100yds away since the GA floor was so big.  So, video quality isn't that good since I had to go into digital zoom for much of the time.  Setting to HD quality on YouTube definitely sharpens them up.

On the good side, I was right behind the soundboard so the sound was very good there and I think the camera captured it pretty well.

As reported above, I "only" captured the first 17 min and change of Walk Like a Giant on this file. I have the other 8 and a half minutes if anyone really wants to see it

Enjoy!

Check back after you've sat through it four times in March.

I understand what you are saying, though, and on paper it sounds great.  As it plays out, though, I just don't think Neil is very good at extended free-form noise jams.  I love the feedback endings he will do on songs, but this is a different thing entirely.

I love seeing bands that are good at it do extended noise jams (Spiritualized, Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine, etc.), but to be good they need to build and have momentum.  The Walk Like a Giant ending has neither in my opinion.

At the Fairfax, VA show, there were several points where it could have ended, but Neil just keeps it going, but not because there is any momentum to it.  It just feels like he is extending it out that long because he has decided it needs to be that long.

Check out this live Spiritualized video for a noise jam done right that has momentum and purpose to it.

I hear ya man; different strokes for different folks I guess. They could still be ending Walk in Tuscaloosa and I'd still be there! I am just glad they enjoy ending like that b/c it spoke to me deeply.

Some things can't be tied up into pretty, little concise bows. Plus, the song's about a Giant, ya dig?

Interesting I never thought of the end of Walk Like a Giant as footsteps.  Maybe I'm dense, but that makes more sense and is kind of cool.

Actually, GO4IT, despite what I've said here, I am interested in checking out your video of the end of WLAG.  My group was on the rail for the Fairfax show, so I'm interested to see how it sounded from another perspective.

I watched your other videos, and also shared the links with my friends who had gone to the show.  You did a really nice job on them.

Ramada Inn went on forever!  Jeepers!  Again with the horrible lyrics. I just hate this latter day stuff.

I know your review was quite lengthy...but this is the part that really jumped out at me.  Ramada Inn has blown me away ever since I first heard it at Red Rocks last August.  It's my favorite new Neil song in years...probably since It's A Dream came out in 2005.  Every Neil fan that I know loves this song...even my friend Paul who dismissed the rest of Psychedelic Pill and skipped the tour.
I don't think folks should love everything Neil does (I sure don't although he is my favorite artist of all time), but I think Ramada Inn is a classic and can't understand why anyone who would buy a ticket to see Neil Young wouldn't like it.

purchased tix yesterday to Neil & the Horse in a 5000 seater here in Melbourne.  Promoter is calling it 'an intimate' experience. Not sure 5000 counts as intimate but I never thought I'd see em in a smallish venue. Tour starts in 14 days. Can not wait...

You are a lucky man! I'm wondering if they'll change up the setlist any from the 2012 tour. I'm thinking there'll be some significant differences. Wouldn't be surprised if Neil drops one or two of the Pill tunes, adds another original, and another oldie! Then again, I also wouldn't be surprised if the set goes untouched. Oh, that Neil!

I reckon it'll be pretty similar. Cornerstones of the set with still be WLAG and Ramada Inn. I'm more than happy with that though.

Love "Journeys"! I don't know which portion I like more -- the journey segments, or the performance itself. I was at the first Massey Hall show of the two they taped, and somehow, the sound on this film BLOWS AWAY the sound that was at the actual show! It sounds... mammoth! I went to the premiere a few years ago, and Neil and Jonathan Demme were talking about how the film used digital recording techniques that had never been used before -- and man, you can hear it! What a great sounding film. "Leia", "You Never Call", "Love and War", "I Believe In You" -- so many highlights!

I love the journey segments though because, being from Toronto, it was SO cool to see Neil and Demme driving down the very same roads I'm on every day!

Whoa. Neil's most recent setlist might be one of the best all-time. After several dozen dates over the last half-year or so, the tour had settled into a comfortable (and mostly predictable) groove, and then he busts this setlist out of nowhere:

1.   Love And Only Love
2.   Powderfinger
3.   Born In Ontario
4.   Walk Like A Giant
5.   Hole In The Sky
6.   Heart Of Gold
7.   Twisted Road
8.   Singer Without A Song
9.   Ramada Inn
10.   Cinnamon Girl
11.   Cortez The Killer
12.   Dangerbird
13.   Barstool Blues
14.   Prisoners Of Rock 'n' Roll
15.   Opera Star
16.   Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black)
17.   Sedan Delivery
---
18.   Like A Hurricane

OPERA STAR?! BARSTOOL BLUES?! DANGERBIRD?!?! Are you kidding me?!

Ralph, I am so incredibly jealous that you got to attend this show. But feel so very fortunate that someone 'round here was lucky enough to be there! This show is one "When You Dance" away from being the DEFINITIVE Crazy Horse set.

I've been thinking about it all day, and if I was guaranteed they'd play this exact setlist, I'd throw down $300 for a spot on the rail. No wait, $400! C'mon Neil, call it the "Melbourne Tour" and bring this show back to North America for sell-outs coast to coast!
Title: Re: Talkin' Bout Neil Young.....

It was pretty special. This show was added last minute to the schedule. There were probably only 4000 people there. It really seemed like it was going to be just like the last 5 shows. We were waiting for Fuckin Up to start when the first notes of Cortez rang out. Assumed everything would go back to normal after that. It was after Dangerbird when Neil started Barstool Blues that it became obvious this was going to be special. Neil was just making it up as he went along. You could tell even the band didn't know what to expect next. And the choices were so quick, one song would finish and bang - straight into the next one. We'd had both Opera Star and PORnR in previous encores but they weren't played like they were in this show. Then HHMM came and we assumed that was it as it had been the main set closer but then came an amazing Sedan Delivery. And all I can say about the 18 minute LAH is if a recording of this show surfaces listen to this. It was extraordinary. All up it lasted just on 3 hours.

We're all assuming normality will return tonight for the 2nd Melbourne show. It's back to a 'normal' sized venue. But man, after the other night there is a feeling that anything may happen...

Ohhhhhh my GOD these setlists from down under have been UNREAL.

Neil busted out SURFER JOE & MOE THE SLEAZE last night. Probably my number one Neil guilty pleasure song. I don't see why Reactor gets trashed so much, I love that album. Man I hope they are recording these shows. Or they bring the tour 'round back to North America. These shows have been legendary.

More American dates in the fall are virtually guaranteed -- well, as guaranteed as anything can be in Neil's world. A few weeks ago, Ticketmaster posted a show for September 3rd in Detroit at the Fox, but took it down after about a week. With Interlocken falling right in that timeframe, it would seem logical that a handful of dates would also be sprinkled in. Hopefully theatre shows! I am very tempted to hit up Interlocken, even though like most of you I have NO interest in any of the other bands, but I will wait and see these other Neil dates before pulling the trigger. Regardless of what other dates Neil adds, this Interlocken does sound like a pretty damn cool fest.

i totally feel that, but with the rest of the line up containing SCI, Further and (possibly) WSP, I really dont see this line up being something that many ZBB fans will spend a ton of money on. Plus, its Zac Brown of the ZBB, not the ZBB

plus, for me personally, there is nothing better than a camping festival. especially one not in the middle of hottest month of the year.

Don't know if I should just start an Interlocken thread, but just got announced that WSP got added (GASP!), but they are playing one full set with John Fogerty, so that's pretty cool! Looks like a lot of the bands will be playing multiple sets, and Neil and the Horse will play an "extended set", whatever that means. If they are actually locked in for a three-hour set, fuck my finances, I'm going!

Did you actually see this in writing somewhere about Neil playing an extended set?  If so, can you point me to it?

I'm with you that if this means we get something like that Melbourne show I'm going to this for sure.

I saw this "extended set" nugget on Relix, in this article:

http://www.relix.com/news/2013/05/21/interlocken-adds-widespread-panic-and-john-fogerty-furthur-to-play-workingman-s-dead (http://www.relix.com/news/2013/05/21/interlocken-adds-widespread-panic-and-john-fogerty-furthur-to-play-workingman-s-dead)

However, I'd hardly take Relix as gospel. This extended set mention is nowhere to be found on any other Interlocken press releases.

Just got announced today that Neil & the Horse will be headlining Harvest Picnic -- a one day festival about an hour west of Toronto. I'm very tempted to pull the trigger on tickets, but I'll wait for the inevitable tour announcement. With this show (on August 31st), plus Interlocken the following weekend, the previously-leaked Detroit date on September 3rd makes a lot of sense. And as fun as these festival dates would be, it'd be hard to top an intimate evening with the Horse at the Fox!

It's a go:

I know the area very well. My wife grew up in a town nearby. The conservation area is just north of the blue collar city of Hamiton. If anyone needs advice on what to do and where to stay, let me know. There's nothing close by for lodgings, but you can camp there. The towns in the surrounding area are nice, even Hamilton has good parts.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse will play the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY on September 2.  Patti Smith and her Band will open the show.

Tickets go on sale this Friday at noon Eastern time.

This show has potential to be one of the most special Neil gigs in years. The Capitol is such a gem of a theater.

But oiiii, it's gonna cost ya! I am determined to hit up one last Horse show this fall -- deciding between the Cap show or one in Ontario. The Cap trip will cost three times as much, but has the chance to be much more than three times as special. However, I wonder if Neil will stick to the (mostly) static setlists he's been rocking this tour? If it were guaranteed he'd play shows like he did on the "Down Under" leg, I'd be in for the Cap at double the price! But as for now, I've got some deep thinkin' to do...

Anyone here hitting up the Cap show for sure???

I'd say I'm pretty likely for the Cap show, but I want to see the full tour dates to decide for sure.  If he also plays a decent venue in Philly (such as the Tower Th.) I could see doing that instead as it's much less of a trek for me than getting to the Cap.

I am if I can get a ticket on Friday.  I'm hoping to get a GA standing ticket.  This venue is one of my favorites in the country and is less than an hour's drive from me.  If I get a GA standing ticket, I will absolutely be on the rail for this show.

Welp, there's an impulse purchase for ya...

IN for Neil at the Cap! Woo!

However, just thinkin' here... Neil is playing at the Cap on the 2nd, and in Ottawa on the 4th. That leaked Ticketmaster date was for September 3rd in Detroit, and Neil has not played three nights in a row in a long time. Never on this current Crazy Horse tour. Maybe the Fox date fell through? I'm sure we'll find out soon, but something to think about...

I feel for you, Robb.  Maybe he will fit the Detroit show in on another date.  Seems hard to think he would scrap a city he was planning on coming to.  He also has a history with the Fox Th., and was probably pretty psyched to play there again.

If tickets for the Cap go onsale Friday, I'm very surprised we don't know the whole tour schedule yet.

I'm very sorry to even speculate so negatively robb! You never know!

I still expect a small tour, and I imagine they are releasing these dates one at a time for legal reasons. First Interlocken, probably because they are paying the most cash and want an exclusivity window. Then the two shows in Ontario, which were announced about a week apart. Then this Cap show, the first theatre show of the tour, and one perhaps the Cap wanted an exclusivity window on to drum up hype -- it worked on me, I'm thinking this show is a big deal when it could just be another theatre show in a run full of them!

When it comes down to it though, this is Neil we're talking about. No one really knows what is going on with this tour itinerary -- nor will we, at least until he steps on the stage.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but according to this interview, it looks like the Horse will be put out to pasture after the dates that are currently scheduled. I really hope they keep "Sedan Delivery" and "Surfer Joe and Moe the Sleaze" in the setlists for their only North American dates.

Who knows where Neil goes after this, but it looks like these select North American dates in the fall are not to be missed...

Where does it say that these are the last ever shows that Neil will do with CH?  It says that Billy doesn't know.  Which is what members of CH (and all of Neil's other bands) always say.  I don't think they're playing it close to the vest btw...I think Neil doesn't promise his bands anything as far as the next album/tour.
Title: Re: Talkin' Bout Neil Young.....
Post by: oistheone on Jul 24, 2013, 04:44 PM
I didn't say that the article said these were the last EVER shows with Neil & the Horse! Billy simply says that he believes the tour will be done after those dates in September. He "hopes" there will be a next time after that but he says "I don't know... I really don't know." When September comes, they will have been riding this tour for over a year, which is an eternity in Neil's world. Like you said, NO ONE knows when it comes to Neil, but it doesn't exactly sound promising.

I feel like the best approach to seeing Neil shows is to take every opportunity you can while it's being offered, because you never know when it'll all end.

I agree completely with this statement.
I just tried to think of when Neil has toured 3 consecutive years with Crazy Horse and I couldn't think of any time in his career when that has happened.  So I wouldn't expect any Neil & CH shows in 2014.  Though it is Neil and he could surprise us!

Huge bummer about the canceled dates. Selfishly, I really hope Poncho's hand heals in time for the fall dates. But I have my doubts...

8/31 Dundas, ON - Greenbelt Harvest Picnic
9/02 Port Chester, NY - Capitol Theatre
9/04 Ottawa, ON - Ottawa Folk Festival
9/07 Arrington, VA - Interlocken Music Festival
For now, Farm Aid at Saratoga Springs on September 21 is still on. Official word from the band: "We are sorry for any inconvenience this causes to our fans or the Festivals where we were scheduled to appear. As you must be, we too are disappointed at this unfortunate turn of events."

Looks like Neil is doing a four-night run at Carnegie Hall in early January. No word about what kind of evening it will be, but I assume it's just Neil solo. (In my dreams, Neil hired the Jacket as his backing band after the massive success of the Bridge collaborations, and I'm front row at every show.)

Verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry tempted to hit this up.

The debate I always have with these multi-night runs is which night to go to. I already know that all four nights are out of my price range, but one and mayyyybe even two would definitely be feasible. It'd be cool to see the first night because of the surprise factor. But sometimes the energy goes up as the run goes on!

Another whore here, driven to new heights by the collaborations of the past weekend.

Scored first row balcony, last two seats on the right (where it curves around) for Friday night.

So, if Neil asked Jim to join him, would he come to Carnegie Hall?

The sample track I heard from that Cellar Door album is pretty intriguing -- the piano version of Cinnamon Girl. Sounds like the audio quality on this release is going to be top notch. Neil's voice sounded amazing, can't wait to spin it.

I do wish that some Archives Vol. II-era albums would start to trickle out, but it's Neil, so I'll take whatever I can get.

I'm also pretty excited about the news that apparently Neil recorded an album of covers at Third Man. Any Neil/Jack interaction intrigues me greatly, even if all Jack did was unlock the door to let Neil into the building.

WARNING: I'M SURE NO ONE CARES BUT...

I received the ticket I bought off StubHub for the sold out Massey Hall show, and it turns out it's not only an amazing seat with no obstructions, but the face value of the ticket is $70 more than what I paid! I just don't understand why someone would sell a ticket to a sold out show below face value, so I'm understandably quite apprehensive that this might be a canceled ticket or something. Worst case scenario I'll get a refund, but there's nothing worse than crashing from a pre-concert high (both literal and figurative) when your tickets won't get you in the door. Please keep me in your prayers.

Is it a paper print out ticket?  I've heard stories of people buying a ticket from Stubhub and getting denied once the ticket was scanned because that ticket had already been scanned.  Basically meaning that whoever sold them it just made a copy of their ticket and made sure to get there first.  Ya know what I mean?

Know exactly what ya mean! That's what I'm fearing. It's a "hard" ticket printed from the box office, but I figure the sellers ol' "call Ticketmaster and report the ticket as lost and get a new ticket" scam is still in play here.

On another note, how awesome is it that Neil just busts out an awesome show seemingly out of nowhere? Neil's made a career of defying expectations, and fans walked in last night having NO idea what to expect. He didn't have an album to promote. He's been toying with covers. And what does he play? Pretty much what "fans" have been asking for for forty years -- just Neil on stage, playing hits for over two hours. Even when giving the crowd "what they want", he still manages to surprise. Gotta love Neil.

So who's going to the last show tomorrow?

Spinning After the Gold Rush vinyl now, the copy I bought in 1972, getting ready for the trek up north tomorrow.  From all reports I've heard this week, sounds like it's going to be quite a night.

I love this. That's why we go to shows. That feeling only comes at certain shows. Sometimes it takes you by surprise when it happens. After reading reviews of the previous show I thought you would get a good one. I'm so glad it was better than that. Tell us more when you can.

I don't want to say any spoilers in case anyone who might see this is going tonight, but it was over two hours of solo acoustic Neil.  The setlist was a great mix of crowd pleasers and interesting choices to satisfy hardcore fans.  The venue is just perfect for this show and Neil's playing and singing were incredibly strong.

There is a good article on Rolling Stone's website reviewing the first show.  It gives away tons of setlist detail, so I didn't want to read it until after I saw the show, but now that I've read it it's a very good review.

I disagree with that review, though, about the 2010/2011 solo tour being ultimately unsatisfying.  I can understand why that show didn't please everyone, but I think the Le Noise material is fantastic, and hearing Neil play solo electric guitar for the first time was a serious revelation.

All you folks enjoying these Carnegie shows are making me seriously jealous! These setlists have me salivating for Sunday. I'm really hoping Neil sticks with this 20+ song format for the Canadian shows, but he'll be bringing Diana Krall in tow as opposed to no opener, so I'm preparing myself for a shorter Neil set.

Is there anything better than being in a hardcore Neil Young phase right in the middle of one of the coldest winters in recent memory? Neil and winter jive like few other musicians and seasons.

Good lord, that Massey Hall show tonight was magic! Electric connection between Neil and the audience the entire show. Just a very positive spiritual scene from beginning to end. Neil was all smiles all night! And"Pocahontas", oh man! What an awesome surprise! That easily ranks as the number one Neil show I've ever seen. I had a "direct eye contact" moment with Neil that felt like an electric shock. I'll be buzzin' off that one for a long time. What a night!

Also, Diana Krall kicked ass.

I'm really excited about A Letter Home and can't wait to get some more details. The album is heavily rumored to be a Record Store Day release, probably as some sort of gimmick pressing in true TMR fashion. I've heard things as crazy as the entire album being pressed as singles and you have to collect them all. I'm really hoping that the album gets a regular digital release as well, because some of the songs that are speculated to be on the album ("Changes" and "Needle of Death" especially) were among the highlights of Neil's latest setlists. Can't wait!

Just spent the last 20 minutes watching the infomercials on that Kickstarter page. As an appreciator of super-high-quality-sound and also a hardcore Neil fan, this device interests me greatly. However, I just don't know if I can justify $400. I'm sure the quality is fantastic, but I have fantastic quality in my home setup already through my records and Blu-Ray and whatnot. And do I really NEED uber-high quality while I'm running around? I guess it would be nice to have a device on which I could play all my FLACs. But I'm worried that this whole thing is a scam by Warner to get suckers to pay $20+ for albums they already have.

I'm torn.

I feel you on the $400, but thats essentially the price of an iPod.  As far as it being some sort of scam, I dont think Neil would put years of blood, sweat and hardwork into developing this thing if it were anything other than to advance the quality of music people listen to. So while I wont be going out and getting one anytime soon, only because I'm broke as fuck, I'd love to hear some user reviews.

I know some folks on this forum went to Neil's show at Carnegie Hall, they just added more signed posters to the kickerstarter linked above, $100 donation.  I'm assuming it's signed by Neil Young, but the description is a little vague, it says signed Neil Young poster.  I assume it means signed BY Neil, but could also mean signed by the artist (although looks to be a Hatch Show print, so artist signed wouldn't make sense).

Good lord, what a setlist. "Thrasher"!! "Philadelphia"?!?! Are you kidding me?! How heartbreaking was the "Philadelphia" performance on a scale of getting choked up to crying uncontrollably? What a religious experience that must have been. I wouldn't trade the show I saw at Massey a few months ago for anything, but goddamn, this setlist has all the gems that I was hoping to finally see but were for some reason cut -- "Flying On The Ground Is Wrong", "Goin' Back" and my ultimate white whale "Harvest Moon", which I somehow haven't heard live despite seeing Neil a dozen times.

Thrasher has long been one of, if not the, favorite Neil song of mine.  Absolutely my highlight of the night.  I later read that when he played it two nights prior it was the first time he had played it in 36 years!  I had no idea.

Philadelphia was definitely beautiful too.  Amazing show.

A Letter Home, the covers album produced with Jack White is finally out! Only for sale at Third Man at the moment. Wasn't even announced! Guess I shouldn't have expected anything else from Neil and Jack. Can't wait to listen to this, the tracklist is a doozy! The covers Neil has been performing on tour sound incredible. Audio quality be damned, this is going to be a good record.

I picked the covers album up Saturday at Third Man.  They didn't even have them out in the bins.  I noticed they put them up for sale on their website Friday evening (sold out there now) so I asked the cashier on RSD and they had a box of them behind the counter.  The sound quality makes this even better.  It has a very timeless quality to it, like it could have been recorded in the 1940's and discovered in a box of reels in a basement somewhere.  The first track on each side is a "letter home" where he's talking to "momma" and they're very cute and actually kind of moving.  The covers were all great.  Girl From the North Country and On the Road Again were awesome.  The packaging is great too of course.  Cardboard outer sleeve, and lyrics and notes on the inside.  I've heard other songs from the TMR recording booth, and they were very rough (both my own recording and the Willie Nelson one that came out in the Vault package), but they clearly did some work with these to make it sound okay while still sounding like the ancient technology it is.  Highly recommended!

Record (vinyl) stores received fresh copies of A Letter Home today! I had checked with Better Days Records in Louisville last week to see if they would be getting any. They got some in today, and I picked up my reserved copy right after work. I'm glad I went ahead and got one now, instead of getting the deluxe box set next month. (I've been spending too much money on music these days, so I won't be getting the more expensive version.)

I LOVE A Letter Home! Listened to it for the first time last night and I'm blown away! This is like some sort of lost relic from another time. Neil sounds like he could be 20! The sound quality doesn't bother me one bit. Still can't believe Neil Young and Jack White recorded together. The Everly Brothers cover sounded fantastic! Loved the "letters" to his mother and the post-song banter too. Hearing Neil and Jack laugh after a song made me smile like the giddy kid I am. "That's a funky one!"

There's something very personal about this record. It's very warm and inviting. Some of Neil's work over the last decade seems a bit forced -- and I say that as a big fan -- but this album feels like a complete artistic expression. I love it!

"Neil Young, Crazy Horse Bassist Billy Talbot Suffers Mild Stroke
Musician will be forced to miss group's upcoming European tour

By Andy Greene

Neil Young and Crazy Horse bassist Billy Talbot has suffered a mild stroke and will not be able to perform with the band on their upcoming European tour. "Talbot's doctors expect him to make a full recovery," the group said in a statement. "They have advised Talbot to sit this tour out and recover his strength." Neil Young's longtime bassist Rick Rosas will play in his place."

That's awful news about Billy, but it's great to hear that he's expected to make a full recovery. When I first saw this news, I thought for sure the tour would be canceled and that this whole Crazy Horse reunion is cursed! First a broken hand, now a stroke? Very interesting to see that they will go forward without Billy -- yet they wouldn't without Poncho. These shows are shaping up to be pretty damn unique with Rick Rosas on bass and also two back-up harmony singers. Very interested to see what these setlists look like!

Harvest Moon is absolutely one of my favotie songs of all time.  I played it and sang it to my husband for his 40th birthday (16 years ago).  His cousine improvised the harmonica.
I have a twin brother (God rest his soul), and it was one of his favorite songs as well.
The first time I remember hearing it is the same time that Jim heard it - on Saturday night live.
Beautiful song and I seem to always want to play it in early fall - go figure.
