Title: The Waterfall II
Post by: johnnYYac on Jul 06, 2020, 01:21 AM
Has no one posted yet about the new album, out any day now?

The Waterfall II was accidentally revealed when a pre-order page went live for a short period. It offered a limited (1000) yellow vinyl, with or without assorted swag. A few folks managed to place orders before the page vanished. That's all I know. I'll post track list and more soon.

I'm sure this will get deleted too...

I have to say I am not that excited by this at this moment. If I had never heard about the Waterfall II, this would probably get me amped. I'd much prefer a live album (I don't think that's an uncommon position either). I guess they don't want to release "new" music until they can tour behind it and there's nothing wrong with that. Just don't hit us some limited edition album with Spotify exclusives and expect all of us to jump for joy. My "buy all music MMJ-related" position will be tested with this release ;)

Don't let my salty nature dampen your excitement by any means!

New MMJ songs from 5 years ago would be amazing in these otherwise crap days.  I thought I read that MMJ finished up in the studio earlier this year just before everything closed down.  That could mean Waterfall 2 later this summer and NEW album out a bit later.  I'm looking forward to the announcement and hearing the new stuff.

i think that was the intent, but my hunch is that it'll be available to whoever visits the link. i was able to order one without issues by just navigating to the link the other night while it was still up.

So we could potentially see Waterfall II released along with the re-release of Chapters 1 & 2 this year (all but confirmed by Darla) followed by recently recorded material in 2021 that'll be backed by a tour... Sign me the eff up.

The recently recorded material being separate from Waterfall II is the only thing not clear I think.

Also, the band's body of work speaks for itself at this point. People complaining about the band's output is so tired. They could release nothing but a cover of the I Love You song by Barney over the next 10 years and I'd still be happy.

it was mostly a case of right time/right place. somebody on facebook had stumbled across it and shared it to the fan club group.

It not being available [physically] in Europe is a disappointment but I'm thrilled this is actually happening! Though it's not their best album The Waterfall is my favourite on nostalgia grounds alone so I'm extremely ready for this! Can't wait to get blazed and devour a body of new Jacket songs in one sitting :cheesy:

I don't even play them that much these days but I HAD to have that LTD multi-coloured vinyl, so pretty!

Anyone else keep going back to the clip they posted and wondering how they managed to sit on a jam like that for 5 whole years? Can't wait to hear the whole thing. I've experienced many bands tease a 'part 2' record over the years and I think this may only be the second that's actually happened!

Also, I suck at maths/time zones but I think the album will be out ahead of the listening party in the UK? Gonna try my hardest to wait!

So I'm curious to your take here, about the live album.  The guys just released ten nearly complete shows on nugs.net, but do you feel there is a separate 'live album' waiting to be released, something maybe recorded on multiple nights of a tour and pieced together as being representative of whole tour maybe?  Only asking because I know there's been lots of talk about a live album being complete, ready to go.  But they just released 10 shows, so I'm confused.

Just curious as to your (parkervb and others) thoughts.

So i ordered the deluxe vinyl but when i ordered (less than an hour after posted mind you) it already said the signed photo was sold out. Now i'm seeing also this message:
The first 1,000 orders containing this PRE-ORDER item will ship after August 24th

Due to increased demand we have furthered production and all orders after the initial 1,000 will ship after September 7th
Does that mean the first 1000 all contained the signed photo, aka pre-order item? and they all sold out by the time i ordered, so now what i ordered won't arrive until after September 7th??  If so i'd love to know so i can cancel and preorder elsewhere...

Should be very interesting when they tour next. With The Waterfall II and the potential of a brand new studio album... how will they trickle in the rest of the catalog? We always know after a new album we will get 90% of the new material mixed in with the rest of their goodness. But now, with the possibility of 20 or more new songs to smush into a setlist?
Jim did say he regained appreciation for the live show experience during this long quarantine... so shall we be in for the old fashioned 3hr shows? Wishful thinking I'm sure, but still curious how they will put together the setlist

We always a know after a new album we will get 90% of the new material mixed in with the rest of their goodness. But now, with the possibility of 20 or more new songs to smush into a setlist?

hopefully they stick with the format of the original waterfall tour and play multiple nights in each city.

Multiple nights in more intimate theaters/venues seems like the best approach now.  On all levels, it just seems like what works best for the band and the fans

Among the MANY highlights:

Still Thinkin' - Some of the most 60s-sounding pop MMJ has ever recorded. Sounds like a catchy reworking of "Exploding", until it breaks into a classic Jacket ending with Jim rippin' huge licks, Bo layin' down the vibes and Carl wailing on sax.

Climbing The Ladder - MMJ's most rockin' honky tonk ripper on anything since It Still Moves. This track is a straight barroom dancefloor burner, with an awesome multi-guitar attack -- some slippin' and slidin', some chicken pickin' and some fuzz rippin' and roarin'. I am fuckin' PUMPED to dance to this live.

Feel You - This was the song teased the other day. And for DAMN GOOD REASON, as this is the next Jacket epic. Feel You is Lay Low's more mellow brother, with huge, soaring Jim vocals and all the guitar weaving magic that MMJ fans crave. And somehow in 2014, Bo had already brought the Floyd fairy dust to the mix?! This song is a stunner.

Beautiful Love - A pleasant soul chugger that is hugely elevated by a sick fuzz solo.

Magic Bullet - We've all heard this before, but it somehow sounds fresher here? I suspect this is a new, supremely spacious mix, filtered through a Funkadelic plugin. #wildtones #crazyhorns

Run It - An awesome Bill Withers-esque 70s singer-songwriter jam. Tommy makes this one pop with a sick Muscle Shoals groove, and Bo continues to elevate every song he's heavily featured on.

Wasted - Starts off sounding like Dan Auerbach run of the mill riffin' until it grows into the next Run Thru, crazy breakdown and all! There is a HUGE instrumental section which features incredible solos by Bo, Carl AND Jim! Not to mention BIG horns. This will be a live staple for years to come.

First Time - Wonderfully saccharine and supremely jammin', like the much happier cousin of Only Memories Remain. A perfect closer to the Waterfall saga.

The only bad thing about this album is how BADLY it made me want to see these tunes live and I know that ain't happenin' for a while. Here's to a huge 2021 for MMJ!

If I couldn't be more pumped! Great review!

Definitely can't wait to hear the Welcome Home version. Love the xmas album and WHATTA SURPRISE to hear it live at The Port Chester run!!!

What about Spinning the Wheels? Curious about this one too, since the song, according to Jim, is basically why we are getting these songs released now

Album is up for pre-order on iTunes now if anybody here still buys from there! Posting the tracklisting with song lengths in case anyone like me is a loser who gets excited by seeing stuff like that for the first time!

  1 Spinning My Wheels - 4:47
  2 Still Thinkin' - 4:13
  3 Climbing The Ladder - 3:00
  4 Feel You - 6:13
  5 Beautiful Love (Wasn't Enough) - 2:51
  6 Magic Bullet - 5:12
  7 Run It - 4:37
  8 Wasted - 6:06
  9 Welcome Home - 3:46
10 The First Time - 5:45

The First Time is already listed as purchased for me so I guess it's the exact same version as the one from Roadies. I wondered if the mixing might be any different or if anything might have been changed but I guess not!

I was wondering if there were different ones there than appear on the Waterfall II?

The front end of this thing has Brian Wilson/Beach Boys dreamy trop pop vibes. Kinda reminds me of the psychedelic soul of Eternally Even, but with more structured songs. And oh yeah they gave Magic Bullet the Evil Urges treatment and it's a definite improvement. Bill Withers is a great description of Run It, can't come up with anything better there. Wasted is the rocky-est song here, and are those Quick Like a Flash licks towards the end?? Welcome Home is pretty true to the OG version, maybe heavier on the pedal steel. If you like mellow spacey/dreamy MMJ you're gonna dig this. Liking the sax touches on some of the songs. Bo's keys take center stage a couple times. Great shimmering backing vocals. The Waterfall had some standout tracks and some filler ones for me, and kinda had the loud quiet loud song sandwich approach. This one is more low-key, but grooves consistently all the way through. Actually not sure how excited I would be about a lot of these songs live, but I'm loving the studio versions.

I thought they gave Magic Bullet some stank, but admittedly it's been a while since I heard the OG.

Just read the review of the album on iTunes which actually consists of Jim talking about each of the songs. It's a good read. He also mentions the new new album and that it'll be a while before they finish it due to the pandemic.

Trying to avoid the leak. A friend recently sent me a vape you can put weed into so I wanna fire that up and get stuck into the listening party tonight, even if it means waiting until 2AM :undecided:

Just got an email from spotify for the Deluxe Vinyl bundle with the autograph pic included (while supplies last) I purchased it immediately so hoping I get it, the autograph picture is also not yet crossed out like it was the other day.
I dont even have a record player but figured i'd frame the record and hang it like some other records I have.

Jim's comments:

Spinning My Wheels
"I go on walks with my phone on shuffle, and it played 'Spinning My Wheels.' I listened to it and I was like, 'Whoa, we've got this whole other album that, to me, feels very reflective.' It's funny because we're working on another new record—a new My Morning Jacket record—but with the pandemic and everything, it'll be a little while before we finish that and get all that stuff done."

Still Thinkin
"I feel like there's always this period—at least for me—when I'm going through a relationship falling apart, that I keep thinking that I can make it work. I think we've all experienced that. If there's something that can't be fixed, but you haven't accepted that yet and you keep trying to fix it. You're trying everything because you don't want to lose it. But you kind of have to lose it, because that's what will be best for both of you—but you don't realize it. 'Still Thinkin' was caught up in that emotion and caught up in the fog of that. Ultimately, once it was gone and I was looking back on it and writing that song, it's like that feeling of being a lone soul hanging off the edge of the world. I feel like so many nights during this pandemic—and I know I'm not alone—but you feel so alone because you're kept at home. And you're like, all right, I'm at home again for the 800th night in a row. What do I do tonight? And I think a thing that's difficult that a lot of people have said that I really appreciate is trying to not be hard on ourselves, trying to remember we don't have to write the next great American novel. We don't have to paint an amazing painting every night. Some nights we're just going to be sad and that's okay, because it's a difficult time."

Climbing the Ladder
"One thing that I've gotten sometimes when I talk to people about my sadnesses or my failures in love or personal life, people won't validate them or they'll say back to me, 'Oh, but your career's going so good.' And it's not like I'm not happy about those times, because we have so many levels in our life. We have so many different ways we are. There's the us that focuses on our career. There's the us that focuses on our family. There's the us that focuses on our hobbies, whatever. So that song I just kind of wrote about how I'm climbing the ladder and I'm paying my dues in this career way. But really at the end of the day—not that I don't value that or appreciate that—what I really want is sustainable love in my life and to create a sustainable relationship and a family and that kind of stuff, which I haven't been able to do."

Feel You
"That song was so weird, because I wrote the main riff in Kentucky before we went to Stinson Beach, but there weren't all of the instrumental parts and there weren't all of the other parts that happened. We went to Muir Woods several times while we were in Stinson Beach, and Muir Woods really gave me that song. I feel like being in those woods, the parts would come, because that's something that happens for me a lot. I walk and it generates music, but I feel like where I am contributes to that music. That song—a lot of the instrumentation and a lot of the ending and a lot of the space in the song—I feel like really was downloaded from the trees."

Beautiful Love (Wasn't Enough
"I wanted the song to have kind of a lighter vibe—not goofy, but just more of a resonant vibe that wasn't necessarily sad even though the song is kind of sad. I'm just really trying to look at myself and figure out why things didn't work out. I've had these moments where I'm like, 'If I wrote down everything I wanted on paper, it was all there in this relationship. But for some intangible reason that I couldn't figure out, it just didn't work.' And I was wondering about that in the song. Why wasn't it enough? Everything was there, but for some reason that I still don't understand, it wasn't enough. And I'm trying to figure that out for myself. What is it in me?"

Magic Bullet
"God, I don't even know where to start. I mean, it's so sad to me that as I sit here and try to remember which shooting it was that inspired me to write that song and I can't even remember. There's been so many of them. The whole gun thing just makes me so sad, because guns disgust me and guns are made to kill people and that is so profoundly messed up. The whole right to bear arms and the right to carry guns and stuff: It's like, when the Constitution was written, they had muskets. So if you want to get literal about the Constitution, then give everybody a musket or give everybody a single-shooter rifle or whatever, and be like, 'Okay. Here's your guns. You got them.'"

Run It
"It's Stinson Beach. I kept thinking about just wanting to get back to water. And I feel like most humans, we all love going to the water. We love going to the lake or to the beach, whatever it is, the swimming pool, we all have this desire. We're made of water. At times, I feel so overwhelmed by life and I feel like I don't fit in to the human experience that I just want to turn back into water and go back into the ocean and start again. Maybe wash back up on shore, go through the whole thing again, because I don't know, sometimes it just doesn't make sense to me. That's where that song came from."

Wasted
"I feel like there's two ways to waste time. In 'Feel You' I reference what I consider to be the good way to waste time: to just take time, to do nothing basically, to experience the forest or experience the ocean, because I feel like we're all constantly trying to do things and trying to fill our time with activities and keep it moving. But I think we forget to just take time to just not do anything, but then there's the other kind of wasting time where I feel like if you start to do too much and you get stagnant and you get complacent and you don't realize what you have, you can waste a lot of time. You can waste a lot of opportunities, and 'Wasted' was just me thinking about that for myself and other people I know. When I feel like, 'Oh god, I've been sitting here in this stagnant place,' whatever it is, whether it's my misery or various injuries I've had that I've had to recover from, that require you to be in this time-wasting place, try and create that motion again. 'Wasted' was the instrumental nature of it, the whole middle section, and I was just trying to create that momentum, and that was all one of our favorite tracks, such a fun track to record and play. I feel like the first part of the song is we're trying to break up the energy, and then the instrumental part sends it out, shooting it out, once you've broken it up."

Welcome Home
"This was a rumination on family, and I have such a wonderful family—not only a blood family, but my friends that have become family—and sometimes I get so lost in the end of a romance or the failure of a romantic relationship that I can spin out and almost forget there's anybody else on earth. When I wrote 'Welcome Home,' it was a time after I came home to Kentucky and just had some beautiful hangs with my family and with my friends. It's just a reminder to myself that there are these people that love me, that do welcome me home, no matter what my personal or relationship life may be going through, and to not forget them in those times of need, but remember them and call on them, because they've always been there for me."

The First Time
"Another one I wrote walking down the beach. That's a thing I think about a lot, that I struggle with. I almost feel like sometimes I haven't unlocked the key yet. Some people have, but I feel like we get almost penalized in relationships, that everybody always says there's the magic there at the beginning and everything is so amazing, and then slowly the magic fades away. You can keep creating that beginner's mind—that freshness that brought you together in the first place—but still grow. Can we make this feel as special as it did back when we met and things were electric and things were on fire and we were everything to each other? I haven't been able to sustain that. Somehow that always fades away, and I wish it was engineered the other way, where you got more and more rewarded for staying in the relationship—it just got hotter and hotter and more and more amazing. I know some people do make that happen, but I think it takes a lot of work, obviously, doing the work for yourself and have your partner do the work."

I'm digging it so far.  Not as cohesive as WF1 but it has higher highs.  Can't wait to take WF1, WF1 deluxe tracks, and WF2 to make "the waterfall.  The whole bloody affair."

I caved and ended up listening on Spotify.

This album is a totally different beast to Part 1. Aside from Wasted there's nothing as energetic and vibrant as songs like In Its Infancy or Spring. It's way more calm. Feel You is my favourite by miles, followed by Wasted. There's nothing I really dislike but I definitely need to spend more time with it. Waterfall I is the 'pop' side and Waterfall II is the experimental/mid tempo//jam side.

Spinning My Wheels - reminds me a bit of the live version of Only Memories Remain which if I remember rightly is a bit more 'spacey' and loose sounding. A lovely slow burning start to the album.

Still Thinkin - Very Beach Boys sounding. The ending is beautiful. S a x!

Climbing The Ladder - Slight Ska vibes? Like a bouncy cousin to stuff like Off The Record and What A Wonderful Man. I love the way it slows down and speeds up again, a nice touch.

Feel You - Fell in love with this one INSTANTLY. As I said above, my favourite track so far. Jim's vocals are stunning. Like Spinning it reminds me of Only Memories live. Dreamy and spacey. 'Come to bed' music.

Beautiful Love - This one didn't grab me all that much but I don't dislike it. Slight Into The Woods vibes. Is that a Jim + Carl harmony I hear towards the end? That definitely saved it for me!

Magic Bullet - Been a while since I listened to this but I think it sounds a bit beefier?

Run It - It's a nice song. Another mellow one. Also saved by the vocal harmonies.

Wasted - Whoa. There's a lot going on here. It's definitely going to be a beast live, especially if they play around with it a bit. Can totally imagine them going to town on this one and turning it into a 10+ minute jam.

Welcome Home - A nice song. I'd somehow totally missed this so it's actually new to me.

The First Time - I could be wrong here as I haven't listened to this in a while but there may have been more... stuff added to the ending of the song? I like it very much. Another one that brings the Only Memories vibes.

To summarise - not as instant as Waterfall 1 but I think she's gonna be a grower! It's just not what I expected and as I said. It's gonna need more time but it's still a total breath of fresh air in these weird times we live in.

Just did the listening party album is a solid 6/10 for me.
First half with the exception of feel you kind of sounds like uniform distortion outtakes.
Second half is much stronger and finally gets some classic jacket vibes.

It's definitely experimental and I'm sure it'll grow on me but with first listen I think it's probably my least favorite album they've put out.

Key tracks: Feel you, wasted, run it, and magic bullet.

I kind of wish magic bullet was never released because it would have hit much harder hearing it for the first time tonight, in a way it kind of safely saved the album for me considering I've heard the song 100 times now.

I finally figured something out! I have this poster (Cleveland 2016) framed and hung in my bathroom and always wondered where the phrases came from. Was going to email Clinton Reno about it, but never got around to it. Now I know, lyrics from The First Time.

Run It might sneakily be the best song on the album?!

I love Feel You and Wasted, but those melodic Run It grooves are what I keep hummin!

That was exactly what I needed.  I felt like you could definitely hear how Jim's mindset progressed from what we heard on Waterfall 1 into the Uniform Distortion/Clarity period.  It definitely didn't seem as fluid as WF1 but I didn't hear any Bad Decisions either (pun intended - sorry Big Decisions fans).

I liked the new mix in magic bullet and wasted can be a monster.  I think a lot of the other songs will grow on me on a second listen.  I was a little distracted tonight so every song didn't get my full attention.

On first listen, the more reflective (and somewhat darker) side of The Waterfall. Most welcome in these strangest of times- a bright spot in this musically bleak summer. I can imagine Wasted and Magic Bullet becoming live staples on the next tour, which I can't wait for.

I'm all about it. Definitely goes some new directions in the first half with Still Thinkin', Climbin' the Ladder, and Beautiful Love, but I think I'll grow with those tracks. The back half of the record is stellar-Wasted might become my favorite Post-Z track. So much energy and with the horns, it really recalls those It Still Moves days. Real excited to keep digging into it.

1. Spinning My Wheels - Classic, passionate JJ lyrics and melodies. Almost sounds like the ending of Master's Voice. The relevance of the song meaning in today's terms shows how an artist can be write for future without trying. Glad this song motivated JJ to release WII and I see it coming after a Circuital opener.

2. Still Thinkin - I love this song. Beach Boys/Beatles type melodies and drums. The instruments really compliment his voice and I was hoping there would be some newer pedal steel songs that jammed. I'd love for this to come after The Bear or Rollin Back. The second part of this song could be like a No Quarter jam if the audience is accepting. A lot of live potential with Preservation Hall Jazz Band. I hope they segue this into Only Memories or IWSYS. Love the riffs/sax/pedal steel in the end.

3. Climbing The Ladder - I feel like this would be on the radio and not a heavy rocking jam that we are used to. I think halfway through the song when it slowed and picked up with the little guitar solo gives hope this will be a fun song live. Maybe people are sleeping on this one, but it's probably the last song from WII people will want on the setlist.

4. Feel You - One of my new favorites. The lyrics, music arrangement, and pace of the song feels like a power ballad. It's a lost 70s soul jam that you'd find in the unwanted 45s section of a record store, blown away to discover it and nobody else knows that epicness of what you found. Maybe this fits in between Touch Me Pt 1 + 2?

5. Beautiful Love (Wasn't Enough) - Interesting song. I'm not super blown away on the first go around, but I want to read the lyrics and decipher the meaning more. Time will tell where this fits in for MMJ's discography.

6. Magic Bullet - Come on? You know this song is definitely what you want to show your friend who is on the fence for coming to his/her first MMJ show. Loved seeing it live at Red Rocks and want it earlier in the setlist because it is head-banging.

7. Run It - We gotta get back to water man. Ya'll know everybody's gonna have a group singalong when we finally get back. I'm blown away by how he took the band in this direction. Maybe live it'll fit in In Its Infancy > Run It > Like a River?

8. Wasted - I really wanna hear this live with a backup choir like JJ's solo shows. Lights flashing everywhere when Jim's wailing on the guitar and Carl all of a sudden pulls out a sax? Taking the band to new heights, jamming finally like En La Ceremony. Maybe we'll get this with energy like the new I Think I'm Going to Hell or It's About Twilight Now?

9. Welcome Home - I should have known this song a long time ago. Happy I didn't because it makes this track so much better now. An MMJ album without an acoustic song is like 4th of July without a cold one. Something soothing that can slow the set down before picking us back up for another rollercoaster.

10. The First Time - Can't believe I was sleeping on this song for so long. Maybe songs like this aren't for everybody, but if you know the MMJ catalogue, you can't get enough of production like this. Jim's vocals and lyrics are super powerful and the guitars mix super well. Glad it's the closer for the album. If this song fits snug into the setlist after Steam Engine, I'd be super happy.

---  :drum:  ---

Can't believe they kept these locked up for so long. Took a pandemic to let them out... Now we'll be spoiled with an inevitable new album and probably some more solo stuff. Glad I got to see them play all their older material before the new era of Jacket, but it's best for everybody to just accept they are transcending and finally releasing some badass, new shit.  :headphones:

Giving it a second listen this morning. Really good stuff. Always taking chances and keeping it fresh even when it's 5 years old. Jacket does it again. And the live potential on a bunch of these tunes is obvious. Welcome Home has been a fav for years. What a beautiful recording of that tune. Popping the headphones on for this one is a must. Thank you boys, we really needed this one!

so, as you may recall, I was not exactly getting my hopes up for this one. I guess I wasn't excited to hear "b-sides". BUT, these are clearly NOT "b-sides". IMO, the only connection to The Waterfall is that they were recorded during those sessions or at least came out of those sessions. This album stands all on its own and demonstrates how much range they have from "modern honky-tonk" to 60s pop to heavy rock jams along with a song like Run It? Come on, who is pulling that off these days?

What would be your 'perfect' Waterfall album if you can just take 10 tracks from both albums. Only needed one listen to #2 to know my album:
1. Believe
2.In it's Infancy
3. Get the point
4. Spring
5. Tropics
6. Feel You
7. Magic Bullet
8. Run it
9. Wasted
10. Welcome Home

Still Thinkin/The first time/only memories remain were all in the running for the 10 spot.

I think I like more songs on #2, but I LOVE more songs on #1 (if that makes sense).

I seem to be in a minority in this fanbase in that I actually really love The Waterfall 1. I only really dislike Thin Line (middle-8 aside) and Big D but the rest sit amongst my favourite Jacket songs. In Its Infancy is a top 10 track for sure, not that I've ever attempted a top 10 for MMJ! I just love how bright and synth-y a lot of it is.

Waterfall II is as I hoped growing on me rapidly. The sun is shining today and it's proving to be the perfect backdrop. Was a bit washed out last night so didn't end up giving it the 420 test. That comes tonight. Feel like this record will open right up with a little help from some Mary J!

Very much interested in merging the two volumes together and playing around with the running order at some point too!

EDIT: can confirm that In Its Infancy > Feel You is a s*** hot combo!

I'm definitely in the WFII > WFI camp, this just feels like the kind of MMJ that was missing for me on Circuital and WF.

I do have to ask, why do Compound Fracture and Big D get such consistent hate (here and elsewhere)? Those are two of my favorites on WF1.

Compound Fracture gets hate...???  That's always been one of my absolute favorites from Waterfall straight from the first time I heard it.  The only criticism I have of the song is that the live arrangement is much better and feels less synthetic - but honestly what MMJ song isn't better live???  Album version is still great.

We watched the YouTube fun live and loved the songs.  But I have to say I was totally blown away by the video which I felt had an old school MTV feel.  I love Marin County and California in general and it was just plain awesome to see the visuals of our boys frolicking in one of my favorite places in the world, and it brought a whole new insight into these records with visuals that will stick with me every time I hear the songs.

Looking forward to what the future holds!

Nice observation about the MTV video feel.  Love that area too, lived there 12 years.  You can 'feel' Marin and Stinson Beach influences in much of WII, even more than Waterfall.

IMO this is could be another gateway album for them. Have a feeling lots of folks not familiar with Jacket, if they get the chance to hear it, will be drawn in.  More accessible than earlier albums, but in a great complicated, inventive Jacket way. Gets better every play. If MTV was still here, they would be all over it ;-)

I'm replaying the YT video while still up.  Funny stuff in the comments - some guy is arguing with Tucker Martine about the dateline of the songs, and telling Martine he's wrong.  Lol

Love it- super soulful, awesome piano, kind of reminds me of a vintage 70s feel good summer classic. Bill withers meets the band type song.
Also gives me some Dead vibes think Mississippi half step

I love the piano in the middle of the song.  The chorus portion at the end just goes too long IMO.  I also think that my perception of the song is skewed because I thought he was saying "get back Kotter" for the last few days of listening.  Thought this was a song about the 1970s classic sitcom "Welcome Back Kotter."

I think he does throw in some "get back Kotter"s in there...anyways this is my favorite on the album.  The groove, the harmonies, the lyrics, and the general flow of the song make this top notch for me.

This is pretty much exactly my take.  I wasn't blown away during the initial listen but now I would say the album is probably a 9 out of 10, possibly 9.5.  I love "Spinning My Wheels" but I do think there is a very slight dip in quality with the next two tracks, but things pick right back up again with "Feel You" and never let up.

OK. I've now listened to this 6-7 times through, including on some edibles last night. People, this album is absolutely incredible. Just a perfect showcase of their range and expertise as musicians, start-to-finish. I don't have the eloquence to describe why I like each track so much, but they all hit me in different ways and they all sound amazing. So happy this popped into my life.

Love it- super soulful, awesome piano, kind of reminds me of a vintage 70s feel good summer classic. Bill withers meets the band type song.
Also gives me some Dead vibes think Mississippi half step

The piano definitely saved it for me. I'm really not a huge fan of stripped back/acoustic/songwriter stuff like this but it's a nice song. It has a nice vibe and I think would work very well smack bang in the middle of a high energy live show. My first thought was FILLER but it's grown on me a lot.

I also gave it the 420 test last night and can confirm the album absolutely opened up for me. Magic Bullet and Wasted are two phenomenal slices of stoner rock. And of course Feel You - already a huge song but I was close to tears listening to it high. The ending to Still Thinkin is also magnificent but I'm not 100% sold on the song itself yet.

Couple of days in and I'm gonna have to admit there's not a single song that I really dislike on this one. It's a start to finish record for me, definitely.

Think I'm on my 8th listen (still up, surprisingly).  Nodding my head at both of your takes. Spinning, then Feel You (in an earlier FM/MTV radio time, would become a monster hit) to the end is just a perfect run of songs, one of those that both deep fans and first time listeners can get hooked by and appreciate. But I like Still Thinking and Climbing too, actually sent the Still Thinking link to a couple of non-fan friends knowing that 60's BB/Beatles vibe would appeal on first listen.

For me anyway, that's what differentiates WII from Waterfall. Both are really good in their own ways.  This is an album of ten mostly traditional structured songs that flow well together, infused with great rock riffs layered over and between gorgeous melodies and pop hooks. A number of Waterfall songs (Infancy, Spring, Tropics) sound more experimental, great in their own way, but quite different than say Big D or Thin Line.  Hillside Song, which I love, would fit well on this album.  Good companion to Welcome Home.

If you literally add Spring and Tropics and make this a 12 song LP...It would be close to perfection!

I still havent had a chance to blast it yet but what a nice surprise

Just beautiful

I did a random mix today with both waterfall and the b-sides. It reminded me how good Waterfall 1 is.

this one is different. I think it may be better. Cant say that yet though. Just feels instantly classic

Not suggesting anything unsavory but you do know you can do a 1 month trial of YouTube Premium for free if you cancel within that first month? This way there aren't any advertisements. And if you have a Windows 10 PC around you can record your screen image using the windows key plus G plus R using the Game App feature?

I've heard it generates a video capture of about 2.5GB that can be burned onto a DVD for posterity or saved on a flash drive.
Well that's what I heard...

okay now that I got that nice post out of the way, I can be critical. All in all, I'm loving the album, but theres a few clunkers IMO. (Namely Magic Bullet and the First Time)

Every other song is pretty dang good. TBH I was very nervous about this album. Circuital is... not for me. All of the JJ solo catalogue is also not for me (ROLSOG has a couple tracks I like a lot.) BUT, now that there have been 2 albums I like a lot since Circuital, I am re-convinced that Circuital was just a fluke, and they are still making the best shit out there.

I'll throw my $.02 in here after listening all weekend.
I missed the Thursday listening party but waited all day friday until after work to throw on the video and watched/listened, initial reaction was goosebumps and loved it.

Seen a couple people say they don't care for Climbin the Ladder, i can see that as it seems a little hokey/comical almost, but i think that's the genius of the song, it's obviously about Jim's climbin the career ladder in music industry, but it starts out with that pedal steel guitar and an overly country riff that i feel is a throwback/homage to their southern country rock roots. Also love the tempo change in the middle of Jim getting tired of climbing, then it picks back up again, it's a pretty genius song in my opinion.

Run It - has been what i keep singing in my head and going back to, definitely feel the Grateful Dead vibes, i love this song, possibly my #1 on the album

Wasted - obviously a monster, might be the best jam they've ever recorded on a STUDIO record right? up there with OBH and Mageetah and Dancefloors

when i first heard the album, Climbing The Ladder and Still Thinking weren't that high on my list, but after several plays this weekend, I'm a fan of each of them as well. I think being sandwiched b/t Spinning My Wheels (what a great opening track) and Feel You is tough. The tempo changes, the "Jacket" flourishes make them homages and not rip offs of the genres they clearly pull from.

So many of the above posts are thoughts that I've had.  I love this forum and conversation.

I can officially say that Wasted and Feel You are now in my top tier MMJ all time favorite songs.  To hear those live is a dream.

Run It is getting a lot of love - probably especially among Dead fans.

What a way to close the album..... I can listen to "I wonder where the time went" with those guitars for hours.

Beautiful Love (Wasn't Enough)

Overall I'm in love with this album and I have it on constantly.  Too early to rank among their other albums, but i have a feeling I'll slot it pretty high.

"Beautiful Love (Wasn't Enough)" i find to be the weakest track, but many listens in and it's certainly not a bad track.  "Climbing the Ladder" and "Still Thinkin" i love, just not quite as much love as the other tracks.  They also don't seem to flow very well in the album and stick out like sore thumbs.  As much as i love the poppy beach boys/beatles vibes/nod to "Still Thinkin", it's the end of that track that i LOVE.

"Feel You" and "Wasted" are easy stand-outs from the new tracks and i think rival the best MMJ has to offer. I cannot wait to hear these things live and see how they evolve over time.

"The First Time" and "Run It" seem mixed with fans, but i also love these a LOT.  The First Time is an excellent closer for this album, i get so lost in "Oh i wondered where the time went..." and i find it stuck in my head long after the album finishes.  Run It's "get back to water" and overall groove just really hooks me in.

"Spinning My Wheels" I've heard mixed with fans as well, but i think it's a great opener and i really dig the chorus.  Lots of little subtle instrumentation and build-up in this one I've dug into more on repeat listens.

Lastly the previously released tracks of "Magic Bullet" and "Welcome Home" i think are fantastic, not much else to say.  GET OUT OF HERE COVID, WE NEED TO HEAR THIS THING LIVE, STAT!

I got into this band in 2010 and fell in love with their entire back catalogue at that point. Evil Urges was actually the first album of theirs I listened to and it hooked me. Then Circuital came out and really underwhelmed me. The Waterfall was a bit of a step in the right direction, but it still didn't hit me like anything pre-Circuital.

But The Waterfall II feels like the album I've been waiting for for 10 years. It immediately hooked me in ways Circuital and WF didn't. I can't believe they've been sitting on these songs for 5+ years.

listened enough times now to form an opinion.  as if anyone should care.

overall, about what i expected, maybe a bit lacking on rock 'n roll, but plenty of harmless, enjoyable tunes.  nothing mind-bending or earth-shattering.

the lifelong prince fan in me has always loved magic bullet, still my favorite on this album.  run it is great, impossible to not like feel you. still thinking and beautiful love have a nice 60's pop feel.

the rest are ok, somewhat forgettable imho.

and i just don't feel the love for wasted.  i agree that the 4 minute jam at the end is really fantastic, but the first two minutes of that song are painful to my ears. sounds like a spinal tap parody song.  seems it will go down with victory dance as songs i just don't get.  both are better than outta my system, though.  freakin' hate that song.

1. Z
2. Tennessee Fire (hearing it played by this lineup at OBH4 was a religious experience)
3. It Still Moves
4. At Dawn
5. Evil Urges
6. Waterfall 1
7. Waterfall 2
8. Circuital

After 5 listens, here's my unsolicited thoughts on the new album from someone who has seen them live about 50 times since 2008:

The first time through reminded me of listening to Regions of Light for the first time.. Some of the songs are so off brand for Jim/MMJ it just made me recoil.. but my expectations were a LOT lower for this than they were for Regions at the time, so it was easy to just accept what they are doing and take the good.

Spinning My Wheels: I really like this one. What an interesting choice for an opener!  That slow building dread in the background contrasted by his delicate, angelic singing, it's like taking a ride on a cloud with Jim while you glide over a post apocalyptic landscape.  I keep forgetting that the album was made before Eternally Even and I want to say it sounds influenced by that album.  Instead it's a foreshadowing of what would come.

Still Thinkin:  The first time I heard this song I just started laughing.. I couldn't believe they put it on an album.  Not that I didn't' like it.. It was just so different from anything else they've done that it threw me off.  As someone who found the band after 2008, I felt like I may have finally understood the shock that older fans must have had upon hearing Highly Suspicious for the first time.  All that aside, I have come to love this song very quickly and I really hope they go down this road again.  Jim's voice is just too perfect for that genre not to go back to it.  That said, I found the jam/outro of this song to be generic and boring, and the transition between the two segments a bit too sudden, maybe not very well thought out.  This is a recurring theme for me on the album, actually.  On one hand it's cool that there are these moments that sound as if you are watching them on a stage.  The jams feel way less scripted than in past albums.   But the downside of that is that it often feels uninspired, repetitive, and doesn't really go anywhere.  In the live setting this is fine, you appreciate a deviation from the album and in the midst of a 2.5 hour set it's nice to have a breather in the form of a noodly sound collage.   I just prefer the model of making it tight on the record and expanding in the live realm.

Climbing the Ladder:  I have nothing nice to say about that opening (and recurring) guitar riff.  I just can't stand it and I hope if they play this song live they find a way to make it sound less like some kind of synthetic, computer generated cartoon music.  The rest of the song isn't terrible.  I can live with it.  I just hope and pray that this isn't one of those bad MMJ songs that the band for some reason can't stop playing live (Out of My System, First Light... most of Circuital, really)

Feel You:  This is the obvious winner on the album.  If you've heard the song then I'm not sure what I can add to it.  Just a very beautiful piece.  Side Note: it's been said that it sounds a bit like Breathe by Pink Floyd, which is true, but parts of it are also curiously similar to a song called Captured by Gov't Mule (which Jim did guest vocals on for an alternate version of the song).  Obviously they would never aim to rip anyone off but there may have been some bleed through on this one.

Beautiful Love (Wasn't Enough):  It's so short for a Jacket song that I don't know how seriously to take it, but I enjoy it.  This is now the second song (Still Thinkin) that feels incomplete but instead of getting an outro jam they just end it after a short little guitar solo.  They said that this album wasn't a collection of B-sides, but I'm starting to feel like a few of these songs were probably bound to be B-sides but instead became filler.  In the past, I think Jim would have held on to these song segments until he had a better resolution for them.  But if you have 6 or 7 really solid songs that are 5 years old and probably can't be released alongside anything else, this move makes sense.

Magic Bullet:  I appreciate the sentiment and the sense of duty behind this song.  I actually really enjoyed it live at Red Rocks.  I cannot stand this song on the album.  It's an instant skip for me every time.  The beat is very rigid and predictable.  Things never really transform, they just layer on new sounds as they go.  It's like I'm listening to some kid's first attempt at using fruity loops.  I've said all the nice things I can say about this song and ill end it there.

Run It:  It's growing on me but I still feel like the chorus goes on about 2-4 times too long.  Still, I feel like it will be pretty good live.  There's just a lot of potential there for the insertion of some really unique jamming and/or some really weird Jim moments.  Staying tuned on the evolution of this one.

Wasted:  Another obvious winner.  Really not much to say about it other than it should destroy live.

Welcome Home:  2012, one of the nights of the Port Chester 3 night run, I was walking outside of the venue by the tour bus and heard them doing sound check.  Put my ear closer to the door and heard a song I had never heard before.  Assumed it was a cover.  Later that night we got that song, which turned out to be "Welcome Home."  Since then it's been one of my favorites, especially during the holidays.  I'm excited that it's finally got a place on a Jacket LP but I don't know that it feels like a good fit.  I guess that's one complaint I have about the album in general is that it doesn't feel like a cohesive grouping where the sum is greater than the parts.  It just feels like parts.  That's one area where Waterfall 1 (and really every other Jacket album) just blows this album away.  That, as well as some of my prior complaints, could all be the result of a different finishing process (perhaps rushed, which sounds funny given the time between releases.. perhaps just in absence of a production team, I have no idea).
But back to the song.. Love it.  Jim could make songs like this forever if he wanted to.

The First Time:  Didn't like this song when I first heard it long ago but it's really grown on me.  A very peaceful and fitting way to wrap things up.  We came in dreaming but full of anxiety, we leave, still dreaming but now accepting, and feeling that corresponding sense of bliss.

The album exceeds my low expectations but ultimately it will be judged the way all Jacket albums should be judged: by their impact on the live realm.  How will these songs transfer to the stage?  Which ones will become staples and which ones will fade?  I really can't stand Circuital for the most part but it gave us Slow Slow Tune and Victory Dance, so it has a place.  In the extremely vivid painting that is a Jacket show, this album gives the band some softer, dreamier colors to play around with for contrast and that alone is exciting.

Confused at all the Circuital hate. I always felt it was a much more refined continuation of Evil Urges which was/is much too loud and jarring in most places for me, production wise (I do think Thank You Too is incredibly underrated though). Listen to those two records back to back and Circuital is like a breath of fresh air

Different strokes, but for me Evil Urges was my first Jacket exposure and I really loved it.

Circuital, i dont know what it is, but i feel annoyed by most of the songs on a molecular level.  Then again i'm actually one of the few who really like The Day is Coming so..

I love Circuital.  I feel like the songs get up and run and live I've enjoyed each and every one of them- some more than others at different times.  I guess it just came at a time I really needed it and I love it for the tangled up memories as well as its musicality..

I'm with you on wasted, the jam at the end more then makes up for the song itself. The first two minutes are pretty bad, the last four are a 10.
Really hope this song gets the run thru treatment if and when played live.

How are the first four minutes bad?  They are slightly repetitive, but I think it is perfect for setting up the eventual jam.  The "whoa oa oa oahhh" coming in and out is cool and eventually triples to present the piano solo into guitars.  There is nothing bad about the song.

It's a good album but on the lower end of the spectrum for me.
My order is:
Evil Urges
It still Moves
Z
At Dawn
Waterfall 1
Waterfall 2
Circuital
Tennessee Fire

I'd say the Waterfall through Circuital bucket are an absolute tie and can be interchangeable on any given day. Same with Z & At Dawn. I have no problem sitting down and listening to any of these albums any day of the week.
Evil Urges is my clear cut # 1 and TF is the only album I genuinely can't listen to. The songs on TF sound great live, but as a studio recording it bores me to death.

I think musically they evolved and as an album would put TTF right under Z, At Dawn, It Still Moves

To think that a couple punk 21 year old kids can put this out as a first album, still amazes me!

Again songs sound great live, but as a studio recording it is mediocre at best. It's amazing how the band has progressed and listening to their evolution is nothing short of amazing.. but I kind of compare it to Pink Floyd. Whoever would put The Piper at the Gates of Dawn ahead of Darkside, The Wall, Wish you were here or Animals is delusional. Piper could have been recorded by any band, it's the later albums that make them special.

I feel the same way about Tennessee, it's a basic album that could have been released by a ton of average bands - the evolution through the years is our MMJ today.

Not trying to be confrontational but it's how I've always felt about this band and especially that record.

I get your point and I don't walk around saying Please Please Me is the best Beatles album. And I'm not saying I think TTF is my favorite Jacket album either.
I love this band and love the risks they take and how they change it up and try to be different on every album.

Everyone has their own opinion and the fan base has grown over their 21 years of playing and have picked up new fans with every record, like they are supposed to do.

Just in "my" opinion, there are songs I like and love and crush live on the newer records... but as a whole entire collection of songs from start to finish? There is no way I can put The Waterfall I or II, Circuital or Evil Urges above TTF.
Again one mans opinion.

I love Spring and Tropics, and against the majority on here, Big Decisions too. But I only like the rest of the Waterfall

I love Victory Dance, Circuital, and Slow Slow Tune, and I envy what they tried to do with the Muppets stuff, but again as an entire album? Not a favorite of mine

I love most of Evil Urges and can't say enough good things about this album, I just place it under TTF

I am really really enjoying Waterfall II right now and only time will tell where it falls for me.

But after 16 years of listening to This band... I still listen, throw on TTF in it entirety. I can not say that for Waterfall, Circuital, or Even Evil Urges.

TTF comes last for me too, sorry guys.

It's all down to the production. Much prefer listening to live recordings of the songs from recent years. 'They Ran' is in my top 10 Jacket songs but I can't listen to the album version. My go to is the version from the Las Vegas Live EP. I loved listening to the recording of the anniversary show they played last year though.

My rank is

1 It Still Moves (2016 remaster which absolutely blows the album wide open!)
2 The Waterfall I / II (Gonna count them as one for now, too early to tell where II will land yet but I earns it place due to nostalgia, I was a very new fan when Circuital came out but WF was my first album by them as a real fan and the first time I saw them live so it's special to me! Plus I don't care what anyone says, In Its Infancy is top tier MMJ)
3 Z
4 Circuital
5 At Dawn (Again - love the songs but prefer what they've become live over the years and much prefer listening to live recordings. There are several HQ recordings of Phone that have replaced the studio version in my mind)
6 Evil Urges
7 The Tennessee Fire

There is not an album on the list I think is a total write off though. TTF only comes bottom because of what I've already mentioned and Evil Urges because it's a bit silly for me in places and some of the rock songs feel a bit forced and uninspired (what the hell is Highly Suspicious? Come on) but I still love Smokin', the Touch Mes, Thank You, Sec Walkin, and also I'm Amazed/Evil Urges if I'm in the right mood. It would have made a great EP that's for sure!

All valid points, as they say.. different strokes for different folks.

At this stage of my life there are very few albums I can listen straight through without skipping a track or two, especially albums i've heard 10,000 times.
Trying to think of a list off the top of my head, and not counting live releases

1) darkside of the moon
2) Pearl Jam- Ten
3) Damian Rice - O - I realize this is an outlier to my list
4) AIC - Dirt (even this might be pushing it a bit)
Most radiohead albums - but thats more because they act as more ambient noise for me
and of course It still moves and Evil urges.. but even these albums have one or two tracks I can take or leave.

This is just off the top of my head, but honestly i'd be hard pressed to think of any others.

Obviously there are tons of live records I can easily listen from start to finish on repeat - Grateful Dead, DMB, Okonokos etc. but I am simply thinking of studio albums here

I can listen to Heartbreakin Man and The Bear but the rest I go with live versions. It is a solid set of songs. I don't think it would happen but I'd happily get in line for a re-recorded version. The same with some songs from At Dawn (mostly Phone as I just can't be bothered with the studio version when this also exists: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYtFwe858j8 )

Z is my favorite MMJ album, but even with that one I have always skipped "Into The Woods".

Tennessee Fire, At Dawn & It Still moves I don't skip any tracks.  They are all incredible front to back.

Evil Urges has a couple songs that I actively cannot stand, a couple songs that sound like weak filler to me, and then a handful of all-time greats.

I suppose this description kinda works for Circuital for me as well, although I feel like I enjoy Circuital a lot more than most people seem to.  Full disclosure though: I played around with the tracklist and made a playlist out of Circuital tracks, ditched a few, added a few tracks from that time period, and made a tweak to the running order of the songs.

I've struggled with The Waterfall ever since it came out five years ago.  There are songs that I loved right off the bat - like "Tropics (Erase Traces)" - but then there are several songs that I just do not connect with at all.  And then there were a couple songs that I could not enjoy until I heard them played live.  MMJ songs to me are always magical when played live and usually seem superior to their album counterparts if I'm being honest, but songs like "Compound Fracture" & "Only Memories Remain" have always felt to me like they are only about 80% done on the album and weren't really finished until played live.  Still though, I've probably listened to the Waterfall hundreds of times by now and have found much enjoyment out of it.

The Waterfall II clicked for me on play #2 and I love the entire album front-to-back.

You have to go with a tier system for this:

Tier 1: Crème de la crème

It Still Moves
Z
At Dawn

Three incredibly distinct albums, each representing the very best of what Jacket does across three different dimensions.  It Still Moves has to be number 1, though.  It's the lifeblood.  Sure, Z is an incredible production.  Yes, they did some things that no one saw coming and executed them to near perfection.  And Dondonte is about as good as it gets.  But the heart and soul of the band, to me, was born with It Still Moves.  They took all the raw emotion of At Dawn and heaped it into the fuel furnace of an electric guitar driven locomotive, blasting down the rails, sublimating pain, misery, and sadness into speed until everything just explodes into a beautiful rain of triumph and ecstasy.

Tier 2:  Uncut Gem

The Tennessee Fire

What were you doing around the age of 19?  Jim graduated high school and said, "I'm just going to write the following songs:"

Heartbreakin Man
They Ran
The Bear
Nashville to Kentucky
Old September Blues
If All Else Fails
It's about Twilight Now
Evelyn is Not Real
War Begun
Picture of You
I Will Be There When You Die
The Dark
By My Car
Butch Cassidy
I Think I'm Going to Hell

While the recording quality was far from ideal, and while none of these songs had been developed anywhere near their full potential (as we would later see in the live realm), it's a stunning collection of songs, especially for someone that young.  The recording quality and the fact that it's not a cohesive concept album like the others prevent it from being in the top tier but it's just as important to the future of the band as It Still Moves was.

Tier 3:  Pretty...Pretty...Pretty Good

Evil Urges:  An extremely well crafted album with lots of high points.
The Waterfall 2:  See lengthy review above
The Waterfall 1:  Still a fan of the album, haven't really gone back to it in a couple of years.  It's much more cohesive a grouping than Waterfall 2, and it is certainly more guitar driven, but i dont think it quite touches that transcendent space of pure bliss like W2 sometimes achieves.

Tier 4:  The Cheese Stands Alone

Circuital:  Im not going to trash an album that some of you, somehow, apparently like, so i'll just say this:  They made two songs that absolutely kill live (Victory Dance and Slow Slow Tune) and i'll always be thankful for that.  If I never hear the rest of the album again i'll be okay with that.

Like some others have already said, TTF might be the best collection of songs they've put together, but the studio versions are incredibly lacking (At Dawn has the same problem, to a lesser extent). It could be interesting if they did a full-album "cover" of TTF and re-recorded/re-imagined the songs with the current lineup.

It's vindicating to see I'm not alone in my distaste for Circuital. Circuital the song is the only real highlight for me, the rest teeters between boring (Victory Dance) and obnoxious (Holdin On To Black Metal). Although I will admit that First Light and Outta My System have grown on me live.

I seriously enjoy the variety of opinions and discussions all their albums bring to this forum.
It's crazy how the years have changed though. The first four albums would always lay on top in rearranging orders and then it was just everything else they have done.
I just never thought in a million years I would have to fight for the fact of The Tennessee Fire vs The Waterfall.
I value all opinions on music and to each their own has never made more sense.

For argument sake, I will play along...

1- Z = Love Love Love this album. Would easily be in my top favorites of all time, by any band. Love the mega balls they had to swing and hit a home run, especially after such a masterpiece that is ISM
2- At Dawn = today I'm feeling this as #2
3- ISM = tomorrow can easily by #2 depending on mood
4- TTF = solid 4 spot for me but still far away from going to #5
5- EU
6- W2 = still has potential to jump to #5
7- Circuital
8- W1 = clear bottom for me. Scares me that if I heard this album first, I'm not sure if I would have dove into their back catalog and found the countless amounts of other magic they have created.

These lists are always fun.  Its so subjective and a lot of it depends on what era you discovered the band.  I will buy anything they put out and have found something in every album that resonates with me as it seems that my life any perspective have grown with the band.  I will say at this point I really only go into each album hoping there are a few songs that can become live classics.

1. Okonokos - I know this doesn't really count but this album really encapsulates everything that we all love about the band.  It's also the album that made things click.  Everything that came before and since has really only clicked after hearing it in a live setting.

2. Z - This was the album out when I discovered them (via okonokos) and will probably always be number 1 as these were the songs that hooked me.

3. ISM - I don't have much new to add.  This is the album where MMJ became MMJ imo.

4. At Dawn - a perfect mix of the rawness onTTF with a glimpses of the focus we began to see with ISM.

5. TTF - I was never a huge fan of the production but everything clicked after I downloaded the one big holiday shows.  The live versions, especially with the talent of the current lineup, brought me the grownup versions of these songs and allowed me to appreciate the undeveloped artistry of a young Jim.

6/7 - WF 1 and 2.  I have a hard time separating the two and can't form a full opinion of 2 yet.  There are some songs that I don't care for (big decisions, believe, first time) but the themes really resonate with me. I also like magic bullet ok but something about it seems out of place.

8. EU - there are some live classics. The title track will always take me back to 2008 and bonnaroo specifically. I'm amazed has grown on me but the stretch between thank you too and remnants doesn't really do much for me.

9. Circuital -  VD is great.  Circuital, Slow Slow Tune, and Moving Away are good songs and black metal is fun but I really don't like the rest of the album.  It falls below EU bc I prefer the live staples of EU more.

Im definitely NOT doing this yet!!  :)

Way too early and takes away from my in the moment enjoyment and discussion of this incredible new album!  I am loving it!!!

Great stuff, top to bottom.  Current rankings subject to change!!

1. Feel You
2. Run it
3. Wasted
4. Still Thinkin
5. Magic Bullet
6. Climbing the Ladder
7. The First Time
8. Spinning My Wheels
9. Welcome Home
10. Beautiful Love (wasn't enough)

Really into the top nine on my list. The top four is fluid, as are spots five through nine. I mean, I absolutely ADORE spinning my wheels!! Beautiful Love still hasn't clicked for me.

I hope they release the rest of the Waterfall recordings some day. Although I doubt that will happen because I suspect some songs were used for various solo projects. Still, I'd like to hear the MMJ takes.

The live version of "Friends Again" from the 7" vinyl they put out and the song "Ready To Be Called On" from the Dallas Buyers Club soundtrack (???) both should have been on Circuital and would have made it a much stronger album.

I can't lie, I was bummed when the tracklist for Waterfall II was announced and there was no sign of "Throwback" on there.  Now that the album is out, I'd say Part II is great as is, but I still would love to get my hands on a full band MMJ version of "Throwback".

How Could I Know (Oxen) not on Z?

I think the only thing that could have made Circuital worse is if "Ready to Be Called On" were on it.  That's a bottom 3 Jacket song all time for me.  Big fan of Friends Again, though.  I wish they would bust that out live once in a while it's really perfect for a show.

Surprised this is the tune they decided to play, sounded really nice but far from my first choice of songs I wish they played.
Actually thought it was just the studio version recording until the ending. Clearly it was a different 'live' rendition

i also appreciate this song for how plainly personal Jim is on it. Honestly, the last 5 years of the band make more sense to me after listening to it.  It makes me appreciate this record even more and the fact we have a new record to look forward to (at some point). There was a joy to the Port Chester/Forest Hills shows last year that I had not seen in them in a few years and now it makes sense: Jim was beat up physically and emotionally. It seems as if he's put a lot of effort into healing himself and I hope that the next record reflects that as well.

Random thought/pointless post but every time I listen to Welcome Home it makes me think of the song Superheroes from The Rocky Horror Picture Show and how awesome it would be if WH had a similar ending to that with Jim + Carl wailing away together. I'm loving that one right now though, makes a perfect break surrounded by more lively MMJ songs. Had a run of Feel You > Welcome Home > The Bear > The Way That He Sings > Wasted > Rollin Back > Run Thru tonight and it was heaven!

Whoa. That's more like it! I was surprised, when I started this thread, that no one beat me to it.

I wrote this a few hours after the YouTube listening party, July 10-11.

Notes on The Waterfall II

My 1st listen was this morning in a dental office waiting room. The 2nd was the listening party tonight on MMJ's YouTube channel. The third, as I write this, is on my screened porch around midnight to 3am, very stoned. 🤪

I didn't listen to Carl... I got carried away.

Spinning My Wheels - great song, great lyrics, though I'd like to SEE the lyrics for clarity. Sounds great after the 3rd listen.

Still Thinkin - a blend of Beach Boys and Beatles that breaks new ground. A trippy outro that will slay live. Picture Red Rocks and disco ball... a hint of the 3-note progression Carl uses later on Feel You.

Climbing The Ladder - the opening pedal steel is a bit assaultive, at first. A fun song that settles down while keeping your toes tappin and your head boppin. The return to the cartoonish pedal steel midsong is pleasant, the blow softened. The drop and return in tempo at the 2/3 mark is purty cool.... OK. I like the silly pedal steel. A lot.

Feel You - a great showcase of Jim's vocal talent and range. Contains the riff from the teaser they released earlier in the week, which I LOVED. That 3-note progression put to work, reminiscent of the guitar work in The Waterfall. After 3 listens, I still wish the very ending was cleaner. Bo's intentional off-course piano work obscures a pleasant fade out.

Beautiful Love - I believe Jim is rocking an OM-84 Omnichord on this one, based in part on its presence in the visual part of tonight's listening party on YouTube. Love the Mr. Rogers intro. The raunchy guitar break will grow on stage, a monster waiting.

Magic Bullet - released as a single in 2016, its nice to have it in the context of this album. Its a groovy take on "salvation" from hate and violence.

Run It - I could see this as a Dead tune, with Jerry singing. That's high praise, on two levels. 😉

Wasted - its like a metal choir, led by Jim, everyone in robes behind the altar in church. Picture it... Carl, Bo, Tom, and Patrick off to the side, also wearing robes while playing. Then comes the break. The congregation grooves as the church darkens with flashing lights. Then Preservation Hall Jazz Band comes up the aisle from the back of the church. The lights in the church return to normal, as MMJ and PHJB take us home. Credit to Tracy for pointing out the Run Thru-like break. Also, kudos to Robb for predicting we'll get "end of Wasted" on setlists in the future. LOL

Welcome Home - originally released in late 2011 as part of the digital-only holiday iTunes Session EP. Recorded live in a studio in Europe, I'm not sure if this is a new recording from the Stinson Beach sessions. I've always loved this tune and think it would have made a better closer for the album. Great fingering in the opening notes. Its refreshing to hear this version (I'm now convinced this is a 2014-2015 recording) as not necessarily a holiday song. I love the balance of lead and backing vocals in the 2nd line of the 1st chorus - and, later, throughout - which also led me to believe this is a more recent version (I'll have to give the 2011 version a whirl after this... stay tuned). Another could-be Dead tune. The ending vocals further convince me this is a newer version, as Jim is more expressive in delivering the final line of the final chorus. The song feels like the band is welcoming us back to their music, even if it is with 5-9 year-old tunes.

The First Time - the Only Memories Remain and Slow Slow Tune of The Waterfall II. It should trade places with Welcome Home, a better closer IMHO. Originally appeared in the one-and-done Showtime series Roadies in 2016, which I happened to watch religiously, without expecting an appearance from Jim (episode 4 - https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4l066z (https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4l066z) and episode 10 - https://m.facebook.com/watch/?v=1269966896355066&_rdr (https://m.facebook.com/watch/?v=1269966896355066&_rdr)) or this song in its soundtrack.

-------

I played Welcome Home after The First Time and definitely think the album ends better with those two songs switched in order on the tracklist.

PS - I just went and listened to the 2011 version of Welcome Home (https://youtu.be/MArAOrEtkQs (https://youtu.be/MArAOrEtkQs)). They definitely re-recorded it in Stinson Beach.

I must say, The Waterfall was an attempt at excellence that overshot its target. The Waterfall II feels more organic, more genuine. I seem to be unable to dislike anything Jim James touches ('cept Sec Walkin) but I would place TWII far higher on my ranking of MMJ studio albums.

1. It Still Moves
2. Z (or At Dawn)
3. At Dawn (or Tennessee Fire)
4. Tennessee Fire (or Z)
5. The Waterfall II
6. Chocolate and Ice EP
7. Evil Urges
8. The Waterfall
9. Circuital
(always subject to change)

There's another new album, recorded and awaiting mastering. I was also told, some time ago, we should expect a live album "soon". More releases on nuggs coming, using a list of shows you all requested that Carl asked me to curate from Facebook and Forum posts.

Thanks for reading. Stay home, wear a mask in public, wash your hands or use hand sanitizer frequently. Listen to state and local health officials. Live to hear the next creation of My Morning Jacket to be released into the wild!

Love and peace. ❤☮

I have to say the albums grows to me after several listenings. Not the best work but also not the worst. I feel it is a very relaxed and slow record. So I am looking forward to hear live versions of the songs.

My place in an album ranking would be:

1. It still moves
2. Z
3. Evil Urges (first MMJ Album I bought after seeing Jim in "I am not there" and got in touch with the band/Jim for the first time and made me a fan- although Highly Suspicous really turned me off and is still a song I skip when I don´t play the Album on vinyl).
4. At Dawn
5. The Waterfall 1
6. The Waterfall 2

Quote from: johnnYYac on Jul 21, 2020, 11:58 PMWhoa.

Really great review YYac.   And I appreciate how you sprinkled in other trivia and news.  I also like everything that Jim touches, and when the rest of MMJ join him it goes to next level.  I was overdoing listening to Waterfall 2 and didn't want to get sick of it.  So I took a little break. I'm looking forward to your next post.

Geaux Johnny! A live album finally?? YES! We need one right now...especially all the madness going down. Glad you enjoyed The Waterfall II brother! hit me up on the DMs! love what your ambassadorship has supplied for the fanbase, thank you and also love your "Nuke Covid" footer too, let's all do our part and end this awful, hideous virus
but man oh man alive i can use anything Jacket. My computer with all the old Jacket stuff has aged out and taken everything with it but I'm using archive and getting some from Nugs to replace the lost recordings. It's so funny re-discovering it all, time and time again like "oh yeah I fucking love THIS version of Lay Low!"

Parts of Beautiful sound like a slower version to me. During the lyrics in Beautiful

"Why is my bitter heart so demanding?
So unforgiving of you?
Why can't I be more understanding?"

and in Evil Urges

"If its all the same we're tired of waiting come on then
And dedicate your love to any woman or man
No racial boundary lines, no social subdivisions-"

Its just a small part, but when I first heard Beautiful, this part reminded me of something I couldn't quite place and after another listen of EU it clicked.

I gotta say, Beautiful Love is one of my favorites on the whole album. I know it's short and simple but it really just hits me the right way. I hope they extend it live.

BL aint my jam. just can't get past how badly it doesn't work. But that's fine i've embraced the album's experimentation and am fine with it because these tracks may speak to me years down the road. But stuff like Spinnin, Thinkin, Run It (a really weird title out of everything it could be titled but ok), Wasted, Feel You, even Climbin the Ladder i love its Houses of the Holyisms.

There are some weak tracks, BL taking the cake and eating it too.
BUT......that said must also be said that this isn't a B sides album. I'm more on the side of the Waterfall II being worth more than that and it IS. It takes its place, no matter how bizarre it may be, some of these tracks will grow upon us.

And for the fact that Welcome Home, Run It, Magic Bullet, Wasted and Feel You are in the Top 50-75 Jacket songs, I'd put WH at my number 40, Run It around number 60 for now, Wasted and Feel You both in the top 25 and Magic Bullet somewhere in the 50s.

If this is the band's second helpings than just wait for the new record...that's gonna be the real facemelter. There's about 4 songs over 7 minutes on the band's upcoming record and it really IS live...not "Circuital" live...but REALLY live....shhhhh gonna be magic

Welcome Home is definitely different than the iTunes XMas EP.  The others are the same I believe.

Yup!!!  I ordered through the band, got the email today with tracking.  Shipped USPS, so I'm hoping to get within a month.  A poster I sold in late June and shipped via USPS took 7.5 weeks to go about 200 miles.  Trump is an ass clown.

I ordered the deluxe package too with the signed pic. I know I got one too as I got an email saying I was getting the pic.

Also ordered the deluxe "Z" and my conformation said shipping after Sept 7th but I would be getting a digital download code on Aug 28th which is the re-release date.

Thank you for your purchase of the WATERFALL II Deluxe LP or Bundle. Due to an error in our shipping department, a small number of vinyl orders were accidentally shipped out of order to fans. Unfortunately, your order was one that was affected and it will now ship after September 7th. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for understanding. We will be upgrading your shipping method for your package to arrive as quickly as possible, and you will receive tracking info once it ships (be sure to check spam filters as shipping notifications can sometimes get stuck). You will also be receiving a separate email with a discount code for 20% off of a future purchase. Thank you again for your patience and for supporting My Morning Jacket. If you have any questions, please email us at info@colortestmerch.com.

Honestly, this whole colortest situation is stupid. Sounds like people have been having an issue with them for awhile, let alone from this preorder. Question is, why hasn't the band done anything about it? I'm sure they have to be aware of some of these issues, why not find a new site to go through that doesn't screw their biggest fans?

I get that for sure, but for a company to take my money, tell me I'll get something on release day, and not even have the decency to send out a mass email saying there were shipping delays, sorry for any inconvenience, is kind of messed up.

Stuff happens, I get it, but keeping a customer informed on what they gave you money for should be assumed, not a luxury

In the LP listing it said that the 1st 1000 orders would receive theirs by release date (which ended up being pushed back a week or so).

Also said after those first 1000, they wouldnt start shipping those until after Sept 7.

I just got a response from colortest merch that messed my spotify bundle up and sent me what says is green/orange, but looks blue/orange. They said that they have come to learn that there have been a number of fans who received a copy that was a different color than advertised, and that they are experiencing a limited number of replacements from manufacturer over the next few weeks.

I had to send them photos of the disc. My concern is that I got the TOTALLY wrong version. Sounds like some of the green/orange pressing came off as blue and not green... We'll see what they come back with.
Title: Re: The Waterfall II
Post by: MMJCOBRA on Sep 10, 2020, 09:32 PM
Mine is blue and red.

General rule of thumb.... The cooler the mock, the greater the differential from the actual product.

This LP is about middle of the mock vs actual road.

Feel You is #1 on Billboard's "Adult Alternative" chart. Their first #1 on any song chart I believe.

Vinyl has finally arrived. Signed pic included. Looks great. Carl signed on Bo's legs so, it's easier to see.

Still no shipping notification, no answer to emails, nothing.

Did anyone actually get the digital download code from colortest on August 28th?  I got the email in mid July saying the album shipping date but was pushed to after September 7th and in the same email said I would get a digital download on the album release date (which I understood when I purchased the album) but I never got anything via email.

10 days and still no response on the digital download question or when I can expect the album to be shipped.  I see others complaining about this entire process and as a small business owner myself I don't see how there is any excuse to treat your customers this way, covid or not, if anything the band should have plenty of time right now to figure out how they sell their products to the public. It really isn't that hard logistically in this day and age, it's a complete disservice to their fans that they can't ever seem to get this right. Other bands I pre-order records or packages through never seem to have this problem.

Sadly, the band and their management has made horrible choices when it comes to their merch/marketing over the years. Just terrible. It shouldn't be that difficult.

I looked back and I did get my digital dl code on 8/27 from colortest.
Not sure what happened in your case - could have been in a spam folder or the email was blocked?  Hard to tell.

In any case, I wish it were smoother as well.  It sucks to hear about all these snafus.

I think that in the future they should implement a system where you create an account on their website when you preorder something that has a digital download and you can log in on a certain date and it will be available to you.  That or they could use bandcamp or another site to let you download - so you don't necessarily have to depend on getting the email for the link.

The indie exclusive copy I have has pops throughout after several cleanings. I've heard it's an issue with the other pressings as well. I would take a good pressed & mastered version over 20 different color variants any day of the week. Super frustrating as I really love this record.

Pushed back again until October 9th in the UK :undecided:

The band/management/whoever 100% need to go with someone else for their products/merch in the future. This is ridiculous

Is everyone still waiting on vinyl and sweatpants/sweatshirt orders to be delivered? Just wanted to make sure I didn't miss them. Thanks!

Yeah, still waiting ... I ordered a few things besides the deluxe vinyl, which was probably not a smart thing to do. Ordered fairly early too, but missed being in the first 1000.  Received an email on Sept 29 saying "It's coming shortly ... look for a shipping notice email".

Which has yet to be sent.

Vinyl finally arrived!

Mine is a weird brown colour. Until you hold it up to light you'd never know it was red/green. BUT it sounds great and the artwork is stunning so I'm just gonna resign and say, whatever dude. I really want foil artwork for W1 to sit alongside this now

Received my deluxe yesterday! Were there just a few lucky ones with the signed Danny Clinch photo?

I missed out.

I had a couple of extra download cards from the two vinyl albums I bought, so I already shared one on Instagram and am sharing the other one here. I know most people here probably already have it, but I thought eventually, somebody would find it who didn't have it yet.

Betsy and I watched a concert live stream yesterday from ALO.  It was the first full on live show we've seen since the virus mess started and it was excellent!

But the highlight was their cover of...

Run It!!!!!!

Yes, ALO played Run It live before MMJ and it was freaking awesome.  Chills down my spine fun.  We want more and we want it now!

Would love to hear it. Randomly, ALO was actually the last live music my wife and I saw before it all got shut off, in Santa Barbara on Valentine's Day last year.

ALO played Neil Young's Don't Let It Bring You Down sometime before Run It, so we were completely off our rockers when it started already.  If we weren't freaking out so hard we might have remembered to record it with our cell phone, but alas that opportunity was missed.  Hopefully ALO puts the full show up on archive.org at some point because there are lots of fans that were unable to catch the live stream and there was no real way to record it.

Saturday's ALO show was recorded somewhere in Marin County which of course is where TWII was recorded, and that led us to speculate about how MMJ and ALO interact behind the scenes (if at all).  Did ALO have some sort of access to MMJ when this was recorded, or are they working off their copy of the album just like the rest of us?  Inquiring minds want to know!!!

This album is so good.  Almost wish they would have given it a different name to separate it from the original waterfall.  I easily like it better than WF1, Circuital, and EU.
