Title: Futurebirds
Post by: Ruckus on Mar 30, 2011, 08:46 PM
Man I do love these guys.  They are still touring and are hitting up Brooklyn Bowl on 4/4 for all you NYers.

Anyways, they have a new EP dropping on 4/1 called Via Flamina.

I had to bail on them a month ago because I got a NASTY stomach flu, I guess like what happened to you for Middle Brother.  I know Brooke and Bluesky saw them at the Mercury Lounge last month and I think Darkglow and Jon T. caught them open for DBT earlier this year as well.

While I'm bummed I haven't seen them yet, I wouldn't mind catching them for the 1st time when they have enough material to play a proper headlining set.  I swear there is not one song on either their S/T EP or Hampton's Lullaby that I don't like.

I love this band also....good find on the new EP, I had no idea about that.  I was at that Mercury Lounge show also and they were awesome, put on a great show.  I actually met the drummer and lead singer both at Terminal 5 on the first night and again on the second night of MMJ.  I was talking to them again before their set at the Mercury Lounge, i was surprised that they remembered me, but they seem like real cool dudes.   Like me, they are only 24 years old, so hopefully they have long careers ahead of them

I remember you posting about meeting some of the guys at T5.  That's awesome.  They seem like down to earth dudes...and soo young.

Ruckus, you're not kidding - I knew this was coming out today, so I went looking for it on their site and different pages, and I couldn't find it anywhere.  The only place I could find it was on iTunes.
Anyway, thanks for the link!  These guys are incredible.  Definitely worth the extra effort to find.

Wow that 'Wicked Game' is actually a cover of the Chris Issak song. That is a guiltless pleasure song and it really works with this band's sensibilities. Great EP, it's making my Friday!

Wild Heart is wonderous!

I was wondering if that was a cover of Issak's original!! I doubted it at first...but damn it smokes.

I'm most especially loving the pedal steel work on these new ones....seems like they're leaping forward in the right direction. I saw 'em last year in Birmingham and loved their show, they really bring some energy.

I hope critics don't try to drive this band's square peg into any round holes by writing them off as just another southern/indie/barn/reverb band.

You make a good point Easy but so far critics have been friendly to them.  Sure you can say they are very early Wilco/early MMJ/Fleet Foxes hybrid but they have multiple lead vocalists utilizing banjo or mandolin along with pedal on each song.  They also have a great pop/melody sensibility that makes all their songs easy on the ears without overdoing it.

While I didn't necessarily see the pedal as being too much more prominent (though I see what you're saying) on these four tracks, the extra guitar fuzz on Via Flamina and the keys on Wild Heart seem to be new welcome additions.

That Chris Isaak cover is a trip as well.  I wasn't sure who's song it was when I first heard it other than I knew the words to it immediately. ;D

OK Ruckus,

I like what I heard from what I have heard, so, here goes. I am downloading Hampton's Lullaby on your suggestion. I've been turned on to some really great music here over the years (and a couple of crappers).

Yeah, so much of their sound depends on who's singing.  Sometimes they strongly remind me of Jesus and Mary Chain ???

Oh how I love their exuberance and reverb.  I'd definitely grab either their s/t debut ep which used to be free on their site (still might be) or Hampton's Lullaby (only LP) before checking out the new ep.

I love FUTUREBIRDS.  I go to school in athens and have seen them at least 20 times, and they are as good as any band I have ever seen live!!! And they are rad dudes too, I really think they are going places, and I believe that I have been witness to the rise of one of Athens' finest bands since REM, no disrespect to wsp.

What I think sets them apart from most any band is that they all change/trade instruments/vocals on different songs, and it just adds so much to the live experience.
I have spent many goofy nights in the real ski chalet, its a real live haus in athens GA!!

long live FUTUREBIRDS.

holy shit! thanks Ruckus....that's the first live vid I've seen of them, they are tighter live than I wouldve imagined. They are captivating to watch, love how they are all dancing through Johnny Utah. Can't wait til they roll on thru up here.  This makes me think I don't like them enough even though I like them a lot already.

Had no idea they had a singing drummer. Love seeing those!

Gonna go ahead and bump this bad boy up. I JUST noticed the heartless bastards/futurebirds tour is making a stop in my town, so I'm pumped. The venue's website has the show listed as 'Heartless Bastards w/ special guests: Future Brides.' derp.

Has anyone seen them since forecastle?? Have they started playing any of the old drummer's songs??

Do you like early My Morning Jacket? If so, this band fills that void since they aren't making this type of music any longer. I'm seeing them with Heartless Bastards Nov. 2 in Nashville. I would have seen them last fall, but traffic congestion on a two lane country road prevented me from getting to the venue in a timely manner.

You are wrong.  And I completely understand.  I had never seen them and had given some of their stuff a listen on Spotify and couldn't really see what the big deal was.  I didn't get the "early MMJ" vibe from it at all.  I was a little bored with what I heard, and didn't think too much of them.  I then saw them open for White Denim in August and OMG they just blew me away!  Their energy, the songs, THE GUITARS...they were fantastic.  I SO got the early MMJ thing but they definitely are not MMJ copycats.  Really melodic, rocking, cool tunes.  But country tinged for sure.  I loved them!

Yep, agreed. They are good. Real good.

Somehow I had never listened to these guys until yesterday, and holy shit, what have I been missing out on?  This stuff is great.  They're playing Detroit next week with the Heartless Bastards but I'm pretty sure I work that night.  Poor timing to be sure.

You might have to be sick that night. If you know what's good for you. ;)

That would actually be really easy to pull off, but with the World Series in town next week, I'll need all the hours at work at extra money I can get...those tickets aren't cheap at all  :undecided:

Oh man, I love their studio output as well.  I still listen to the EP and Hampton's quite regularly.  However I do get where zj is coming from.  They go three electrics a lot for the live rockin' effect at the expense of remaining true to the studio instrumentation.  That's what made the Seney Stovall recording so special for me when they stayed true to the albums and used plenty of acoustic guitar and banjo.  Maybe even a mandolin somewhere.

As if my horrible boner in the shows section wasn't enough evidence (yup, boner is the new (old) blooper), I had a lot of fun at the futurebirds show tonight. Before the show, there were literally 15 people there and I felt really bad, and I saw carter hanging out by himself sitting in a chair. So, naturally, I strolled over like the smoothest ass ever and chatted it up.

He was genuinely the nicest band member I have ever talked to before a show (that beats toby from dr dog and john from deer tick amongst others) and he told me he was tired from being on the road but was excited for the show. Long story short, we did a shot of whisk and talked about how the cops on I90 are assholes and how he couldn't leave until I bought one of their 'circle' shirts. They put on an awesome, short, sweet show and I love these guys more and more. Heartless Bastards were also super awesome but this is a futurebirds thread. I love these guys.

thanks for the report Joey.   I'm there tonight!   I hope it's not so poorly attended- that always makes me feel bad too.   Unfortunately, tonight's is an early show (doors at 6 pm) because the venue turns into a dance club later at night.   So it could be just as bad.   Did it fill up for Heartless Bastards?
Title: Re: Futurebirds
Post by: joey_rogo on Oct 26, 2012, 10:23 AM
Sadly it never really filled up. The place has a big bar in the middle and most people never left the bar area until HB came out and even then there were maybe 50 people tops. It was the worst attended show I have ever been too. During futurebirds there were maybe 10 people standing in front of the stage with everyone else spread throughout or at the bar. It left plenty of room for Carter to rock out in 'the crowd' when he jumped off the stage during Ski Chalet.

There were many reasons it wasn't well attended... on a week night, in a smaller town, the radio station that was 'promoting' the show really didn't at all, etc. I'm sure there will be more people in Boston on a Friday.

Post by: mahg33ta on Oct 27, 2012, 02:05 PM
It wasn't packed by any means, but much better than the scene Joey describes.   We were talking to one of the guys afterwards (big beard / banjo) and he said that gig Joey was talking about was really strange.   In an odd strip mall next to a restaurant and a Golds gym?!

I enjoyed them a lot.   I like multiple singers and they definitely held my attention.   I'd see em as headliner.

I spoke to their drummer, IV, after the show. It was his 9th gig with Futurebirds. He's lovin' it and hopes he passed the audition. I didn't realize a recent change to their lineup. He loves being part of Futurebirds. I think the original drummer also sang some, from what I saw of a little documentary about their live EP.

Nice typo, English teacher!  Yeah, he said his name was "IV", and I was, "like this?" and gestured putting a needle into my arm.  He then said "yeah" as he rolled up his right sleeve to expose the tatoos of stars all over the inside of his elbow, along with a capital IV.  Can't find anything on him.  He says he's also in a "super group" with a member of the Dead Confederates, but I wasn't familiar with any of them.  Couldn't be Diamond Rugs, could it?

OK, as much as I like listening to the Futurebirds albums that I've got, I at least doubly, maybe tripley, enjoyed hearing them live. This was my first time seeing them in the flesh. Even though they opened for Heartless Bastards, they had much more stage presence and musicianship than HB.  Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed HB quite a bit, but it wasn't a whole lot different that listening to the album. Futurebirds had a really great live presence to them. I believe I'll make it a point to catch this band whenever I have the chance from now on. Penny and Ruckus, I'm pretty sure that you two are the ones who turned me on to this band earlier this year. Thanks.   .

"...Futurebirds meld the sweet, lilting, pedal steel and harmonies of the Stray Gators with the raucous, buzzing, distortion of Crazyhorse."

- Aquarium Drunkard

Nashville, TN – Baba Yaga, the new album from Athens, Georgia's Futurebirds will be released on April 16 via Fat Possum Records/VL4L. Baba Yaga features 13 songs that, much like the album's legendary mythical namesake, defy typical categorization. The ambiguity of Futurebirds' sound comes from their dynamic blend of experimental atmospheric textures, alt-rock tones and laid-back harmonies. Their music is equally as warm and inviting as it is brooding and assertive. The energy of their live shows is that of a primal, sweat-filled, cosmic rock revival with soaring harmonies. And the word is out. Hear Ya said, "...it's a requirement to see them live. There are few emerging bands with their energy and zeal on stage."

In 2009, Futurebirds released their self-titled EP, followed by their full-length debut, Hampton's Lullaby in 2010. Stark Online said the album was, "...tastefully laced with weeping pedal steel, mandolins, and imbued with a distinct flair for well-crafted and efficient melodies." Since then, the band released the EP Via Flamina (2011) and Live at Seney-Stovall Chapel, a special 2011 Record Store Day release that sold out on the same day, showing how rapidly their loyal fan base was growing.

Futurebirds has toured relentlessly, sharing bills with Drive-By Truckers, Widespread Panic, Heartless Bastards and Alabama Shakes. Their reputation as a must-see live act has landed them spots at major festivals, including, Austin City Limits, Outside Lands, Hangout, Wakarusa, Forecastle and Bonnaroo. The band was also invited to join the Bonnaroo Buzz tour (leading up to the 2011 festival), and were slotted between Gary Clark Jr. and headliner Grace Potter & The Nocturnals.

Futurebirds are a six-headed beast, with each member contributing something distinctive to their sound. Together they have crafted a style that is simultaneously familiar yet fresh. Whether it is the spacey folk of the opener, "Virginia Slims", the driving rhythm of "Serial Bowls" the hauntingly melodic "Death Awaits" or the epic "St. Summercamp", there is no doubt that Futurebirds have cemented their identity on Baba Yaga.

Liked their song 6 EP from a few years quite a bit, listened to it occasionally but not in at least a year, and completely forgot about Hampton's Lullaby being released and mostly forgot about them until Rowan posted a free 10-12 song download on facebook a couple weeks ago and loved that. After reading thru this thread never wouldve guess Wild Heart was a Stevie Nicks cover, that was one of my favorites on that download (called "Exhume" IIRC).

Excited for this new one, wish it was coming out before April 16th, but I have plenty more familiarizing myself with these other releases in the meantime anyway.

Saw them in Charlotte last week. First time seeing them. They were amazing. Was hoping for but did not get Happy Animals or Megachills but this did not detract from the show at all.

The Visualite in Charlotte is a great little venue. Was lucky to snag front row, eye level seating in front of the very small pit area. All the new songs were great probably got 4 or 5. They also covered Neil Youngs Unknown Legend which blew my mind away. Closed their set with Wild Heart which was also incredible.

Will see them again when they swing by my home front in Pawtucket, RI. See them if you get a chance probably my favorite newer band of the past 3 years.

Pre-ordered the new album. Can't Wait!

Hey wolof,

How long was their set when you saw them in Charlotte?

I actually did not keep track and it was really tough to tell bc I was so into it. I would say they played 4 new songs, 3 covers Wild Heart included and probably another 7-8 songs. Ski Chalet had some mini (song or cover) in the mid-section and was a very extended SC which is likely a staple of their set.

I would say it was between 1hr and 20 and an 1hr 40

I assume the upcoming shows may be a little heavier on the new album.

Excellent!  Can't wait to hear how all the new songs translate live.

Futurebirds put in a very joyous, high energy show last night in Nashville. Benny Yurco, From Grace Potter, joined them on stage for quite a few songs. He was there playing guitar for his gf Natalie Prass who opened for them. Even though I've listened to the live stream of it, I only listened one or two times do I can't tell you which of the new songs they played. I will say I enjoyed them all, the whole show was very good. I met some female Trucker fans there too who I'm supposed to meet up with at Shaky Knees. Although I doubt they are as huge of Trucker fans as some on here because they haven't seen Bill at a show ;)

I want to say that her name was either Denise or Jackie. I really don't think she was too deep into following the band although she had been to a few shows. It was loud, and I didn't pay as much attention to their names as I should have. Both of them were nice though.

I originally just thought it was ok when I first heard it. I got it on vinyl and have been non-stop spinning it and listening to it both at home and work using spotify. It has really grown on me a whole lot. Love "Heavyweights", "Strangers", "Tan Lines" the most right now. Really an excellent album overall.

Loving this album!  Dig is my new fave.  It's so Neil/MMJ and the song structure reminds me of a live MMJ song recorded that includes even tempo changes.  I would love for them to go in that direction in the future with lengthier, more complex compositions

Where should I start? Hampton's Lullaby or Baba Yaga?  Which has a little less country twang?

Both are excellent albums, but if you don't want the "twang", I.cant help. I don't find anything they do be too twangy. I might classify it as Americana music. When I first started listening to them someone told me that it reminded them of early MMJ and they were correct. However, you may have different tastes.

Most of what I have heard isn't too twangy.  I was just wondering which of the two albums possessed less of it.

From what I can tell by the small clips on iTunes, I'm leaning towards Baba Yaga.  The songs appear to be more expansive and complex, is this correct?  I want something juicy like Rollin' Back, or Steam Engine.

Maybe you would be better served to go to a streaming service and listen to both of them. Music is so subjective. I don't think you are going to find anything like Steam Engine or Rolling Back, but We may be thinking along different lines. You should listen and judge for yourself.

I grabbed their new one, and I'm digging it.

I don't necessarily mean something that sounds like those two songs, but something that has the reverby sound of Rollin Back, or the progressive layered build similar to Steam.

I'm aware that there is nothing else out there that sounds like steam engine.

Have a great time man!  Bring your friends.  Sounds like they've had some trouble attracting attention on the left coast.  At $8, even if they play only a 60 minute set, truly a bargain.

They played a good two hours in SF last night.  And everyone in our group was completely blown away, jaws on the floor, totally bowled over by the awesomeness of what we had just witnessed.  I have been desperately trying to find a running pardner to come down to the Visalia show, but no luck so far.  Jaye should really go with me!!  I would even consider coming solo if the ac in my car hadn't broken last week!!  Walterfredo, you are going to love.  I've seen them three times and each time I am in disbelief afterwards.  It's really quite something.  They're magical.  They give it 1000% and rock it like it's nobody's business.

Any Roll Callers going to their show @ The Parish in Austin on Aug 1st?

This will be my first time seeing them and I am really excited as I have missed them several times.

For people who have seen them, how are their shows? Their music is very chill on album but I feel like their energy is high on stage, is that true?

Just wanted to add how awesome this band is!

Drove up from San Antonio to catch them in Austin and they lived up to the hype.  Great stage presence, great sound, & great songs, really enjoyed the show.  They even played a cover of 'Dead Flowers' by the Rolling Stones in the encore.

After the show I told the rhythm guitar player my 2.5 yr old sings 'Sam Jones' and he thought that was the greatest thing.

Yeah it was a really great show. The opening band, Diarrhea Planet was really fun too. They started a slight "mellow mosh" during their set.

The "Dead Flowers" Cover was awesome. Though Ski Chalet, with its jam in the middle and then when they went back into the chorus minutes later was the best part of the show for me.

I can't wait to see these guys again. I hope a taping surfaces of "Dead Flowers" at some point.

justbcuzido did you find the crowd kind of lame?  At one point it felt like half the crowd left.  Starting to notice Austin crowds are not what they use to be.  I don't go to many shows in Austin anymore but I'm starting to notice this trend.

I was actually on the rail. But every time I looked behind me, people looked subdued. Although, we did have some ass throw a beer can at my friends face, my friend proceeded to punch him in the face a couple times until it was broken up by his friends who apologized. The band actually stopped for a second in between songs and asked if everything was all good to which we gave a thumbs up and they started playing. The guy eventually apologized to my friend and I for being a dumb ass. LOL

I do tend to agree that most of the times, the crowds in Austin can be kinda lame.

Last time I was at the Parish was in 2003 to see My Morning Jacket for the 1st time as a headliner.  They opened w/ Easy Morning Rebel that night too! That venue has come a long way.  Sound and lights were really great.

Yeah way too many "Bro" types there (which was weird considering the band). Was the Parish called "The Mercury Lounge" back then? If so, fucking epic show. I have a bootleg DVD of that concert. The Phone Went West was probably the best version I had ever seen up until Red Rocks last summer. You are lucky as hell to have gone!

All the crowds have been weird, sparse, or lame.  SF show was well attended, but these guys have not caught on yet, to say the least.  They are critics' darlings but they don't have a huge fan base yet.  I think I need to talk to my friend at Jam On and get him to start playing them!!

Now that OBH is over and no MMJ shows on the horizon, time to bump up some "other music".

Go see Futurebirds!!  SF show was amazing - even better than last year's show.  Not a lot of bands have 3 great singers who can do harmonies as well as the ultimate secret weapon - pedal steel!   Plus they're super nice guys.

Can't Wait!

Wolof7,
The Futurebirds are coming back to the Visulite on March 15.  Just saw it today on their website.

I'm not sure yet...I probably won't be able to get to it until tomorrow night...class tonight from 6-10PM.  And I haven't sat down and re-watched it, but from skimming through it, I'm pretty sure it recorded with few hitches...I was concerned at first!  I tried it on two computers...one worked, one did not.  The sound is not synced very well with the video for the first song but I think it straightens out after that.  Will keep you posted.  Watching this show was my consolation prize for not getting to go out Friday night...pretty cool that they made this available.  I would definitely use this type of streaming service (Tourpedo) again to see live shows!

Hey, I'm back.  Thanks, Yac, for the nudge!

Watched and the show was great.  Sound was off for the first song, but yes, evened out after that.  Too bad they streamed from a show with no one.  I've seen them in a room full of 300 people and a room of 6 people.  I just wish they'd draw a bigger crowd wherever they go.  They so deserve it.  Their sets could definitely stand to be about 30 mins longer, at least.  If they did that and brought it every night, they might be drawing more peeps to the shows.

Well they definitely brought it last night! Saw them at Rough Trade, a fairly new venue, in Brooklyn and there were probably aroud 200 people there, by no means packed. 'Ski Chalet' is like a perfect live song. They have this long breakdown where they go into another song than go right back into the end of Ski Chalet, I remember thinking how many other bands, bigger bands too, wish they could pull off a performance like that. You're right though, definitely could have been a longer set. They played for about an hour fifteen, and that's only because they came out for one last song after they left and everyone started doing the Tomahawk Chop. They seemed pretty stoked about that..

Went through Hotel Parties twice so far. I had high expectations considering Baba Yaga was probably my favorite album of 2013 and one of my favorites in recent memory. It's not bad, but not the greatness I was hoping for. Definitely several solid tunes, but the songwriting isn't nearly as strong as the last album imo. The last few songs feel especially blah. Maybe it will grow on me some more, but right now it feels like a 7/10.

Ran through it again. I dunno what I was listening to before, I was probably distracted. The back end is solid too. A couple slow burners, I think that's what threw me off. People should enjoy this album.

Saw the Futurebirds in Ausitn over the weekend.  Really great show and crowded!  Love to see the success for these guys.

One thing of note, there Steel Pedal player (Dennis Love) wasn't there for the show.  Is everything ok?  That steel pedal is such a huge part of their sound.  I hoping he's still with the band.....

I just saw them last Saturday in Oxford, MS and they tore it up, like they always do. They do have a new drummer (Jeff) after Johnny Colorado hung it up, and they have never replaced the pedal steel man, though they have had guys sit in on occasion. Most notably at their recent anniversary show in Athens, Robb.

I always forget to ask about the new record but I'll see if I can't find some intel.

The new LP is out. It's pretty good, maybe a little spotty on the back half. Lots and lots of horns which is a cool new twist, but also I miss the stank of their earlier stuff. I initially really enjoyed Thomas' songs on here, was a tad disappointed with Daniel's songs. Will probably grow on me as their past releases have.

Futurebirds and the Felice Brothers should tour together. Hard working musicians who touch on various genres of music.

Dude, when they come through my town, it's literally like 15 people there. A fucking crime against humanity.  Considering we are in the South and these boys have a pretty good southern rock sound and are fucking excellent live, i'm amazed no one shows up to their shows. People around here will bitch and complain about a lack of good live music, which is mostly warranted, but absolutely do not turn up or even try out new stuff.

They do really well here in Austin but we haven't gotten a show for a while.

Love these guys. Even when it's just Cartez & Womack it's a great time. Too bad Jacket hasn't given them some shine with an OBH invite. Thought the EP with Carl was a bit disappointing. But yeah the attention to amount of good music ratio is way off.

Make sure you check out their solo stuff too, both Womz and Carter's.
Love the Futurebirds!

This new Futurebirds/Carl album is a continuation of an EP they did together in 2021. It was only 4 songs, this one is "The Carl Song"

Is there a 21st century group that has as many good pipes in the group as these guys? Love their voices individually and how they blend. Just found they did this session with Carl.

Nice find Come Closer, that's really good. I agree with you on how well these guys voices blend.

Assuming it's long gone by now, but anyone know if Exhume is still out there? I remember it was available as a free download at one point way back when.

Saw Futurebirds for the first time last night. So much fun. Show was at Headliners in Louisville and had to be almost sold out.

I really only have been listening to the live album with Carl but really like what I know so far.

This was a fun tour with both Futurebirds and The Nude Party. This was also the last night of the tour so there were many sit ins throughout the night.

For the encore both bands plus the openers Fontayne were all on stage for Bertha and Sympathy For the Devil.

Great time.

I was tempted to pull the trigger and get tix for this show as it was the closest they came to Ohio on this tour but ended up not doing it.  Sounds like it was a good show!

Hopefully they will hit us up for an Ohio show on the next tour!!!
