My Morning Jacket

hes the master of macabre, or whatever the hell you want call him, but hes fucking great.  cave is definitely one of the best lyricists and storytellers in modern music and will go down in the books that way, at least i think.  he does generally follow the same schtick his whole career, but theres still plenty of variety and progress in his work.  im one of the most anti-religion people out there, but his bellowings about god, the bible, jesus etc. are some of his best songs.  

i know ive seen lots of admiration for him around, but who else immerses their dark soul in the crazy mind of nick cave?

hmmm, i didnt care for nocturma overall, but it did have some great songs.  ive read 'and the ass saw the angel' which i say he had a thesaurus stuck up his ass while writing.  ill have to check out that book though.  ive heard its a sexual experience to see him live.  nick cave & the bad seeds are in my top 3 acts to see live, although i couldnt tell you the other 2.  

i think FROM HER TO ETERNITY still holds as my favourite.  NO MORE SHALL WE PART still blows my mind, and i think ABATTOIR BLUES is one of his single best discs of material, ever.

Whilst I agree that Nocturama is possibly Nick's worst I still wouldn't call it a bad record.

I read an interview with him in Mojo earlier this year (maybe it was late last year?). Apparently he puts on a suit and goes to his office to write songs as if it were a regular 9 to 5 job.
I thought that was cool.  8)

b-sides collection is very good, still working through it all though.  its cheap too, i paid $24.99, and its a full 3cd set.

Ever seen him live?

Yeah, saw him live last year. What a show. What a presence that man has. He went on stage and it's electricity from the start to the end. The Bad Seeds are really big sounding, a real wall of sound.
The little gospel choir added a beautiful touch, also in old classics like Do You Love Me.
My favorite moment was when they tapped that gong to start Red Right Hand and the crowd went nuts.
Oh and they ended with The Mercy Seat, damn cool.

I think Live Seeds is my favorite album, because it has that kick-ass version of Papa Won't Leave You Henry.

The acoustic stuff on the b-sides box is really impressive. City Of Refuge, The Mercy Seat, Jack The Ripper... Brilliant versions.

I have that.  I really enjoyed watching it, considering that I had never seen a single Nick Cave video before then.  Okay, maybe one or two.. I think?

The God is In The House dvd is great, too.  It's always nice to bring a Cave concert into your living room, wouldn't you say?  He is high atop my concert-must-sees list.  The band rocks, oh my goodness, I could imagine..

Haven't had chance to listen to it yet but am very excited.

Coincidently, on the ride back from Atlanta, my friend had her IPod on and one of the artists she had playing was Nick Cave.  I'm not all that familiar with him, but know that I've liked every thing I've heard (mostly on XM Radio), and whatever she was playing was perfect for the long ride home.

you should definitely get LET LOVE IN, even though it has a few songs i can't stand.  the others more than make up for it though, and that album is one of my all time favourites.  if you really dig the grinderman disc, go for some early stuff.  my personal favourite in the nick cave catalogue is FROM HER TO ETERNITY.  it's straight up raw, though.

bugger it i had i long post nearly finished, and my computer had to restart.... hm.

anyway, i love nick cave. i saw nc & the bad seeds the first week after i moved to melbourne (2002), and while the venue wasn't the greatest (festival hall, claim to fame that its the venue the beatles played in the early 60s) but it's still one of the most impressive gigs i've ever been to. i'm glad i got to see the bad seeds while blixa was still a member, we were treated to a lot of ear-shattering screaming courtesy of mr bargeld... :)

i only have a best of, and and no more shall we part. the best of is a great collection... don't normally go for them, but you can't go wrong here....

even apart from the music, he's a pretty talented man - he's written poetry, at least one novel, and if you can get your hands on it, i would HIGHLY recommend seeing his film "the proposition". one of the best depictions of late-colonial australia / bushrangers / treatment of aboriginals / english rule / the outback etc that i've EVER seen. its a pretty confronting and quite brutal film in a lot of ways, but its just amazing. the score (which nick did with warren ellis) is equally amazing. one of the things i most liked about the film was that there is no black & white to the situation, or to the behaviour of the characters - you can see the good & bad in each character, in the way they react to situations.... very complex and realistic

Very much looking forward to hearing the new album, but more than that, the possibility of NC + Bad Seeds touring the US. As far as I know, they didn't make it over here to support their last album, at least not the Bay Area. Grinderman came through last year, and they played some Bad Seeds songs after running through the Grinderman catalouge (kicking myself that I missed that one).

Nick Cave is one of the most exciting and important musical artists in the world today. He's such an intriguing guy to me, I love reading interviews with him. And the Bad Seeds just keep sounding better...

Boatman's Call is also excellent.  And Grinderman. In fact, Nick's been pretty consistently excellent for aeons... I was just late in picking up on him.

Haha, everything is thankfully intact!  Yesterday it was unseasonably warm and it was wonderful, but today it's back to the deep freeze, of course.

You can't really go wrong with NC other than avoiding Nocturama & being aware of the fact that he's definitely mellowed out a little over the years - his earlier stuff is quite different to his more recent albums.

The Boatman's Call is a very different fish...here's a good quote from the allmusic review: "A song cycle equally inspired by Cave's failed romantic affairs and religious doubts, The Boatman's Call captures him at his most honest and despairing."

Most people agree that Nocturama is the only one to avoid in an otherwise excellent, exciting & varied catalog!

I don't have his debut From Here To Eternity, or it's follow up The FirstBorn Is Dead. Allmusic has From Here To Eternity as his essential pick along with Let Love In. His earlier stuff is definitely much rawer/punk.

Yeah I saw that, I liked The Proposition more. Jesse James was good though, even when you knew what was gonna happen obviously it still worked. When he goes to kill Jesse James, you really feel how nervous he felt.

I got The Boatman's Call and I'm not overly impressed yet, its a little slow. I'm convinced this is not the best album for me. I'm listening to the song Red Right Hand on Last.fm and i like it more than anything on The Botman's call. I want something more twisted, dark, and possibly psychedelic (The Propistion had some dark psychedelic sounds).

"People Ain't No Good" has been one of my favourite songs since the first time I heard it.  Incredible song.

I really love Live Seeds, but I'm less into the studio verions. That being said, Henry's Dream is awesome. I always get the outro to John Finn's Wife stuck in my head. In fact, it's in there right now.

I didn't like the first Gladiator but I have no doubt in my mind that that would have been an awesome movie. The Proposition was beautifully written.

might be biased since Nick Cave can do no wrong in my eyes, but my god is Idiot Prayer a gorgeous record.  Some truly excellent versions of these songs. 
He's definitely surpassed basically everyone else for me in terms of, "who I'm most interested to see what they're going to do next."
