I figured out the chords from "Old Sept Blues", "The Dark", "I will be there when you die", "By My Car", "At Dawn" and "Phone Went West". No solos or anything. I'd have to type them out first, but if you want, I can mail 'em to you.

I have some more, just have to type them out, but here's my first shot... The chords might not be on the right spot, if you know what I mean, but these are the chords to use, just listen to the record to figure out the timing and strumming and such.
By the way, as you can see, these songs are incredibly simple, and yet, so fucking amazing. How does he do it?  ;D

Well, since Two Tone Tommy is here, can't he help us, poor little guitar freaks with some tabs? No, for real now, I'm busy writing an "I Will Be There When You Die Tab", all I can tell you for now is to play it with your capo on the sixt fret, just like Jim playes it. The solo notes are easy to figure out, the rest is still somewhat blurry.

Hmm, John, that's a tricky one. A literal translation would be "plakkerig". However, in this context, that translation would be rather weird. Can anyone help on this one?

Now try putting your capo on the 6th fret instead of the first, just  like Jim plays it and transpone the notes of your tab to the new positions... And let the magic work.

I'm beginning to have serious doubts if my tabs are right. I had figured out the chords to I will be..., but it now turns out that I played the wrong chords in the chorus. And when I looked at Jim when he played By my car at the Paradiso show, he also played some different chords.
I could tell you that I always play O with Bm and A and D and A in the final part and How do you know with Am and G throughout the entire song, but I can't guarantee you that's right...

I powertabbed the bear and I put it on www.powertabs.net.  If you don't have the software for it, you can download it for free on this site. (for the people who don't know what powertab is: it is a program where you can give in musicnotes, so make a tab, and afterwards you can listen to it by means of this software, just hit the playkey)

let me know if it sucks or not (it's my first powertab and any comment whould be welcome)

Recently I tabbed lowdown and the way that he sings, within a while also war begun will be placed on www.powertabs.net. But for the moment I have some problems with old september blues.  I know the songs starts with an A chord but that's all. Can anyone help me out?

Since my last update I managed, thx to "O", to tab old september blues. I also did "the dark" and I did an update of " the way that he sings" (based on the bbc acoustic session). For the moment I would very much like to tab "I think I'm going to hell" so if anyone could help me out with the chords?

Today, it' a historical day!  The sixth mmj-tab has been posted on www.powertabs.net and I truly hope more will follow.  For the moment I'm trying to tab 'I think I'm going to hell" but I have some difficulties with the guitar tuning.

I think it would be a great idea to have the different guitar tunings of the songs on this site.  Maybe the moderator can help us, poor guitar freaks, out?

I can't see why powertab.net sucks.  I still had no problems with it. It's easy to use and you can find great tabs.  There are also other powertabrelated sites but I believe that powertab.net is the biggest one on the net, with the largest database.  So if you realy think it sucks that's your problem. And in the future, if you want express your opinion, maybe it would be useful to say why it's sucks so other people could learn something from it. It's very easy to break something down but it's much harder to say why you are breaking it down.

yes it is easier to break something down, its a lot easier than using power tabs.net. i apolizgize for not explaining why it doesn't work for me, because i don't know why it doesn't work. the text is coded and not legible when i down load it. once again i truely apoligize for the trouble, but i just want to play these songs this weekend at a small gig. At least, could you please, please e-mail me or post on this message board "the way that he sings". again, your help is greatly appriciated.

Hey,

I posted all the tabs on www.powertab.net.  You have to download the powertabeditor (it's freeware) to read the tab.  It is a lot easier for me this way, instead of typing it all out here on this messageboard and it will be a lot clearer and better for you, guys to learn how to play the songs. So I recommend you to look for this site and dowload the tabs. For the moment I tabbed: "lowdown", "war begun", " the way that he sings", "the bear", " the dark", "Old september blues" and " I think I'm going to hell". I hope more will follow, but for the moment I don't have a lot of time to analyze the songs.  
Bsut anyway I hope you have fun with it!

Can anybody help with "strangulation" ??  Sounds like it starts on a G#  and works up to maybe a C# but I know thats just not quite right...are they tuned weirdly? or playing high on the neck or something?

I often visit this topic and see all those tabs and I really want to play them and I wanna tab out things myself, but when I play guitar, I always play my own songs for hours, and I just never get to MMJ-songs. But still, y´all keep up the good work, and maybe I´ll get to it someday.

Thx for the tip man, but I don't have a capo, so I all have to tab it without it. And yes I know the fingersetting isn't that easy, but it's good for the fingers.  They become more flexible and it allows you to take more difficult fingersettings in the future. But considering the advantages of a capo, I think I'll buy one in the future.

Hey, I was wondering, as you guys have so many tabs worked out, isn't it possible to put them into powertabfiles. It's much better then just the chords. I've put already some tabs on powertabs.net but for the moment, I don't have much time myself to work it all out. But I will be glad to help working it out if help is needed.

May I also(or again) point out that there are 9 tabs of the jacket on the site www.powertabs.net.  It would be nice to hear some comment on these songs.  I think they're pretty accurate.  You first have to download the free software to play the tabs.

Ok it's on! Right now I'm working on one big holliday, including the solo's, but I don't know if I'm gonna  be able to tab the whole solo very accurate. I'll see. Feel free to give me any advice and if there are any suggestions for a particular song to be tabbed, just let me know.

Ok I never thought I could pull this off but I did.  I tabbed completely One Big Holliday, solo's included.  It's just amazing how simple the guitarsolo's are. And it sounds just like the real thing. Every moderate guitarist can play the jacket.  So the story is familiar: I've put the song on www.powertabs.net and within a few days it should be accessible for all of you.

I think I must be crazy puttin' all of my free time in this tabbing.

I don't think that your change is right.  If you play your riff along with the song, you will notice that you are playing in a different key.  If you play my riff along with the song, it is hmmm "perfect".  But thx for the tip. It is worth checking it out, because I know that my tabs aren't 100% correct? If you have other comment, just let it flow.

heh..just listened to it again, and both riffs are playing in harmony, the lower(in pitch) one is mixed left, the other right

Well if you would have done the bet, I think you are death by now.  I've just filled in your riff into the powertab of O is the one that is real and it sounds terrible.  Your riff is played in a different key, namely B minor while that part of the riff (my riff) is played in key D major, which is the key of the song.

Just try it out and let me know.  :)

Just go to www.powertabs.net , download the free powertabeditor and you can download 11 mmj tablatures and play them on your computer. The powertabeditor is a very good tool to compose tablatures and to play tablatures(sounds weird? just go to their site and reab about it).  It's all freeware!!!!!

Maybe the board system should be changed a bit- a tab section would be a real help since it seems to be popular part of the boards. Or maybe rather than a tab forum a tab section with all of the tabs that have been previously submitted.  Just food for thought

Good thought, though, but I don't think this forumprogram contains such a possibility. You cannot ad attachments or sort alike. I've already asked riny, but it is not possible unless the program is changed, but I don't think this will be the case.  But nevertheless some tabs are very easy to find, if you know where to look.  But I guess that goes for everything.  As mentionned before, www.altcountry.com and www.powertabs.net contain some fine mmj tablatures.  Have fun with them and don't hesitate to tab some songs yourself.

Nope It doesn't.  Some problems with numberrecognition.

I'll help you out.

Just click the following link and download the powertabeditor.  It's freeware so you don't have to pay a dime.

Install the program and make sure that your downloaded tabs get the extension ".ptb" (comes from powertab obviously) and you should get on your way to play beautifull mmj songs.

mahgeetah and golden are both in open E minor capoed at the first fret.  which i guess is open F minor.  once you retune it's pretty easy to follow.

EADGBE is standard tuning, not an open chord.  for E minor tune the A to a B and the D to an E.  the rest are the same.

Following the advice of several posters, I went to powertabs.net. I was really impressed! However, when I went to print out the music, my printer misprinted most of the characters and excluded several of the notes.  I was expecting this to happen to some extent, but not nearly to the degree that it did.  Now, the printout is pretty much worthless.  So, I am wondering, is there any way to download a font set/character set so I can get the whole sheet of music printed?

Hey Matthew,

I think the problem lies with your computer. I've already printed out some powertabs and everything went fine.Maybe you do have to change your printer settings? What's the exact problem?  Is everything printed out blurred?

Another possibility is to learn the tab sitting in front of your computer with your speakers on, so you can follow the notes played.

Hello all, new to MMJ and the board. Golden Chords are pretty basic bit J James uses an open eminor tuning, capo at 1st fret. Haven't really experimented with that, but I do capo 1st fret in standard tuning. Here is what I remember as far as chords in standard tuning and will give you a rough idea, please correct any mistakes as I am without guitar and doing it off the top of my head:

Verse:

Fmaj7 Bbmaj7 Cmaj7 Fmaj7

Something like this:

can anyone tell me if its possible to hide the music charts and only look at the tabs with powertabs cause its all to cluttered for me and cramed together.

im not a big fan of it but i enjoy playing the fills and solos of MMJ over the chords and all that jazz but the only tabs on the net are just chords only.

i need the solos and fills of one big holiday but i dont like the crampness of powertabs

sorry i was talking about the bars with the numbers on it are really cramped together and sometimes hard to read.

but it just took a while to get used to cause im used to normal internet tabs that are just tabs and note the musical notes and bars that i dont know how to read and confuses me. its no big deal now

i am wondering if anyone has figured out the golden intro yet (the finger picking part)

you just might see tab for "I Will Sing You Songs" and "If All Else Fails" sometime soon. I've been playin i wills ing you songs for a while, it's pretty simple. And IF aLL else Fails is simply a matter of me sitting down and learning more than just the intro, which is quite easy if you play with a G chord and just move the root around. It may or may not be capo'd. Once again, I need to listen. I just got the TN Fire yesterday, but the song sounds pretty easy.

By the way, on Golden - Jim has tuned to open E minor by changing the A and D strings.

On I will sing you songs.... and believe me.. I fought with this FOREVER.. He changes the G string a 1/2 or whole step down. I didn't realize this for 2 years when I heard an old live recording and you can hear him doing it before the song. Otherwise, that G string rings wrong as you're trying to play the intro lics. Any comments or additions you may want to make to these are welcome whole-heartedly. My ear is nowehere near perfect, and I may be missing a note in a chord somewhere that is making it sound a little off. Either that or my guitars tone is simply not as muddied as Jim's is int hese recordings. I can't really tell, maybe a bit of both. Either way, these seem to be pretty accurate from just playing along with the album. There's nothing that sounds weird to me ear, but perhaps I have a chord in the interlude slightly wrong in "If All Else Fails". I'm still playing with that one.

Do any of you guys know about any riffs or solos being tabbed out.

I've spent some time figuring out Johnny's part on the intro section (and between verses) of "the way that he sings" and several others.  I suppose the ultimate would be the tab of "One Big Holiday."  I wonder how Carl learned all of Johnny's solos.  I guess he either has a great ear or had some good coaching from others with great ears.

That would be sweet to get some solo stuff.  Any of you guys got any solos or riffs down?  Yo.

The only chords in the song are (I think) open, barred at the fifth fret, and barred at the seventh fret. And then the 12th fret, then seventh fret, and back to twelfth fret harmonics for the chorus.

I figured this out by watching Jim's hands when he played this solo acoustic at WPFK on 12-20-02.  I suggest you listen to the song to get the rhythm of the chords changes because they are a little tricky and the lyrics and the chords won't line up right on the website.  All of the chords are in bar chord form and are shown below.
A couple tips to add in once you've got the gist: Tap the body of the guitar to recreate the bass drum just before "just to send off with you".  Jim relies on the chord ringing rather than strumming like crazy, so figure out the right time to hit each chord and let them ring, especially during the "how long can you stay" build up.

By the way, I'm sure that most of those songs have a capo somewhere when mmj does them, but I usually leave it off because Jim's voice is too high for me most of the time anyway.

i was wondering if you all might want to expand this thread or start a new one that is dedicated to other people's song that MMJ covers?  I could dedicate chords charts and tabs for "Dream a Little Dream", "I'm Still Felling Blue", "Behind That Locked", "Suspicious Minds" and probably some others too.
I would love to see some tab for "Tyrone".

I agree, that is what it said on the tab page. the notes at the bottom said a "quick transition from the G chord to the D chord". I wasn't posting that up there to say it is correct i was looking for help on how to correct it. any suggestions?

hmmm

a G/D would suggest instead of a G as the bass note. So i suppose that a G/D would probably be a G chord played on just the DGBe strings, with nothin on the lower two being played.

it is old, relatively speaking.  They played it in 00 and 01.  There is a thread in the music section about it and we're trying to keep the thread alive so that the band will put it back in rotation.  Go ahead and give it a bump! :)

(not counted in full bars, but in symmetricitiousness. therefore, you play twice as much C chord as the the others individually. if youve heard it, its easy. One thing to remember, at the end of it, make sure you strum the top strings. Lay off of em for most of strumming, but hit them at the end of the bar for accent)

hey all - i've been lurking the boards for a spell now, just registered. anywho -

i've got a chord chart/tab thing worked out for 'knot comes loose', but im seeking permission to post it along with the lyrics, as per standard. i just do this because i wouldn't want to ruin the record for anyone who was able to exert some self control and not seek it out early (not to worry, i already have my double vinyl ordered).

i also have a dead knock-out of hopefully that im working on typing up and hope to post here in the next few days. i'm working on a few others from the new set as well (dandante for instance - is actually pretty simplistic sans the lead guitar line)

so - let me know if some folks would/would not like to see the knot comes loose tab.
