Somebody suggested this on facebook.  It really is a great album.  Has that country sound that hasn't been around much the last few years.

He's opening for Jason Isbell at the Ryman in Oct, but its sold out.  Hope I get to see him live soon.  I have a nicely recorded live show from Nashville last year (maybe from 3rd and Lindsley?)  Probably a radio broadcast.

He's playing the Troubador in LA in Sept.  LD and I have been looking for a good excuse for an LA trip, it could be this show...or J Roddy at the Troubador in Oct.

Sturgill's guitarist sure sounds good.  Is that guy still in his band?

I just noticed the bass drum head is Kentucky's state flag! Cool!

I hadn't checked Sturgill out much yet and didn't even know he was from my home state.

Saw Sturgill at the Bluebird in Denver last night and WOW, he is good! The man has soul. I couldn't recommend him more. The time to see him is now. The Bluebird ended up adding last night after the first night sold out and last night sold out as well. Tickets were $15 at the box office and then were $135 on stubhub. If you don't have his albums, get them now. I like both equally.

Sturgill is our house's Artist of the Year for sure.  We're seeing him in a small club next February.  Pro Tip if you have a special lady in your life: at home, put on The Promise from Metamodern and slow dance.

yeah, the hype right now for Sturgill is huge.  All these small venues are selling out and lots of forum folk across the country have been shutout, including me here in Phoenix last month.  those of you seeing him in the clubs are scoring, that is for sure.

FYI, there is already a thread on Sturgill going here.  http://forum.mymorningjacket.com/index.php/topic,18416.msg349197.html#msg349197 (http://forum.mymorningjacket.com/index.php/topic,18416.msg349197.html#msg349197)

It's what country music is supposed to be. I read somewhere that Waylon Jennig's son (I think it was Shooter) said Sturgill is the closest thing he's ever heard to his dad. True outlaw country!

Very very excited to be seeing him in February in Philly!   :cheesy:  I have ALady to thank for discovering him. Her post on facebook a few months back mentioned the "cosmic american" theme, and I had to click + have been hooked ever since.  Wish I had a ticket for the Asheville show, but it would be tricky to make it to both at this point!  Can't wait!

so incredibly bummed about the recent show cancellations. I hate that he & the band are sick, but to cancel the show and then announce the "make up" show is at a venue that is 10x the originals size is not cool IMO.  Not to mention, he's listed as the opener for OCMS at that date.

It just seems like they took advantage of a bad situation to rebook at larger venues for more $$$.  I know a band's got a right to make a buck, doesn't mean I can't be bummed about missing them play a 350 seat venue.

well, looks like I will get to see Sturgill in Norfolk this year.  So stoked, it's not a tiny venue like the Broadberry but its a decent one that is about 1500.

Love that he's stressing this is an full album and not allowing them to stream individual streams.

He's talked about writing this album for his son and as a new dad myself, the start of this album hit me right in the feels.

"hello my son, welcome to Earth. You may not be my last but you'll always be first. I wish I'd done this 10 years ago. But how could I know that the answer was so easy."

Saw them last night and goddamn, what a band. The addition of horns, while on paper sounds kinda weird for a country band, takes them to an entirely new level. These guys fuckin' JAM! I saw the pared-down lineup last summer and thought it was the most psychedelic country I've ever heard. After last night's show, I can NOW say they are the most supremely soulful psychedelic country band I've ever seen. Sturgill is so fuckin' authentic. Makes a lot of other "country" or "soul" acts look like a goddamn joke. What a show.

Keeping with Sturgill's wholly unique concert presence, he did all his 'hits' first and then ENDED the show with a complete performance of the new album. No encore. Baddddddass.

So Sturgill continues to be the greatest thing in Nashville. He posted up outside the CMAs outside last night and streamed it, answered questions and played a few songs.

http://www.rollingstone.com/country/news/watch-sturgill-simpson-busk-take-questions-outside-cmas-w511372

You can catch the stream here on his FB live https://www.facebook.com/sturgillsimpsonmusic/

Some hilarious moments like when he said Joe Rogan has that "mad scientist Cali weed", says he's listening to ELO and Run the Jewels. Also sounds like he's got grand ideas for his next album and sadly, he says he's sticking to his 5 album plan.

i first heard him mention it on the Joe Rogan Experience. He expands on it in the FB Live on how it's a narrative of a life journey of a human soul. He said Hightop was a past life, Metamodern was ethereal, the soul's journey, Sailor's Guide is about birth & life lessons, and his next album will be about life & sin and the last one about "returning to the light".

Sounds like he's doing more producing too

i'm always on the lookout for recordings of sturgill shows.  recently found some good ones at this link

http://www.panicstream.net/vault/category/sturgill-simpson/

the sound quality varies, but there are some good ones.  i recommend the 2014 denmark show, the two 2015 nashville shows, and the 2015 austin show is a great sounding fm broadcast.

check it!

Interesting.  While I'm not a fan of only 5 albums, I like the story arc of the idea.  Dig his tunes.

Pretty hot guitar playing from Sturgill (and Stapleton getting into some duel riffing) sitting in with Chris Stapleton on SNL this weekend.

https://www.jambase.com/article/sturgill-simpson-new-album-anime-movie-sound-fury

"We went in without any preconceived notions and came out with a really sleazy, steamy rock n roll record," Simpson stated in a press release. "It's definitely my most psychedelic. And also my heaviest. I had this idea that it'd be really cool to animate some of these songs, and we ended up with a futuristic, dystopian, post-apocalyptic, samurai film."

YES!!!

Mad Max meets Ninja Scroll soundtracked by Sturgill? I am 100% here for it.

I will say I hope it doesn't carry that video game feel throughout the album.

So, Sound and Fury is on endless repeat these days. So unique, while at the same time clearly influenced by disparate artists like Prince, Meatloaf, and Pink Floyd. Not sure how to classify it, other than awesome.

I like where Sturgill's head is at on this one.

From the website:

THE BALLAD OF DOOD & JUANITA
THE NEW CONCEPT ALBUM BY STURGILL SIMPSON

SAYS STURGILL OF THE PROJECT:

"I JUST WANTED TO WRITE A STORY— NOT A COLLECTION OF SONGS THAT TELL A STORY, BUT AN ACTUAL STORY, FRONT TO BACK. [THIS ALBUM IS] A ROLLERCOASTER RIDE THROUGH ALL OF THE STYLES OF TRADITIONAL COUNTRY AND BLUEGRASS AND MOUNTAIN MUSIC THAT I LOVE, INCLUDING GOSPEL AND A CAPELLA. IT IS A SIMPLE TALE OF EITHER REDEMPTION OR REVENGE"

Ya i believe i read from an interview a WHILE back that his plan was 5 albums, i assume that means 5 standalone albums and that the Cutting Grass Albums wouldn't count since they're mostly covers of his songs done blue grass style

1. High Top Mountain
2. Metamodern Sounds in Country Music
3. Sailors Guide to Earth
4. Sound & Fury
5? Ballad of Dood and Juanita?

yes he said the 5 album thing on a Rogan appearance back in 2014 and that he has them all mapped out. But he may have changed his mind since then. Sound & Fury was the direct result of his burnout due to touring and may not have been in that original plan.

I may have to miss Sturg for a 3rd time due to previous commitment. Its the Outlaw tour stop here in Va Beach. It's like 5 miles from my house. Gotta make that call soon.

I saw Sturgill on the Outlaw tour a few years ago at the Hollywood Bowl.  He was great.  He played his cover of The Promise, which blew my mind when I first heard it.  It was great to hear it live.
