After seeing Eastern Promises I was wondering if any of you could point me in a direction with where to go next with Cronenberg. The only other film of his I've seen is The Fly.
That's motherfuckin' John Oates!

The next logical step would be to check out his previous gangster film: A History of Violence. I liked Eastern Promises better, but both are excellent.

There are various Cronenberg filmmaking stages, so depending on how adventurous and open-minded you are, you will be entertained with his newer stuff and shocked, creeped and grossed-out with his low-budget, yet extremely influential psychological- horror and just plain horror films. This won't mean much to you, but every film, even the set in London Eastern Promises, feels really Canadian. I can't describe why, it just is.

Early horror films that are fucking great are The Brood, Shivers and Scanners (Micahael Ironside rocks in this one).

Two mid career breakthrough films is the often studied Videodrome (with James Woods) and the Stephen King adaptation of The Dead Zone with Christopher Walken and Martin Sheen. I think you'll really like Dead Ringers, about twin gynecologists (played by Jeremy Irons) - it's still revered by many as his best film.

My thoughts on some of his later films: I'm not a fan of his version of William S. Burrough's Naked Lunch, but it is well done and a real mind-fuck. I've never seen Crash. eXistenze is an interesting sci-fi flick. Spider is moody, dark and depressing, but interesting with a strangely affecting performance by Ralph Fiennes.

No matter what, you can't go wrong with Cronenberg. He is one of the most daring and interesting directors of the past 30 years.

I think the reviews on AMG are fair and accurate:  http://www.allmovie.com/cg/avg.dll?p=avg&sql=2:86249~T2

Looks like Jaimoe has got this one covered  :)

I will say though that you could find yourself in a difficult position having started with 2 of his best films (Eastern Promises is his best IMO).
History Of Violence is good but I'm not sure how it will compare having seen EPs first. Dead Ringers is excellent but very dark, depressing even, depending upon your mood. Dead Zone is very good, so are Scanners & Videodrome. His earlier films are fun but they're probably rather dated now...I saw them years ago. I didn't care for Crash or eXistenZ.
God will forgive them. He'll forgive them and allow them into Heaven.....I can't live with that.

I'm not really into horror so i don't know how i'll feel about his early films. Scanners does sound interesting though. I do enjoy Stephen King adaptations, i'll probably check out The Dead Zone. I'll put Dead Ringers, and A History Of Violence on the list too.
thanks!

A good small film, but really accurate at portraying the desperation and addiction cause by gambling. Hoffman nails a late 70's early 80's Toronto accent. I don't know what the hell accent Minnie Driver was trying to do. I think it was an Ottawa Valley accent, but I grew up near that region and I can't do it, so her attempt is just plain wrong. Nice evil role for John Hurt too.

2 Days in Paris

Julie Delpy, how I love thee.  Adam Goldberg was enjoyable as per usual.  It was no Before Sunrise / Before Sunset, but I quite enjoyed it.

Any X-Files fans? I'm excited for the new movie:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0443701/
"Unlike the first X-Files movie, this one will not follow the alien conspiracy (aka "mythology") storyline. The movie is a supernatural thriller in the tradition of many of the show's "standalone" episodes."
glad to see them going that route.

An enhanced bootleg if there is such a thing. picture quality is excellent. Can't believe the show though, it's flawless with so much energy. Because the Night, Thunder Road, Jungleland, Racing in the Street, Prove it all Night and Kitty's Back, Independence Day all awesome. Have got Winterland, Paramount Night (Portland, OR) and the Roxy shows on CD but this show/DVD is something else...

My "This is England" DVD has a big scratch on it and won't play past 50 minutes.  >:(

Gonna have to send it back to Amazon.  Bollocks.

On the up side, just about to watch Romanzo Criminale and am currently enjoying series one of Green Wing.  :)
The trouble with the straight and the narrow is it's so thin, I keep sliding off to the side

Reality Bites

I enjoyed it.  My love for Ethan Hawke knows no bounds.  And I always enjoy Winona Ryder and Janeane Garofalo.  Ben Stiller...not so much.
