I hate urban sprawl however I would much rather live in the heart of the city than out here in the boonies. However wW shouldn't ruin great hills like that for development. Leave great things like that hill along.

Not only did Nickelback punish football fans all over the world with their bombastic half-time performance at the Detroit Lions Thanksgiving game on Thursday, but they are also booked for a multi-song set at tonight's 99th Grey Cup CFL final. Yes, I said "multi-song" set.

It's as if they are trying to punish humanity for all of the Black Friday mayhem or something.

Their 3-song half-time show brutalized the senses from Newfoundland to British Columbia and up to the North Pole down to the Canadian border. I think they are Canada's worst music export, which includes the likes of Justin Bieber, Celine, Avril Lavigne and Gino Vanelli.

I so don't give a crap about Xmas this year. I normally don't anyways but I really have no patience for it this year. It's easily my least favorite time of the year. Can't we just get to New Year's now?

I understand how you feel. I haven't really enjoyed the holidays since my father died six years ago. I dread all of the family gatherings because he was the life of them. I get stressed out because I have to spend money that could be better spent elsewhere. I don't mind buying for my immediate family, but I hate the money I have to spend on the extended family. I wish they would quit exchanging gifts, but no one will take my suggestion. Also, the week after Christmas, I have to deal with my sister-in-law who comes from Boston and makes me miserable every, single, year. It's been especially bad the past three years. I would love to enjoy my time off from school, but the intrusive inlaws drive me crazy. I think next year I will go to the beach that week. I would go this year, but I've got some debt to deal with. Ahh, debt..... :-X

I am SO with you on this.  After years of having to buy presents for my brother's in-laws (??? I mean really ???) we are *finally* just buying stuff for the kids this year.  Maybe see if your family would be open to something like picking names next year?  I'm happy to buy for my immediate family too (and really just thrilled that we get to spend the holiday together) but it really gets to be a financial burden and a stressor to buy stuff for people you barely see and don't know very well.  And who needs extra stress around the holidays?
if it falls apart or makes us millionaires

We only draw for immediate family here. My wife and I are to the point that we do not even buy each other anything. If we get something it's for the house and it's something we both enjoy.

We've got three kids at home so most of the gift budget goes to them; however, I do try to get my husband something although it usually isn't extravagant. With our extended family, the kids draw names and then we buy the older ladies (no older men left)in the family something. I would really just prefer to get my aunts something and forget about the kids. They are about to graduate college except for my kids, but my kids would be fine with not exchanging - they never get anything that they care for (another reason why it is such a waste).  Going to visit them at Christmas is so much more stressful since I've had kids. My kids are bored to tears while we are there since no one is close to their age, and they only see these relatives at Thanksgiving and Christmas. If I could go visit my aunts without everyone else and all the hoopla surrounding the holidays, I would enjoy it so much more. I try to make a point of visiting with them when the rest of the relatives aren't around, but sometimes it is difficult to work that in with all the responsibilities of raising three kids, one of which has mild autism and one of which we adopted after having spent most of her life in foster care and then the other one just seems to want tons of attention because she's the youngest and an absolute mess.

My husband's family isn't so much into gifts as they are into spending 24 hours a day with the entire family for the entire week between Christmas and New Years. I like them, but I don't want to spend that much time with anyone, not even my own family. They end up fighting and getting angry with one another when what they really need are some boundaries and less time with each other. Each side has their ups and downs, I suppose. Regardless, I'd be so much happier if I could just go on a cruise for the entire time and avoid the holidays altogether. So much falls on me: cooking, cleaning, making everybody's holiday special and being Santa. Men have it so much easier at this time. They get to gripe about how much women spend and watch football. (I'm well aware that I'm over generalizing. That's just how it is in my marriage.)

My dog chewed on a memory card from my camera.  1700 or so pics on there that, like idiots, we haven't backed up.  These go back my second son's birth, so it's invaluable.  Has anyone ever had luck with data recovery from this type of thing.  This is PHYSICAL DAMAGE and not your regular corrupt hardware that can be easily recovered.  I've gotten a quote for $600 to do this, but I'm just wondering if anyone has any other suggestions?  Thanks in advance.

PS- anyone want a year old yellow lab?   :-\

That's horrible.  Depends on how chewed up it is.  There are some programs that my computer guy has used for me in the past:

I'm not saying it's easy...walking into sweet oblivion.

Thanks, people.  I found a company that will do it for $325.  No charge if they're unsuccessful. They ask for certain files that are most important and they'll work the hardest on those.  I'm going to give them the dates right around my son's birth and hope they get those.  Anything else will be gravy, I guess.  Very expensive gravy.  :-\
Lesson learned.

I feel your pain, JonT.  My dog is a little over a year old...not sure what breed, supposedly Chow/German Shepherd mix.  I can't leave her in the house alone at all.  During the day, I put her in the basement where there is nothing she can destroy.  She has to be chained outside while we eat, and she has to sleep in our room with us at night so she doesn't chew anything up...she never chews or does anything bad, really, as long as you're in the same room as her.

Last night we tried leaving our bedroom door open.  Not 30 minutes later, I hear a crunching sound.  She's chewing up the wooden handle of a steak knife.  Not a huge deal, but we had to lock her in the room with us again.  I let her out this morning for one hour or so and she slipped out of her collar and knocked a huge potted plant down the stairs.  She's chewed up DVD's, record sleeves, leashes, gloves, my mountain bike seat (brand new $1100 bike), garden hoze nozzles, broken out 5 windows.  She has stomach issues and constantly walks around throwing up (maybe 2-3 times/week).  She often keeps me up at night and wakes me up early in the morning.

I think next time I'm getting an old dog, lol.  Or at least a calmer breed.  I still love her though  :D

Sorry again to hear about your pictures.  I haven't lost anything nearly that valuable yet.  Reminds me that I need to get my butt in gear on getting all my files backed up.  Good luck getting yours recovered!
We could.

Ugh, thanks.  Our dog...  We had to put MY DOG down last November.  He had cancer.  We got that dog before we had any kids so he was our kid.  When we had to put him down last year, it was devastating for all of us but it was the hardest to see my son hurting so much.  We were watching a home video one night and the dog (Charlie) came on the tv.  My son jumped up and screamed, "Charlie!" and started petting the tv. Talk about a heartbreaker.  We had a new dog by the weekend.  Terrible decision on our part.  We weren't ready emotionally and our lives are just too busy now for lab puppy.  Anyway, our new dog Max is getting the shaft.  He is very smart and has the potential to be a good dog, but I just don't have the heart or the time to train him properly.

Good luck with your pup!

I've never lost a dog before, so I can't imagine...especially seeing your son like that.

My issues are probably due to lack of training, too.  She seems very smart...she learns new tricks in like 5 minutes, seriously.  But she just kinda does what she wants or has separation anxiety or something.  She usually comes back when called, but not always.  She follows me around the house like she's guarding me.  She's a good dog, just needs some training so I can leave her in the house unattended.  Not sure if it's just because she's a pup or what.  I often forget how young she is, since she looks like an adult dog...and she is, just a young, very energetic adult!  I've heard she probably won't calm down until she's 3 or so...

Man, I was in an (exact) opposite spot. When I was growing up, my first dog, named Charlie, had his life cut short by stomach cancer. One night I was really sick, and layer in my parents bed for hours why they were out doing something or another. Charlie was laying with me the whole time, which was weird cause he wasn't about laying. That night when my parents came home he isn't even get up to greet my dad, which was WEIRD. He went to the vet, and that was that.

Now, I live alone, took a cat out of pitty( I am not a cat person) and it turned out to be the most dog like cat in the world. If I'm home, she's on my lap, she sleeps in my bed, etc. very weird for a cat, but finally a pet that is as sweet as Charlie was.
