i really liked it. esp. the music.

TEO

"Thank you for smoking". Thought provoking as well as funny at the same time. I would suggest it!
"You are only as young as the last time you changed your mind" T. Leary

TEO

"Two for the Money". Better than I thought and Pacino is STILL on fire!

I'm looking forward to this one.

I just saw Coachella.  And now I'm wondering why I still haven't seen the Flaming Lips OR the Arcade Fire OR Radiohead live.  Shit, I've got some catching up to do.

Chills

"Volver" by Pedro Almodovar. Slightly underwhelming.
Although Penelope Cruz kept things attractive visually.

Gunner Palace - unfortuntely not as insightful as I had hoped yet still interesting, especially in light of the recent alleged killings of an Iraqi civilians.

Match Point and Shopgirl. Steve Martin's film was better than Woody's if comparing the two films from my recent double-bill.

House Of Sand & Fog - I can't remember the last time a movie filled me with this many emotions or made me cry so hard for so long. Has anyone else seen this? Shit...

I can't get up the energy to watch this one.  It looks so depressing.

I watched The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada last night.  I definitely recommend it.  Tommy Lee Jones, Dwight Yoakam, & Levon Helm (!) A really good modern western, but especially worth watching  because of the current political debates about border control in the U.S. and the backlash against Latin Americans.

(tangent follows) Anybody else disgusted that Bush, the man who so earnestly courted the Latino vote and spoke Spanish at his campaign stops now wants to make English our national language and ensure that the Star-Spangled Banner be sung only in English?

I can fully understand that Tundra but strangely enough I didn't find the movie depressing. It was incredibly sad but at the same time beautiful & even somehow uplifting. The movie shows us that not everything is always as it seems & reminds us of the importance of family & loved ones. It's also beautifully shot, I was very surprised to find that this was the directors debut.
I like to be moved by films & this one moved me deeply.

Three Burials came last week, can't wait to watch it  :)

Just watched Seven Samurai.  It is now one of my top 5 favorite movies of all time.  I've been putting off seeing this movie for awhile.  While I enjoy film,  some films that are considered important classics just don't grab me.  I should have known that I would not have that problem with a Akira Kurosawa film.  I've seen 2 other of his films and have enjoued them well enough.
But, if you have not seen this movie, I suggest rushing out to find it right away. At 3:27 minutes long, you'd think that the movie would drag on a bit. Not so here. Great pase throughout, as well as fantastic acting.  I wanted to watch the whole thing over when it ended.
Seven Samurai saved my life....lol ok maybe not, but it did blow my mind, and when a film can do that, all is well with the world. ;)

I concur.  It is one of the most wonderful movies.  My favourite by Kurosawa is Red Beard.  If you haven't seen it yet, I suggest it. :)

PapaJoeBear

Thanks for the suggestion, EC! I'll put it on the top of my list on netflix.  I'm getting Kerosawa's Rashimon (sp?) next.

You may find Kurosawa's Rashoman a difficult viewing experience - it's pretty surreal and flirts with being avant-garde. Three points of view are presented with some pretty interesting conclusions.

More accessible Kurosawa flicks are The Hidden Fortress (highly influential to George Lucas), Throne Of Blood, Ran, Kagemusha and Yojimbo (which was remade by Sergio Leone).

EC

Is it Hidden Fortress or Throne of Blood that is based on Macbeth?  I can't remember which one I've seen, and I don't think I've seen both...

(Red Beard is pretty accessible.)

My favorite Kurosawa film is Ran. I know it was based on Shakespeare's King Lear. Truly it's one of his best .A beautiful epic film.

I saw the movie "The Proposition" with the screenplay by Nick Drake. Very good western set in 19th century Australia. Great cast with Guy Pearce,John Hurt,Ray Winstone and Emily Watson. Very gritty, violent and realistic look at life in the Outback. Well worth checking out.
