QuoteI really didn't like Girl With a Pearl Earring at all.  What'd you think?
(You'll have to let us know how you like Junebug.  :))

Beautiful to look at but ultimately rather dull. My wife enjoyed it more.

I'm looking forward to watching Junebug but have a big pile of unwatched DVDs from previous amazon orders (A Very Long Engagement, Oldboy, Boodbye Lenin! Spring Summer Autumn Winter & Spring) If I follow my own rules I have to watch those first...
God will forgive them. He'll forgive them and allow them into Heaven.....I can't live with that.

I saw the first silent movie I've seen in (I can't even recall) "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari."  It was brilliant!  I don't know if I can recommend it to everyone...well, if you can sit through "dead man" I think you can handle this...I didn't really like "dead man" but maybe it would be better on second viewing ???

I just saw two documentaries that are worth checking out:

!) The Aristocrats - this documentary is about an old vaudeville joke of the same name that still survives mainly between comedians offstage.  100 comedians talk about and do their version of this joke.  Everyone puts their own spin on the joke and the point of the joke is to create the most vile and and disgusting scene that one could imagine.  Comedians include Robin Williams, Steven Wright, Drew Carrey, George Carlin, Whoopi Goldberg, Kevin Pollack (who tells the joke as Christopher Walken), but no one can gross you out better than Bob Saget.  Great stuff.

2)  Walmart: The high Price of Low Cost - this one is disturbing.  It kind of sucks because now I can't go to Walmart anyome and everything is so cheap there!  However, I'd be thinking about slave dormitories in their stores in China and all over the world, the fact that employees are forced to work overtime for no pay in the US.  That the average annual salary of a worker at Walmart is around 12,000 and the national poverty line is at 17,000.  A good doc though...

I found the movie wildly inconsistent and tedious. Most of the takes weren't funny, just gross. The quick-cut editing was disarming too. Also, Gilbert Gottfried's take on "The Joke" was ruined since the directors (Penn & Teller) decided to constantly cut-away from Gilbert's monologue, leaving it disjointed and without flow. This was the biggest misstep in the movie since many of the comedians singled-out Gottfried's take as one of the most poignant and significant ever done.

I agree, Saget was the funniest because his take was the wildest and most imaginative. Sarah Silverman's take was pretty good too.

saw  "Beetlejuice" this morning.

antoniostrohs

Saw all these in the last week.
"Capote "                 Great story and great acting.Philip
                                   Seymour Hoffman became Capote
"The New World "  Slow moving but quite a beautiful film
with a poetic feel. I thought the actress who
                                portrayed Pocahontas was very stunning.
"The Matador "         Very funny dark comedy about a hitman
and a friend he meets while in Mexico. Pierce Brosnan
                                  has never been funnier.

Want to see all three of those movies. New World is due here in April/May, I have Capote on pre-order from amazon.

The Karate Kid 1 & 2 back-to-back.

walk the line - anyone else think the casting was spot on for this? i know joaquin doesn't really look that much like cash, but there were times when he'd turn his head, or something, and it was just so... cash.  the fact that they actually sang too was pretty impressive

Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter... and Spring.
A beautiful Korean film about life cycles & karma.

We went and saw Mrs. Henderson last night.  (Somebody wanted to see all the naked girls.)

It really really bugged the hell out of me.  Usually I can get into at least the fact that everybody's wearing fun costumes (or, in this case, not wearing costumes), but I was pretty turned off the whole time.  Hmm, turned off isn't the word in this case.

I just found it pointless for what it should have been.  Too much smart dialogue and wit for wit's sake.  It was actually more like a musical theatre show.

That's probably why I didn't dig it.

judi dench is usually great in movies - sounds like she wasn't enough to hold this one together for you EC!

The Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello
- aussie short film nominated for an oscar - bit slow moving, but the visuals are just great... fingers crossed for another australian oscar in animation this year!!!
anyone seen harvey krumpet?

The casting was spot-on.  I had no idea Reese Witherspoon could sing and she did a superb job acting as well.  I actually think Jouaqin looks alot like Cash.  He also was fantastic.  Phoenix was picked by Mr. Cash himself so no wonder the casting was spot-on ;)

tomEisenbraun

i just saw Capote. and it was damn powerful.
The river is moving. The blackbird must be flying.

Saw The Squid and The Whale last night (re-released for Oscar time). Anyone's parents get divorced in the 80's? This is your movie. Mine pulled the triger in 1977, but this was oddly familiar

nice soundtrack too...

I thought it was very well done. I thought the same thing about the way he sounded... there  were things he'd say or sing and it was "so cash".

I re-watched the Goonies. Can't ever go wrong with the Goonies.
Werr'd.

Totally.  I have seriously thought about buying it for everyone in my family.

I was watching it, thinking it was OK, but somewhere towards the middle (when the older kid goes to see the counselor) I got totally hooked in.

Amazing. I need to see it again, I usually miss a bunch of obvious shit.
