QuoteHey you movie nuts--I just joined Netflix and my 1st movie just came in, "A Scanner Darkly".

I've seen bunches of movies and have a pretty good queue all set up but am very open to suggestions--any recent must sees anybody would like to enter???
It's always hard recommending movies to other people, especially when you don't know their tastes but Sexy Beast is the best film I've seen in a while.
Seemingly random but keeping with Ben Kingsley I'd also recommend House Of Sand & Fog if you haven't seen it.
Keeping with Ray Winstone, The Proposition, which I also saw recently is a great movie.

I know you're a fan of Christopher Guest & his movies.
Throw some of your favs at us so we have a ball park?

How was A Scanner Darkly? I find Richard Linklater to be very hit or miss & he hasn't come anywhere near close to touching let alone bettering Dazed & Confused IMO.

I'm so jealous of Netflix & the like. We have nothing like this in Japan & the DVD stores are poorly stocked leaving me with no other choice than to buy the movies I want to see.
God will forgive them. He'll forgive them and allow them into Heaven.....I can't live with that.

Hey MMJ Fanatic, I signed up as well. Sick of paying 4 dollars for the payper view. Be my netflix friend and anyone else:

First flim - The Proposition. Psyched to see this one.  :)

I just rented "The Departed" last nite.  Good mobster movie, the language is pretty harsh, not for the sqeemish. Kinda racist & sexist.  Jack Nicholson plays a great asshole. I would give it 4 stars. If they said the  " C " word a few more times I would of gave 3  stars. Its such a lightning rod of a word, makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck.

QuoteHouse of a Thousand Corpses--great stuff, now I wanna see The Devil's Rejects (maybe I'll just add both to my library).  Rob Zombie has become quite a director.

I saw devils rejects. Wild movie. I absolutely love the soundtrack. One of my all-time fav's. The Terry Reid songs are fantastic. Rob Zombie did a great job selecting the songs.

The Science Of Sleep. Loved it. Love is hard enough when you're not insane. What do you guys make of the end? Did his dream represent that they will live happily ever after?
That's motherfuckin' John Oates!

Ghosts_on_TV

Marie Antoinette. It's was ok, I guess. Good use of "All Cats are Grey" by the Cure in the closing credits.

Capote - fantastic film with great acting and directing. It was filmed in rural Manitoba and it really helped with the look of the movie.

The Departed - another great film. Jack is crazy and Damon and Leo did amazing jobs with their roles. So did Wahlberg.

Saw Pan's Labyrinth finally. Very good. I don't get how reviews were saying it was like a horror movie, or had elements of horror or something. The subtitles didn't really bother me, was able to follow the movie just fine. I do hope the dvd will have a english speaking version.
Still waiting to see Hannibal. I was going to go earlier in the week but thats when we got mad snow. I figured Pan's Labyrinth would not be showing there too much longer so I wanted to see it while I could.

Dubbed movies are unwatchable unless they are animated. No only are the voice-overs done by different actors (generally), all the sound is 'produced' off-set and created artificially. I'm glad you watched and liked the film as it was originally intended.

I know but I want to pay more fuller attention to what is going on visually without having to read. Just once I want to see it that way.

just start watching more foreign films. ive seen thousands, many outstanding directors. once you watch a few youll get the hang of subtitles.

i likes what i see, though you got alot of stuff im not crazy bout:
try Oleanna by David Mamet
some other directors to consider:
John Cassavetes
Sam Pekinpah
Harmony Korine
David Gordon Green
Terrence Malick
Alan Clarke
Paul Thomas Anderson
Werner Herzog
Jim Jarmusch
Robert Altman
Gus Van Sant
Wes Anderson

and i got alot more foreign director rec's if youre into that.

it's hard to go wrong with any of those, keep me updated on how it goes.

Holy fucking shit....my wife and I just watched Jesus Camp. It is a documentary about ultra (and I f'n mean ultra) religous people and their camp they have for kids. I am truly scared to death of what I just saw. They are breeding a bunch of holy roller, close minded kids. "W" is a prohet in their eyes. Words cannot truly describe how angry this is making me. Fuck I need a drink now and to go do some sin......we both just sat there and shaking or heads.

You can get it through the fine folks at netflix

harristrensky

The New World again.

Malick is my favorite director and this remains the most beautiful film ive seen.

good to see you're back, harristrensky. you know your shit.

saw the departed today. it's good but not great. infernal affairs was great.

The other day "The Devil and Daniel Johnston" arrived from my Netflix queue.  That guy rules!  He's sooo fucking crazy and writes such great lyrics.  It almost makes me want to go fly down to SXSW next month to check him out.  If you haven't seen it I highly recommend it.
My jacket's gonna be cut slim and checked

How was A Scanner Darkly? I find Richard Linklater to be very hit or miss & he hasn't come anywhere near close to touching let alone bettering Dazed & Confused IMO.

The story was interesting but I found the presentation irritating--Waking Life has already done this format and A Scanner Darkly does nothing new with it.  I think if this had been a live action film with the actors themselves, as opposed to their drawings, I would have been much more interested.

You really need to give Before Sunrise & Before Sunset a chance (if you haven't already).  Without question my favourite "romance" movie(s).

Tape is another essential Linklater film.  Ethan Hawke is beyond brilliant.  Slacker is brilliant too, if only for it's meandering and wonderful narrative.

well said red, i love those films as well. and dragonboy i think dazed and confused isnt a typical linklater films so im not sure if youll find anything else by him that is good in that way. weve seen with school of rock and bad news bears that his mainstream is lousy now. i didnt like a scanner darkly at all because i just couldnt relate to any of it. his talky films are the ones i love, suburbia being my favorite, base on the play by eric bogosian.
