QuoteThe Science Of Sleep. Loved it. Love is hard enough when you're not insane. What do you guys make of the end? Did his dream represent that they will live happily ever after?

I think so. I mean, I don't know. I really liked this movie. Michel Gondry really made this movie seem... for lack of a better word... magical.

I really liked when Stephan told Stephanie that the thought her boobs were "friendly" and "not pretentious." If someone told me that, I would die. I would be all, "Perfect. Man."

I also watched Running With Scissors this weekend. I loved it. And the soundtrack was bitchin'.

i likes what i see, though you got alot of stuff im not crazy bout:
try Oleanna by David Mamet
some other directors to consider:
John Cassavetes
Sam Pekinpah
Harmony Korine
David Gordon Green
Terrence Malick
Alan Clarke
Paul Thomas Anderson
Werner Herzog
Jim Jarmusch
Robert Altman
Gus Van Sant
Wes Anderson

and i got alot more foreign director rec's if youre into that.

it's hard to go wrong with any of those, keep me updated on how it goes.

I know some of the gearhead movies are basically fluff but I love old cars and I'm a sucker for the big block roar, Arnold movies are basically empty too but the action is great.  I'm more of a sucker for David Lynch (and Frank Darabont--esp. Shawshank)--I have seen some stuff from most of the directors you list and will check out their filmographies on imdb--thanks!
Sittin' here with me and mine.  All wrapped up in a bottle of wine.

I definitely was amused by that movie, especially the over-the-top, hyper visual set design. However, Augusten Burroughs' memoir richly described the complex humanity of each person with intricate detail, yet the portrayal of every character in the movie was really shallow, smug and coldly detached. It seemed like the director was not interested in taking character development beyond the depth of caricature. Too bad because he had a really talented cast and great subject matter to work with.  I normally try to not compare movies based on books, but he is one of my favorite authors, so I was hoping for more.

I saw a couple of really minimal downer movies this weekend, but really liked them both quite a lot and would recommend them to you folks if you haven't seen 'em.

Half Nelson is about a self-destructive history teacher who is straightened out by one of his adolescent students. I almost didn't watch it because I was suspicious of the usually cliche inspiring teacher movies, but it was very powerful, unpredictable and extremely well-acted (especially by Ryan Gosling).

Forty Shades of blue is about a hot Russian immigrant woman living in Memphis with record producer, Alan James (Rip Torn) and a love triangle that ensues with his son as the third player. The actors clearly internalized their characters, and by getting inside the protagonist's head and internal anguish the story challenges how one might quickly dismiss the power of a beautiful woman on the arm of a legend. Warning: it is very slow moving for anyone who might have span of attention issues.

Everyone has a photographic memory. Some don't have film.

I really loved it, magical is the perfect word to describe it.

I love when he told her that she must have a large penis.  I really fell in love with both of those main characters.

me, too.  i liked it better than eternal sunshine (not that we need to compare, because we don't) because there was such an innocence about it.  it had magic and love and weirdos and humour.  it was so lighthearted.  i thought it was beautiful, and i was really glad to watch it. :)

Some comments above on Pans Lab...Everyone's been raving about it.

Anyone seen Inland Empire yet? Weird release schedule, but that's understandable.

I hate to compare the two as well, but I gotta go with Eternal Sunshine.  I have to factor in my absolute obsession with any and all things Charlie Kaufman when making any decision.

I would say this is my favorite movie from this past year.
I liked the part in his dream where he's playing in a band with Guy and the other dude and they're wearing animal costumes. I even purchased that song from itunes.
That's motherfuckin' John Oates!

QuoteThe New World again.

Malick is my favorite director and this remains the most beautiful film ive seen.
I like you taste in music and movies Harristrensky!
Terrence Malick is on of my fav directors. I could watch Badlands once a month a never grow tired of it & Thin Red Line still destroys me everytime I watch it. I've only seen The New World once, I need to watch it again. Have you seen Days Of Heaven? That was the only one that didn't blow me away, maybe i need to give it another go?

Crooklyn & Mo Better Blues this week for me, two early Spike Lee classics.
I still believe he's making a sequel to The Inside Man  :-/
God will forgive them. He'll forgive them and allow them into Heaven.....I can't live with that.

Days of Heaven is my favorite film. Its such a simple film yet so beautiful, and Linda Manz is great.

Science of Sleep was great and so was Mutual Appreciation. I thought Running With Scissors was horrible and dont know why I didnt just turn it off. Jesus Camp is the top comedy of 06 and For Your Consideration was a devistating let-down, Guest has lost it.

thats all for now, I may put Marie Antoinette on later, Ive heard mixed reviews.

As I mentioned in the above post I watched Marie Antionette and really enjoyed it. I thought it was good and maybe great to some but I am just not a fan of period dramas other than some about America. Though I did laugh very hard at the apparent shot of the converse allstars amoungst all the fancy shoes hahaha.

I thought it was alright.  To me the best part was the Kevin Shield's remix of "I Want Candy".
