I would like to play a little game called Show Me Your Dondante.
Anyone who has a copy of a live Dondante, please give me the total running time of the song. I am looking for the longest ever played but I would like your numbers even if you know it won't compete. Why? Well first of all, because I'm a dork. But more importantly, I think it will help me find different versions based on time. I know there are really only two basic versions (I will call them V1 and V2), but they really seem to mix it up a lot with this song. For example, I am going to start with St. Louis as the longest V1 type. This is a show I attended and I recommend listening to at least the Dondante/Run thru if you get a chance. It seems different to me. And Bonnaroo '06 as the longest V2 type. These are just a couple I have on my office itunes so I am sure it wont' be hard to beat. Anyway, humor me....
St. Louis-Mississippi Nights-11/22/05 V1 Dondante 11:20
Bonnaroo-6/16/06 V2 Dondante 13:20
(Recording is 14:05 but has 45 seconds of crowd noise at end of track. Some of the copies have some running crowd noise on the track so once we have a few contenders for the title of "longest", I will check them to make sure.)
Again, give me your times even if it's not the longest and give me the version V1 or V2 if you know. V2 being the one with sax at the beginning.
The one from Okonokos says 11:20.......V1
Wow I didn't expect to get Okonokos. Exactly the same. Hmmmm.

Thanks :)
Keep in mind that some of these tracklistings probably include crowd noise. These do not:
6/7/05 Cat's Cradle- 8:20
10/19/05 Toronto- 10:08
10/26/05 Cincinnati- 10:21

11/23/06 Louisville 10:06
6/4/06 Mountain Jam- 9:58
Bonnaroo 05: 8:01 (with sax solo at end)
We definately need an update on this thread. I heard a lot of talk of the new extended version of Dondante and I thought you just meant the small changes like I heard at Radio City. Then I listened to Atlanta this morning. Holy Crap! I'm sure there are several other great ones from recently but I have not heard them yet so SHOW ME YOUR DONDANTE!
I'm going to call this fall 08 style a new version, V3, but it still falls just shy of the Fela Kuti version in Indy but still an amazing 13 minutes 54 seconds!

OK we have a new all around winner. Louisville - Waterfront Park 8-16-08 weighs in at a massive 14:36!!!!!! Probably, unbeatable.
Still, give Atlanta a listen, the sax at the end is different and a real treat!

I was thinking Louisville 8-16 had to be up there. No time for Philly yet though.

yeah, it was. what a great show.
bh, i will posit that there is now a V3! (hushed murmurings from the crowd)
at the berkeley and l.a. shows the instrumental portion ramped up into this crazy speed version of the song. in berk. i thought it might be a one off, but they did it again in los angeles.
fyi--this makes the song quite a bit shorter.
and that louisville dondante still has my head spinning. YOW! :o

Just went straight to Berkeley on the archive and damn!!!! I think we are getting version 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7! The beginning is actually slower I think, and then yes, at the 8 minute mark, it goes fucking bannanas!
Ba-Ba-Bannanas-nanas.
So now, I would say Louisville, Atlanta, and Berkely are all significantly different. Amazing. All equal in their awesomeness. Son of a bitch, now I'm going to have to listen to all of them. ;D

;D indeed!
I got Philly 9-05-08 clocking in at 14:15 (with some crown noise added in), but I think the middle is a little different from the others I've heard.

Yes! Thanks Tenn. I think that was the first time we heard the "Neil Young"ish rif in the middle. Repeated again in Berkely?

there is a Fela Kuti Dondante from late nite High Sierra show in 2006, 6/30/06 I believe. Sick stuff. Love how the change in drumbeat "inverts" the whole thing.

Thanks! Do you have a track time? That show has never made it to the archive. Just the 7/1/06 main stage show is on there.
i don't have a track time or the show. not sure if it was taped.
It actually just showed up:

why are you getting so technical with this track. Let it be played and or extened into however long a jam the band chooses. That is what love about how dondante has grown

stick a round ;)

I think we all love the fact that the band mixes it up so much which is the very reason we get so technical about the song. Do you need to know the name of an incredible wine to enjoy it? no. But for some people it makes it more enjoyable.
I hate to say this since I was at the Louisville show, but I think we have a new winner.
The High Sierra Late Show 06 version is 14:50. There's about 10 seconds of crowd noise, but that's still longer than da ville. and it is definitely a Fela Kuti version. I think I'm going to use this version for the covers comp from now on. and here it is:

Quotewhy are you getting so technical with this track. Let it be played and or extened into however long a jam the band chooses. That is what love about how dondante has grown
Well yes, I do tend to get overly technical about some things, it's just the way I am about things I love. I understand if you just want to let it be what it is. It's just a jam after all. My original intent was just to use track time to help me figure out which versions might be different so I don't have to listen to every single one!
However I'm not sure why you would say "let it be played and or extended into however long a jam the band chooses." I didn't know I was somehow prohibiting them from playing it however they like. In fact, I thought I was encouraging it. :-/
Thanks for checking the High Sierra Dylan, and the link. We have a new winner!
Yes! So glad this High Sierra version is getting its due. It was sick that night. One of the best shows I have ever seen them play. Sooo much room to dance in an old barn starting at 2 in the morning or so. Great stuff. Rapid fire link, how do I download?
oh. i got it. duh. thanks.
yah man no hard feelings, dondante is one of my favorite mmj songs, i hope they play it for a half hour on NYE ;D
These boards used to have lots of cool discussion/disection like this thread.
So, fast forward 13 years.....
Anyone know the longest Dondante?
Atlanta fox on the WF tour is still my personal favorite. Heavy metal machine!!!

Red Rocks 2016? Port Chester 2012?
RR 2019 was a hair under 27 minutes.
RR 2016 around 16 minutes but that 2012 cap show was right at 25. Didn't realize they stretched it out that much until that far back.

Huh, I had thought one of those performances topped 30 minutes. The 2011s were insane - Lollapalooza had a great one.
My Dondante has to be Red Rocks 2012. Everything Changes at the end was the moment I truly understood the song. Sort of what Jim did with Where to Begin in Charlotte.
This is one I always come back to. This clip isn't starting halfway into the song, they began the song with the end jam and came back around to the beginning. Have they ever done this any other time?
my favorite is from 9-13-2012 at the wiltern in la. 21 minutes. the beginning is unreal, people shrieking on the audience tape.
check out the 'i think i'm going to hell' right before it too.
here is the wiltern show on archive.

good recording, killer show top to bottom.

Wow, that is a very slick version. Wonder how they decided to change it up?
I think the longest are:
NYE 2017 Denver 26:57
&
RR2019 27:13
lucky to be at one of those
Any longer than that??
i'm looking desperately for a longer Dondante...that's pretty sick to be able to say I went to one of the longest ones, I didn't think that would be the case as I've only seen the band and Jim total 7 times.

Love this version. May be my fav of the ones that I've witnessed.
2015 RR Dondante was great when Jim walked back behind the stage and was playing to the giant red rock wall
This most recent Charlotte Dondante was wild because Jim was singing (mumbling*) the lyrics to Where to Begin during the jam
But that 2019 RR Dondante was a Willy Wonka in the boat on the chocolate river in the tunnel trip of a song
the Cap Dondante from 2012 is a beast. Near or over 25 minutes. I'll be honest, I prefer Dondantes in the 15-18 minute range. I think the longer ones can get too "noodly" for me.

I have 41 versions of Dondante in my iTunes. The five longest are:
26:47 2019 Red Rocks
25:07 2012 Port Chester
23:09 2015 OBH
22:42 2018 OBH
20:03 2012 Tokyo
The shortest version I have is a 3:00 Jim solo version from 2018, Capitol Theater as well.
there's definitely something to be said about recency bias, but the version in charlotte last week really stands out amongst my favorite i've been in attendance for. it clocked in right around the 20:00 mark and went to some super interesting places, the where to begin vocal tease during the end jam was incredible.
Some of the ones mentioned recently:
NYE run 2017: https://relisten.net/mmj/2017/12/29/dondante?source=100611
RR 2019: https://relisten.net/mmj/2019/08/02/dondante?source=185050
Japan 2012: https://relisten.net/mmj/2012/03/29/dondante?source=61017
i believe this is the first time I've listened to that Japan 2012 Dondante. After getting past some early chompers, its a real solid recording and version, pretty fast in the jam after 10 minute mark. Fucking a, 2012 ruled.
The shortest version I have is a 3:00 Jim solo version from 2018, Capitol Theater as well.
Theres another solo Jim Dondante that clocks in at 2:24

RR 2016 is my favorite recorded version I've heard. I've only gotten one live version from the five shows I've been to, bad luck!!
Crazy thing about RR 2016 is that, as good as that Dondante is I'd still take the Steam>Only Memories>Steam>Phone from that show over it. Such a great show

You're right I was. Was conflating those two shows. And then jam from Steam straight into PWW, so good
