What Movie Did You Just See?

QuoteNow I never watched the show Star Trek or any of the movies, but is it just me or do the previews of this movie make it look like a cross between Jumper and X-Men more than a Star Trek movie?!  :-?

I'm excited about seeing the new Trek movie. I'm a fan of J.J. Abrams (Lost) and I think his reboot is a great idea. The film is not done like any of the series or films, which is fine by me. I do like all the series (and love films, The Motion Picture, Wrath of Khan and Star Trek VI), but love the original show and DS9 (one of the darkest sci-fi ever produced, that is, before the Battlestar Galactica TV series came along; not surprisingly by the same producer, Ron Moore).

I'm looking forward to the new Star Trek!

Doug McLure movies on youtube  :(

I want to see this (pointless & irrelevant info prt1: Kate is from my hometown of Reading!)

Alpha Dog - good cast (Emile Hirsch, Bruce Willis, Harry Dean Stanton etc) so I thought I'd give it a shot. Big mistake though unfortunately.
Full of unpleasant characters, none of who I cared for. Very disappointing role for Emile Hirsch too, especially after seeing him in the excellent Into The Wild. Sharon Stone was terrible! Anton Yelchin (soon to be seen in Star Trek) was good & the best thing about the movie was...Justin Timberlake?!!

Alpha Dog was 1 of those movies I went in thinking it would be terrible (target audience of teens, based on a true story, Timberlake, etc), but I thought it was okay. I know going in with low expectations helped out that aspect.

I thought Hirsch did as good as he could, but he's just too small and non-fear inducing to play a character like that whose supposed to be this bad ass drug dealer. I think I laughed when he took somebody through a sliding glass door. He'd be much better suited as a James Franco-esque Pineapple Express dealer than this type.

Timberlake was surprisingly good and likeable, and Shawn Hatosy was good. Who Im surprised you didnt mention is Ben Foster. He's impressed me in almost every movie I've seen him in, and thought he was great in this. He had some scenes that would've seemed over the top if most actors were doing them, but I found him believable thru the whole movie.

In the end, I think what hurts this movie as it continues is what these kids continue to do is just so stupid, you keep asking yourself when are they finally going to get some common sense.

I thought he was OTT to the point of being unbelievable. Sure, he played the strung out junkie well enough but the strung out junkie who goes Bruce Lee on a room full of guys?! Didn't work for me.

What have you seen him in that impressed you? Just checked his profile, maybe only remember him as Angel in X3. I've seen 3:10 but don't remember him from that...

I guess I believed the OTT scenes because other scenes in the movie (little bro comes over for shots and a pipe, breaks into Hirsch's house) where it made the "Bruce Lee" scene, office blow up, etc. seem feasible. He played the junkie aspect well, but I thought in all of the scenes where everything was going good, he seemed perfectly normal and I believed him/his character's ability to go from calm to chaotic in an instant. I thought he was probably the best part of the movie.

I guess I haven't seen him in as many movies as I thought, but I thought he was good in 3:10, I saw Liberty Heights awhile ago which was decent but dont remember much from it, but the 1 that stood out in my mind was Hostage. Now that I think about it, I think his role in Hostage may have even carried over to this movie as to why I thought he was believable.

Hostage was that 1 with Bruce Willis a few years back. It's good and definitely worth a viewing if you haven't seen it. Much better than you'd expect a semi-blockbuster thriller to be.

Haven't seen Hostage. Have you seen 16 blocks? I like Mos Def & David Morse, keeping thinking about renting it...

Hero (Ying Xiong) - don't know if I enjoyed this or not. Some beautiful cinematography/choreography but I'm just not too sure about people flying about all over the place + Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon did it better.
Certainly doesn't deserve the 8.0 it has @ IMDB & I definitely prefer Yimou Zhang's quieter films like The Road Home, Not One Less & Happy Times.

I actually enjoyed Hero and House Of Green Daggers over Crouching Tiger. All 3 are beautiful

After I saw CTHD, I pretty much quit watching those type of movies, because they just aren't as good, and any time I've tried to watch one since, I just wasnt too interested. I still love Kung Fu Hustle though. I've enjoyed most of the Jet Li movies I've seen (props to his Japanese name. I had no clue who that was that you listed), but they arent movies I try to see, moreso movies I'll watch if they're on. Never seen Hero, but it will stick in my mind because a friend of mine at college a few years ago left it at our place for like 2 months and ended up having to go to court because he didnt want to pay the insane late fees  ;D

16 Blocks was decent, but definitely not as good as Hostage. Go for Hostage first if you're going to pick between the 2.

I actually think that new movie with Mos Def, Donald Faison, Avon Barksdale, and Mike Epps looks pretty funny - Next Day Air,

Call me crazy, but it looks like a black comedy version of No Country for Old Men based on the previews  ;D

Well I had only seen the 30 sec. TV previews before that, but my thoughts were only confirmed.

Drugs end up in the wrong hands, those hands want to sell the drugs to make money. Those hands act like they dont have the drugs and the people who lost the drugs want the drugs.

I guess there's no Anton in this movie and maybe it could've been a little more surburban a la Friday, but this has NCFOM all over it. If you dont think is the black comedy version of NCFOM, you havent seen enough black comedies  ;D

Mike Epps has cracked me up every time I've seen him, whether its a movie or stand up. I have full faith this will be funny.

And Wood Harris might as well change his name to Avon Barksdale, because, that's just who he is. Idris Elba's career seems to be on more of an upswing, but he should just change his name to Stringer Bell as well

Best movie news I've heard in a while: http://theplaylist.blogspot.com/2009/04/john-hillcoats-road-gets-october-16th.html

Easily my most anticipated film this year.

Omar's in it (to keep on topic with this talk of The Wire).

Had not, looks good. Reminds me of a less British (no offense DB  ;)) Guy Ritchie flick.

Big fan of Brody, Ruffalo, and Wiesz as well so I expect good things

.....which reminds me, I still need to see RockNRolla  :o

Sounds awesome, big Viggo fan too. Really liked Eastern Promises.

Maybe they were right for pulling it, but I didnt think last year was all that strong of a year Best Picture wise. I guess they thought Slumdog might have caught too much steam?  :-?

No preview yet though?  :(

There's a bunch of stills floating around online, looks like they capture the tone of the novel perfectly.

Looking forward to that too!

Official website says the trailer is coming soon & there's a little box ready to go: http://www.weinsteinco.com/#/film/road/
