Just give them a hug and tell them you are sorry that they were never loved as a child.  Tell them there is still hope.  They must look deep within themselves and find the inner child.  Learn to love themselves before they can love others, etc. etc. etc.

I told people that I felt sorry for them before.  :P

I have a few friends (one  married couple in particular) that told me that they don't like MMJ - based on a couple of listens of It Still Moves. I told them that they should give MMJ some more listens. It Still Moves was my introduction but it didn't grab me until a month after I bought it. However, this same couple leaned over to me and my wife on the dancefloor at my wedding in August and asked me "Who sings this song"? I said: "My Morning Jacket". The song was "I Will Be There When You Die".

I can understand some people being put off by the over-the-top reverb and some of the sombre and quiet meanderings heard on It Still Moves and At Dawn. I've even met a few people who don't like Jim's voice. I even understand that. I can't get too mad at someone who doesn't like MMJ, unless they make a blanket and ignorant statement. Of course some people will never like their style or bands of a similar ilk.

I have only come across 1 person who knew who they were and didn't enjoy them very much. This person was in attendance on one of the nights they were filming OKONOKOS too. Anyway he thought they were alright, but was surprised this last run at the Fillmore sold out. His words to me were "who are My Morning Jacket anyway, it's not like they are Creed or Nickleback." I said Uhhuh and changed the subject quickly. I couldn't think of anything else to say. Frankly I was shocked that someone who was there in person when they were filming OKONOKOS wasn't immediatley a huge fan, and couldn't be excited for everyone when their shows sold out this time. His loss, I say.

Why would you be shocked? It makes sense to me given the two bands he mentioned.

yeah, I guess you are right. His choice in music is just different. I just thought that because they are so great live, and he got to see them on such a special night that he would have been more into them. Oh well, I tried my best to convert him but it didn't happen.

I remember playing It Still Moves for my friend's brother, who I thought might enjoy it, but he didn't seem to care for it.  I then copied Z for him, hoping that would change his mind.  Again, nothing.  I guess they just aren't for everyone!  i did take my sister, who had only heard 1 or 2 songs to one of their shows, and she said it was one of the best live shows she's been to in a long time!!  I think she ended up buying Z the next day.  :)

i had "it still moves" playing. the owner (who's 24) of the bar i work at was there, and he voiced his displeasure. i really hate the guy. the way i see it, he just had warrant and brett micheals solo shows at the bar. so he can just keep his piggy little mouth shut!

then again its the same guy i asked what his favorite band was, and he said the doors. yet he couldn't name one song. how do you not know at least one doors song.

Well, he probably watched the movie like ten years ago.  :-/

Its hard to try to get some people into MMJ.  You have to give them time, sneak a few songs in there in the background, and just hope they take notice.  If they are dissapointed in one album and thast all they've heard, dont lose hope.  Try something from every album, (b-sides DEFINATELY) they are bound to attach to at least ONE song, if they have a soul.

I guess the way I see it is...either you get it or you don't. You cannot really mock a person for their choices (well, you CAN...) so I just let it be. I try like hell to let anyone I know hear the Jacket and if they get it, I like them even more! Hell,  my Mother got it and she's 66 years old!  ;D

I'm over it now though, and I feel bad for the guy. It's like that old saying You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink. I don't get it that other people don't get it. But I'm not sure I want them to turn into stadium and arena warriors either.

I love a lot of bands that play big places, and it's never as much fun as what we got going on in the small places with our Jacket on.

You get over it and stop being a butthead, thats what you do. If they dont like then they dont like it. Its as simple as that. You shouldnt worry so much about what other people are listening to you freak of nature. Why dont you make like a tree and get outta here.

Some people just dont see music as something deeper than just the sounds that come out of the speakers.  All of us as MMJ fans hear the magic.

I have a lot of friends who have never heard them before. "who?"
I also have a lot of friends who think they're boring - i get mad at these friends.
I get mad at my friends who like Widespread Panic and dont like MMJ.  I get mad at my friends who think Neil Young is amazing and Jim James sucks.  Ohhh well.  

Worst thing ever...when someone TURNS OFF My Morning Jacket to put in something far worse...like Phish or Tom Petty or Fleetwood Mac or.... The Eagles or fucking America or some bullshit vaniila music.  

MMJ is kind of threatening...passive music listeners dont like them as much.  Ex. Creed fans.

If they listen to classic rock like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, etc, tell them that you respect their taste in music, but when listening to today's music, MMJ is the best around.

If they listen to pop crap like Paris Hilton, or hip hop, tell them that it's okay, but their musical taste will probably change (improve) in the future.

If they listen to faux-rock like Creed and Nickelback, tell them to give MMJ a second listen. If they refuse and say that MMJ will always suck, feel free to insult their mothers, musical taste, and anything else you can think of.


In general, I follow those three rules.

Good job being an asshole.  [smiley=thumbup.gif] It's not really about fretting about what someone else listens to, more like trying to get people (mostly friends) to enjoy something that you feel so strongly about. Most of the time knowing they would if they would take the time to actually listen to the music , not just hear it.

Reading that just reminded me of when I watched okonokos after a few beers.....BOY did it kick some A**!  Of course, it works fine when you're sober too.  But I can definitely see where you're coming from.  The next time im at a  bar, and theres a jukebox, if by some miracle they have some MMJ on there, I'll start with One Big Holiday, and if that doesn't get anyones attention, then I'm just going to have to take the law into my own hands, and start knocking some sense into people!  ;D The Jacket would be the perfect soundtrack for a bar brawl, don't you think? LOL

I think the key is to play It Still Moves in the background, when you are trying to introduce them to new people. Little things will peak out while you are playing cards or drinking beers or whatever activity. Eventually a song will come on like Golden and somebody will say, 'who is this again?'

It's when you force it on people that they get offended. It's very dramatic music. And there's almost too much for somebody to absorb right off the bat. Just keep playing it in the background, espeically outdoors, like poolside or better yet out camping in the depths of the woods.

My brother claims he cant' stand them. And this is a guy who loves bands like the Outlaws and Pure Southern Guitar Rock. Songs like OBH and Strangulation are right up his alley and he wouldn't even know it.

There really is a song for everybody in the Jacket catalog.
