Title: The War on Drugs
Post by: Murph on Dec 04, 2013, 05:27 PM
Very excited to see this announcement today.  The War on Drugs will release a new album in March titled Lost in the Dream and will be touring.  I was so hooked on their last album, Slave Ambient.  It's definitely one of my favorite records from the past few years.

Just got tickets to War On Drugs show in Ventura for April. Missed OBH 2, but I only have to drive 10 miles for this one. The next show at the Ventura Theater is The Waterboys, which is kind of a trip, as that is what WOD last album reminds me the most of. At least in the vocals.

War On Drugs were great at OBH.  They really kicked the week off on the right note (pun intended).  Great tunes, and Adam's guesting with MMJ on the covers night 1 was great!

Seeing them again in October at the Greek Theater.  Will be great!

2 nights at the Berkeley Greek and then Phosphorescent (with Father John Misty) playing the following night!   Plus it's Hardly Strictly Bluegrass weekend!   Shug - aren't you due for a Bay Area trip?

* Oops- that's one night in Berkeley, one night at the LA greek.   :embarrassed:

actually one night at the LA Greek and one at Berkeley Greek, but will definitely have to consider the Berkeley show, perfect time of the year for a show at the Greek.

We are definitely due for a Bay Area trip and we are going to do that for Magpie Salute at the Fillmore in Sept.  That would be cool to see ya there if you are going (Rich Robinson, Marc Ford and Sven Pipien with Charity White and Joe Magistro from the Black Crowes).

For The War On Drugs, I think a Northwest trip to Seattle and Portland at the indoor theaters is gonna beat one night outdoors in Berkeley.

That's a pretty nice Sept and Oct for us, 3 great cities and venues and plenty of good music loving friends to visit!

I dig the part about Adam saying he wants to have an operational set up like Wilco: homebase in a city that is not LA or New York, have total control over their art and business, solid fanbase built through regular touring and never really stop working on their music, either touring or recording or writing.

He pointed to a band like Wilco, the experimental indie stalwarts from Chicago, as a model for the War on Drugs' future: "self-sustaining, self-governing, great fan base, tight connection to their roots — that's what we're trying to build over here," Mr. Granduciel said.

"I just need to work," he added. "There's no other thing with me."

I have not read this essay because I'm waiting to get the album and listen to it without another listener's impressions in my mind.  I also have not listened to any of the singles, I prefer to get the album and listen to the entire thing for the first time. but others have said this essay goes deep, I thought people might like to know about it.

I'm really stoked for this album and REALLY stoked for the two shows we are set to see in Seattle and Portland in October and hopefully more shows on subsequent legs of what I hope is as long a tour as there was for Lost In The Dream!

Me too!  They keep getting better and better.

That sounds like a cool article Shug, but I'll wait until I hear the album a few times before reading (delaying for the same reasons you stated above).  Seeing them twice is the way to go.  I'm not sure my once in DC is enough.

Not many new albums get the full-on listening release event treatment in our house, but a new War On Drugs album does and this one paid off beautifully!  We got in the right frame of mind with some drink and smoke and some pre-main event music before putting on and cranking up A Deeper Understanding to listen to all the songs for the first time in one shot (I avoided listening to any of the singles they dribbled out in the past few weeks) and by the second song I was up and rocking the air-guitar with a few fist pumps thrown in!  Up All Night will be a killer show opener and Pain was an immediate standout. That is a frickin' SOLID two-song album opener! Also digging on Thinking Of A Place and Clean Living after one listen.

The arrangements sound tighter and more composition-oriented to me than Lost In The Dream but there is also more aggressive guitar jamming, too.  This shit is gonna soar live! The superb, detailed, mood and vibe-focused recording craft is now joined by a new level of ensemble performance craft that is clearly the result of extensive touring for the previous album.  Granduciel's artistic intensions are clearly on display again and to me he operates on an entirely higher level of musical brilliance than most artists currently recording and touring these days.  I was doubtful that they could pull off a second brilliant album in a row, but after one listen it sounds like they've either come really close or maybe even pulled off another record as good as Lost In The Dream!  Now I'm even more stoked for the up coming tour!

Cannot get enough of this album right now. Those solos in "Strangest Thing" are fucking magic. And the harmonica in "Thinking of a Place" kills me every time.

The tones Adam got on this record could cut through a bank vault. Soooo fucking searing. Can't wait to witness these tracks live in the fall!

my first couple of listens (been through about 6 so far now), I wasn't sure how this stacked up with LIAD...but man, I am not prepared to say I like it better than LIAD, but it's right there.

Agree with Shug on the fantastic 1-2 punch of a start and Strangest Thing might be the best track (IMO) and the closest thing this album has to An Ocean In Between the Waves. Thinking of a Place is close to Under The Pressure in scope and sound.

It might be a cop out of sorts to keep referencing songs on this album to ones from LIAD, but I honestly have no other frame of reference for these songs.  I've only streamed the album but plan on picking up the LP this week.

Makes me so happy to know that these types of albums still exist.

Gave this album a listen on Saturday night with some friends sitting around the fire pit in our back yard.  We too got in the right frame of mind with smoke and drink but I still haven't given it the proper listen as it was more socializing than listening with our friends, but I plan on getting into it tonight!  From what I did hear on Saturday, I was totally impressed.  Trying to follow up such a great fucking record as LITD was would be very daunting for most artists, but it looks as though these guys may done just that.

I can't wait to see these guys live again!!!

Yeah, O, good lyrics for sure, that will surely connect with lots of people.

"I resist what I cannot change"

We watched that KEXP show last night and it seems like the band is getting tighter, if that is even possible from how tight they already were.  LD was saying its like Adam is relaxing a bit and on a subtle level it is allowing the rest of the band to contribute more and gel as an ensemble even more.  A little bit less like Adam fronting and the band backing, but everyone all together, at least in the jams and the sympathetic accompaniment.   I think they are getting close to doing a thing that Wilco has done for years in their past lineup, just getting more and more telepathic.  Adam did say in one of those interviews that he is not feeling the need to fill up every moment with sound, he's now realizing that leaving some space lets the music breathe.  I think we are hearing that in these live performances.  They are freaking on it and the tour hadn't even really started when these shows were filmed.

I think these upcoming shows are going to be fan-fucking-tastic!

We really do have some great venues here. The Palace is incredibly cool and bigger than the Brown and I go there more often. I've only been to The Brown 3-4 times but I just love it there. Was thrilled to see this show announced.

Indeed, both of those rehearsal videos are fucking amazing performances, so subtly brilliantly Dylanesque vocals and lyrics but with fantastic melodies and all the sincerity and passion of early U2.  WOD are definitely peaking and I can't wait for the two shows we are seeing in Seattle and Portland in a little more than a week!

Thanks, parkervb for pointing them out.

Strangest Thing on repeat  :headphones:

I can't get enough of Strangest Thing, either.  Also Knocked Down.  The ballads have the most majestically beautiful chord progressions and melodies.  I also love that they use the Fender Rhodes 70s electric piano on these tracks, what a warm soothing sound.  I'm turning to these songs everyday lately for a little bit of peace and refuge.

The shows we saw in Seattle and Portland last week were all that I hoped, better performances even than the last tour.  Granduciel's epic soloing on Eyes To The Wind and others is getting Neil Young-like, but with more melodic structure and crescendo payoff.  Put a Gibson Les Paul or a Gretsch White Falcon in his hands and listen to him soar! People are giving them standing ovations, at least they did in Portland.  Seattle audience sat nearly the entire show, once in a while standing up for a few seconds at the end of a loved song.  I miss the standing only venues that I saw all three times on the Lost In The Dream tour.  Also just a little bit bummed I missed hearing Accidentally Like A Martyr second night in Seattle, the show we did not make.

Looking forward to the next US leg to be announced, wish I was in Denver this weekend for the Ogden Theater shows.

I'm glad the shows were so good Shug.  I'm so excited for their DC show.  It's at a venue that just opened called The Anthem.  I doubt they will sell out (capacity is 6,000), but I'm hoping it's a standing crowd instead of seated.

I've been going to Nothing To Find for repeat listens.  There is a little riff in there that is so good but they don't repeat it enough!

Saw these guys at Massey Hall in Toronto over the weekend and HOLY SHIT this band is on fire right now. In terms of fiery, jammin' live shows, this was up there with MMJ and Roger Waters for the absolute best I've seen this year. They're really fleshing out these tunes and are in complete control of tone and vibe. Not to mention they've got a super fucking sick light show. They smoked out an entire 3000-seat theatre and then shot out rainbow lazers during "Under the Pressure"! Who else does that?!

"Thinking of a Place" was stretched out to 15 sublime minutes, but unfortunately that pushed them to their curfew and we did not get an encore. The previous night, they busted out "Like a Hurricane" in honor of Neil after their main set, so that was a bit of a bummer. But I suppose you can never go wrong leaving the crowd wanting more.

WOD have now offically been elevated to "never fucking miss these guys" status. A+!

Shug, you said you're looking forward to the next leg..any idea when that will be announced? And do you have any thoughts on what region it will be? I'm down here in FL and we often get left out, hoping that's not the case for this tour.

I was at the Massey Hall show on Saturday.  We were really hoping for Thinking of a Place - sadly they didn't play it....though Like a Hurricane was fun.   For some reason they don't play TOAP all that often - it is my favourite song on the album and they do play most of the new album each night.  Even without it was a stellar show..Under the Pressure is amazing this tour.   They can really channel Springsteen/Neil Young/Petty/Dire Straits but in a modern way that is unique.   Highly recommended.

The DC show was off the charts.  The segues between songs were MMJ-like.  Great setlist, so many great songs, stellar jams, and very cool lights all set the mood and atmosphere right up there with the best of the best.  Thanks Parker for the link.  It has been fun to revisit the show.  They were on the road forever for their last album, and they're bigger and better than ever.  So I predict more US shows in 2018.  I will be there!  oistheone is spot on..... A+

By the way, The Anthem is a new venue in DC, and it outstanding.  DC has never had an MMJ multi night run, but hopefully that will change with this new venue being very appropriate for that.  I've been there twice recently and got perspectives from the floor, the second tier, and third tier.  The back of the floor doesn't even seen too far from the stage.  The top tier is quite high up though.  Plenty of bars with no lines and great selection of beers.

The War On Drugs recently set out on tour in support of their new studio album A Deeper Understanding. Last month the Philadelphia-based band stopped by local radio station WXPN to record songs from the album during a live session for World Cafe.

Frontman/guitarist Adam Granduciel, bassist Dave Hartley, keyboardist Robbie Bennett, drummer Charlie Hall, guitarist Anthony LaMarca and multi-instrumentalist Jon Natchez were just a couple of days into their tour when they assembled at WXPN Studios in Philly back on September 20. Host Talia Schlanger witnessed the group performing the A Deeper Understanding tracks "Pain" and "Knocked Down." Check out the pair of tunes below:

I got no special info, just going off the fact that the tour for the last album went on for a year and a half at least.  This one should be the same, I'm figuring.

I love hearing all the stoke and passion for the live show, I'm feeling' too!  Thanks for sharing your thoughts, dudes.

I'll be looking for more dates to go to, preferably some more multi night runs wherever they may happen.  Looks like that won't be until March or April at the earliest with the Europe and Australia tours in Nov and Feb. Tempting to try for some of those Dec US dates, but not gonna travel that far for just one show in a city.  I'm sure more dates will be announced in the next few months.  Can't wait for it, gotta see these guys as much as possible this tour, like O and APR said!!

Yeah, awesome, thanks for finding this, dude!  We watched it last night, captured the live set of this tour with good sound and camera work. Leave it to Northern Europeans to know what to film and how to do it right.

Strangest Thing has that epic guitar solo, such a beautiful song with an emotive Neil Young-like solo that Adam tears it up on. The way this song is played live might be the one to turn on classic roots rockers who are still skeptical or have not yet been able to get past the 80s sheen. Nice to have Thinking Of A Place in the set since we didn't get to hear that at either of the two shows we went to so far.  I can't believe Neil Young fans are not all over this new set of songs especially the way they are played live.

Nice trivia regarding the shirt Shug.  He was wearing the same shirt in Brooklyn (although I was too far away to see what exactly was on the shirt and wouldn't have known those fact anyway).  Enjoy the AZ shows.

I'm going to check that audio parkervb and am pretty sure that exact show is pro shot video on You Tube that I've seen.

I went on thursday at the Union Transfer which was outstanding. Thought the show started at 7:30 so i got there around 7 and doors weren't even opened yet. So when they did finally open I got rail.  Played for like 2 hours (til about midnight). Funniest was the opener, Tim Heidecker playing a song called "Hot Piss". Didn't know at the time but apparently he's a comedian, actor and musician.

man, I missed out on the sale last week. Will have to see what I can do on secondary. Hoping to hit one of the Philly shows and maybe The Anthem.

not to rain on any hopeium for them playing OBH, but hard for me to see a band that is booked to play MSG on their next tour take a 2nd line spot at a resort run. Just my thoughts on that. Hope they do though!
