Post by: CC on May 13, 2021, 02:05 PM
My Morning Jacket, along with many of our favorite artists and pals, will be returning to Mexico in 2022, this time to a new resort in partnership with CID Presents. Stay tuned for lineup, venue and package info in the coming weeks!

It's a new company—CID not Cloud9– so different property and likely bigger and more expensive.

I hope prior attendees still get some priority or it'll be a shitshow.

Excited. But Blerg. 😬

Getting to the DR is wwwwaaayyyy harder than Cancun especially for the west coast and it put a damper on demand.

Maybe I'm just a worrywart. Hope it's just my nervousness.

Can anyone give me a frame of reference for what costs will look like? I'm anticipating it being more expensive than previous years... but what did previous year costs look like?

For reference:
There will be 4 of us and we dont need the best of the best lodging. I just want to be there!!!

For OBH 4 in Dominican Republic, my wife and i paid $1689/person so 3,378 total for the cheapest room they offered. no add-on nights or anything

CID's involvement means you should expect to pay more. Not sure how bad it'll be.

Last time was pretty much a perfect lineup for my wife and I and somewhere we'd never been. Not sure I'd do Mexico, which we've both been to plenty, for more money unless the lineup blows us away.

On the other hand it was one of our best vacations ever so we'll probably make it happen.

This is the resort and room options and somewhat probably near the pricing one would expect - jacket may cost less than Dead & Co, but will probably be similar.

Soooo soooo stoked for this, if I had to guess I'd say same as others said something similar to Playin in the Sand for venue at the Moon Palace (CID does this one as well). I paid just over 7k for 2 but that was kinda a treat room, lowest tier was around 2100.

No matter where, I'll be there, wish to hell they would have announced before Playin tickets went on sale, but oh well guess I'm stuck going to both

Can't wait!!! I've never been to any of the other OBH but a couple best friends and I decided next time they do it, if ever, we're definitely doing it! So freaking stoked!

Do tickets for on sale for everyone at the same time since there is no longer roll call?

Not sure if presale codes will be a thing because of the new company...

But.

if they are doing presale codes again.... would you only receive one if you'd gone to the previous obh? I had to miss the last one but, wondered if previous purchases would still keep me in the running. Anyone have any insight?

This is like the million dollar question. It could be that they carryover the alumni list and that would be huge. I suppose they could also factor in the other CID Jacket events they've done the last few years. Either way, I hope they do something for the fans given that this will mean an increase in cost.

And I hope this means a huge undercard. I noted the return of friends and that could mean some great drawing power. I'm sure they could sell out moon  palace with the right price point and other bands.

yeah, now I see the concert venue is tucked away in the north end of the resort, facing away from everything. No free listening.

Still hope it's fans only.

They have to do something or they are going to piss off the most dedicated Jacket fans. The name of the event carried over - the list will carry over (I hope). Also all the CID events offer first dibs to previous attendees, so its not like this organization has different rules.

I went to obh2 and it was 1400 per person plus flight.  Even then i thought it was a bit excessive for a few nights in cancun.

But if this ends up being 2500 a person, thats 5000 plus lets pretend flights ease back into the 350 range from chicago, 5700, and then we will round up to 6000 for tipping and whatever.

Six thousand dollars.

Ive seen this band over 40 times, they are by far my favorite live band, but thats insane.

For that amount of money you could:

2 Roundtrip flights to 3 different US cities:  $300 × 2 × 3 = 1800

A nice Airbnb in 3 cities for a total of 8 nights (two 3 night runs, 1 2-nighter): $250 × 8 = $2000

8 pairs of tickets: $100 × 2 × 8 = $1600

Grand Total: $5400 plus food.

Or you could cut that in half, just do one 3 night run and go lavish, and save $3000.

Im not trying to shit on anyone who decides to do this, this is just an exercise in exasperation.  Even though my wife loves Tulum and it would be very easy to head down there the Saturday prior and relax a bit, theres no way to justify the cost for me.  Happiness has limits.

Mother of god, for that price they better take requests and play every single one.

We love Denver and were at the last NYE run.  Bring it on!

And Stevie I am right there with you and unfortunately I suspect we are going to see concert ticket prices go through the roof especially for these sorts of events in large part because of the Covid-19 related troubles we're seeing almost everywhere.  I hope I'm wrong...

On the pricing complaints, to each their own of course, and everyone's financial situations are different. But I'll just say that I think the best way to look at it is through the lens of the cost of an all-inclusive vacation in Mexico, with the HUGE added bonus of your favorite band (and other great bands) playing there.  It's a great value in that regard. It's always going to be expensive compared to attending regular shows. OBH4 was a life highlight for my wife and me.

I think this is wonderful news but I have always hesitated, partly because of the cost as well.   It would eat into most of the live music budget for the year for me.
I would love to go though and I feel like they should do one night of requests for the fans....that would rule!

I've been to all the OBH's and for me its worth every penny to be with like minded folks in a venue like that. Usually the undercards are phenomenal, foods serviceable and vibe is out of this world. Also worth mentioning every OBH I have attended was setup where the resort was ours and ours alone including the first year when they certainly had capacity to sell rooms to the public (event wasnt sold out)

been down to Tulum after twice now and while its changed a bit in that its become the "popular" place to go it still is an awesome place to decompress with a bohemian vibe after a few days of rocking out. The beaches there are insane, food is out of this world and overall vibe is just sooooo chill.

We know for sure if its at the Moon, looking at the pic they sent and the report I dont necessarily place it at Moon.
Title: Re: OBH 2022
Post by: Stevie on May 15, 2021, 10:04 AM
I feel a little bad for posting that but let me just agree with and emphasize that it is truly a "to each their own" situation and for many the money is worth it.  I know I'm not the only one here that at one point found themselves caught up in a feeling and chased this band around the country for a bit.  But at one point i realized that i was attempting to fill basic happiness requirements with something that should have been complimentary.  I overdid it.  Big time.  My life greatly improved once i stopped doing that and focused on the important things.  Now the music is gravy.

I think it would be easier to justify if my wife liked the band more.  She likes some songs and she had a really good time at NYE in Colorado, but i can tell it's not really her thing.  We also just bought a house at the absolute worst time to buy a house, and then had to fill it up with furniture after moving from a studio apartment.  I'm a bit tired of spending money right now!

Anyway, depending on how things shake out, you guys might get the first live rendition of the new album.  I think that would be really cool.

Does anyone know if you were able to book a single occupancy room for the other OBH?

Sadly, due to some super shitty circumstances I am recently separated, and with that separation also comes with the loss of my built in MMJ buddy and the only one who would put out this kind of coin for something like this. We even got engaged at OBH2.

But, enough with the sob story. This Stella is ready to get her groove back and I dont wanna miss out. I'm a little nervous about the thought of going solo but, even worse is the thought of missing out! Anyone have any info on how (if at all) singles are able to be booked? I wanna say you couldn't book 1 per room last time. I'm hoping I'm wrong.

Check out the CID entertainment site for Dead & Co Playin in the Sand. CID is taking over for Cloud 9 and I assume this package is representative for OBH. There are packages for single guests.....it will be very pricey....but it exists.

I don't know about anyone else but I've been trying hard as I can to get an idea of what prices will look like. I'm worried they're gonna be super expensive with the cost of Dead and Company's being high and that being the most relative comparison if it is in fact at moon palace as it seems to appear to be.

I looked up Wilco's Sky blue Sky and it's a lot more reasonable but obviously being ran by another company and different site. OBH's of the past seem to have been anywhere from $2,000-$2,500 a person? Does that sound right for an average room for 2 or so? Anyway, I'm just hoping it's not upwards of $3,000-4,000 a person or this may be a tough call to make. Really want to go though!!!!

I just checked in my emailS and found the invoice from the last OBH I went too (3) and I got the one of the "upgraded" rooms with the rooftop deck & hot tub and an extra day before and after and it wasn't even 2k per person, close but not quite. I just cannot imagine them charging 3k plus for the more standard options. Unless your getting a penthouse package, my vote is there's no way.

Anxiously awaiting either way.

Thanks!! That's definitely more reasonable and makes me a little more optimistic about the cost. I'm prepared to do what I can to go, but it would sure make me feel a lot better with a slightly more affordable price! 😂😬

OBH 3 was Mexico, too.

But, this resort seems like maybe a little more $$$ but, idk I'd be shocked if it was  as expensive as some of the guesses so far.

I also don't love the different prices for different areas of the resort. I hope the info is released soonnnnn so we can just know.

Quote from: toysrmike on May 25, 2021, 09:41 AMMexico will for sure be more expensive than DR.  Based on the post from Phish and DMB at moon palace $2500USD entry level seems likely.

Saaammmmeee!!!! I've been checking multiple times every day!

Tour sold quite well, so I assume we'll hear right after Memorial Day weekend. I know a bunch of folks wanted to know before the Wilco Mexico onsale today and tomorrow but are holding out for OBH.

Like other folks above, I'm definitely anxious about the new company and what I assume will be higher prices. But I've also heard the property is a major upgrade and hope that they really bring it for the undercard.

I think the music gawds are f'n with me on this one, these two are literally back to back with 2 days off in between. I would LOVE to just stay there for ten days, but don't think that is realistic. We are going to have to pick one or the other and that is no easy task.

y'all heard any chatter on the number of nights of music for OBH5?

CID's save the date says March 2-5, which is 4 nights (sounds ok so far), but all 4 prior announcements have been for 5 "nights" - I assume counting the exit day.

maybe this is just different announcement format through CID?  or maybe not?

I see what your saying, OBH4 thru Cloud 9 said 3/2 thru 3/6 which was 4 nights of music.  My guess is it is 4 nights of music just the way CID puts it. Walterfredo, how many night of music is Phish as it says 2/24 thru 2/27.

This is true, it was a shit show. However, Phish has a much larger fan base than jacket does, I don't expect OBH on sale to be anywhere near as stressful.

You're not wrong. But it's indicative of the CID approach vs Cloud9. Cost more and not necessarily a focus on the fan experience.

I dont know anything about the Phish event... however, when I perused the Playin in the Sand packages my first impression was that the layout sucked. I felt pretty overwhelmed with it and I wasnt even getting tickets. The different areas of the resort being different areas to click on. The way that it's grouped by occupants and days of trip separately and not listed as just add ins after. Did not like. And I can def see it being stressful day of on sale.

I've been to all four OBHs but I don't expect any presales whatsoever, especially with the change from cloud 9 to CID.

Title: Re: OBH 2022

Cloud9 does time-based presale windows and nontransferable codes for alumni. It's a better fairer system than CID's. They did it for at least OBH 3 and 4.

The issue with the new company is that the alumni list is likely proprietary so it depends on what the band's contract with Cloud9 says and whether there is a way to get that data into the CID system. I sort of doubt it is possible. But who knows.

Since CID has done prior events for jacket they could look to their lists for the NYE17 and 2019 shows. That would be imperfect but would be something. Either way I'm sure it will work out.

Really hope this is right. Her response is silent, and therefore ambiguous, as to what will get you a presale. Could be prior OBH attendance. Could be prior CID-jacket related activity. I hope it's the former. But good that they are trying to figure it out and have some kind of presale for the fans

She mentions a presale but it is a little ambiguous. It could be that they have the Cloud9 list. Or they could give presale codes to people who have done prior CID events. Or both. Good that they are doing something for fans though.

Same. MMJ will almost certainly bring PHJB (who I'm always happy to see, personally) out to play on several occasions. Highly likely we see that with Brittany Howard as well, given their collaborations in the past (I'll never tire of hearing them cover It Makes No Difference). Would love to see some covers on the beach (loved the OBH4 album run through sets, but that's the one thing I missed) and they have a great collection of artist to collaborate with, assuming the other acts are hanging around, of course. IMO, those moments make OBH extra special: surprise Bob Weir at OBH1, all of the covers and family feel to OBH2, Lucius bringing those Pink Floyd covers to life at 3.

Fully agree. Don't understand the people that decide to go to OBH based on supporting acts. Kind of missing the point. To each their own though.

Price increase seems a bit extreme though.

The price increase is extreme - I have always added the extra day in the beginning for the previous OBH events I went to.  If I do the same thing this time, I'm paying nearly 2K more for the trip for myself and my wife.  I'm pretty annoyed by the move to CID, seems like a giant price increase for the same event.  Unless I am missing something, the price increase doesn't come with any added value...feels very cash grab'y.

I think the only clear Added value is the quality of the resort. I can't speak for the quality of the venue in DR, but the hard rock was nothing special in the food was awful. I haven't been to the Moon Palace but from what I hear it is a significant upgrade. Probably doesn't warrant that level of price increase though.

This was the deciding factor for us. I just can't justify it when I assume there will be plenty of shows to travel to next year.

Defiantly more expensive than I'd like, but I'll be there. As for the support bands, to each their own, but I'm looking forward to them, with the exception of PHJB (whom are awesome) its all fresh and I havent seen any of them live so should be fun.

I'm on the fence but currently leaning no.  I like the lineup but the price increase is pretty nuts IMO.  It just seems like a bad value now  ( I know, I know, you can argue that seeing them live is ALWAYS a good value and most times I'd agree, but look at this ).  Here's my prices from past OBH's and then what it would cost this year.

OBH 2 - $2878 ( basic room )
OBH 3 - $3678 ( with upgrade to concert courtyard)
OBH 4 - $3778 ( with room upgrade )
OBH 5 - $4793 ( cheapest possible room for 2 people and doesn't yet include fees )

Plus we typically like to add on an extra night or two which would drive this price up close to 6k and that's before flights.  So now OBH 5 would probably cost close to 7k in total.  In past years, it was always under 5k.  I'm not trying to sound cheap but I just don't see any changes here to warrant that...kinda feels like we're getting raked over by CID and it's leaving a bad taste for me.

I feel the exact same way as you - CID has always rubbed me the wrong way.  I really want to go as I know it is going to be an amazing time, but I'll be paying 2K more for the same room package compared to the last OBH.  I know these prices are consistent for other CID events, but it feels like price gouging to me.  I just don't see the added value, especially with a bigger resort and more people.  I was really hoping they would just return to the original Hard Rock location with Cloud 9 this year...I'm really going to have to think about this one...

Their pricing is close to Dead and Company who is a much bigger draw and I assume considerably more expensive to book.

the concert courtyard at HRRM is the closest I'll ever get to heaven on earth.  Punta Cana was pretty cool, too. You could wander in and out as you pleased, no entrance or exit, centrally located.

The moon palace setup......specific venue area, show your wristband to get in, tucked away in the far north end of the resort......a step in the wrong direction, IMO.

Gonna be an agonizing week trying to make a decision. Right now it's a no go, but I'm sure I'll change my mind a few dozen times each day.

Right there with you, minus the concert courtyard.  I was just telling my wife last night that the concert pavilion is my favorite venue anywhere.

On the fence for this, which sucks.  Such a huge fan of what Cloud 9 and Hard Rock Riviera Maya has done, improving each year.  In addition to OBH 2015 & 2017, I've been there for Closer To The Sun 2019 (Slightly Stoopid's festival) and am happy to be going back in early December for a second time.

Can't believe I'm on the fence...

Will this even sell out?

I was looking up previous year prices. You could get one of the nicest rooms for the price of a basic room for this one.

I really planned on finally going this year, but this price jump is wild.

Price is an issue but doesn't make it out of the question for us. A simple scheduling question. Does the fact that it's a separate concert venue have anything to do with set times or curfew? We did OBH1&3 but I can't totally remember when shows ended at night. I don't want abbreviated MMJ sets at night because other people on the resort aren't at the show. If prices are so high do they give a shit if they sell enough concert tickets when rooms can be sold cheaper to the general public?

Chatter seems low compared to past OBH events - there is usually a thread on Phantasy Tour as well and that is also quiet.

Not sure the lineup blew people away - and I know for me I am bit pissed off about the major price increase.

The sentiment is mixed.  Not happy about the increased pricing, the larger venue, and the lineup didn't hit home for a lot of people.  But a lot of folks are just excited that OBH is back.

I'm in the middle, was hoping for a little bit more as far as the lineup goes, but there are still bands to be added.  Stoked to be seeing Lord Huron, Sharon Van Etten, and Steel Pulse.  I'm sure Black Pumas will be great, but we'll see them at Ohana.  Hoping Brittany throws in some Alabama Shakes tunes during her set, but she hasn't done that in the past.  Not happy about the price increase, but this is post COVID, so I get that there may be some additional profit taking.  It is what it is.

Pretty sure my wife & I are going, along with our friend.  We'll end up paying about $550 more than we paid for OBH2 (airfare excluded), but this will be triple occupancy double beds instead of a King bed and rooftop jacuzzi.  But it's worth it.

Onward to OBH5!!!

So my wife took the initiative and called CID and this is what she found out. CID will not be announcing any more bands before the on-sale, but they are still looking to sign more bands. They also would not confirm lord huron as the second headliner, which leads me to believe that one of the mystery band they are trying to sign could be a bigger name. There will definitely be pool parties at Nizuc which might have live music. The resort will be mainly guest for OBH with maybe 5 - 10 percent not there for the music, which is likely time shares.

Not sure if all this is common knowledge, but I figured I put it out there.

Good info good dr.  Bummer that they won't announce any more bands before the on-sale, that would help a lot of folks feel better about the price increase.  Interesting about Lord Huron.  I thought their tweet about a 'headline length' set was interesting.  In past OBHs, the opening band each night typically got a headline length set, between 75 & 90 minutes, so I could still see them as an opener if they can get a bigger name for the non-MMJ night.

Muchas gracias to your wife!

Good info - thanks you for passing it on.

My guess is the bands that are added depends on how this thing initially sells.  If sales are weak we might get another "headliner", if not we are getting late night acts and pool DJs.

I for one will be there, it's been to long, I need to catch up with friends and enjoy that overall experience and vibe of OBH. I get it that the price is frustrating, it is to me as well but I'm trying to find the positives and one for me is the food quality looks way better then the previous 2 Hard Rocks have had. Honestly the DR food was horrible for the most part, and Riviera Maya Hard Rock was only slightly better (the after show street taco's is the only reason why) The other bands don't bother me as much as it does some others, it is what it is and it's not like it's a bunch of nobody's. I bet Steel Pulse will kill in that atmosphere. I'll miss Lucius of coarse but their busy with Rodger Waters and good for them, they deserve that sort of attention. At least PHJB is coming and their the best. Hope to see you there!

Definitely annoyed about the CID involvement, which I flagged early, as it is their price structure at issue. But Cloud9's property in Mexico can't accommodate this without a lot of people not being able to go. Or they have to have a second overflow property (which they've now done for things like Brandi's event).

And the DR property was larger but far worse both in terms of food and drink quality and even general safety. (I caught an exotic strep and there was a bug issue) and some of the DR properties had people dying a few years ago due to tainted alcohol.

All this is to say that it sucks that it costs more but there will be value provided and we'll get to see one of the best live bands playing music today. 🤷‍♂️

I was on the fence, but the price and the lineup make the decision pretty easy for me. I'd be surprised if more big acts are incoming. The support acts aren't bad, but they don't really mesh with the party on the beach atmosphere.

Never been to an OBH, been looking forward to the announce and details.

At the moment at least, I'd be a single.  As much as I've wanted to do one of these - and the past few years drives home the fact nothing can be taken for granted to happen again - the almost $4K price for the entry level room with no option to upgrade, for just myself, is kind of a hard sell. I could get a Genesis 2021 VIP ticket for that! ( that one is for ericm lol)

But ... OBH, on a beach, yolo.  Wondering how many other potential solo travelers here are weighing the cost/benefit, think I've seen a couple posts.  I guess the half full view is it's still less than paying for two

Haha, I love it! You could actually do a few Genesis VIP's for that $$. Not that more than one would be needed for even an old school long time fan. They still do the same set every night of their tour.

As for OBH, I'll be passing once again. Gonna do MMJ Charlotte, three nights in Chicago and 1-2 Genesis shows (not VIP) instead.

It will be interesting to see if they can sell out all those extra rooms at that price point.

I just called CID about the early bird alumni 4 night package. I wanted to see if an additional night could be added, and they said no. They didn't sound very confident in that answer, but figured I would mention it. We have always arrived one day early which really make s the whole experience better. I hate the added stress of travel and check in and rushing to get settled in before the first show. I hope they are wrong and an additional night can be added since it is about an $1800 difference between the sale price savings for 4 nights vs the 5 night package.

been to 3 of these, arrived day-of-show twice.  no question, stress is high, lines are loooong, merch is gone.

arriving a day early is so much better.

We've been to all four, and always arrived the day early and was in the merch line 2 hours early to make sure we got a poster. If we go next year, it will only be the four days and I expect to have to buy a poster on the after market because of it.

Yep and glad to see they at least are attempting to give alum an added more affordable option. I was at a prior Dead show and didnt get that option when purchasing for the current sale, so this is something new as far as I know.

I know some are saying it's worked before and some are saying it doesn't, but it's worth a try and I'm willing to try. Anyway, anyone's help would be greatly appreciated!!! As for OBH, I'll be passing once again. Gonna do MMJ Charlotte, three nights in Chicago and 1-2 Genesis shows (not VIP) instead.

Figured you'd like that comment. Lol
Sounds like I'll get to buy you a drink and talk Genesis in Chicago then! Going all three nights too.

This Friday I went deep into the CO wilderness on a camping trip with my family.  There was no cell service or internet, but luckily I had downloaded some MMJ playlists onto my phone before leaving service.  Sitting back in my camp chair enjoying the view, I started to think about weather I should go to OBH this year and was the price worth it.  At that moment the cover they did of Trouble Sleep Yanga Wake Am they did with Brittany and Merrill came on and I decided there is no way I can miss OBH!!!

Upon arriving home I learned about the special discount alumni package - def. shooting for that on Tuesday, but even if that doesn't happen I'm going.  I'm not missing Jacket on the Mexico beach!

According to CID, they are not transferable at all. That said, they seem to have allowed it in years past for their events. I think they say you can't but when push comes to shove, you actually can. But of course can't guarantee this to be the case.

Saw my first MMJ OBH full-length commercial on YouTube before a nature video my wife and I were going to watch came on. I usually skip all commercials, but I recognized the music playing in the background and pointed it out to my wife. Then I noticed it was actually a commercial for MMJ's OBH!!! Unreal!!!

Same. We also tried for this room type for phish, no dice. Was thinking for OBH it would be a little easier, had 3 of us trying for it and nada. I don't think there's that many of those rooms. All good though just happy to be there!

JMO, but I think it's doing well. Most rooms at Sunrise are gone and tons at Nizuc are as well.

It's just an enormous facility. Maybe twice as big as HRRM?  Anyone know the difference in capacity.

Either way, it'll either be more room to dance or another top act or two will be added to push ticket sales.

Probably didn't help that every other major tour has also been announced in the last month or so.

I doubt CID is psyched with the sales and there are a ton of rooms left I bet. True the specialty rooms are largely gone but the inventory there is super low.

Maybe this will motivate them to bring on another high profile act. Or they should keep it an intimate affair and blow the roof off the place. I also suspect that if they crush their tour then more folks will get on board.

I bet CID will have a presence at the venues trying to move inventory.

really hard to say, cuz this location is so much larger when you consider these are essentially four resorts all on site. I think the overall capacity is as high as 8-10K (based on what I heard from Phish sources). They would never reach that level of attendance. I don't have the info on the other OBH events, but judging only by my memory and eyes at OBH2, I don't think there was more than 3-4K in attendance, but that's just a guess.

I hope they need to add more bands to make this sell.  Specifically, someone on the bill above Lord Huron.  This event at current prices is bringing in A LOT of money and they can get some more bands on the list, and everyone can still make lots of money.

Why not release more 4 day options since those seem to be what is selling the best? The $650 per person for an extra night is steep. By comparison Holidaze was $200 per person for an extra night.

Has anyone had any luck in the past with transferring their trip to another person?  Unfortunately, my husband has relapsed and I am looking to cancel the trip all together since we are now making a huge investment to his recovery.  OBH was something to look forward to for a bit but has now become a burden and not a very high priority. Anyway, CID is allowing me to cancel but not refunding the previous payments but suggested I may be able to transfer the reservation if anyone is interested and then get reimbursed directly for the first two payments. We booked the 5-Night Nizuc Superior Deluxe Ocean View for 2 People - 2 Double Beds (Tues Check-In).  Y'all let me know if you have any insight.  Sorry to be Debbie Downer.

I'm pretty sure all of the previous OBH trips had a meeting set each day. It was probably set up by Cloud 9 because it was on the schedule that was handed out. Hopefully CID does the same thing 👍🏻

I've lost confidence that we will get nugs releases of these shows due to the lack of recent releases. For those going, was there any official communication about those being a part of the package again? I know for the first few the recordings were included in the package.

And, if no official word, anyone have any idea if a taper will be going to these shows?

Shyt thats a good point I dont see any mention, I'd be way pissed if they dont do it, for me thats part of the experience reliving it every time I relisten to the shows.

^the posters will not be available for pre-purchase. At least they weren't for phish.

I'm here on site now for phish riviera Maya. Happy to help with info if anyone has any questions.

PSA: For those that might be curious of such...the customs/search leaving the airport is essentially non-existent. I've been through the Cancun airport a few times and they typically have the red/green light thing where you have to push the button, on red You get "searched". Some reported the button thing in action but most of the time you just walk right out. Zero search. Nothing. So basically if you're not an idiot you can bring whatever you want.

I'm pretty much the opposite of a rail rider. But I asked a buddy of mine who rocks it. And I kinda doubt they'll do the it same way at OBH that they're doing here at phish. For phish they make people wanting to be on the rail go to venue at 2 pm to get a numbered wristband. Then later they pick a random starting number and before they open the gates people who got wristbands can enter in the numbered order...or something like that. But there's way more people here. If I have to guess at OBH you'll just line up. But we'll see.

I can say from talking to CID staff here on site they seem very much looking forward to OBH! Everyone seems to be very excited about it. And it's gonna be half (less than half?) the size of phish and I'm looking forward to some quaint oceanfront jacket! If anyone is even remotely on the fence on this and can still pull it off, you're gonna wanna do it!

Agreed Parker, it really feels like they've turned that corner from this past tour and what these shows will showcase, a huge variation of their entire catalog in each set. So bummed i couldn't make this one, couple of my best buds are out there and they said last night was magical. Excited to see how the next 2 end up, assuming Brittany comes out tonight with them?

wow so okay.....OBH 5 was incredible, could this be the best one ever, or is 2018 still in pole position???

I feel like this one really did a lot to deliver...look at night I....jesus christ, a bonus 2 hours and 35 minute soundcheck ? Damn....

I don't understand the Lucky To Be Alive opener, kinda hilariously dumb that positioning but hey, it's what they wanted to do. For me, i love that second half of that song so much but that first part just....I can't get past it.

Besides that, this was balls to the wall for 4 nights:
SOONER....
WELCOME HOME opener.....
STRANGULATION....
STEAM ENGINE into I COULD NEVER GET ENOUGH (Mini)...brilliant
IN COLOR into MERCY MERCY ME / WHAT'S GOING ON....This is becoming a thaaaang and i love it. Very proud to say I've seen the Mercy Mercy Me debut, one of my favorite songs of all time.
CAN'T YOU HEAR ME KNOCKING w/ TREY ANASTASIO?
ROCKETMAN w/ TREY ANASTASIO?????
MAHGEETAH w/ TREY ANASTASIO SINGING PARTS OF IT???

DAAAAAAMN.....

You don't like the song so it's dumb to open with it? Huh? Given the context and subject matter of the song it actually makes a whole lot of sense as the opening song.

Heartbreaker man. I did that a few years back w a foil Cap Theatre Phil Lesh poster and a signed To Kill a Mockingbird cast poster.

Had the Uber head back to the airport.  Nothing at security, called the next day....nothing.

We'll just have to keep an eye out for the artist poster on sale time.

I'm sure I would have enjoyed the shit out of these shows had I been there, but as someone who is mainly looking at these shows in terms of the recordings I hope to listen to and as someone who is a major completist in terms of having live renditions of every song in the catalog, seeing Still Thinking as a soundcheck song only to not be played is a punch to the gut. I love that tune.

Call the airport and ask to be connected to lost and found.  My friend left his poster at the airport, and it ended up in lost and found and they mailed it to him.

I have filed a lost and found submittal through Alaskan airlines. Assuming your friends was not left on the plane, but just at the airport? I will give it a shot though, but the airport was LAX and the likelihood seems low. But I appreciate the input and will give that a try as well. I have also reached out to the poster artist but no response yet.

I find it very surprising there was just one debut across all 3 nights with so many new songs that haven't been played before.  It seems like they played it pretty safe with the setlists overall.

Yes airport not plane.  It was a cool one that he was bummed about losing (Merriweather Post poster signed by the band back when they were doing the soundcheck fan club pre show gatherings) and psyched about getting back.

If you haven't already picked up the other OBH live recordings, I highly recommend them.  Among the very best shows in the MMJ catalog.  Other great shows are up on nugs.net as well, among them the Capitol Theater shows from some years back.

Back in the real world.....ugh was SUCH a great bunch of shows.

MMJ was on point as usual for me at least, one thought "IF" they do a 6th, why dont they go for 4 nights? they have the material.

PJHB was outstanding late night set was phenomenal only complaint would be not enough jams with MMJ. My hunch was with them doing the late night logistically it didnt work for last night of shows?

Lord Huron stepped up BIG time in my book. Heard they are not touring anymore? Hadnt seen them before but if thats accurate what a shame, good live band with some damm talented musicians.

Brittney rocked the joint and was just a joy to see

Black Pumas were a HUGE surprise for me, hadnt expected them to play as well as they did.

Trampled by Turtles were good, but not great. Hurts me to say a local band didnt deliver, but at least to these ears it just kinda all sounds the same. Luv the musicianship and Dave's got an outstanding voice but just didnt do it for me like I had hoped.

Had a blast, the people were awesome (as always) the resort was serviceable. That said, I heard from CID we had a little over 1/2 what Phish had (walter looking to you here for input), honestly I would prefer they stay with the smaller more intimate spots with 3k Could 9 will always be first in my eyes but I just like to root for the underdog.

Such an amazing experience...again! I try to avoid all of the rankings and comparisons of shows and such, but of the 2 OBHs we have been to, OBH2 and OBH5, OBH2 easily gets the nod on purely the music experience. But having a much deeper crew this go around, the fun factor was through the roof! Although agree with others, much prefer the smaller/quaint feel of the Hard Rock environment.

While not necessarily a huge fan of the song (certainly don't dislike it!), Lucky to Be Alive just felt absolutely perfect as an opener that night. Song placement just felt right...and it all just felt right. I felt lucky to be alive! And there in that moment!

I would say the attendance being about half of that of Phish is pretty accurate. It was night and day overall experience. Just a different crowd too...phish brings a whole different level of "pedal to the metal" with the scene. I've been seeing Phish for going on 30 years and they are my band, but my wife and I both agree that in the future we would be far more likely to attend OBH than Phish Riviera Maya...for multiple reasons, but the whole vibe and feel of OBH is just far more relaxing and friendly. And there is zero chance we would ever to the 2 back to back like we did this year (if the two happened to line up like this again). It was just exhausting. But glad we did it. I would not have been able to live with myself had I missed Trey come out with MMJ! That was f'ing amazing. We are however doing MMJ Red Rocks>Phish Dicks this summer. But there will be 4 days in between where we plan to work from our Airbnb and relax in Denver.

Just gotta love the positivity and friendliness of the OBH/MMJ crowd. Nothing else really even comes close to that feel!

Yes, no reason to think OBH 2023 won't happen.  OBH is pretty much the last of the all-inclusive festivals that happen (some start in early December, then they go until early March, when OBH was).  Heard at OBH 2022 that MMJ had a 5 year deal at Moon Palace, so 2023 is highly likely.

I think absolutely ticket sales are slow post covid (mid-covid?), and across the board not MMJ specific. At this point so many fans have been burned by covid-related cancellations after flights, hotels, etc. have all been booked. I know I have been burned twice so far and have wasted a ton of money. Combine that with the insane costs of flights/hotels/rental cars/gas, impending recession fears...all of it. Ticket sales are down industry wide I think.

I've been surprised at the smaller crowds of recent MMJ shows, but most of the mid-year industry stats show ticket sales numbers exceeding 2019 numbers. But with so many more bands touring (and at higher ticket prices) there's way more competition. The industry really seems to be bouncing back, but it doesn't mean post-Covid ticket sales for every single band are back to 2019 numbers, unfortunately.

There is still some hope because Playing in the Sand was just announced and is being held in January whereas OBH would be early March. A friend looked at the hotel and saw the OBH dates still blocked out. So that's another positive.

The huge but though is that the concert ticket market is pretty soft overall because everyone is touring. And hotel and airfares are high because of inflation. Even the Phish event didn't sell out immediately. Put that all together and those are a lot of headwinds.

My guess is that there's like a 20-25% chance it is happening. Maybe a little less.

I'd love if they pushed it back a couple months. Just works better with my schedule.
