Babel - excellent! I could have done without Brad Shit (I find him very difficult to tolerate after the whole Angelina Jolie thing) but fortunately he didn't spoil my enjoyment of the film. I particularly enjoyed the Japanese story + Gustavo Santaolalla's soundtrack. Fans of his soundtrack work (21 Grams, Motorcycle Diaries, Brokeback etc) really should check out his album Ronroco:
http://www.amazon.com/Ronroco-Gustavo-Santaolalla/dp/B000005J4W/ref=sr_1_2/104-4387495-7183101?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1178930157&sr=1-2
A couple of tracks from The Motorcycle Diaries on his myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/gustavosantaolalla

Am I the only one who thought Babel was highly overrated? The structure seemed forced. The movie pretended to be full of insight, but it didn't work for me. Pretentious might be the best word. In the end, I didn't care about any of the characters. Unlike Amores Perros, which was a lot better IMO.

The soundtrack was great though.

Heh, that's my short, pretentious and bad-written review  ;)

hey chills, totally agree about Babel ;)

everybody seen Zwartboek?
excellent old-fashioned entertainment from Paul Verhoeven.

Last night was The Science of Sleep, with Gael Garcia Bernal.  Funny, romantic and charming.  I thought it was great - if you like Amelie and films of that ilk, give it a go. I think it's GGB's first English-speaking role (and some French, too).
The trouble with the straight and the narrow is it's so thin, I keep sliding off to the side

God will forgive them. He'll forgive them and allow them into Heaven.....I can't live with that.

Definitely better than what you'd usually get for a kids animated movie but I'm not in any hurry to buy the soundtrack.

Holy masterpiece!!!

I loved it, and so did the gal I watched it with.  She loved the fantasy parts more and I loved the war/drama parts more, but as a whole what a wonderful film.  What a wonderful ending.

Having a bit of a run of cinema visits this month.

Saw Zodiac last night, at a BAFTA screening ahead of general release in the UK.  I'm a sucker for a serial killer flick.

A really great watch - although it was long (158 minutes according to imdb.com), it suited the timescale of the story.

Jake Gyllenhaal puts in a good performance, but for me the stars were the cops played by him out of ER and someone else (Anthony Edwards and Mark Ruffalo according, again, to imdb).  Robert Downey Jr puts in what can only be considered a cameo appearance as an alcoholic, drug-addled reporter.  I've heard of method, but surely there are limits...

I was really surprised by the intensity of some of the violence, given that it has a 15 certificate in the UK.  One of the murder scenes was really quite uncomfortable viewing.

I am alway suspicious of "based on true events" movies, but from what I can gather much of this is factual in terms of the serial killer's career.

Definitely worth a go, anyways.

The  Prestige--mucha mucha better than The Illusionist (tho' I still like the cinematography in The Illusionist).
Sittin' here with me and mine.  All wrapped up in a bottle of wine.

Oyster Farmer - brilliant film

Curse of the Golden Flower.  Lovely cinematography.  Also, even though it's not historically accurate (apparently), lovely decolletage.

From the makers of Hero and House of Flying Daggers.  Gong Li plays a blinder as the empress.  Some of the set-piece fighting scenes are amazing.

QuoteAnyone seen 'Old Joy' starring Will Oldham. It's playing tonight at the University of Louisville and I'm going. The sound track is provided by Yo La Tengo. Sounds good to me.

didn't blow me away but it's definitely worth seeing.
kinda awkward at times.
Old Joy - lovely to look at but definitely uncomfortable viewing at times.

The Devil & Daniel Johnston - one of the best music documentaries I've seen.
God will forgive them. He'll forgive them and allow them into Heaven.....I can't live with that.

Oldboy - excellent! Anybody seen the other parts of the trilogy?
