In-deed

Noticed that the first game I saw him play in...I guess Johnny is his kid or something?

I've decided to come out of retirement after a 15-year layoff and today I bought all new equipment (I gave away all my ancient stuff last week). I used to be a good player in my day, but I quit because I wasn't having fun. I found the prices of everything, including new Bauer skates, to be fairly reasonable.

Any other players out there?

Jaimoe, how much did it cost to get all geared up? I don't play, but I'll get out and skate and shoot around.

I findly found this, could be the most over-the-top game winning calls ever (it's from the radio), even though I'm on the losing side on this one, it's just funny...

I kept my old CCM helmet and elbow-pads (plus my old jersey and socks). So, the rest of my equipment came to almost $500 (with $100 gift card, which I used to get Bauer Vapor skates). It ain't cheap buying new equipment, but it wasn't as expensive as I thought it was going to be. I went with wood sticks, which saved me big money.

It seems every year there's talks of relocating a team, or expansion. I do like the even number of teams in the league, but I don't like the empty seats in Southern U.S. If you could relocate a team, which one, and what would your top 3 markets to move it to be?

I think locating to another US city would be ok, such as Seattle. But the idea of contraction wouldn't bother me either. There are three or four Canadian cities that could make a go of it in the NHL: Hamilton, another team in Toronto, Quebec City (could be sooner than you think) and Winnipeg (see Quebec City).

Hmm, contraction. I really don't think that's a bad idea. I've never heard Seattle mentioned before, but it makes perfect sense. When I went to Seattle the bars had bunch of hockey on. I heard someone bring up having another Minnesota team. Which I could see, but I don't think it would work. Hell, Florida has two teams. It seems to make more sense as a fan to have more Canadian teams than Southern US teams. Does to come down to Gretzky being so huge at the time, that the NHL thought they could move anywhere and it'd work?

Phil Kessel is doing work so far this year!

There was an arrogance and a want by the NHL to locate a team in Phoenix. The Great One couldn't even sell the game there - I know Bettman and the owners wanted more western US teams. If the NHL wants great fan support, great TV ratings in Canada and solid ownership, then locating another one or two teams in Canada is a nobrainer. However, will the fringe US fan like this idea and tune in to watch Minnesota play Quebec City? There has to be balance. Many Canadian fans don't care about the bigger picture (i.e., worrying about the US market), but if a team gets relocated, Seattle or even Vegas has to be an option. Seattle should be looked at since they don't have a basketball team but seemly love MLS. WTF is with dat?

.Walt

Well, you have me sold on Seattle.  I would rather watch a Edmonton vs Calgary game than a Phoenix vs Atlanta.

Good college hockey game tonight. U of MN vs MN State. Usually U of MN kick our asses, but tonight 3-1 at Mariucci . Now the game goes to Mankato, looking for a sweep! The Gophers haven't played very well, and I'd like them to get back on track, but not at MSU expense.

Yes, but you are a hockey fan and recognize heated rivalries, and really few in all of pro sports is more heated than a Flames-Oilers game, especially in the playoffs. I loved both teams since the early '90s, but never really was a fan of either in the '80s. The Leafs-Habs rivalry is embedded in the fabric of Canadian society. Gotta love other rivalries too, such as Bruins-Habs, Rangers-Isles, Flyers-Caps, Pens-Flyers, Canucks-Oilers, Bolts-Panthers (just kidding about the last one). Man, I miss the old Norris Division battles. Every team hated each other and it didn't matter if the Leafs played Detroit or St. Louis in the playoffs - seemingly year after year; it was always a war.

Hey US hockey fans. Are any of you planning on following the IIHF World Junior Championships? The US have a good team this year. I've been watching the Canadian tune-ups over the past week. Tonight "we" are playing the Czechs (3-1 Canada going into the 3rd period). Taylor Hall is playing great (he's the projected #1 pick in the 2010 NHL draft).

Maybe if it's televised, I think last year they had it on the NHL network. Would be very fun to watch, was last year. Let's agree on cheering against Russia!

The Winter Classic should be a fun game, if Philly would start playing like they're supposed to!

Check out TSN's website for all the details (I think NHL Network is carrying the games). TSN is the producer of the games internationally and domestically. The website also lists all the game coverages and nations' lineups (including club teams they play for): http://www.tsn.ca/world_jrs/
