Title: 2003-02-05 - Colin Murray Session, Maida Vale Studios, London UK
Post by: downdownyoubringmedown on Feb 24, 2021, 04:14 PM
Hey everyone - I'm a big MMJ fan from way back when. I first saw them in the Fall of 2002 opening for Doves at their first Canadian show and saw them every time they came through town 2002-2005, and again in 2008. Unfortunately, I haven't seem them since, but that will be corrected when they get out on the road for the new album - hopefully in 2022. However, going through my old music collection I have gone back down the MMJ Rabbit Hole, and it's been glorious, rediscovering the magic of those early years, and the evolution of the band over time.

It's made me start trying to track down as many live shows as I can that aren't in my collection. Last night it jogged my memory that I received this FM session directly from a taper in the UK, who burned it to a CDR and sent it to me way back in 2003 (with a cover and all). I know I passed it onto one of the forum bootleg legends (I think johnnYYac but can't be sure - it was a long, long time ago) so I'm sure some of you have it.

That said, it doesn't show up on the Archive, and it isn't listed in the "Sessions" section of the MMJ Setlist Archive, but it is mentioned on Ger's site. This is from their short Winter 2003 tour of the UK where they also did a Gideon Coe BBC6 Session, which I am desperate to find!

Anyways, it's a great little session with a bit of a ridiculous interview, but it has nice versions of Lowdown and Bermuda Highway, and a kick-ass version of Black Sabbath. Nice to have an in-studio session of that! The quality is excellent, you can make out very slight distortion during the quiet parts with good headphones on, but nothing that takes away from the listening experience. The tracking is off (interview starts at the end of a song, etc.), but since they are  WAV you can rework it if you like. I've uploaded the WAVs ripped directly from the CDR I was sent and scanned the cover. Hope you enjoy!

1. Interview 1
2. Lowdown
3. Interview 2
4. Bermuda Highway
5. Interview 3
6. Black Sabbath

Now, since I'm back down the MMJ bootleg hole, (I'm PM'ing people all over the place!) I'd love it if anyone has any of the following early FM/SBD sessions. If you do, please post, I'd love to get my hands on them, and I'm sure others would too. Thanks in advance!

I recognize a lot of those.  Have you checked archive.org for any of them?

Yes - none of the above shows are on the archive except for the 2005-11-10 MBE show, which is recorded from the stream (looking for FM source). They probably look familiar because they were circulated back in the day, so if anyone has any of the above and feels like sharing, that would be greatly appreciated. Cheers!

Thanks for sharing this! It is really awesome when old shows pop up. Do you happen to have any other recordings in your collection that are not on archive?

It might take me a few days, but I'll dig out the hard drive my MMJ archive is on and I'll see if I have any of them.

cgreen2599 - I will be going through my hard drive to see what else I have that's not on the archive, and I am working on getting a show or two - I'll post whatever I have. This show stood out because I had the actual CDR.

I do believe I have the 2008 2 Meter Session and I'll get that uploaded when I get a chance.  No luck on any of the others yet because I still haven't found any of my live archives from before 2008...

I've uploaded this one to Archive. Thanks again for sharing. Love the heavy reverb on Bermuda Highway and the Black Sabbath just absolutely slays.

Been enjoying these throwbacks a whole bunch. Someone posted Sayonara the other day, and it's a nice tune. It's no Sukiyaki, but it's real gentle on the heartstrings, I reckon.
