I guess I'll just have to be watching setlists.  They play back to back nights in DC in later this month and while I'd like to attend both, I get the feeling that the lack of variance may convince me to go to only one. :-\  I wouldn't want to miss some rarities though.

Wrong, it's "Where'd All the Time Go"

Dr. Dog - Where'd All The Time Go? - live Music Box @ Fonda, April 27, 2010 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ad9Ec3W4Nmk#)

you know I get so forgetful when I look in your eyes...

Id have to side with Chode on this one. I cant pick a clear favorite, but it would be between Where'd All The Time Go?, Jackie Wants a Black Eye, and Mirror, Mirror....Just goes to show how great of an album it is when 5 different songs have been mentioned as favorites

This is why it got my top-spot on my top-5 list for this year. Straight through, every song is solid. Nothing skippable, nothing out of place...no turds in the caviar.

I just choose that song because I love the guitar parts in it. It's one of their more musical songs, which shows their versatility since I really have always considered them as a 50/50 split band between an emphasis on lyrics vs music.

Let me know how it is, Ruckus! I just got my tickets for their show on the 7th in Birmingham and I'm perdy stoked. The venue has a 300 person cap, so it should be hot and heavy  ;)

I've never seen 'em live before, but they do seem to have that X-factor that we spoiled MMJ fans get so much of. Do they usually play stuff from all of their albums, or just the most recent when they tour?

I'd love to hear some stuff from Fate.

They are just such a fun band live!  I've seen 'em on each tour at least once since We All Belong was released and they have typically played up their most recent albums along with previous 'hits.'  I'm guessing this time around, they'll be playing a lot of their "deluxe" re-release of Shame Shame songs.  As for Fate, I'd guess you'll typically get The Rabbit, the Bat and the Reindeer, Army of Ancients, The Breeze, etc.

Yeah it was a lot of fun. Good band, good set list for me. I've only gotten really into Fate and Shame, Shame so I saw a lot that I wanted to see.

I have to say I was more impressed by Of Head and Heart. With a name like that I figured they would be some early '00s post-hardcore terrible band. They were great though.

My first Dr. Dog show a few nights ago was a blast. I actually talked to someone the day of the show that said the Head & the Heart were terrible when they saw them open for Dog @ their show, and the people I went with werent in any hurry so we didnt get there until like 10 minutes before DD came on. Had this been a couple years ago, I wouldve been blown away by how much energy they have on stage, but word of mouth and live vids had me expecting that going in. That said, they best way I can put it is that they were 1 of the most fun bands Ive ever seen live. Not all around mindblowing like MMJ, not rock your face off like J Roddy Walston & The Business, not a dance party like Phish, just fun as hell - and that I didnt expect to the extent it was. I somewhat chalk it up to their sound/songs. The first 2/3 of the show was just bouncing back and forth between songs from Shame, Shame and Fate, and I loved every minute of it.  The encore was pretty much a song to song segue of Easy Beat, slightly condensed, but still very nice and unexpected. One of the people I went with has seen them 10+ times, going back to 2004 when they opened for MWard and MMJ, and said it was hands down the best show from them. Biggest complaint was the venue bc if you have a drink in hand, you cant get within 25ft of the stage. The 3 songs I really wanted were RBReindeer (which I figured theyd play), Mirror Mirror, and Jackie - so Im glad I got all 3 of those.

1.I Only Wear Blue
2.Stranger
3.Mirror, Mirror
4.The Ark
5.The Breeze
6.Hang On
7.The Old Days
8.Take Me Into Town
9.Shadow People
10.Someday
11.Nobody Knows Who You Are
12.The Beach
13.The Rabbit, The Bat & The Reindeer
14.Where'd All The Time Go?
15.Worst Trip
16.Unbearable Why
17.The Way The Lazy Do
18.Heart It Races

Encore:
19.Old News
20.Today
21.The World May Never Know
22.Fool's Life
23.Oh No
24.Wake Up
25.Jackie Wants A Black Eye.

Im guessing it was sold out, I meant to ask when I was at willcall but forgot. It didnt seem unpleasantly packed, though we were stuck in the back. I will say that the sound there has been great the last few shows Ive seen there, whereas just a couple years ago the sound was terrible. Dont know if they got better people working the boards or what.

When I saw them in Birmingham a couple weeks ago, they asked for song requests during the encore and a girl up front requested "Today." Scott didn't remember the words so he made her lip sing it to him while the band played on  ;D

I wonder if that kick started the Today trend in recent setlists...I wasn't familiar with the Easy Beat album until then, but that song has become one of my favorites as of late too!

Well, my friend went to the Smalls site and it was posted as sold out.... and I didn't really feel up to the semi-far drive to go test the posting's truth.... but that's cool it wasn't uncomfortably packed. I saw Old Crow Medicine Show there years ago that was sold out as all hell, and I was elbow-to-elbow anywhere I seemed to go.... AND it was still smoking... that's actually the real issue I had, I think. Sold out would've been fine if it wasn't such a cigarette hotbox back then! Does suck to get stuck back at the bars... but I've also had too many people spill their drinks on me to complain a whole lot  :embarassed:  (At the Old Crow show, they brought MINI bars out to both sides of the stage, cause it was damn near impossible to get back to the bars if you weren't already back there.... I've never seen them do that since! But it was a nice luxury  :) )

Oh and this   |

More stage banter from Birmingham that y'all might find amusing. Somebody just put up a great video of Scott ranting about the Superbowl Halftime fizzle. He pretends to be Slash at the beginning  ;D

Oh and this song is yummy too...love how they pair the guitars. Almost reminiscent of how Jim and Carl interact  :)

Nice...this is probably my favorite part as it likely means another EP or handful of songs released after the album.  I swear they said they had like 20+ songs for Shame Shame too, but only released 4 after the fact, right? I just hope were not missing out on anything.

QuoteHow many songs did you start with?

We had a ton of stuff going in. We recorded about 25 songs and will mix about 21. We're in a conundrum right now trying to figure out which songs to keep. I don't know what to do.

Haha very similar situations here too... well established bands doing it themselves in their hometown. After readying that little description I'm definitely looking forward to Tuesday even more.

Caught Dr. Dog a few weeks ago at the Firebird in St Louis. They were fucking phenomenal, despite waiting for them to come on next to a guy that tried to get a Dr. Dog chant goin, literally no less than 15x.

Really great band live. Nice setlist to me. It was Scotty's bday so they played a few audience choices and didn't really miss a beat despite concerns over playing an unrehearsed tune. Put the whole band to good use and the harmony vox were better than you could ever hope in such a small loud venue

A Quiet life was very good and should've been the main support. Lotta people around here would probably dig them.

Wax Fang was awful. The Irish punk crap isn't for me. I seriously wondered if they were still on the same tune after a few songs that sounded almost identical. They had one tune that was tolerable, but it was so drastically different from the rest of their tunes it was just confusing.

Man...I still don't have a copy of We All Belong.  It was the only vinyl I didn't have and I dropped the ball when this was announced.  If anyone knows of a place to get one of the reissues for cheap, please let me know.

Have a great time tomorrow flyjones

Irish punk crap? Saying Wax Fang is like Dropkick Murpheys is like saying Yani is like Metallica. Wax Fang is in no way, shape, or form irish anything, and have a tune or 2 that you could call pop punk at most. I literally have no idea how anyone could say Wax Fang is "Irish punk crap".

Sorry my description didn't work. About 2/3 of their set was very punky and it all had the same swing-y punk feel. It seemed like maybe they were goin for a different thing with the loops, but it never really got to the point where I thought it was good in the slightest. Like I said there was one tune that was way different from the rest of the stuff they played and it was solid at best, but I was already not into them at that point. And sandwiched between 2 bands of really solid to great musicianship in Quiet Life and Dr. Dog they were pretty underwelming.

If you don't like em, you don't like em. Different strokes, ya know. Thats fine. I just thought you meant that they sound like Flogging Molly or something, which is way off. I for one am a fan, but thats just like, my opinion, man.

WOW

That was the most fun I think I've ever had at a non-MMJ show. Yeah it was that good.

Similar set to the one you posted, with maybe 1 or 2 new tracks mixed in. They opened with Fuck It and closed with Jackie Wants a Black Eye. 120 people in the room TOPS. My ears are still ringing.

Got one of those 7" singles too.  8)

Personally, I think Shame, Shame was right up there with the best of the dog, so I'm excited to hear this.

And I hear ya ruckus. 2011 turned out to be a musical let down for me all-in-all. Not saying there weren't some great albums, but several of my top 10 favorites released mediocre records.

Digging it big time but I do think the first half of the album is stronger than the second. The first 4 to open the album are outstanding and I think Slick's presence can be heard. Not that anything previous was sloppy or anything, but Slick is tight. I also think Toby Leaman's songs are stronger overall on this album. I tend to prefer McMicken tunes as a general rule when it comes to Dr. Dog but I dont find there to be so much of a gap on this one. But again, Im just talking my preferences.

I tend to agree with your assessment of Toby's but maybe because I'm just a huge Toby fan in general (he's a severely underrated bassist with great tone and groove).  That "fat" sound on Old Black Hole is a classic example of what I'm referring to.

In the immortal words of dragonboy at Mcgees in NYC, "I don't know how you listen to that Dr. Dog.  I think it's crap.  It sounds like carnival music."   ;D  I get it.  There is some legitimacy to that if you are listening to only McMicken's songs.  It is just that perception that makes me appreciate Toby even more because if his songs didn't have that soulful punch, a Dr. Dog album would sound like ten consecutive carnival tracks.

But I'm getting sidetracked.  I appreciate that they didn't really stray out of their comfort zone but definitely feels as if there is a little more funk in some of the beats.  There are a few songs (I don't have the song list in front of me) that come across as dead ringers for past Dog songs and that's not a bad thing.  I need to listen more to see if it holds up but overall, I couldn't be happier.  These songs will all translate incredibly live I imagine and look forward to the 2 March shows.

Carnival music?  ;D Now that you say it, I can certaintly understand that conclusion. "My Old Ways" definitely comes to mind with that little piano melody.

I've probably listened to this album 10 or 12 times already. Really looking forward to hearing these songs live. My only complaint thus far is that "Control Yourself" was left off the album.

Dude lol! When we were at your place before J. Roddy I said Toby might be my favorite bassist in current music and you looked at me like I took a dump on your floor.  Then you went on a Geddy Lee rant which led us to the conclusion that you're the 3rd, always off screen, friend in I Love You Man. Ciggy sealed it. No idea how I remember all that...

I agree about the balance though, Toby's tunes add some depth to that glossy, poppy sound that in some ways has become a trademark. Like on Fate, surrounding Rabbit, Bat, &Reindeer with Army of Ancients and The Ark. In any case the album is kickass and those 2 shows in March should be a blast.

Ok, so after 3 or 4 listens, I don't find this to be nearly as catchy as the last one...nothing stands out yet. HOWEVER it is strange in that it also like sucks me in or something and its over before I know it. I just don't find myself being grabbed by anything in particular.

Then again, I think their last album might be one of my favorites in recent memory and Where'd All The Time Go is by far my favorite Dog song. The bar was set super high.

EDIT: after driving to work listening to this this AM, I realized my problem: this is an April album and needs to be enjoyed in open air

I can usually judge where an album will sit with me and I don't think this one will pass Fate or Shame Shame, but it'll be above the others unless they grow on me the way Shame Shame has in the last several months.

Well, I think I should clarify.  Technically speaking, Toby is very boring.  However, in much of the modern world of rock, the bassist exists solely for the the bottom sound, oftentimes being hardly audible in the mix.  That's where I love his role.  He's got a great tone that carries punch when he plays high on the neck and really drives their dancy groove.  But yeah, I would think you took a dump on my floor if you were arguing his technical merits.

I don't think any bass player that can channel Paul McCartney the way Toby does should ever be said to be boring in any context. There's obviously many more technical bassists than them, but the notes that those technical players play that really pop are often the same ones that McCartney would hit at just the perfect time.

I feel ya man.  What is it the Americans call it?  Two sides of the same coin?  Truth be told, I never got the Beatles (shocking) so I lack  the same admiration for McCartney that you have though I understand the Dog being compared to them as a whole.  I find Toby groovy and funky, just not exciting.

For anyone in the Philly area, Repo Records at 6th and South has it on the shelves. I got a gray one with some blue and purple around the edges, looks pretty nice. The look is pretty similar to the Control Yourself 7".  Noticed a couple differences from the leak, most noticeable in Vampire.

There is a deluxe edition like Shame, Shame with 3 additional songs available:

"Exit For Sale"
"Control Yourself"
"What A Fool"

Might be iTunes only FWIW

It's on Google Music and you can buy the 3 bonus songs individually

Do any of you have either of the first two albums on vinyl? Contemplating picking them up if they sound as good as I think they will, but the going rate seems to be pretty high these days, so wanted to make sure they were quality pressings before taking the plunge.

by first 2 albums do you mean psychedelic swamp and toothbrush or toothbrush and easy beat?

Glad you've discovered the Dog man.  Probably my favorite live band going right now.  They seem to get better and better and their shows never disappoint.

If you are referring to Easy Beat and We All Belong, I do have both and I think they sound excellent.   Easy Beat was particularly lo-fi and I think it sounds wonderful on vinyl.  I do not own any of their pre-Easy Beat material.  I don't have Toothbrush and I have no idea if that was ever pressed.  I know they had a recent repressing of some of their earlier albums and I wouldn't be surprised if they chose to do so again with their burgeoning popularity.

Thanks for the replies! I was indeed talking about Easy Beat and We All Belong, though now I'm definitely going to have to track down those earlier releases.

I am in full-fledged Dog-mode and can't get enough of these guys. Waiting until July to see them at Forecastle just doesn't seem fair. Call me crazy but I'm seriously contemplating picking up tickets to one of these shows at the Electric Factory. And I live in Canada.

O, maybe it was just bad luck the time I went, but I did not have a good time seeing them at the electric factory. They cranked it up to 11 at that show... couldn't distinguish the instruments from each other... too many people there... couldn't walk around with a beer in my hand... just didn't have a good time there.

Interesting... this has me reconsidering my pipe dream. I suppose I could hit up the Albany show instead. I'd save myself about four hours each way driving.

This would be a lot easier if they just tossed on a couple more northern tour dates. But I expect those will come with time.

This is my fear.  I'm planning on seeing them this Wednesday in Mobile at a pretty small place.  I know it's going to be super crowded (which I hate) plus I won't be home until probably 1:30 am on weeknight.  I rarely stay up past 10 on weeknights so I'm trying to convince myself to just suck it up and deal.

There are worse ways to spend a Wednesday night than in a small, packed club seeing a band that enjoys and kicks ass playing small, packed clubs. They'll put you out of weekday mode pretty quick.

Or just go.  I know jrud, gtf and I will be there.  There may never be a relatively small club hometown show again.

I think you might enjoy yourself more at a smaller venue, even if it is crowded. My main beef with the elec factory show was that that venue is larger than most they play. I think they tried to fill the whole place with their sound, but their style and sound doesn't lend itself well to larger venues, IMHO. It just sounded waaay too loud and muddy and gross. It made me sad.

However, I have seen them 2 other times at smaller venues and had a blast both times. Their sound was the perfect volume (still loud enough to be awesome but not all muddied up) and the crowds were fun and intimate. Funny you should mention the Albany show, that's the one I'm going to. I saw them in Troy, NY at the now defunct Revolution Hall a couple of years ago and it was one of my fav shows ever. There had to be less than 200 people there, and dr dog put on a great show.

gaah, my bad.  For some reason I thought the Electric Factory was a little smaller.  I don't remember it holding over 2500.  So yeah, that's not a small club at all.

I live a block from Pat's & Geno's, but their steaks are shit. The best is Cosmi's (8th & Dickinson).

Fantastic call on Paesanos. I'm right down the street from their 9th street spot. Try the sandwich with brisket... can't remember the name.

No Big Girl, which was one of the two I wanted to see really badly from the new record (though I love the whole thing) The other one I wanted to see was Heavy Light, and not only did they play it, but they extended a middle jam session. really cool! great show! it was packed, though...

If I were a 16 yr old girl making a party mix cd, I would consider at least 3 songs from this record. Heavy Light, Big Girl, how long must I wait?  All three make me move

Album of the year so far. Didn't dig the last one as much as many peeps here did. I wish I would've caught them live last week, I didn't know I'd dig Be the Void as much as I would when tickets were available.

Good call. I think it's only a matter of time before "How Long Must I Wait" gets sampled and turns into a huge rap hit. That beat is flat-out nasty.

Man, am I glad some of you threatened and or called me names for considering not going to this show.  So cool to see a band this good play in such a small intimate setting.  I have no idea how they aren't bigger than they are.  This show was a fun dance party from start to finish.  Groovy, funky the sound was tight, I had a permagrin pretty much all night.  Plus got super close to stage with ease.  Even could go grab beers and get back to my spot without any problems.  Their stage setup is one of the cooler stages I've seen...

The first time I saw Dr. Dog they played in a real tiny place, last week they sold out at Mr. Smalls in Pittsburgh witch has a 650 person capacity (witch I did not attend).

I've got their newest vinyl on the way and see they're playin' the Frendly Gathering  (http://frendlygathering.com/) festival, about an hour away in Vermont, June 14-16.  Any other recommendations for the noob?

I speak as a try-hard die-hard (who got into the band about nine days ago and has since consumed EVERYTHING), but Easy Beat is an effin' masterpiece.

Also, just heard back from the band's manager, and they will indeed be adding more dates, including one in Toronto! So I can cancel my all-night drive to Albany for now, and await some awesome shows later in the summer!

This place the other night has a 400 person capacity and did not sell out.  Close, I'd say 350. I don't like to "fight" for a spot and will usually end up where I can watch a show comfortably.  You can see I'm pretty close in that pic and had no issues at all.  Can't stop thinking about it.  Great, great concert.

Yac, I'd soak the new album in before jumping to anything else.  It is a pretty fantastic album.  I would go with Fate next.  But, that's me.  I'm sure someone else will say I'm wrong.

Since they have a good rep as a live band, seems like the thing to do would be come to House of Blues in Boston 3/22 as I am flying solo that night.

As far as albums, I agree that the new album, plus the two above should give you lots to chew on.   Not that I'm any great expert, but I've been listening for 6 months now, and a review of current setlists showed me that captured 95% of what I need to know.

I go back and forth about whether I like Fate or Shame Shame better.

I couldn't get a date (or even date range) out of their manager, unfortunately. I'm praaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaying the Toronto date is before the Forecastle set, because I too would hate for my Dog cherry to be popped in a festival atmosphere. They are playing Vermont in June, so maybe they'll build a Toronto-Montreal-Ottawa set of shows somewhere in there? It makes geographical sense, so that's what I'm hoping for.

O, maybe it was just bad luck the time I went, but I did not have a good time seeing them at the electric factory. They cranked it up to 11 at that show... couldn't distinguish the instruments from each other... too many people there... couldn't walk around with a beer in my hand... just didn't have a good time there.

I wish I could fly down there and punch you in the ball sac

Just got my ticket.  That'll save you a trip down here to punch me in the area that my ball sac used to be..   ;D

Very much excited for tonight's show.  It'll be the first time seeing them since the first round of the Shame, Shame tour when Deer Tick opened for them.  That's quite a drought.  The key for any Saturday Paddy's day show is to puke green beer on someone before someone does on you.  It's just sooo tough to turn my Lagunitas Cappucino Stout green.

This is what I pulled from setlist.  It looks right as a whole.  Great show!  I was leery of this show in that it was at the Ram's Head Live in the Power Plant Live, the single worst entertainment area conceivable.  It's where all the non locals and asshats hang out filled with chain clubs and restaurants.  When you add to that St. Paddy's Day, it was a recipe for disaster.  Instead, we avoided drama completely other than YGTF knocking a whole double scotch and ginger out of my hand. ;D ;D  He replaced it immediately   Thankful that it wasn't sold out and the sound was as good as I've ever heard at Ram's Head.

Great time with jrud, his wife and YGTF and others.  The new songs all sounded great and My Friend was the highlight that I remember AND the only video I've found so far with our dancing heads as a bonus.

Had fun at the Dr Dog show last night. Setlist was pretty standard except for the 1st song of the encore. Scott told a story of how the girl from the opening band (Birdie Bush) was from the same street as him or something. Then he said they were gonna try an old one, so naturally I got all excited because I thought maybe something off of Easy Beat.. but no, it was something else. I couldn't figure out what the hell song it was. I'll have to look at some more lyrics to figure it out. It was a Scott song... somewhere in the middle I think he said 'i do' a couple of times. Something else about meeting a girl at a bus stop maybe... memory is fuzzy.

Didn't get From or The Way The Lazy Do... but that's ok.

Also, I thought the shitty Clifton Park crowd (I can call them shitty cuz I'm from there) was pretty decent. Good energy, decent size, all good things... until some asswagons actually started a fucking fight right in the middle of the pit... at a dr dog show. C'mon man. Some girl got her glasses really smashed up and numerous flipflop wearers got their toes smushed. I can't remember what song they were playing when the fight broke out, but the band definitely noticed it, it split the crowd like moses did the sea. The next two songs after the fight were Shame, Shame and Jackie Wants a Black Eye ;D

Zach is on a roll!  Although one of my best friends, we've not shared a lot of music together.   But my last 5 shows in a row have been with him and as he said, Delta Spirit on Tuesday!

I really enjoyed Dr Dog.   It was a mellow night for me- didn't leave the house til late and missed most of both openers.    I was surprised at how crowded it was and how into it the fans are.   Always fun to see a band you aren't as into, just to people watch.

I especially liked the bass / singer guy - was totally feeling his groove and I thought he added a ton to the show.   My favorite songs from listening to the albums were also the ones I thought they killed live - Stranger, Lonesome, Shadow People, The Beach, The Ark...

I very much enjoyed it, glad I went, listened to the new album again this am (always a good sign).   If I'd been less sober and down in the front with the crazies, I would have had a real blast.    Definitely on my list for Forecastle.

I'm not super familiar with all of them, but that's Toby, right, Ewind?  Not ciggy?
Anyway, he's (toby) awesome.  He sings so hard and intense.  I really hope his vocal cords hold up for him.  The way he strains and growls seems like he's shredding them.
I was less sober and up close, and I was a dancing fool.  Not really something I usually do.  Especially seeing a band for the first time.

I also love Toby's far off stare while he's singing.  It's almost like he's summoning his voice from somewhere...

Anyway, glad you had a good time.

The show on Friday at Terminal 5 was fucking awesome as well.  I've seen them 4 times now and each show has gotten better.  They really are up there in terms of the better live bands touring these days.  My only complaint is that they are not playing How Long Must I Wait, whats up with that?  That guitar riff would send the place into a frenzy

Great Saturday show at the Electric Factory.  I have know idea why I was convinced that they played Nobody Knows Who You Are.  1st hometown show was a lot of fun!  It's tough keeping that jrud out of trouble ;)

Wait, so this is where you were when I was sending you drunk annoying texts?  Dude, why didn't you tell me to leave you alone?  ;D

I couldn't agree more Murph.  I do miss the intimate shows of 2005 but they do continue to get better and better and hone their live sound.  As both Toby and Scott continue to harp on, it seems the addition of Slick has really taken them to the next level and really challenged Toby's playing as well.

I havent listened to Be The Void in probably over a month, and it does need more listens, but Im surprised to see how many people think its the Dogs best album. Dont think its near as good as Fate and Shame, Shame, but in its own right is very good. Then again, Fate and SS were top 3 albums for me the years they were released, so tough to out-do that.

I think McMicken sort of phoned it in this album. Old Black Hole is great, and I really like How Long Must I Wait, but while catchy I dont think Do The Trick and Over Here, Over There are anything special and are below his songwriting/lyrical ability. Heavy Light has to be the most experimental Dog song to date and Im still not sure how I feel about it.

Alongside that, my favorite 5 songs off Shame, Shame are likely all McMicken tracks (Mirror Mirror, Where'd All The Time Go?, I Only Wear Blue, Jackie Wants a Black Eye, Shadow People). Fate was more of a split, so the biggest surprise for me on BTV is that my 5 favorite songs are possibly Toby tunes (Vampire, Warrior Man, Lonesome, These Days, Get Away) although hard to leave Black Hole out of there. I think Toby steals this album and really like all his songs, and if I had to pick the thing I like best about Dr. Dog its probably always been McMicken's lyrics.

Seems like it was years ago when I went on my first Dr. Dog binge, but scanning through this thread reveals it was only last March. Either way, the day is finally coming. In less than three weeks, I'll be attending my first REAL Dr. Dog show! Saw them at Forecastle, but a festival set was no way to inaugurate myself to the Dog -- a 500-person club is much more like it, and I CANNOT WAIT!

I'm hoping they deviate a bit from their Be The Void-heavy sets of last year and add in some older gems. I gotta somehow get "Say Something" in their ear...

Saw Dr Dog a couple weekends ago and they didn't play anything new. It was a festival set though, so that wasn't much of a surprise. In fact, the set was so 'mainstream' that when they played I Only Wear Blue, I freaked out as if it was a deep cut from Easy Beat or something. The last 3 times I've seen them the setlists have sucked.

I don't know much about the song (apparently it's an oldie), but here you go, Rob:

Dr. Dog - Fat Dog - Azkena Rock Festival 2009 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qmg368Tw5Ak#ws)

I have a version from a 2010 Boston show so that's where I've heard it.  This is an interesting line, though:

I realize "What A Fool" was released earlier, but man, that song really does nothing for me. Am I the only one that thinks it kinda ruins the flow of this EP? The four Scott songs are all up there with the Dog's best, but "What A Fool" just feels like a retread of ground that Toby has covered many, many times in the past.

I can't really say that I dislike it, but it is probably my least favorite song on the EP and stands out as sort of a speed bump right smack in the middle.  I hadn't listen to it much to begin with when it came with the deluxe iTunes download.  There are many Toby songs I love, but it seems as though I tend to lean toward Scott's work more often.  Maybe its Scott's generally more upbeat/playful vibe?  At least that's what I get.

Woooo! Only two more sleeps before I finally see my first Dr. Dog non-festival set. Looks like the setlists have been steadily improving...

Oct. 9, Boulder:

QuoteHow Long Must I Wait
Stranger
That Old Black Hole
The Ark
The Way the Lazy Do
Vampire
Shadow People
Hang On
Do the Trick
The Beach
Heavy Light
Worst Trip
From
Lonesome
The Rabbit, The Bat, and The Reindeer
Heart It Races
(Architecture in Helsinki cover)
Jackie Wants a Black Eye
Encore:
These Days
I Only Wear Blue
Die Die Die
My Friend (with full Fate outro)

Oct. 5, LA:
Quote
The Rabbit, The Bat, and The Reindeer
        Stranger
        Do the Trick
        The Ark
        I Only Wear Blue
        These Days
        Hang On
        Heavy Light
        The Beach
        That Old Black Hole
        Shame, Shame
        From
        Vampire
        Shadow People
        Heart It Races
        (Architecture in Helsinki cover)
        The Way the Lazy Do
        Lonesome
        Encore:
        California

        Oh No

I'd KILL to hear "Oh No!" Anything off Easy Beat will take me to a happy place. Also VERY glad they seem to be inching "How Long Must I Wait" into regular rotation.

I have now seen a REAL Dr. Dog show, and my life will never be the same.

Their Forecastle set was a complete joke compared to the absolute thrashing they laid upon a few hundred people in Toronto last night. Over the last ten years, I've seen hundreds of shows, and (MMJ excepted) I don't think I've ever seen a band display such high amounts of energy on stage. It's like the Dog's manifesto is "we're gonna have fun whether you like it or not!" What an attitude!

The place was rockin' right from the beginning. Dudes headbanging, fist pumping, crowd surfing, it was just wild. At one point Toby motioned for a crowdsurfer to be surfed toward the stage. Toby grabbed the guy, pulled him on stage and sung a verse with him before violently (and hilariously) pushing him to get back in the crowd. A drunken stage dive followed and the dude was soon eating floor.

There was nary a lull in the show. Straight rock, rolled thru with serious force. As a band, the Dog is so incredibly underrated. I tend to enjoy Scott's material more, but no one can deny Toby's skills as a frontman. So much passion. All while pounding out those melodic, flowing basslines that no one seems to be playing anymore. Toby taking the lead vocals also opens up Scott and Frank to weave some awesome guitar parts. Man, neither Scott nor Frank gets the love they deserve as axe-men. I got lost in their jams several times throughout the show -- a sign of a SWEET show! I said this after the Forecastle set, but I find it hard not to watch Slick. The guy is such an effin' pro. He's flawless up there. Have no hesitation putting him in my top-five most captivating drummers I've ever seen live.

They played the Opera House last night, which is a venue I LOVE because the soundboard is elevated from the floor, so you can chill right beside the soundboard for awesome sound and a completely unobstructed view. And I don't think I'll ever rock anywhere else for future Dog shows -- the soundboard is the place to be. All those glorious harmonies, crystal clear. I have NEVER heard such wonderful, pitch-perfect, spot-on harmonies. Frank, Toby and Scott really are on another planet vocally. What a sound!

But all those skilled musicians and vocalists would be wasted without amazing songs -- which the Dog have in spades. The setlist was great and I was glad to see they busted out a couple favorites that for some reason aren't in every set -- "From", "Oh No" and "Mirror, Mirror" in particular.

MAN, I love this band. I'll shut up now.

I went to the show expecting a good time and came home with an ear-to-ear grin. These guys aren't just fun -- they are a very, very skilled band. They are now on my "must go to a couple dates per tour" list.

robb, that looks like a damn sweet set on Friday. And you got to meet Scott, no less?! That's just awesome. Is he as down to earth as I think he'd be?

You said it best, Dr. Dog has joined MMJ and Deer Tick as bands that I HAVE to go see every time they swing through town.

And yeah, Scott was great.  Really laid back dude, we talked for a good 15 minutes or so.  I mentioned I was really bummed about Rock the Casbah being cut at Forecastle and he was like "How'd you hear about that?".  Said that I heard it talked about on the boat, and he seemed really envious of the experience--you could really tell that the guy has a ton of admiration for Jim/MMJ as a whole.

I thought it was a well established fact that many of us are, in fact, asshole! And I guess y'all settled the internal debate inside my head. I do always enjoy them when I see them. The only hesitation has been that I'll have to go alone and on a school night.

Going on a school night does indeed hinder one's let-loose-ability. However, I think a lot of us on here would agree that going alone is where it's at! It sure beats not going at all. Call me a selfish asshole, but I love being able to roam around as I please and just being able to do whatever the fuck I want without worrying about others.

There are advantages to going alone. I will agree on that. There's nothing I hate more than taking someone who isn't really into a band to a show and having to listen to them complain. Although I don't see how that's possible at a Dr. Dog show.

This song is hard to not like immediately.  I dig the old soul feel of it. Im at the point with Dr. Dog though where I dont give a shit which direction they go in, I'm just very excited to hear some new music from them.  Easily one of my favorite live bands and on top of that, they dont have a bad album to date.  Cant wait...

Yeah, I cant think of another band that has more than a couple albums at this point that whenever their next album comes out, Im 100% sure its going to be very good or better with no chance I dont like it.

It will be interesting to see if the rest of the album has a similar stripped down, soul vibe or its really just the single or a few songs that sound like this.

Liking the new album. I dont think itll end up moving ahead of Fate, Shame Shame, or Be The Void, but Dr. Dog has still yet to disappoint me. Toby's songs overall seem like more of my favorites, same as Be The Void, which Im a little surprised about as I had for the most part preferred McMicken's songs before these last 2 albums.

That said, McMicken's song - Humble Passenger - that is on the deluxe edition, might be the best song of the album had it been on the actual, regular album.

Fate has some high points but it's like their Evil Urges for me.  Might be my least favorite album top to bottom now though I used to love it much more.

I like B-Room but it's definitely not as catchy, fun as Be the Void.  You can tell they have matured big time musically.  I'd love to hear some producer sample any Slick/Toby jams.  Slick is always boom bappin!  Whereas Scott's songs are rather underwhelming with no super uppity tunes like we're used to, Toby has diversified big time.  I love Cuckoo and Rock n Roll!

my bad scotty-2-hotty...i honestly was going on my first listen, i have since listened a few more times and still maintain my opinion...one thing to note though...i meant to put we all belong as my favorite album, not easy beat, like easy beat but we all belong, to me, is the best dog album...to me b-room just flowed very well and slowly builds over the entire course of the album....i did the deluxe vinyl pre-order so I don't have my vinyl yet but the mp3's sound really good...Too Weak to Ramble is one of the best songs I have heard in a really long time but i understand isn't really a "dog sounding" song...and i definitely think that having the extra three tracks on the end of the album made it much better....15 is always better than 12 right? that said I am going to see them tomorrow night....the best part...NO LUMINEERS BITCHES!!!!!!!!!! you have no idea how happy i am about this show...especially since I love the new album like I have...

I like B Room, there isn't a bad song on the album but there aren't any amazing ones either.  I kinda feel it was more of a lateral step than a step forward.  Much of that is probably due to my enormous expectations anytime they release new music. That being said, they are still one of my favorite live bands and I can't wait to hear the new songs live.

I kind of agree with that sentiment.  I think I was talking to flyguy about it and he had mentioned how he thinks he likes it more than he should because he wants to like it and I sort of feel the same way.  I think the Toby tracks are outstanding as well Humble Passenger.  So much of the attraction of Dr. Dog is the sunshiny pop aspect and that is sorely lacking in this one.  Overall it's definitely not a bad album and they pushed their sound in new directions but It's no Easy Beat, Shame Shame, or Be the Void.

Not really sure why B-Room has struck such a cord with me, I never had to really force myself to like it...some of the songs aren't as strong, I will say that but I think the ones they are playing in the live shows fit in perfectly with what the Dog is all about...for some reason though I just really dig it...I never was big into shame shame for some reason but loved be the void and the wild race ep..I think We All Belong will always be my favorite followed by Easy Beat then Fate...I put B-Room and be the void right below Fate...honestly though it's comparing apples and oranges to me...they will always be one of my favorite bands...Eric did you get into headliners this past Sunday? Sure hope so

This new album is SICK!

That is all.

(Oh wait, also SO pumped to see them on Friday.)

Two full listens since I last posted. Yep, this album kills. Normally I'm more of a Scott guy, but Toby really stepped up his game on this album, both in terms of songwriting and also in his killer bass lines. And that's saying a lot since he's always been a low-end wizard.

I love all the space on this album. Shades of Easy Beat on tracks like "Minding The Usher", which I can't get enough of at the moment.

Also, fuck Pitchfork for giving these guys such a hard time. What an unreal band. Top-notch songwriting, PERFECT harmonies and killer musicianship all around. And with B-Room, another great album added to an already-impressive discography.

Can we get some Scosby reasoning/details on this dude?
Fate has some high points but it's like their Evil Urges for me.  Might be my least favorite album top to bottom now though I used to love it much more.

I like B-Room but it's definitely not as catchy, fun as Be the Void.  You can tell they have matured big time musically.  I'd love to hear some producer sample any Slick/Toby jams.  Slick is always boom bappin!  Whereas Scott's songs are rather underwhelming with no super uppity tunes like we're used to, Toby has diversified big time.  I love Cuckoo and Rock n Roll!

I still like Fate a lot, but I definitely agree Toby has diversified a ton and right now Id say Im enjoying his songs more based on the last couple albums.

my bad scotty-2-hotty...i honestly was going on my first listen, i have since listened a few more times and still maintain my opinion...one thing to note though...i meant to put we all belong as my favorite album, not easy beat, like easy beat but we all belong, to me, is the best dog album...to me b-room just flowed very well and slowly builds over the entire course of the album....i did the deluxe vinyl pre-order so I don't have my vinyl yet but the mp3's sound really good...Too Weak to Ramble is one of the best songs I have heard in a really long time but i understand isn't really a "dog sounding" song...and i definitely think that having the extra three tracks on the end of the album made it much better....15 is always better than 12 right? that said I am going to see them tomorrow night....the best part...NO LUMINEERS BITCHES!!!!!!!!!! you have no idea how happy i am about this show...especially since I love the new album like I have...

It definitely flows well, as all their albums do, so far Id just say less songs grab me on B-Room. As I believe I said earlier, track 15 Humble Passenger is probably the best song on the album, yet is only on the deluxe.

Admittedly, I need to listen to We All Belong and Easy Beat more as I got into them after Fate, but I think Murph in this thread said it best, B-Room is a lateral step for Dr Dog

I thought the same, but I think Toby has owned the last couple albums. I feel like between Be The Void and B-Room, Toby hasnt missed, yet the only Scott songs that standout are The Truth and Long Way Down.

I listened to B-Room three times today and I enjoyed it just fine.  Toby's tracks continue to impress and Too Weak to Ramble is a GEM!  I think Scott's songs were a bit more enjoyable today.  It's definitely grown on me but still doesn't have that great top to bottom pull that some of their other work has had.  Regardless I say BRAVO Dr. Dog.  Yet to put out anything remotely resembling a stinker.

The Dog killed it in Toronto last night. New songs sounded great, and the band is tighter than ever, with their harmonies and guitar interplay ever so shimmering. Lotta instrument switching going on! At one point Slick was on guitar, Scott was on keys, it was madness!

Did a lot of crowd watching during this show, simply because the atmosphere was so joyous. Fans were smiling, dancing, jumping, fist pumping, crowd surfing, stage diving -- it's the true mark of an amazing act when their energy brings out even more energy from the crowd. The band was positively beaming all night -- even when kids kept climbing on stage, they just laughed it off. It had the energy of an underground punk show, and I loved it.

They played the Opera House -- which holds about 700 -- and I think it's time for the Dog to graduate to a bigger venue. Just like when they played the same venue last year, it was BEYOND packed, from front to back. Maybe the Dog likes playing undersized venues because it is awesome for energy, but MAN, there was NO room to boogie. Though I sure did anyway. Sorry to anyone I may have inadvertently elbowed or stepped on.

Sounds just like the show in Atlanta...lots of instrument switching and The Masquerade has like 3 different musical venues...Toby heard this guy from another band doing an awesome guitar solo before they went on so he went and got him and got him to sit in on a song(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/11/10/ebe5a9a8.jpg) it was great!!!! Crowd was really into it just like you mentioned and you could tell the band was very appreciative

That's awesome that they asked that guitarist to sit in! Gotta love that kinda spontaneity at a show. Also love that they seem to be shaking up setlists quite a bit this tour. They played "Say Something" in Louisville, and it's a good thing I wasn't there because I would have lost my shit. My #1 Dr. Dog bucket list tune.

After numerous listens, Love and Minding the Usher are probably my two favorite songs on the album.  I agree that Toby overall has the better tracks this time around, but Love is easily my favorite.

As far as Be the Void goes, I think Scott has the more enjoyable songs.  How Long Must I Wait, Do the Trick, Old Black Hole, and Over Here are some of my favorite Dr. Dog tracks.

I am really enjoying the new album more than I thought I would after hearing the two singles.

No need to apologize man.  Enjoy the show!  I've been seeing the Dog since the days of Fletchers in Fells Point from 2004 and while I too was torn between seeing both shows, the price, the venue, Arbouretum (even for a 30 minute set), and my first time seeing Wooden Shjips made the decision much easier in hindsight.  If this is your first time seeing the Dog, you are in for a treat.  Their last Rams Head show was excellent.

Lots of good shows in the Beltway Saturday night. Ha Ha Tonka is playing at the Rock & Roll Hotel also. I'm going with the Ottobar show since I've seen Dr. Dog and have never seen Arbouretum or Wooden Shjips. The fact that I won a free ticket also helps.

So how was the Ottobar show?

I almost didn't make Dr. Dog due to my daughter trying to usher in the next gen a bit earlier than expected down the road at St. Agnes that night.  Rather than spending time in the uncomfortable formal waiting room I strategically positioned myself 10 min down the road at the Ram's Head to kill time and still was early to the big event at 3AM. I told everyone that I was consulting with her pediatrician, Dr. Dog    :cheesy:

WARNING: Another one of my patented long-ass post-show writeups.

Dr. Dog played Montreal the other night, and through some good fortune and a very kind record label, I got some free tickets! The only issue was that I was a few hundred miles away in Toronto. I left in the morning of the day of the show, and what should normally be a five-hour drive turned into an twelve-hour nightmare, as the only major highway between Toronto and Montreal was shut down completely due to a nasty 75-car pileup.

With three hours left till showtime, I was still over 250 miles away and we hadn't moved an inch in over an hour. I contemplated turning around, but I was informed by a traffic cop that there had been an accident the other way, and the delay would be just as bad going home. So I prayed for some magic from the concert gods and sat there in silence, stuck in the worst traffic I've ever seen. This was not the kind of sick jam I was hoping for when I pictured seeing Dr. Dog in Montreal. The road finally opened up around 7:30pm and I booked it, as much as one can book it without being completely stupid, especially considering there was just a 75-car pileup.

I hauled ass directly to the venue, completely ignoring all "NO PARKING" signs and screeched to a halt right behind the Dog's tour bus. I grabbed the "PLEASE PLAY SAY SOMETHING" sign I had made the night before and ran in the venue, before being told I couldn't bring my sign inside. Not wanting to waste any time arguing, I ditched the sign back in the car and found a good spot inside the venue just as the Dog took the stage.

I was shocked to see that this venue was fucking TINY, and wasn't even close to capacity. 150 people inside TOPS. I walked right up to the first row on the side of the stage and rocked the FUCK out for the next two hours, releasing all the built-up tension I had accumulated during my nightmare drive. The Dog were so joyously loose, playing awesome deep cuts ("Say Ahh", are you kidding me?!) and bantering endlessly with the audience. At one point, Scott said that they had nowhere to be for a few days and would be up for playing past curfew and taking requests. Of course, I went FUCKING APE SHIT and ran right up on stage, quickly yelling my story in Scott's face. Scott nodded, then turned to the crowd: "This guy drove 300 miles just for this show and wants to hear Say Something, should we play it?". The crowd seemed to agree, and Scott called a band huddle. Was I finally going to get to hear my favorite Dog tune?! Toby stepped up to the mic, said "glad you made it man", and launched into "Worst Trip". Well played, Dr. Dog, well played.

The Dog just kept rolling, asking for more requests, leading to more fruitless yelling for "Say Something". Around midnight, they launched into "Easy Beat" and mid-way through the song, asked if anyone in the audience wanted to play guitar on the track. Sure enough, some dude stepped up, Scott handed him his guitar, and the dude ripped a solo while Scott grabbed a ladder, put it on stage and proceeded to climb it while singing. Only the Dog would bust out the rarely-used mid-show ladder gag. After the band finally cut off the audience guy from any more soloing, the song ended and the guy hugged the band. Scott turned back to the crowd, asking for anymore requests, when a beer was thrown at the audience dude who was just making his way off the stage. Scott was taken aback, asking "is that what you guys do here in Quebec? Throw shit? We're here trying to give you a unique show man, not cool". Scott gave the "throat slash"/show over sign to Slick, quickly launched into "Oh No", and they got the fuck off the stage.

I can't blame an entire city for the actions of one, but I'm from Toronto anyway, so I can still stay "fuck Montreal" with a clear conscience.

Thanks to the Dog for making what could have been the "worst trip" ever into a night I'll never forget. I feel gutted that if it weren't for that drink thrower, I could have possibly watched the Dog all night. But it was still by FAR my favorite Dog show in my (admittedly small) list of times seeing them.

Just guess I'll have to save this sign for next time...

My gut tells me that they wanted to play a Toby song. Though I'll never know! Rest assured, I'll be back at a show in no time, undoubtedly screaming in their face for "Say Something".

I will say, however, that "Worst Trip" is a fucking stellar song and absolutely slayed me.

Had a blast at the Houston show last night!

Disco ball during "The Truth" was definitely one of the highlights. This is kind of out of left field but whenever I hear that song I always think some rap artist should add some lyrics  kind of like how Shabazz did for Wordless. Or maybe one of the mmj forum members...think about it!

I'm seeing them tuesday for the fifth time, can't wait!
Easy Beat has like 3 or 4 songs that I really like, but honestly it just has the feel of a band's first album (and not the kind where a band puts all their best ideas on the first album and fades out after that) Is Easy Beat their first proper album BTW? I know they have some earlier material they've released.
Seems like everyone has a different opinion on what they're favorites are, so it's really hard to go wrong. Here's how I'd rate them:
1. Be The Void
2. We All Belong (my favorite for a long time, my first album I got by them witch many times ends up being my favorite)
3. Fate
4.  B Room
5. Shame, Shame
6. Easy Beat

I saw these guys live last Sunday, and holy shit are they fantastic.  Definitely the best live band I've seen save for MMJ.  They are now firmly placed within my top 5.

Scott gave the guy next to me in the audience the mic to sing the chorus of Jackie and Oh No.  It was a blast.  Toby went out in the audience during Lonesome.  I have never seen an Indiana crowd as into a show as they were for this one.  The venue was packed.

Easy Beat was for sale on vinyl at the show, so I finally got my copy! Beats the $80 price on Amazon.

I almost went to that show, but my friend ditched the week of, so I skipped it.  I didn't want to drive out of state.  I regretted it after seeing the setlist.

Dr dog will be featured on The Flamjng Lips Sgt Peppers cover album. They will appear on Getting Better. That's a hell of a lot better than mylie Cyrus

That setlist killed me! That's the ONE show they played SS, and it was near the start of the tour. Thought that would mean they'd be tossing it in from time to time. Nope! One and done! Being a song-chaser is a tough gig.

Has anyone else listened to their new live album, Live at a Flamingo Hotel?  It's soooo good, and it's getting me even more excited for OBH.

Yes! Got the vinyl on Tuesday and love it! I'm a live Dr. Dog virgin, so I'm very psyched for their set at OBH.

I actually just picked it up last night at their show. Just finished listening to it, sounds great. I love the songs they chose

They should have added oh no and say something, but either way it kicks ass!

They are my favorite live band next to MMJ. Especially if you're in a crowd where everyone knows the lyrics. Talk about a great time when everyone is singing Jackie.

At my first dr dog show, Scott handed the mic to this guy next to me to sing the chorus, such a blast.

You're in for a treat Johnny:) they are one of my favorite bands to see live, you won't be disappointed.  I'm no audiophile but I think this record sounds pretty great.  I love the songs they selected as well, but they easily could have doubled it.  They don't have a bad song out there.  EverythingChanges I would also add Today to that list of missing Easy Beat songs.  Can't wait to see them again in MX plus they are doing a three night run in Chicago in April!

You didn't see their set at Forecastle in 2012?  I missed the first part of it because it overlapped with Fruit Bats I think?  But what I did catch was great!

I could have sworn I remembered seeing you in the pit during Dog's set at Forecastle '12.  OBH will be a real treat for you, John!

For us across the pond: will there be a DVD/Blue Ray release of "Live at a Flamingo Hotel" similar to Okonokos ?

Doubtful. I believe (but someone correct me if i'm wrong) the live LP is a collection of songs over a tour of shows and not just one specific night. So they would have had to be taping each concert which I doubt they did.

You are correct. They took a collection of songs, a sort of "best of," from their previous tour to create At a Flamingo Hotel.  BUT this current tour is in support of the album, so maybe they will start taping along the way.  Perhaps their eight nights in NY were for that very reason.  I'm hoping for a live DVD!

I want to say they streamed at least one of the nights on video for Yahoo screen but I could be wrong. If that's the case then they had some cameras set up for at least one show.

There's nothing I love more than a good LIVE DVD of a band I enjoy. Would love to have a Dr. Dog one.

Probably won't get to catch this tour unfortunately.

I wonder how they decided this?  Was it pandemic related?

I guess it all depends on how "literal" they are with their wording. They didn't say they were done with performing live. I can see them doing occasional festival gigs. But who knows.

Strongly disagree.  Following the release of Live at Flamingo Hotel, they had a strong rebirth w Psychedelic Swamp, Abandoned Mansions (maybe my #1) and their last effort, Critical Equation, was also excellent.

I can't stand absolutes but I think I absolutely agree with you. Both Toby and Scott deliver the goods for the entire album.

I really like B-room and Be the Void but think each album has a few songs that aren't up to par.

Abandoned Mansion is the exception in the downward trend since Shame Shame, but even that isn't really quintessential Dr Dog. That was them trying to strip it down b/c things were getting stale and it did turn out pretty well. Psychedelic Swamp is a reworking of an earlier idea, if that doesn't scream we're near the bottom of the well then I don't know what does.

Factor in the increased solo activity and the writing was on the wall. And although they're very solid live, they don't really have that x-factor synergy that makes them a repeated must-see act. None of this is meant to be a putdown in the least. They got a lot out of what they are, just my 2 cents.

Agree completely. Abandoned Mansions and Critical Equation (even the B-Sides) are excellent.

Eric Slick did say this about the previous recording process: "We were either going to break up or make our best record" ... for me it was the latter so hope there is more to come from them
