Title: Nick Cave Appreciation Thread
Post by: ratsprayer on Oct 01, 2005, 10:02 PM
hes the master of macabre, or whatever the hell you want call him, but hes fucking great.  cave is definitely one of the best lyricists and storytellers in modern music and will go down in the books that way, at least i think.  he does generally follow the same schtick his whole career, but theres still plenty of variety and progress in his work.  im one of the most anti-religion people out there, but his bellowings about god, the bible, jesus etc. are some of his best songs.

i know ive seen lots of admiration for him around, but who else immerses their dark soul in the crazy mind of nick cave?

You know I do.

That man simply hasn't made a bad record - fact!

I think Let Love In is still may fav.

Have you read Bad Seed: The Biography of Nick Cave by Ian Johnston? Out of date now but a great read at the time.

Ever seen him live?

hmmm, i didnt care for nocturma overall, but it did have some great songs.  ive read 'and the ass saw the angel' which i say he had a thesaurus stuck up his ass while writing.  ill have to check out that book though.  ive heard its a sexual experience to see him live.  nick cave & the bad seeds are in my top 3 acts to see live, although i couldnt tell you the other 2.

i think FROM HER TO ETERNITY still holds as my favourite.  NO MORE SHALL WE PART still blows my mind, and i think ABATTOIR BLUES is one of his single best discs of material, ever.

Whilst I agree that Nocturama is possibly Nick's worst I still wouldn't call it a bad record.

I read an interview with him in Mojo earlier this year (maybe it was late last year?). Apparently he puts on a suit and goes to his office to write songs as if it were a regular 9 to 5 job.
I thought that was cool.  8)

I don't have the B-sides box set yet, any good?

Really? I'm not such a big fan of music video DVDs.
I only buy them if they have other stuff like live footage, interviews or documentaries etc.
Any extras?

Yeah, saw him live last year. What a show. What a presence that man has. He went on stage and it's electricity from the start to the end. The Bad Seeds are really big sounding, a real wall of sound.
The little gospel choir added a beautiful touch, also in old classics like Do You Love Me.
My favorite moment was when they tapped that gong to start Red Right Hand and the crowd went nuts.
Oh and they ended with The Mercy Seat, damn cool.

I think Live Seeds is my favorite album, because it has that kick-ass version of Papa Won't Leave You Henry.

The acoustic stuff on the b-sides box is really impressive. City Of Refuge, The Mercy Seat, Jack The Ripper... Brilliant versions.

That's so cool - what I'd give to see Nick & the Bad Seeds live!

I know I posted this before but did anybody ever see him in the movie Johnny Suede? Nick's character Freak Storm gives Brad Pitt's Johnny Suede some bad chicken!
That alone is funny!

I have that.  I really enjoyed watching it, considering that I had never seen a single Nick Cave video before then.  Okay, maybe one or two.. I think?

The God is In The House dvd is great, too.  It's always nice to bring a Cave concert into your living room, wouldn't you say?  He is high atop my concert-must-sees list.  The band rocks, oh my goodness, I could imagine..

Coincidently, on the ride back from Atlanta, my friend had her IPod on and one of the artists she had playing was Nick Cave.  I'm not all that familiar with him, but know that I've liked every thing I've heard (mostly on XM Radio), and whatever she was playing was perfect for the long ride home.

Got you some songs that would make a fine introductionary disc. Kind of a mix between his different styles.

stranger than kindness
the carny
city of refuge
the ship song
the mercy seat (live seeds)
papa won't leave you Henry (live seeds)
Jack the ripper (live seeds or acoustic from b-sides box)
new morning (live seeds)
red right hand
the curse of millhaven
into my arms
are you the one that I've been waiting for
oh my lord
there she goes my beautiful world
carry me
breathless
saint huck
song of joy

Just revisited this song...

Song Of Joy

Have mercy on me, sir
Allow me to impose on you
I have no place to stay
And my bones are cold right through
I will tell you a story
Of a man and his family
And I swear that it is true

Ten years ago I met a girl named Joy
She was a sweet and happy thing
Her eyes were bright blue jewels
And we were married in the spring
I had no idea what happiness and little love could bring
Or what life had in store
But all things move toward their end
All things move toward their their end
On that you can be sure

La la la la la la la la la la
La la la la la la la la la la

Then one morning I awoke to find her weeping
And for many days to follow
She grew so sad and lonely
Became Joy in name only
Within her breast there launched an unnamed sorrow
And a dark and grim force set sail
Farewell happy fields
Where joy forever dwells
* Hail horrors hail *

Was it an act of contrition or some awful premonition
As if she saw into the heart of her final blood-soaked night
Those lunatic eyes, that hungry kitchen knife
Ah, I see sir, that I have your attention!
Well, could it be?
How often I've asked that question
Well, then in quick succession
We had babies, one, two, three

We called them Hilda, Hattie and Holly
They were their mother's children
Their eyes were bright blue jewels
And they were quiet as a mouse
There was no laughter in the house
No, not from Hilda, Hattie or Holly
"No wonder", people said, "poor mother Joy's so melancholy"
Well, one night there came a visitor to our little home
I was visiting a sick friend
I was a doctor then
Joy and the girls were on their own

La la la la la la la la la la
La la la la la la la la la la

Joy had been bound with electrical tape
In her mouth a gag
She'd been stabbed repeatedly
And stuffed into a sleeping bag
In their very cots my girls were robbed of their lives
Method of murder much the same as my wife's
Method of murder much the same as my wife's
It was midnight when I arrived home
Said to the police on the telephone
Someone's taken four innocent lives

They never caught the man
He's still on the loose
It seems he has done many many more
Quotes John Milton on the walls in the victim's blood
The police are investigating at tremendous cost
In my house he wrote "his red right hand"
That, I'm told is from Paradise Lost
The wind round here gets wicked cold
But my story is nearly told
I fear the morning will bring quite a frost

And so I've left my home
I drift from land to land
I am upon your step and you are a family man
Outside the vultures wheel
The wolves howl, the serpents hiss
And to extend this small favour, friend
Would be the sum of earthly bliss
Do you reckon me a friend?
The sun to me is dark
And silent as the moon
Do you, sir, have a room?
Are you beckoning me in?

La la la la la la la la la la
La la la la la la la la la la

you should definitely get LET LOVE IN, even though it has a few songs i can't stand.  the others more than make up for it though, and that album is one of my all time favourites.  if you really dig the grinderman disc, go for some early stuff.  my personal favourite in the nick cave catalogue is FROM HER TO ETERNITY.  it's straight up raw, though.

bugger it i had i long post nearly finished, and my computer had to restart.... hm.

anyway, i love nick cave. i saw nc & the bad seeds the first week after i moved to melbourne (2002), and while the venue wasn't the greatest (festival hall, claim to fame that its the venue the beatles played in the early 60s) but it's still one of the most impressive gigs i've ever been to. i'm glad i got to see the bad seeds while blixa was still a member, we were treated to a lot of ear-shattering screaming courtesy of mr bargeld... :)

i only have a best of, and and no more shall we part. the best of is a great collection... don't normally go for them, but you can't go wrong here....

even apart from the music, he's a pretty talented man - he's written poetry, at least one novel, and if you can get your hands on it, i would HIGHLY recommend seeing his film "the proposition". one of the best depictions of late-colonial australia / bushrangers / treatment of aboriginals / english rule / the outback etc that i've EVER seen. its a pretty confronting and quite brutal film in a lot of ways, but its just amazing. the score (which nick did with warren ellis) is equally amazing. one of the things i most liked about the film was that there is no black & white to the situation, or to the behaviour of the characters - you can see the good & bad in each character, in the way they react to situations.... very complex and realistic

NEW ALBUM DETAILS!!!
http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/page/news/46831-nick-cave-and-the-bad-seeds-idigi-in-for-new-lp

"Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! is what they're calling the 14th studio LP from Australian sneer-rock vets Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. Produced jointly by the band and Nick Launay (whose previous credits include the Bad Seeds' Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus), the disc was recorded at Richmond, England's State of the Ark studios over the summer. Though there's no tracklist info just yet, the album's artwork is provided by British artists Tim Noble and Sue Webster. The disc will drop March 3 in the UK on Anti- (a U.S. release is due in the spring, though a date isn't set yet), and news of a first single and a Bad Seeds tour can be expected shortly."

There's a deluxe edition of the CD, anybody know what's special about it? I can't find any info on the website. It's a bit pricier than the standard release & don't want to splash out if it's just a special case or something...

Very much looking forward to hearing the new album, but more than that, the possibility of NC + Bad Seeds touring the US. As far as I know, they didn't make it over here to support their last album, at least not the Bay Area. Grinderman came through last year, and they played some Bad Seeds songs after running through the Grinderman catalouge (kicking myself that I missed that one).

Nick Cave is one of the most exciting and important musical artists in the world today. He's such an intriguing guy to me, I love reading interviews with him. And the Bad Seeds just keep sounding better...

From the Bad Seeds site:

Plug Awards
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds will play a special headlining set at the 2008 Plug Awards. Nick Cave is this year's Plug Impact Award Honoree. The awards take place on 6th March at Terminal 5 in New York City

From Ticketmaster:

Additional Information:
PLUG 2008 Independent Music Awards, hosted by Patton Oswalt with performances by nominees St. Vincent, Dizzee Rascal, José Gonzales and more, plus a headlining set from this year's PLUG Impact Artist Honoree Nick Cave performing with the Bad Seeds.

Thanks to our friends at the Dell Lounge, what was originally a $25 ticket is now just 10 bucks. Dell Lounge, an important supporter of the independent music community, has contributed $15 toward the cost of every fan's ticket. Very Cool.

On general sale Friday 8 February.  Some sort of presale going on at the moment.

Oh, and Jose Gonzalez is well worth catching, too.

QuoteDid you get tickets Mark?

Oh yes, I've got tickets.  In fact, I've got three spare.  It looked like the standing tickets had sold out, and I panicked and bought seated tickets.  Then I found out the standing ones weren't sold out and I bought them too.  We're such old farts these days that we can't decide whether to stand (and cling to the pretence of youth and battle to the bar for beers) or sit (and rest our weary bones whilst having easy access to the bar for beers).  :-/ ;) :-[

So, anyone on here who's in London on 7th May is welcome to buy three tickets.  Could be standing, could be seated - don't know yet which ones I'll be selling.  I'll probably get rid of them on the Cave forum (face value, naturally, and I'd rather tear them up than sell them to a tout.  In fact, I'd rather tear them up in front of a tout).

Can't wait for the new album.  Title track sounds great.

Haha, everything is thankfully intact!  Yesterday it was unseasonably warm and it was wonderful, but today it's back to the deep freeze, of course.

I'm lounging around, trying to clean up my room (not going so well) and going to do some reading hopefully.  Tomorrow is a holiday (Family Day - wtf?) so I'm pretty pumped about a long weekend.

Hmmmm - yes, mine too.  Only pics are inside front and rear cover.  Blank pages (although page numbering continues as if there were something on them), and only "writings" are the lyrics.

There is a general sense of "underwhelmedness" on a couple of the Cave boards I've visited...

Thanks Mark. So maybe that's how it's supposed to be then? Bit cheeky charging extra & calling it a 'deluxe edition' if that's the case...that or they all got printed incorrectly?

Would that be your first Nick Cave album Dark?

You can't really go wrong with NC other than avoiding Nocturama & being aware of the fact that he's definitely mellowed out a little over the years - his earlier stuff is quite different to his more recent albums.

INDEED! Loved it on the first spin. Here are some highlights:

Dig Lazarus Dig!!!- "I don't know what it is but there's definitely something goin on upstairs!" Brilliant. And quite addictive. I do feel kinda sorry for Larry though...

Today's Lesson- Very Hold Steady, very good.

Moonland- Lovin the blues touches on this one. His voice sounds kinda like Tom Waits here...

We Call Upon the Author- Hilarious romp. "Prolix! Prolix! Nothing a pair of scissors can't fix!"  ;D

Jesus on the Moon- Has the mood of late night in a Paris hotel.

More News from Nowhere- Reminds me of the National for some reason...you don't even notice it's 8 minutes long

And glad to see your spacebar working again, db.  ;)

My 2 favs are Let Love In & The Boatman's Call. Let Love In is a masterpiece & shows the many sides of Nick best IMO.
The Boatman's Call is a very different fish...here's a good quote from the allmusic review: "A song cycle equally inspired by Cave's failed romantic affairs and religious doubts, The Boatman's Call captures him at his most honest and despairing."

Most people agree that Nocturama is the only one to avoid in an otherwise excellent, exciting & varied catalog!

Let us know how you get on  :)

I'll let you know if i can find them, most stores seem to have a random (never the same ones the other store had) and small nick cave selection.
I saw The Proposition while you were taking time off from here. I enjoyed that a lot - the music, writing and everything.

OK let more give you more to choose from! Of the albums I have:

Kicking Against The Pricks - (don't actually have this yet) covers album
Tender Prey - essential! Features one of Nick's most famous & best songs The Mercy Seat (covered by Johnny cash) & New Morning (covered by The Jacket!!!) + Dee's theme tune Deanna!
The Good Son - good album but not essential IMO.
Live Seeds - excellent live album! The essential live album...
Henry's Dream - the 2nd Nick Cave album I bought after Let Love In. Excellent album & one of my favs...essential!
Let Love In - my fav Nick Cave album. Def essential.
Murder Ballads - great album, def worth having.
The Boatman's Call - an absolute classic...essential!
No More Shall We Part - another excellent album.
Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus - great (double) album, def worth having...might be a bit too much to digest for a first purchase though?
Dig!!! Lazarus Dig!!! - great album, def worth having...I'm still digesting this one...

Let Love In, Boatman's Call, Tender Prey, Henry's Dream if you can get them, anything else on the list if you can't.
I don't have his debut From Here To Eternity, or it's follow up The FirstBorn Is Dead. Allmusic has From Here To Eternity as his essential pick along with Let Love In. His earlier stuff is definitely much rawer/punk.

Pleased you liked The Proposition, excellent movie!
Have you seen Jesse James? I loved that too, probably more...bought the soundtrack too.

Yeah I saw that, I liked The Proposition more. Jesse James was good though, even when you knew what was gonna happen obviously it still worked. When he goes to kill Jesse James, you really feel how nervous he felt.

I got The Boatman's Call and I'm not overly impressed yet, its a little slow. I'm convinced this is not the best album for me. I'm listening to the song Red Right Hand on Last.fm and i like it more than anything on The Botman's call. I want something more twisted, dark, and possibly psychedelic (The Propistion had some dark psychedelic sounds).

One more thing before I head to bed . . .

LETTER TO MTV
TO ALL THOSE AT MTV,

I WOULD LIKE TO START BY THANKING YOU ALL FOR THE SUPPORT YOU HAVE GIVEN ME OVER RECENT YEARS AND I AM BOTH GRATEFUL AND FLATTERED BY THE NOMINATIONS THAT I HAVE RECEIVED FOR BEST MALE ARTIST. THE AIR PLAY GIVEN TO BOTH THE KYLIE MINOGUE AND P. J. HARVEY DUETS FROM MY LATEST ALBUM MURDER BALLADS HAS NOT GONE UNNOTICED AND HAS BEEN GREATLY APPRECIATED. SO AGAIN MY SINCERE THANKS.

HAVING SAID THAT, I FEEL THAT IT'S NECESSARY FOR ME TO REQUEST THAT MY NOMINATION FOR BEST MALE ARTIST BE WITHDRAWN AND FURTHERMORE ANY AWARDS OR NOMINATIONS FOR SUCH AWARDS THAT MAY ARISE IN LATER YEARS BE PRESENTED TO THOSE WHO FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE WITH THE COMPETITIVE NATURE OF THESE AWARD CEREMONIES. I MYSELF, DO NOT. I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN OF THE OPINION THAT MY MUSIC IS UNIQUE AND INDIVIDUAL AND EXISTS BEYOND THE REALMS INHABITED BY THOSE WHO WOULD REDUCE THINGS TO MERE MEASURING. I AM IN COMPETITION WITH NO-ONE.
MY RELATIONSHIP WITH MY MUSE IS A DELICATE ONE AT THE BEST OF TIMES AND I FEEL THAT IT IS MY DUTY TO PROTECT HER FROM INFLUENCES THAT MAY OFFEND HER FRAGILE NATURE.

SHE COMES TO ME WITH THE GIFT OF SONG AND IN RETURN I TREAT HER WITH THE RESPECT I FEEL SHE DESERVES - IN THIS CASE THIS MEANS NOT SUBJECTING HER TO THE INDIGNITIES OF JUDGEMENT AND COMPETITION. MY MUSE IS NOT A HORSE AND I AM IN NO HORSE RACE AND IF INDEED SHE WAS, STILL I WOULD NOT HARNESS HER TO THIS TUMBREL - THIS BLOODY CART OF SEVERED HEADS AND GLITTERING PRIZES. MY MUSE MAY SPOOK! MAY BOLT! MAY ABANDON ME COMPLETELY!

SO ONCE AGAIN, TO THE PEOPLE AT MTV, I APPRECIATE THE ZEAL AND ENERGY THAT WAS PUT BEHIND MY LAST RECORD, I TRULY DO AND SAY THANK YOU AND AGAIN I SAY THANK YOU BUT NO...NO THANK YOU.

YOURS SINCERELY, NICK CAVE 21 OCT 96.

Not really a spoiler because the movie isn't being made but here's how Nick's script for the Gladiator sequel went:

"In Cave's script, Maximus' character is reincarnated after a meeting with Roman gods in the afterlife. The script then has him reunite with his son, before being given the power to live forever, adapting to a number of new roles that see him fight - and survive - in World War II and the Vietnam war. In the final scene, set in the present day, the character is seen working in the Pentagon."

I didn't like the first Gladiator but I have no doubt in my mind that that would have been an awesome movie. The Proposition was beautifully written.

might be biased since Nick Cave can do no wrong in my eyes, but my god is Idiot Prayer a gorgeous record.  Some truly excellent versions of these songs.
He's definitely surpassed basically everyone else for me in terms of, "who I'm most interested to see what they're going to do next."
