Quote I walked in and ordered a Sierra Nevada and the 'tender looked at me like I was stupid.  I kind of took a look around, saw all the memorabilia, and then it hit me that I'm smack in the center of Anheiser Busch country.  I quickly ordered a Bud.

HA!  That sounds about right.  You just nailed the reason why I hate about 75% of the bars on that street.   There is a couple of places that have good beer and a brewery that makes their own beer, you just gotta know where to go obviously.   You be sure and let me know if you ever make it back!
I'm digging, digging deep in myself, but who needs a shovel when you have a little boy like mine.

QuoteLove this thread. So many beautiful pictures from so many places. One thing about us Jacket fans, we're definitely aesthetes.

And Ritchie, I lived right between Martinsburg and Shepherdstown in the panhandle. The place is beautiful and I'd probably have much more of an appreciation for the area now that I'm older and not a middle schooler who needs a mall to survive.

Where are you at? I've also got family about an hour south of Charleston in Ripley.

I live right smack in between Ripley and Charleston. About a mile from I-77. I live in a small little section of the county (can't really call it a town) called Kenna. I graduated from Ripley High School in 2006. Pretty cool.

That's god's country out there.  I spent nine years in Ashland, KY, which you all probably know is on the border of KY, OH, and WV.  I've spent 9 years in Ohio, 9 years in Ashland, and 9 years in Louisville.  I wouldn't call any of them home, though.

Hey aMD, are you currently in Ohio?  If so, whereabouts?  I've been in Athens since '92, aside from 3 years right after my wife and I finished our undergrad days.

No, I'm in Louisville now.  When I did live in Ohio I lived in Middletown which is North of Cincinnati and south of Dayton.  Nearly all my family lived there when I was a kid and now nearly all of them are elsewhere though we still meet up there for reunions and Bengal games.

I actually came REALLY close to going to OU for film school (grad).  I told myself if I got a scholarship of any kind I would go. I got in, but no scholarship so I stayed in Louisville and became a teacher. I'm glad things worked out this way.  But Athens is a great town though.

RE: TEO/freespiritedness - I was voted most free spirited in High School. lol.  You're right though, at the risk on being too ethereal I think my home is any patch of nature left untouched by man, although I'm finding a nice second home in well-manicured gardens as well.

Gotcha.  Yeah, Athens is a cool place.  My wife teaches 4th grade at one of the elementaries here.  There's just always something fun going on in a college town.  Lyle Lovett/John Hiatt tonight, Movin' Out (the Billy Joel stage production) next Wednesday, D1 sports, etc.
I'm a gardener myself, been double-digging beds for organic gardening for about 12 years now.  Hard on the back but really aerates the soil and gives root systems plenty of space to grow.

No shit! I double dug all my beds last October (fuck yeah it was hard on the back!) and put about 4" of compost in.  I'm also all organic.  I go to Starbucks almost daily for used coffee grounds, I make my own compost.  I have two new lasagna beds that I'm going attempt to direct seed this spring and I'm turning my deck into a container veggie garden (really looking forward to that).

The similarities are uncanny, no?  I remember you mentioned gardening in another thread fairly recently, but I lost track of it.  I think we probably would have made friends for sure if you had ended up in Athens.
I got into double digging my last quarter of undergrad.  I took an Alternative Agriculture class with a Plant Bio. professor who was just a nut!  The type who knew plants the world over that could give you a lift :o  We used a book by John Jeavons, can't think of the name of it right now.
Unfortunately, my double digs have taken place at about 6 different residences, from the three that we rented in NC, to another rental up here.  We finally bought a place in 2000 and I worked the next 5 years on getting multiple beds ready.  We then sold the place, moved again and I'm on year 3 here at the new place.  I have a helluva time with the deer though, they'e SOOOOOO thick here!  I put up a five foot fence last year that was no challenge at all, I would find out.  Still planning everything out this year.  Also have tried the container garden deck, but just don't get enough sun for anything but shade crops.
Great idea with Starbucks.  I had a great compost bin at the old place, haven't been up to the task here yet, but would like plan o get one started this season.
You also make sure you hit me up if you're ever back in Athens.

i live in tuscaloosa, alabama. i need to get a few pictures of my little house up here for your viewing pleasure; until then, i fear my meager descriptions must suffice.

my little house is in a subdivision around a little man-made lake. it is green and white and was built in the late 1950's; i adore its "americana" charm. it's cute and cozy. i have a small backyard in which the daffodils have already begun to bloom.

i am happy to be back in alabama (after living in kentucky for nearly 10 years). it's good to be back home.

Tuscaloosa is a neat place. I passed through there about 4 years ago on my way to North Carolina and enjoyed the architecture a lot. I also have a few close friends who went to college there.
Can't wait to see your photos!

QuoteI live in St. Charles, MO which is an old river town about 30 minutes from downtown St. Louis.   Here is a shot of downtown.  It's a pretty tame but nice shopping area with mostly crappy bars but a few good quality night spots....

Here is a Lewis and Clark statue down by the river....

One of the better bars.   The brewery where I first met TEO is right near here as well....

More downtown fun.....

Also most people don't realize that there are actually some very beautiful spots in Missouri and some really great parks.

We are going camping at Hawn State park in May or June...

We also have this amazing park called Elephant Rock that my kids love.  You can climb on all of these wierd giant rocks that "formed in the Proterozoic 1500 million years ago from a dome of molten magma. Nearly vertical fractures formed in the stone as it cooled, and uplift of the formation enhanced the fracturing. Eventually the overlying strata was removed through erosion, exposing the granite dome. With exposure, water and ice worked to weather and erode the surface of the granite and to expand the fracture joints. Eons of weathering produced the rounded boulders that are the park's signature."

All of my mom's family lives right outside St. Louis. Have you heard of Ballwin? That's where they are. And it's funny that you put up pictures of Elephant Rock because I saw pictures of my cousins yesterday from when they went there!

Oh yeah, Ballwin!    I used to live in an apartment over that way, and my office is only about 4-5 miles from there.

Elephant Rock is amazing.   It's like the perfect natural playground for kids.

I will post some pic soon though, maybe when it's a little warmer...
