rad.  lucky NYCers.  http://www.bookeaters.org/

and demetri martin is hilarious if you haven't seen him before.

from http://www.826nyc.org/

"826NYC and The Bowery Presents present REVENGE OF THE BOOK EATERS, a one-night-only event that brings together some of our most celebrated comedians, writers, and indie-rock songwriters for a rare evening of intimate performances, including FEIST, A.C. NEWMAN (of The New Pornographers), JIM JAMES (of My Morning Jacket), GRIZZLY BEAR, SARAH VOWELL (best-selling author and This American Life contributor), and DEMETRI MARTIN (Daily Show regular, comedy superstar). The night promises once and for all to try to settle the debate: words or music - which is better?"

Thanks 4 the tip V man. Hmmm ticketmaster gave me this right now:

Tickets may not be available at this time. More tickets may become available later.
Tickets may not be available online just hours before an event occurs.
On rare occasions, tickets may only be available at ticket outlets or the box office.

No word yet when I called the Beacon box office. Shit, I hope I don't get shut out.

Thanks again for the tip.  :)

I've got two tickets to this and cannot make it. Thought I'd put it out there to you folks before trying ebay or craigslist. Will take what I paid for them ($50 each plus stupid ticketmaster fees).  Send me a pm if you want them (would rather get rid of them as a pair). Could meet you in ny to hand them over or mail them.

Oh, and they are orchestra row v,  seats 105 to 106, so it's in the center.

That show was off the hook!  The giant drill coming down through the ceiling almost got me, but luckily I was spared and can live to see the Jacket another day.

I think this was the setlist:
What was the song Jim opened with (I am Wonderful)????
Bermuda Highway
What A Wonderful Man
Gideon
Anytime

although...the one thing that did annoy me was how the Comedian host just walked off stage without introducing Jim James.  GRR.  Everyone around me was like "who is that?"   and I told them Jim James, but still NOT fair!  James didn't get the recognition he or MMJ deserve!  >:(

Agreed, b4 Jim was to start Dimitri Martin the host (funny as hell) got heckled from someone in the balcony. Something like 'We're waiting for the bands" Where D.M. replied something like - Hold on Asshole I'm hosting this thing- Jim went to high five Dimitri and I think he took it like he was ready to perform so he walked off b4 introducing Jim, I guess a tense moment. Jim informed the crowd that he was just agreeing with the host after the first song. All in all a great set and evening!!!  The new song, Gideon  :o and the omnichord were treats. Grizzly Bear were wonderful as well ( a couple of them were watching Jim's set from the side of the stage). My pics didn't turn out too great but my gf got some good ones. Colleen, care to share?

see, hipsters, you betta recognize...

http://www.brooklynvegan.com/archives/2007/08/revenge_of_the.html

"Next up was My Morning Jacket's Jim James, and some say he stole the show. It's true that he probably should have played last. Alternating between guitars and that electric-thingee (with drum beats), he played a bunch of My Morning Jacket songs I recognized (set list anyone?) - all sounded awesome. You can tell that he's the frontman of band who soon-enough will - and is well-suited to - be headlining stadiums across America (if MMJ haven't already)."

He did the most unbelievable version of Gideon I have ever heard (and I have heard a ton of them). I had goosebumps through his entire set...and the new song, "Wonderful, The Way I Feel" was superb!!

He completely stole the show, was not even close.

Jim James is God

A nice review from Stereogum
http://www.stereogum.com/archives/concert/revenge-of-the-bookeaters-2007-literally-awesome.html#more

"Demetri Martin was an inspired host choice because a) this was a literate crowd, and Demetri loves his wordplay; and b) this was a benefit, and Martin's an appropriately nice guy. Unless you're heckling him. During a great bit on wondering if he could put an exclamation point in a sympathy card and make it appropriate ("The best I could come up with was 'Sorry for your loss ... God! ... Why!'") a heckler yelled from the rafters "Put the bands on!" After a robust round of boos, Demetri went off:

Just so you know, they're not booing me; they're booing you for being such an idiot at a benefit concert [cheers and applause]. You want the bands to come on? I want the bands to come on, too! I'm telling jokes so they can set up behind me. What do you think, I came down here and was like "Hey, I know you're getting all these bands to play, but do you think I could go out there to tell two minutes of jokes in between to piss off the asshole in the balcony?"

Served! From the shadows behind him, Jim James came out and offered his support to Martin with a loving pat on the shoulder. Demetri hung his head and sauntered off. "Fine, you win..."

"I was offering encouragement to Demetri, not asking him to get off!" Jim said as he sidled up to the mic. No purple tux this time, just a nice suit and 15 minutes of straight shivers. After an awesome, acoustic "Bermuda Highway," JJ busted out that wacky Omnichord contraption (like at Angel Orensanz last year) for "What A Wonderful Man" ("Some people think that song is about God, but it's not."). And after a funny and perfectly random story about a hole in the roof of a church in Louisville, KY (Jim bookended it hilariously with "Some people think this next song is about God, but it's not"), Mr. James tore down the Beacon with an instantly classic "Gideon." The night's longest and loudest applause, it's most talked about post-show moment, and probably the greatest single outbreak of goosebumps we've had this year. Next time you see him, buy that man a drink. Somebody, please: YouTube."

I get the goosebumps just reading it.  I wish I lived in NYC.

My Morning Jacket's James offered an especially poignant, if not bizarre, performance. His pure voice was showcased on songs like "Bermuda Highway" and the new "Wonderful (The Way I Feel)," while "Anytime" and "What a Wonderful Man" were performed on an Omnichord. "Some people like to think this next song is about God," James quipped before howling through "Gideon," "but it's not." He then inexplicably ran back and forth across the stage before hastily packing away his gear

In fact, the hulking, historic Beacon Theater out-scaled most of the performances. Only James rose to the occasion. A reverb junkie, to be sure, he relished the acoustics, ripping into "Gideon" like a Southern-fried Roger Daltry.

http://www.cinemablend.com/music/Concert-Review-Revenge-Of-The-Bookeaters-6039.html

By Amy Novak: 2007-08-27 17:12:08

Concert Review: Revenge Of The Bookeaters It was packed house last night at the legendary Beacon Theater for the Revenge of the Bookeaters show, a benefit concert for the 826NYC program. Knowing a little about the program going in, I was blown away at the enthusiasm and celebrity support for this non-profit, whose main agenda is helping kids ages 6 to 18 with their creative writing skills. They do a lot of tutoring, programs that help teachers teach good writing and even do a summer filmmakng workshop. The acoustic show was hosted by comedian Demetri Martin, the hilaroius writer best known for his work on The Daily Show. A.C. Newman, the frontman for the New Pornographers, kicked off the show with some of his solo work. He was followed by Brooklyn's own Grizzly Bear, Jim James from My Morning Jacket, Feist and Britt Daniel of Spoon fame.

There's nothing an indie artist loves more than the chance to collaborate with other indie artists. And to do it acoustically, in a setting where there's relatively low pressure to play their hits (such as a benefit show) is basically a dream come true. That's why I was so sure that this show was going to annoy the hell out of me. But each artist seemed genuinely honored to be a part of the event and the amount of "sadness for an unrequitted love and/or unrealized dreams" themed songs were kept at a minimum. Jim James moved the crowd the most with his powerful and emotional vocals on four songs. Llikewise, Feist's perfectly pristine voice on a slow piano tune resonated in the amazing sound quality of the Beacon and seemed like it could be a hit off the sountrack in Heaven.

Toward the end, Sarah Vowell, mostly known for her monologues on the the public radio program This American Life and who also sits on the 826NYC Board of Directors, spoke about the importance of encouraging creativity and even showed a few highly-entertaining trailers from the Filmmakers workshops, completely put together by kids. But a sure highlight of the night was when Feist read aloud two short stories written by second-graders. They were so ridiculously awesome that the audience didn't stop laughing the entire time. Another sure highlight of the night seemed out of place with the vibe of the show, but was fun nonetheless. One ungracious audience member started an ongoing fued with Martin, who was telling jokes while each band set up, by shouting loudly, We don't want to hear you, we want to hear the bands!" The audience booed wildly and Martin quipped, "Just so you know asshole, they're not booing me, they're booing you...for being a fucking dick at a benefit concert." But hey, it's for the kids.

Not according to BH's spreadsheet.

It was first played at a Jim James solo show on June 3, 2007, Rudyard Kipling, Louisville, KY.

I had tickets to this show, but had to miss it because my daughter had a fever.  AND I wasn't on the forum yet, so didn't even have anyone to give them to who would have enjoyed them.  Ah, the joys of parenthood  ;)

Also, looks like "What a Wonderful Man," and not "Wonderful" right?
