Oh no, I can't locate the original reggae thread....... hope I can go in and save the old one from the old board!!
Til then..... Currently Listening:
Bob Marley and The Wailers - Natty Dread (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Z1gZf6RniE#)

Sugar Minott - Herbman Hustling (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2d34YLFOMeg#)
Oh no! The old thread is gone? That's too bad, lots of good songs, but I see and hear the new thread is starting out great! Nice songs

bob marley (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nlk9Sj4Ns2k#)
I like this thread.
Hey Walts! What's up with the Mighty Diamonds vid? ;D ;D Couple of Ruffryders cuts intermingled ;D Good stuff.
I haven't seriously listened to reggae in quite some time but it's always nice to stick my head in here and vibe on some stuff I've never heard before.
In the fall of '98, right about when I started collecting vinyl (that wasn't my dad's), I walked into a local record store and found an original copy of Jimmy Cliff's Unlimited. I was of course familiar with him from The Harder They Come and the soundtrack so I picked it up for $8. To this day, it might be the best $8 I've ever spent. I saw Cliff a couple of times over the last decade and what a cheeseball he has become on stage. He was actually tough to watch. Additionally, I know that Cliff gets a bum rap amongst many reggae heads but this early Cliff, rare, old school album is pure glory :) One of my favorites albums of all time in fact and I'm so glad I found it. Can't even find more than a couple of tracks on youtube.
Jimmy Cliff - Oh Jamaica. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjVetlZbtxo#)
JIMMY CLIFF - ON MY LIFE. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcrHCZwLIuc#)

Sweet tracks everyone!
Yeah, Ruckus the first vinyl reggae album I bought was a Jimmy Cliff record too! Weird. I got to see him at the Mile High Fest last year, and he was bouncing around all over the stage. I was glad I finally got to see him. I know what you mean about how he gets a bum rap, but to me I always have had a soft spot for him. I get that sentimental feeling when I play that album. I remember where I was living and what I was doing, and it brings it back home.

Loving all the reggae tunes in February. Especially when I look outside and there's about 4 to 5 feet of snow on the ground. Any chance of getting the link to the old thread? I know I still have the old forum bookmarked on my computer, but since it's broke (and so am I) I won't be able to pull it up for a while. Then again, I'd love to flood the new thread with all my favorite King Tubby and Scientist songs again ;D ;)

I haven't logged on the MMJ forum for several years and I'm excited to find this thread and other reggae fans here! I've been listening to reggae and going to shows since Jim James was about 6 years old.

Hahah heck yeah!!!! Great to have ya back! What monumental reggae shows have you gone to over the years!
And I sure would love to see a picture of JJ when he was 6! Such a cutie!
OMG, I've seen everybody! I honestly can't think of anyone I haven't seen except for Bob Marley. One of the best shows I've seen in a long time was Sly & Robbie & the Taxi Gang this past summer. They are mind-blowing! Check 'em out if you haven't already. One love.

Thought I'd share this Marley bit released today in the Trib:

Being from Pitt, I've cherished my bootleg copy of this since I was 17.... I can't wait to hear how the "official" release will sound!!!
P.S. this is more importantly related to Pitt today than football. That's right I said it
Thanks for sharing! I'm not too sure I could listen to that w/o feeling really sad though. I love the bit about how the air was thick w/ ganga smoke! Ha ha! That's the way it should be. Happy birthday to the Tough Gong!

WISH I WAS THERE!!! The recording is phenomenal.... the quality is not so hot, but after the first minute in it all just melts away and you just feel like you're there.... my favorite version I've ever heard of Could You Be Loved. For having the cd as long as I have, I only just recently found out he was even sick that night. And that article really surprised me to know how sick he truly had been that night.... you can't even tell on the recording. He just channels Jah and the circuit is complete... 8)
My possibly favorite part of the recording is near the end, when he shouts in his sweet accent, "THANK YOU VERY MUCH PEACEBURRRRRGH PENN-SEEL-VANE-E-AH!" Just wish I coulda witnessed such a thing........
Peaceburgh! 8) I like that!
Well, I guess a gotta hear it now! -Jah Bless

And it looks like I'll be getting a new Bob disc sometime soon! Thanks for the article, Wood. I'm thinking about going to Milwaukee to see The Wailers, and that article might have made my mind up. Oh, and seeing Grandma would be nice too ;)

Wow, I never imagined I'd hear reggae with bagpipes, but I guess a melodica doesn't sound too much different. Interesting project and very cool.
Thanks Deb. I had a great time working on this project. Did you check out the music video yet on youtube?

Cool. Check the member pics thread. Just posted a pic (albeit a crappy one) of when I got to meet him a couple years ago. Amazing man and family. Really sad to lose Kevin (his son). Spent a bunch of time with Kevin at that show and thought he seemed like a wonderful person. So sad to lose him at such a young age. I trade emails every now and then with Sonya (Spear's wife) and it sounds like we might have some show this Summer in the States. Can't wait.

:o :o :o That sounds UNRULY!!! And what a gracious invitation!! I guess it's not the most realistic thing for me to say I could be a definite attendant to all (or any!) of that.... but!! I'll be between semesters that whole time, and I like to think of anything as a possibility!! I'd lovelovelove to catch that string of shows with ya, I'll keep you posted as time rolls on here!! :D
 Cool! That would be so killer to hang out with some forum folks - especially if they like MMJ and reggae!!! :D I'm especially looking for someone to come with me to the High Sierra festival 'cause my husband is telling me that he won't be able to go to that one and it's gonna be tough to talk my local MMJ-friendly friends (of which I don't really have many) into driving up to Quincy for that one.
And I'm so bummed that I waited too long to get my Oakland, Fox theater tix. :'( General admission tix are already sold out and they have only been on sale to the gen public for a day! I'm sure I'll still score tickets, but now I need to buy they off of someone. Bummer.

That's a nice run of music!
We used to go the SNWMF what it was up in Marysville, which always seemed like a weird spot for a reggae fest. Mendocino County seems like a much better fit. The Anderson Valley Brewing Co. is within walking distance of those fairgrounds too! There's no way I could swing that, but HAVE FUN!
I used to go to the SNWMF when it was in Marysville every year. It was nice that it was on the river, but no, not the best location. Not enough trees! And too many young local punks sneaking in to the campground to steal shit from innocent concert-goers (we had a cooler stolen one year, and a backpack another year). Saw some great performances there though!
The Mendocino Co. fairgrounds is awesome and our first stop when we roll into Boonville is always the Anderson Valley Brewery! It's a great way to kick off the weekend! Sorry to hear you can't make it. Maybe next year... It's worth the drive.

Hey Deb,
Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. March was a crazy month for me! St. Paddy's Day season. Just getting back to normal now.
So to answer your questions.
I learned to play the bagpipes in High School and went to Iona College on a bagpipe scholarship. I choose Ireland to shoot the video because I have been there many times before and have friends and family on the ground. The bagpipes are a Celtic instrument. They actually originated in Egypt B.C. But for some reason everyone thinks the Scottish invented them. Anyway, read the daily news story below for how it all happened!

FYI - you can download this song on itunes now!!!
For roots reggae and dub, all you need in the world is Scratch Radio. If fact, if the only music (other than MMJ, of course) I had access to was this, I'd be perfectly happy..... :D

Couldn't get Scientist's - Steppers for some reason, so I added a different track from the same album.
I finally spent some time reading through this most excellent thread and didn't see my personal favorite US reggae group The Toyes. KFOG played the first song below every Friday at 5 PM which was really good fun when I was living in San Francisco. The whole self titled first album is great and I highly recommend it. We got to see them live once which was awesome. Enjoy!
