from the note on the homepage:
"...we invite and encourage everyone coming to the new years show to "dress to tha nines," in your finest and classiest party wear: suits/tuxedos, frilly dresses/luxurious ballgowns, top hats and canes, 2009 glasses, etc - as we intend to really "class up the joint" and celebrate the monumental year that 2008 was, whilst gazing forward to the thrills and chills that 2009 will hold."
Now, where'd I leave my ballroom sneakers?
This is making me nervous--I don't think I own anything that would qualify as "black tie."
i was hoping that night would end w/laughter, tears,...and vomit---how can i do that in a 'ballgown'? :D
Just saw the message from "Yim Yames" on facebook. The group Im going with had planned to wear tux's/formal wear all along; in fact GivenToFly started a thread about it back when the show was announced. This is going to be fucking awesome...I NEED this show. Since "my" leg of the summer tour ended with the Philly show Ive been in some serious Jacket withdrawal :D
THIEVES!
I'm hoping to wear a fifties-style prom dress. We shall see.
No heels though, I'm gonna need to rock harder than heels will allow ;D

Agreed! No heels...a twisted ankle would suck. This is going to require some thought because wearing a dress will be fun, but the shoes can't interfere with my killer dance moves.
Ha. :)
I love the fifties-style dress idea!
Yes! I brought my elbow length opera gloves to RCMH, because I felt that it was the right thing to do at such a classy place. I am glad I opted out, because now I have the right thing to wear. But shoes, yes ladies, shoes are vexxing for me too. And I am in the footwear biz. And jackets and layers and all that. I must put on my thinking cap!
this sucks. i want to go but since it's nye i'm not allowed to go and i'm so close. this whole dress thing is prob another indication that they'll film this we makes me feel worse. dammit.

Why aren't you allowed to go?
i wore a dress to the prom show.
went to a thrift store, bought a 50's party dress on it's way out. i knew that the thing would be a wreck by the end of the night.
worked out just right. the lace was decimated, it was covered in beer. and i wore sneakers. ;)
perhaps i'll just rock the tuxedo t-shirt. :)

Im considering the tuxedo shirt myself. Lord knows it'll be hot hopping around in a coat/vest/long sleeve shirt. Decisions, decisions...
So much for dressing as peanut butter, pudding, or surprise. ;)
Gotta find something to wear that's easily modifiable so that I can look presentable at the MMJ show and not look out of place at the aftershow. Though hopefully, by 2 am most folks will not really be able to judge presentable or out of place. :D

I dont imagine too many things look out of place at 2 AM New Years Eve in New York City lol
Ah yes...We'll be dressed to the nines, kids! Tophat, tails, a cane, white gloves and a fucking monocle...definately will be wearin' some tennies though. Gotta get down...gotta get down!
I think the girl's gonna do the 1920's thing...she'll be wearing sneakers too ladies. Hope to see you guys dressed up!

Another vote for no heels!
I am going to wear a brides maid dress that I have only worn once. It's all purty and poofy! I seriously cannot WAIT!!!
God, I love this band! Makes me want to cry sometimes (in a good way).
I'm going to wear my birthday suit! :D

I think I solved the shoe problem...for $10. I am going to rock out in these little numbers, of course with gel inserts and some mole skin on those key blister points:
http://www.oldnavy.com/browse/product.do?pid=613695002&tid=onfr1r
But no prom dress for me.....never wore a traditional one anyways. I found a really comfortable shift dress covered in sequins. I think sparkly counts as to the nines, right?

i love those, wizz--i just want to be propped up higher so i can see over people in front of me --oh and in case jim sees me and pulls me up to dance just like that bruce springsteen video. i will def. consider those flats and i'm not wearing a frilly prom dress either
I couldn't beat the $10 special ;)

shoes...arghhh...thinking about bejeweling a pair of sneakers. Gotta be able to jump up and down with out falling over or hurting my toes. ;D as for the dress, i'm thinking pants...a dressy black pants suit. going for warmth and utility. :)
And, my tickets for the show arrived!!! Where's the count down clock?

i can! that's a good idea---i'm going to take down my football calendar and put up a NYE calendar.
yeah not sure i'm feeling the dress, too---i might have to dress to the nines in pants---jim is forgetting how cold it will be for those of us that don't have beards.
I actually have 2 outfits prepared. Because I am torn on this issue. Both are festive. But the dress is fancier than the pant/sequin top combo. I was thinking that I would wear tights/leggings with the dress and be able to take them off in the show. I get very overheated when rocking out so I worry about being too warm. The pant idea would be warmer outside....but maybe too hot inside? What is the airflow like in MSG? I got really overheated at the Seattle show and I had on jeans and a short sleeve top....but I was really comfortable at RCMH in a dress.
Anyone know if they'll have a coat check? I sure hope so.
I wanted to wear a pirate outfit. Think I still might. Arrggghhhhh!
QuoteAnyone know if they'll have a coat check? I sure hope so.
that is a great question! i doubt it but that would be great. i'll try to find out tomorrow

;D

Yeah, the cold outside/hot inside issue is key to the outfit. The leggings idea is a good one!
Per their FAQ, MSG doesn't have a coat check :P Man, that would've been ideal; I'd have checked my heels and changed into Chucks!
That sucks... Now I'm probably not going to wear a coat.. I don't wanna be carrying it around. Maybe if I was going to be in a seat that would be a different story... Jeez...It's gonna be cold.
Maker's Mark makes for a badass coat. Just layer it on, one after the other and you'll be running naked thru central park to cool down before the sun rises on 2009.
Yes I was thinking that, but I don't want to be too wasted for the show... want to be able to hang out afterward.. I'm probably going to make brownies though.. every time I saw MMJ, I had eaten brownies... haha gotta keep it going... :D
I'm 6 foot 7. Would it be outrageous if I wore a top hat? And would it be outrageous in a good way or bad? (I could, of course, take the hat off during the show.)

Buy something you don't care about. I am thinking of hitting up the ole' army/navy store for some cheap, yet warm goods. You can always find these for less than $30:

Oh...and the key is to have a group, whether friends or strangers. Then you start the coat pile. Works everytime.
jj/yy requested tux and froufrou dresses - well, if he'll wear his frock and tiara i'll wear mine. be cool if everyone came in drag- beard and all. love to see jj in a pair of jimmy choos - time to play.

I doubt there is a coat check at MSG. It would be a Zoo if they did have one. I think your best bet is to suck it up for the cab or subway ride to MSG and be comfortable once you get in there. Just my two cents. I am going to wear a suit or a tux but I want to rent a funny top hat or bow tie to get more into the festivities! Can wait!!! :D
my pimp hand will be in full effect.
My shirt/dress is going to be sleeveless... oh well.. Not like I never jumped into snow naked before... :-?
my entourage is going to look so damn good! See you in the pit!

Exactly.
You still have a few weeks to find someone to take the ticket off your hands. Try to find someone on the board here that is without ticket or has a friend that needs one. And definitely don't worry about going solo -- a lot of people are going alone. I've heard of a meetup prior to the show, which I'll be at alone (and other people will be, too!) since my friend won't be in the city until she gets off work...almost show time. I hate doing stuff like that stag, but I'm excited to hopefully meet new people. Plus if I decide to wear heels I'll be above the 6'0 mark (yikes) so we can talk about the poor people who have to stand behind us at the show.
:)

Y'all can definitely stand in front of me...I get a cramp in my neck if I have to look up to see the stage, so I won't be riding the rail. :) Midway back will be perfect. I wonder if they waitresses will work the GA section?
And, I think I'll be wimping out on the dress/gown too. It's just a little too uncomfortable for me for MMJ on NYE.
Shorties, get there early ;D
I'm not afraid to rock in formal attire. If the Jacket can do it, so can we!
Anybody gonna rock a Texas Tuxedo? I'm thinking about it.

It's okay...you can still rock the 2009 glasses! With this recent cold snap in Oregon I realize that I am a wuss. So it is looking more and more likely that I will be going for a festive-rock-n-roll approach to my attire. But I sure as hell will be rocking some sparkly 2009 glasses! And a sparkly shirt! And a fabulous and amazingly warm fake fur that is oh so Dynasty-esque...I love it! But probably pants...not a ball gown. Sorry boys...it gets messy and crazy down in the dancing zone ;)

I'm reconsidering the outfit as well. :-/ I'm leaning towards pants and a comfy top and some funky accessories. I just can't do a dress with traveling in and the cold. Plus, what I wear that night is the only outfit I'll have. It'll be the train ride home of shame back to PA. Ha.

a tux is a bit uncomfortable at best, the whole dress and heels thing is a nightmare. i don't expect a guy to understand. if it was a dinner party, it's one thing but an 8 hour night of boozing, standing on your feet dancing, slapping high fives to fellow forum members, spilling beer on yourself, possibly vomiting, yelling happy new year at midnight and crying every time you think JJ looks at you, these are NOT easily done in a ball gown. just sayin...
Now everyone seems to be coming back to REALITY.
We are attending a ROCK SHOW! Not a New Years party at a Country Club
The concept is unique and sounds like fun, but drinking, smoking and dancing in a 2'x2' area while the temperature in the Garden rises to 85 degrees only sounds like fun in a t-shirt, jeans and sneaks.
That's what I'm sportin. :)

I was in the GA section at MSG on Tuesday (for Neil Young!!!) and the beer guys only came around during the opening acts and between sets. Not during the main act. You'll want to get a few beers before MMJ comes on if you want to keep you buzz going and not have to go out to the concourse for beer.
That only leaves the problem of having to pee!
As for the coats, I just layered and brought a backpack to stick my jacket and such in. They allow you to bring in bags, but search them. Make sure your "sneaky" items (flask, grass, etc.) isn't in your bag.
It was a big party on the floor for Neil Young. People were blazin up left and right!
To the 9's people!!
My girl just bought a full length black strapless ball gown, it's insanely glamorous! I'm rocking a full black suit, black top hat, white tie! As long as your rocking comfortable shoes it's all good.
Whatever you do....take care of your shoes.
To the nines! I'm not wearing a gown, but I will be in a dress for certain.
j_rud, get yourself a monocle! On second thought, it'll probably be falling out all night.
Creative black tie, people! Converse makes some awesome metallic and glitter Chucks. ;)

after 911 and the black out, not many women (no matter what the occasion) run around NYC in non comfortable shoes unless they have another pair somewhere on them. just FYI (unless your hotel or car is central) -debbie downer :-?

Whatever you do....take care of your shoes.
This is all you really ever need to know.
I was sold on the dress idea at first and when I went to see Bon Iver this past Monday I realized how sweaty and disgusting I get in crowds. Granted, this was a tiny venue with practically no circulation, but I was uncomfortable in jeans and a t-shirt. The dress I bought is semi-clingy and I know that with the doors opening at 8 and probably being there until 1:00ish I will be ready to kill someone if I am uncomfortable. I'm opting for a lacy tank with a thin t-shirt (which can come off in event of being overheated), black dress pants and a boatload of accessories. If the camera pans across the floor (hey...I'm hoping this will be taped) they won't see below my shoulders anyway.
And I agree with Debbie...I mean Penny. Comfy shoes are a must.
Sorry for all the details but I don't want to seem like a party pooper.
I'm hoping I can pick up some sort of 2009 hat or headband thing when I come into Penn Station.
My GOD I can't wait.
uncomfortable at best...shoes...hot....sweaty...men dont understand...I dont even want to hear it. As far as Im concerned this is a decree come down from on high...

i finally have time to go shopping tomorrow so we'll see---for those of you staying at a hotel in the city, the whole wardrobe thing won't be a prob. for the rest of us, commuting will be a b*tch. BUT I WILL STILL TRY TO PLAY ALONG AND FIND SOME "NINES" ATTIRE THIS WEEKEND. i don't want to be underdressed if i stand next to J rud in a picture or something.
Just get yourself some press-on mutton chops and you should be fine next to j_rud. ;D
Yeah, we have to get on the subway which is why I'm reconsidering a full-length dress. I certainly wouldn't wear anything you don't want dirty or ruined, but I think it's possible to get festive and fun without too much hassle (and without donning stilettos)!
Indeed! That's where the aforementioned gold sparkly Chucks come in...
My dress is tea length, so I think I'll be fine unless I fall into a snowdrift or something. Which is entirely possible.

one great thing (or bad depending on how you look at it) is the lack of snow in the city no matter what..it melts so fast--no snow drifts but maybe mudsliding or slush messes
Oh thank god.
Im only joking with you guys, I know everyones circumstances will be different. Comfort is definitely of vital importance because if you arent comfortable you wont enjoy yourself.

The description kicks my ass too:
"Tired of wishing that you had a top hat made from a Heineken beer case? Shot down again by another hottie at the bar because of a lack of homemade beer-themed headwear? Bored of watching late night TV in only your underwear and nothing on your head? Win this auction and you can put these problems to rest once and for all. I made this hat a few years ago from a genuine Heineken cardboard beer case, some duct tape, and twine. I later added a piece of yarn as a chin strap to hold it in place. The head opening is 7" front to back and 5 3/4" side to side. It stands 8" tall. As far as I know, this is the only Heineken top hat in existence, thus equaling the Hope Diamond in rarity. This is what Abraham Lincoln would have worn, had cardboard Heineken cases and duct tape existed 150 years ago. It is in good condition, having only been worn a couple of times. The duct tape adhesive is a little dry, but it is still holding firm and the hat is in good structural condition. Bid high; get this hat in time for New Year's Eve."
I own a 3 piece bedazzled corduroy suit with a giant blown out afro wig :). Think this would be considered "to tha nines" or too disco? It's my personal favorite gear to rock out in, just not sure it fits the profile of the show. Comments?

Tear it up, Sumr! Sounds like get-up + converses is the way to go. Comfy & stylish :)
I shall be there, arriving on the 11hr train from NC :D
I think I am gonna wear some dress slacks, white shirt, tie, and maybe a sweater over the shirt. I figured I'd dress up a little since I'm not doing the tux thing.
Picked up my light purple polyester plaid suit yesterday.

I LIKE YOUR STYLE!!!!
i hit up salvation army and goodwill in hopes of a "good" suit. i was a little shocked to see they only had nice clothes - the few bad suits they had were not what i was going for.
i may throw on a shirt / tie. or i might wear the hefner costume i had for halloween. it's pretty comfy to wear your pajamas to a show :)
My vote goes to the Hef costume. Don't forget your boa ;).
This post raises a question...punctuation: before or after emoticon?
ooh, this is an entirely different idea!
boa and shirt / tie? it would be the last hurrah for it...
hef wouldnt wear a boa... and i'd vote punctuation before smiley.
edit: found an excellent shirt at Marshalls - its black with these shiny silver threads in them. and it was $7 in the clearance section - where the shiny things are :)
Just picked up a sweet yellow and blue suit from a thrift store.... 3 days holy crap
well i settled on a hot pink shirt that my niece picked out this past weekend--so if i you see a girl in hot pink, it's MEEEEE!!! come up and say howdy.
2 days!!!
Yay! I'll be in a silver sequined mini, so you do the same.
Looks like it's forecast to be a bit cold with some mixed precipitation, which kind of cramps my plan for the coat I'd hoped to wear. We'll see.

LOVE IT!
I'm auditioning NYE shoes tonight, but I think a pair of shiny purple Adidas hightops may make the cut.
I think I'm going to wear fabric boots (weather permitting) and then just take them off once I'm in The Garden, maybe stick some slipper socks in my bag!

the pink shirt is taken care of, the shoe issue still is not :-( didn't have time over the holiday to go shoe/boot shopping. i guess i'm going to have to suffer w/the heels i already have. sounds like a good plan you have, though.

I had every intention of snagging some kind of snazzy Chucks...and then had to rethink whether I wanted to look like a Christmas tree in head-to-toe sequins and/or glitter. Love (love!) heels...but there's no way I can do them all afternoon and for four hours on that unforgiving MSG floor. Well, not unless I want to be carried out by EMTs halfway through the evening, anyway. :)
Tell me guys, is this too ridiculous? haha

You can't see the white pants and I'm gonna rock my superstars cause they are comfy. What does everyone think? too ridiculous? Should I stick with the classic black blazer and such?
I think it's just ridiculous enough. ;) Love it! The hat is a nice touch, too.
Very nice. You're dressed up enough and you'll probably still be comfortable. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
Aww.. I like it alot.
Well thank you! Well my group is heading to the city tomorrow so I'll see y'all on Wednesday!!!!!! I know I don't post much but if you recognize me feel free to say hi! Safe travels to everyone! I can't wait!!!!!

Picked up my tux today...black shirt on black jacket/pants with a purple vest/tie. Also wearing a bowler hat and these Chuck Taylors...

Don't get cold feet! I am going to wear heels, even if just for dinner/Ginger Man/pre-show and then switch them out once the music starts for another pair I bring with.

Best $1.25 I ever spent. And seriously, I don't know how much yet, but I am going to send that eBayer some more $$ for such an ingenious use of alcohol art.
Spiffy shoes.
