I guess...size matters? :D

I had Wolaver Coffee Porter last night.

An excellent porter, but certain sips were too heavy on the sweet side. I'm a black coffee drinker, so I don't like sweet mixed with my coffee. But the coffee was strong.

So my Pops was back home last week, and one of the perks of seeing him is there is always plenty of good beer. He got in last saturday, were talking and watching a game, he goes outside to the car, and brings in 2 frosty Newcastles, succeeded by a few more rounds  :D :)

After much props on the board, especially from mjk and jaimoe, we were beerhunting in the distributor and I came across a case of Kronenbourg 1664, so I figured it seemed like as good of a time as any to give it a try. Despite it being French, they had it stored in the "Belgium" section, so it wasnt quite what I thought I was getting into. Despite that, excellent brew, one of if not the best German-style beers Ive ever had. That shit be smooth! To cap it off, we even watched Inglourious Basterds that night, and the case only lasted 2 days.

Then a couple days ago, he arrives at the house with a Belgian variety case from the Brouwerij Van Steenberge N.V. brewery in Belgium . We had planned on going to this Belgian bar in the Burgh, but since that wasnt in the cards, we got twice as much beer for half the price. I'd had a couple of them before - Augustijn Ale and Piraat Ale - both of which I highly recommend. They arent the most expensive Belgians, but they both remain 2 of my favorites and IMO the most bang for your buck. There was also 2 Bornem's in there, a Double Abbey and Triple Abbey. Double was a little darker and sweeter while the Triple was more in line with the Augustijn and Piraat but didnt have quite the same bite. My favorite of the bunch was Gulden Draak, which reminded a lot of V12, this Victory seasonal that they sell by the case in 32oz bottles. The only one that I didnt really care for was Bruegel Amber Ale, but thats more comparative to how good the others were than it being bad.

And finally, he bid farewell by getting me a case of 1 of my favorite beers I had when I last saw him in Montana: Widmer Brothers Drop Top Amber Ale. I didnt even know they sold the stuff around here, but its one of the tastiest, most refreshing and drinkable beers Ive ever tasted. A little lighter than you'd expect for an amber, with the perfect match of low hops and a citrusy flavor. Never had an amber like it. You gots to try this stuff if you never have.

...and that is my beer week in review  ;D

Where are you getting your hops from? I usually order from Johnny's or Burpees, but they don't have them.  I notice Pinetree does, I may order from them this year anyway.

I'm getting my garden plans together and trying to figure out whether or not I want to mess with hops.  I found a really good looking grow guide on the web.  It's a pdf, if you're interested send me your email.

Maybe I should have bumped the gardening thread.   :-/

Once we get back from Disney, we are going to map out the gardening. I searched a couple places and many said to check back in Feb or March to order rhyzomes. I'll PM you the address, curious to see the guide. Also, I have jalapeno and pole bean seeds to share with you (and Wizz).
